I’m not embarrassed to admit that I consume all kinds of rom-coms: the good, the not-so-good, the somewhere-in-between. (I draw the line at anything that stars Ashton Kutcher. Hollywood: Please put Pedro Pascal on your rom-com leading-man shortlists. Many thanks in advance.) Anyway, I’ve sensed a shift of late. A change in the vibe. A subtle, faintly nostalgic perfume in the air: It’s not overpowering, like the glossy rom-com-a-minute marketplace of the 1990s and early aughts, but still bright and warm and mood-boosting. The box office success of Anyone but You ($218 million globally) and streaming hit Irish Wish (currently top 5 in Nielsen’s movie chart), the fresh deals being made, the rom-coms rolling out this year with big names attached — all this activity reflects audience enthusiasm for polished, character-driven entertainment with jokes, heart and wish fulfillment.

Madame Web star Sydney Sweeney is a hugely in-demand actress right now, but one top producer doesn’t understand the hype. Carol Baum, who served as executive producer on films such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Father of the Bride, slammed the White Lotus actress during a discussion after a screening of her 1988 film Dead Ringers. According to the Daily Mail, Baum said she “didn’t get” Sweeney, who rose to fame playing Cassie Howard on HBO’s hit teen drama Euphoria and has gone on to star in films such as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Voyeurs, Reality, Anyone But You, and Immaculate. “I was watching on the plane Sydney Sweeney’s movie because I wanted to watch it,” Baum continued, referring to Will Gluck’s 2024 romantic comedy Anyone But You. “I wanted to know who she is and why everybody’s talking about her.” She added,...

Although people expected happy box office news following the release of two fresh titles – Dev Patel’s Monkey Man and Disney’s The First Omen, it unfortunately wasn’t the case. Making a surprisingly weak entry, which brought the weekend total to a lower-than-expected scenario, the two movies failed to snatch Sydney Sweeney’s position as box office Queen.

Celebrating big news as Immaculate, achieved a remarkable milestone, despite low expectations, Sydney Sweeney appears to continue her trend of delivering silent hits, like her previous film, Anyone But You. Saving the box office single-handedly, Sweeney appears to be on her way to topple Dev Patel’s film, as it failed to revive the box-office despite optimistic predictions.

Sydney Sweeney is one of the rising stars in Hollywood. Although she began acting at an early age with guest roles in TV shows like Pretty Little Liars and Grey’s Anatomy, she did not gain recognition until she starred in the 2018 comedy-drama TV series Everything Sucks! Fast forward to 2019, she had the world’s attention with her breakout role as Cassie Howard in the HBO series Euphoria.
Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard in Euphoria
Needless to say, Euphoria, the fourth most-watched show in the history of HBO, exposed the artists to greater opportunities in the industry. Sweeney is one of the breakout talents from this show. While she has starred in some great projects over the years, she decided to take the steering into her own hands for her most recent project, Immaculate. In a recent interview, she revealed the real reason why she chose to work as a producer on the movie.

Sydney Sweeney is the upcoming rising star of Hollywood. Despite being in a critically panned film like Sony’s Madame Webb, the actress’ popularity seems to have hardly diminished for fans and is still as crazy about the Euphoria star. One might think that her romantic comedy with Glen Powell has been successful thanks to her as the lead actress.

Sony’s Will Gluck-directed Anyone But You crossed $200M globally over this past weekend, injecting fresh life into the romcom genre and proving yet again that when done right, these films can travel theatrically and bring audiences together for a communal experience.
Savvy marketing, viral moments and two hot young stars in Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney — each with significant social engagement — were a key factor to the $25M film’s success. Some of the numbers are staggering: There have been 2.8 billion views of the hashtag #AnyoneButYou on TikTok. And, it was unexpected icing that a 20-year-old song, Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten,” became an anthem for fans.
Since it began a staggered overseas rollout in December with the UK and Australia the only majors in play until mid-January, Anyone But You kept seeing incredible holds, some weeks down infinitesimally and some weeks up by a good margin.

Romantic comedies are alive and well, it seems, and we have a couple of emerging, A-list movie stars to thank for it. "Anyone But You" has officially crossed the $200 million mark at the box office in one of the most unlikely turnarounds for a movie in years, financially speaking. But the star power of Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick") and Sydney Sweeney ("Euphoria") got the attention of the moviegoing masses and they turned this lower-mid-budget rom-com into the biggest hit the genre has seen in nearly a decade.
The Sony Pictures release has amassed $87 million domestically to go with a stellar $113 million internationally, per Variety. That puts it past the total of other recent hits in the genre, including "Ticket to Paradise" ($168 million), which starred both Julia Roberts and George Clooney, as well as "The Lost City" ($192 million), which was led by Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. Anyone But You is getting a lot of attention from fans and especially industry specialists who are now just finding out that rom-coms can still make money at the box office. While the raunchy romantic comedy by the director Will Gluck (Friends with Benefits) isn’t exactly a masterpiece or an instant classic, it gives the viewers some much-deserved escape and a fun story, that they don’t have to wear 3D glasses for.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell starred in 2023’s romantic-comedy movie Anyone But You directed by Will Gluck from a screenplay co-written by Ilana Wolpert. Anyone But You was one of the most talked about movies in 2023 especially because of the chemistry the lead pair shared.
Upon its release, the movie which was filmed in Australia received mixed reviews from the critics and the audience. Sony Pictures released an extended version of the movie ahead of Valentine’s Day on 9th February 2024. It has recently been pointed out that the movie’s box office collection makes it the highest-grossing live-action adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play.

Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing gets a modern makeover in Anyone But You, which is now streaming online.

I'm about to propose a somewhat radical idea, but hear me out: What if enemies ... became lovers? Once upon a time, the studio system used to deliver multiple movies a year riffing on this classic rom-com premise, but recent decades have seen these exact sorts of vehicles for movie stars falling by the wayside more and more. After all, we just have to make room for more superhero movies like "Madame Web," don't we? But in a highly ironic twist, one disaster of a Sydney Sweeney-starring production has given way to another much more successful one -- and the same studio is responsible for both. Sensing a lesson here, folks? In short, long live rom-coms!
"Anyone But You" maybe didn't reinvent the wheel or anything, as laid out in Marshall Shaffer's review for /Film, but co-leads Sweeney and Glen Powell certainly managed to charm their ways into the hearts of audiences worldwide.

The fate of Sony’s Madame Web was already predetermined even before the movie’s release with fans trolling the official trailer and critics slamming it in their early reviews, but no one predicted Sydney Sweeney’s romantic comedy movie, Anyone But You, would emerge as a sleeper hit.

Sony’s Madame Web hit theaters worldwide on Valentine’s Day, and the film is getting universally panned by critics and fans alike.
Criticism is being aimed at almost every aspect of the movie, including its messy plot, sub-par dialogue, poor special effects, and miscasting of its star ensemble.
Much criticism has been directed at the casting of Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, the awkward teenage girl destined to become a Spider-Woman.
However, as these five previous roles prove, Sweeney hasn’t always been so miscast as she was in the terrible Madame Web.
Sharp Objects
Sydney Sweeney as Alice in Sharp Objects.
The miniseries Sharp Objects is an HBO psychological thriller based on Gillian Flynn’s brilliant 2006 debut novel. It chronicles the exploits of an alcoholic crime reporter, only recently discharged from a psychiatric ward after self-harming for years, who returns to her hometown to investigate the murders of two young girls.

It does not take much time in the era of social media for a photo or a moment to get attention online. It is also bound to cause a stir worldwide when it features an alluring photo of such stunning stars. Recently, the renowned filmmaker Will Gluck blew everyone away when he shared a not-safe-for-work (Nsfw) picture of Anyone But You’s leading face, Glen Powell. Did we also mention that this snap was pretty sure to become an internet sensation?
Sydney Sweeney and Powell made significant contributions to the rom-com genre towards the end of last year. Audiences were eager to see how they heated up the screen after their 103-minute flick became one of the most talked-about movies of the year. Sony’s Anyone But You, which was co-written and directed by Gluck, is billed as a contemporary—and a very loose— adaptation of William Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado About Nothing.

Peter Ramsey, Caleeb Pinkett Producing Live-Action Feature Adaptation Of Comic Book ‘The Storm Clan’
Exclusive: Academy Award winner Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and former Overbook head Caleeb Pinkett (Cobra Kai) are set to produce a live-action feature adaptation of The Storm Clan, the comic book created by Dallas Jackson and Joe Casey, which marks the first title from Jackson’s new company DJ Classicz Comix.
Jackson and Casey will pen the script, with former Lionsgate exec Jorge Alfaro to serve as an EP.
A sci-fi action adventure story, The Storm Clan watches as an ex-military weapons engineer trains his five adopted children to be undercover hi-tech/martial-arts thieves wearing an invincible bionic-body armor. Previously orphaned, the teenagers gifted with bionic technology see it provide them with the opportunity to protect themselves from the threats of the streets, also empowering them to take advantage of life instead of being taken advantage of, and most importantly, giving them comfort and sense of belonging within a family.

Do movie stars exist anymore? The consensus seems to be no. Or, at the very least, new ones aren’t being created past the generation of roughly Leonardo DiCaprio. Which is a shame, because if movie stars were still allowed to thrive in Hollywood now, Emma Stone would certainly be one of them.
After several supporting roles in films like “Superbad” and “Zombieland,” Stone practically burst onto the scene in “Easy A,” her first leading role. As the sharp-tongued but likable teen protagonist in Will Gluck’s comedy, Stone defined her star image immediately: an everywoman appeal mixed with pure charisma, a playfully snarky disposition, and a genuine talent at comedy that makes her pop off the screen. From that film and her Golden Globes nomination, the then 22-year old Stone quickly moved from the teen comedy world into broader pastures, though the projects she chose didn’t always match her potential.

We’re still in a holdover pattern for Hollywood at the global and international box office, though milestones continue to be reached on an offshore and worldwide basis for existing releases. Meanwhile, Anyone But You saw an uptick overseas and drops were good for others (including newly-minted Oscar nominees). One new local entry, India’s Fighter, flew to the top of the global weekend chart.
Among the latest Hollywood titles to hit a new benchmark, Miramax’s The Beekeeper buzzed past the $100M mark worldwide, Illumination/Universal’s Migration flew across $200M and Warner Bros/DC’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom topped $400M (see more detail below).
In significant new local play, Viacom 18/Marflix’s Hindi aviation actioner Fighter, from Pathaan director Siddharth Anand and starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, is looking at a $25.1M start globally (including $4.3M from North America), per comScore. As ever, concrete...

Things aren't looking great at the box office right now, as there are very few big releases in theaters that are getting moviegoers out in meaningful numbers. But there is something good to focus on today as Sony's rom-com "Anyone But You" has continued to quietly defy expectations for over a full month now. The film crossed the $100 million milestone over the weekend and is arguably one of the most unlikely movies to ever hit that mark based on how things started.
"Anyone But You" added another $5.4 million to its ever-growing total over the weekend, per The Numbers. That was good enough for a fourth place finish in its fifth frame, which is impressive. More importantly, director Will Gluck's romantic comedy has now earned $64.2 million domestically to go with $35.9 million internationally for a grand total of $100.1 million worldwide. Given its $25 million budget, this is going to be a huge win for Sony Pictures.

So, here we are in mid-January, and though we’re staring down the barrel of a tough year ahead, it’s not all wintry doom and gloom on an international box office (and combined global) level.
While we’re not in blockbuster holdover territory, we should celebrate the wins when they come. To wit, there was a new milestone reached this weekend for Sony’s Anyone But You, which, with $100.2M, has become the highest-grossing R-rated romcom worldwide since Bridget Jones’s Baby in 2016.
Let’s also cheer that Paramount’s Mean Girls clicked with UK audiences in its launch and opened at No. 1 there. Also, Searchlight’s lauded Poor Things was tops in France, Freddie Mercury went supersonic in the IMAX edition of Queen Rock Montreal, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is nearing a milestone that might not have seemed possible from the outset.
See below for more on those titles,...

A winter freeze has set in at the domestic box office as theater owners and studios grapple with a slowdown in product due to last year’s labor strikes and resulting production delays.
For the Jan. 19-21 weekend, Paramount’s Mean Girls musical stayed in first place in its second outing with an estimated $11.7 million from 3,826 locations for a domestic total of $50 million. The Tina Fey-penned musical fell more than the filmmakers would have liked, dropping 59 percent.
The only new wide release was Bleecker Street’s I.S.S., a thriller about warring astronauts in their rival space stations. Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the film stars Ariana DeBose and Chris Messina.
I.S.S., playing in 2,250 locations, all but crashed to earth with a $3 million domestic debut to come in at No. 7. The pic could have a second life on home entertainment, as well as do solid business in some overseas markets.

TikTok may have just saved romantic comedies from being banished forever from the big screen to the hinterlands of streaming.
Sony’s Anyone But You, based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, has become a box office darling and could reach $85 million to $100 million domestically against a $25 million budget, despite mediocre reviews and an equally meh B+ CinemaScore. It has impressed Hollywood to the point where normally adversarial studio heads are gushing over the film’s astounding run as if it were their own.

Exclusive: Writer Lindsay Grossman and TV development executive Madison Jones have launched a new list of the best unproduced romance TV pilots and screenplays, calling it The Love List. They expect to make it an annual event.
The two are running the list the same way The Black List started, using the recommendations of studio and production company execs. If you’ve read a great romance-centered pilot or screenplay and you’re a studio or production company exec, you can email your submissions for consideration via lovelistsubmissions@gmail.com before January 31 at midnight Pt.
Grossman and Jones met in 2020 and bonded over their mutual love for romance stories both in book form and on the screen. They were eager to see more romance make its way to film and television.
“Romance keeps the lights on in publishing, but the genre remains undervalued in the entertainment industry,” Grossman told Deadline in an exclusive statement.

Photograph by Courtesy of Sony Pictures The new romantic comedy Anyone but You has pulled off a feat that’s pretty amazing in this era: In each of its first three weekends of theatrical release, it has increased its box office totals without adding new theaters, indicating that word of mouth has been strong for the film. That’s great news for the movie’s director, Will Gluck, said its large ensemble cast (led by Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell), it wasn’t an easy movie to make. The first couple of weekends of 2024 have been relatively quiet so far as the box office is concerned. Blumhouse's horror flick "Night Swim" is the only major new release to contend with thus far and the haunted swimming pool flick had a somewhat muted debut. But something pretty amazing is quietly unfolding right now, and it all has to do with Sony's rom-com "Anyone But You." Released at the tail end of last year, the film has quietly become the mind-blowing box office story of the moment, raking as the first true surprise of the year. So, what's going on exactly? Let's break it down.
The R-rated comedy, which stars Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick") and Sydney Sweeney ("Euphoria"), opened to just $6 million over the weekend of December 22 against a $25 million budget. Facing a wave of competition from the likes of "Wonka" and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," it...

The wait for Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell‘s raunchy romantic comedy Anyone But You is finally over and the fans of the genre and the stars seem to be loving the film.
