Because the Casting Society of America shifted the date of its Artios Awards, this year’s nominees include films released theatrically from July 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, paving the way for last year’s Best Picture winner to nuzzle its way into contention along with 2014 hopefuls like "Birdman," "Boyhood," and "Selma." With categories ranging from Big Budget Drama to Low Budget Comedy, nearly every film that one expects to make the cut made the cut. And then some. The Csa’s nominees put "Guardians of the Galaxy" side by side with "Wolf of Wall Street," "Whiplash" with "Inside Llewyn Davis," and Disney’s "Planes" with "Frozen." If you were dreaming of a re-evaluation of "We’re the Millers," your time is now. 2015’s bicoastal Artios Awards will be hosted by Patton Oswalt (Los Angeles) and Michael Urie (New York City). The evening will also honor two-time Academy Award®-nominee Richard Linklater ("Boyhood...

The Casting Society of America has super-sized its Artios Awards feature film nominations this year, honoring 42 different films and putting some of 2014’s top contenders in categories where they’ll compete against 2013’s awards movies.
For its 30th annual ceremony, the awards for casting directors have moved from their usual fall slot to a late-January date that placed them in the middle of awards season. To accommodate the new date, this year’s eligibility period spanned 18 months instead of a single year, encompassing films released in the second half of 2013 and all of 2014.

Winners for film, television, theater and new media categories will be announced January 22 at simultaneous award ceremonies at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and 42West Cabaret & Lounge in New York City. Csa also will honor Richard Linklater (Boyhood) with the Career Achievement Award, Rob Marshall (Into The Woods) with the New York Apple Award and casting director Ellen Lewis with the Hoyt Bowers Award. Here's What Guys Really Mean When They Say They're Like 'True Detective' Anti-Hero Rust Cohle Finally, someone just like you, bro. By Jeremy Gordon I won’t try and say the following is anything more than anecdotal, gleaned from a very small survey of me and mine. Nevertheless, it’s more than enough to raise the alarm: Multiple reports of young men comparing themselves to Rust Cohle, eponymous hero of HBO’s True Detective. Maybe it’s happened to you: While surfing your Facebook feed, you come across a status saying something along the likes of “I identify so much with Rust Cohle” or “if I had to pick a TV character I’m most like, it’s Rust from True Detective.” Maybe this hasn’t happened to you at all and it’s unfathomable to imagine how it ever could, in which case: lucky. For those [...]...

Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt joining the Justice League? That's the word according to one rumor, though Jgl's reps have denied the report. Still, we can't help but wonder at the possibility of Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment's "Justice League" adaptation casting the "Dark Knight Rises" actor as Batman.
Specifically, we keep coming back to one question: is this a good idea, or a bad idea?
To get to the bottom of whether or not Jgl and "Justice League" are a good fit, we asked our friends from around the web for their take.
Read on for nine different opinions on the Gordon-Levitt "Justice League" rumors!
Jeremy Gordon, This Mutant Life columnist: "Sure. Why not? Jgl is tall, dark and handsome, and has the acting chops of few others in his generation. It's all conditional, though, on whether the team for 'Justice League' and the Bat-franchise going forth will...

The Back Issue Bin is, err, back! We'll be here every Friday running down the ten greatest bits of comic book movie and television news to hit the space over the past week.
This week was a Marvel-heavy affair, with "Avengers" and "Spider-Man" scoring the big wins. People are psyched about the announcement of a "Captain America" sequel as well, now set in the modern day. In DC Comics news, rumors abound about new "Arkham City" Dlc content. And in flesh-eating territory, there's a new "Walking Dead" petition worth sinking your teeth into.
Get all that and more as we count down the top ten stories on Splash Page this week.
10. We launched a new column, No Capes Allowed, about non-superhero comics that deserve the big (or small) screen treatment. Kicking off is this piece on Brian K. Vaughan's "Saga," which Kevin P. Sullivan argues should be on TV producers' radar.

As we pointed out yesterday, it’s been a big year for Tom Hiddleston. With villainous star turns in “Thor" and “The Avengers" and dramatic roles in artsy films like “War Horse" and “Midnight in Paris," he’s the real breakout star among the cast of “Avengers" characters.
Before he can move on to bigger things, he’s got to settle the role of Loki, who’s supposed to be the villain in this summer’s “Avengers" film. Regardless of how the trickster god fares against Earth’s Mightest Heroes, Hiddleston is still signed on for the “Thor" sequel, which is set to begin filming later this year.
In an interview with Empire, Hiddleston teased that even in "Thor 2," Loki will be up to the same tricks as usual.

What’s a superhero movie without an ensemble? The Zack Snyder Superman reboot "Man of Steel" is looking to the comic books for its extended cast, rather than inventing one out of thin air. That means no Lois Lane’s husband, no Nuclear Man, and not even Richard Pryor.
In the newest addition, Variety reports that Richard Schiff ("The West Wing") is joining the film as "Doctor Hamilton," presumably Emil Hamilton of funny book fame.
In his earlier appearances, Hamilton was portrayed as a helpful scientist of S.T.A.R. Labs, a top-secret government lab that Superman would alternately tangle with and look to for help. In recent years, Hamilton was outed as the supervillain Ruin, using a fancy tech suit to attack the Man of Steel’s loved ones. Of all the big names in "The Avengers," Tom Hiddleston is by far the least recognizable actor. Chris Hemsworth aside, every superhero and supporting character has a long, well-established career in film. How was Hiddleston, a relative newcomer, to make himself known?
You’ll have to read this extensive profile in The Independent to find out, but the "surreal" quality of his new found surroundings wasn’t lost on the English actor, who is now finding himself very much in the public eye.
"There was one day when, as Loki, I was sat on some steps, staring at the Avengers in front of me. It would be quite odd just to look at a grouping that involves [such actors as] Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Chris Hemsworth," he said. "But the fact that they were dressed in the most outlandish hero costumes was bizarre!

Who says live capture animation is for dorks? Not the Visual Effects Society, that’s for sure.
The Ves announced nominations for its 10th annual awards ceremony honoring visual effects, with "The Adventures of Tintin" leading the way at six nominations over four categories dedicated to animation. They even snagged three of the five nominations in the Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Motion Picture category, surely a gut punch to the other animated films that came out this year. But what hope could they have against a cartoon dog?
Also receiving multiple nominations were "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," with five each. "Rango" and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" each got four, with "Puss in Boots" and "Hugo" at three each. They’ll all look to strike gold at the February 7 ceremony, which takes place at...

Unreal as it may be to read, the Spike Lee-helmed "Oldboy" remake is definitely moving forward. Starring Josh Brolin as the titular old boy, the movie was supposed to start shooting in March -- now, it’ll be tackled sometime later in 2012.
With Brolin’s press commitments for "Men in Black 3" keeping him busy through the summer, Variety reports, they’ll need a little more time to finalize the cast and get everything lined up. As the original came out almost a decade ago, the studio doesn’t have to worry about timeliness, so why not give the project the care it deserves?
More interesting, though, is speculation over the biggest hang-up: the lack of a villain. Colin Firth and Clive Owen were reportedly offered the role as the megalomaniac millionaire who sets up and breaks down Oldboy’s life (I know that’s not his name,...

It's a brand new Friday, which means it’s time for brand new pictures from the set of "The Avengers."
First off, there’s this shot of Thor and Captain America looking quite heroic as they survey a busted NYC street, courtesy of USA Today. You’ve probably seen this scene countless times in trailers, but they look pretty cool here so we’ll allow it. We wonder how much of the movie will feature a maskless Captain America -- the helmet makes for hood cranial protection, yes, but it takes us away from Chris Evans’ dreamy mug. Oh, it’s so dreamy.
There’s also some new concept art from the film involving the Quinjet, the Avengers’ famous plane that they ride around in. Photoshopped flame trails aside, the Quinjet looks as modern and sleek as you’d imagine it to be. It gets destroyed a lot in the comic books,...

The "Akira" remake is on hold, and we understand. It’s hard to do a live-action Americanized version of an animated Japanese film that was done perfectly the first time around, no matter how much Keanu was rumored to be involved at one point.
But according to Deadline, the whole thing isn’t dead. Warner Bros. is still technically reassessing the budget, although it doesn’t look pretty; it was already cut from $150 million to $90 million, and really, an "Akira" movie deserves to look good.
More notably, Deadline reports that Warner had a test option deal with Dane DeHaan and Michael Pitt, both competing for the role of Tetsuo.
Pitt or DeHaan, whoever had been selected, would have been starring alongside Garrett Hedlund’s Kaneda. Kristen Stewart, Ken Watanabe, and Helena Bonham Carter were also potentially attached, but apparently that wasn’t enough. Pitt would be a...

With all its iron men, black widows and American captains, did you think "The Avengers" was a superhero movie? Oh, how wrong you thought. It’s a metaphor, silly, one that transcends blown-up buildings and CGI wizardry -- that’s according to Mark Ruffalo, at least.
"You have all these disparate egos, superheroes in this and that, and they refuse to give up some of their positions in order to make a more perfect union and to join the team," he told the Wall Street Journal. "That’s really what the whole movie is about: subjugating your own best interest momentarily to further that of the whole."
Ruffalo plays the Hulk, so it’s unsure what he’ll have to give up. Pants? Dignity? But we jest, because it’s noble that he’d want the movie to mean more than the usual slap-bang action fests.

Are you starving for clips from "The Avengers”? It’s hard not to be, but try to hold onto yourself -- the movie comes out in less than half a year, and won’t the wait just be so satisfying?
But if you need a few more glimpses, check out this recently-posted Russian trailer for the film. You won’t be able to understand a darn thing (unless you're fluent in Russian, of course), but the images come across just fine. Besides, "Hulk Smash" is multilingual!

We also see Loki coming to in a Shield laboratory, looking quite sweaty/surprised, as well as a conversation he has with Tony Stark. Stan Lee turned 89 years young today, if you can believe it. The Marvel Comics impresario has been around for almost forever, through World War II and Vietnam and Iraq, from Captain America to the X-Men and beyond.
At an age when most are comfortably retired, Lee continues to stick around in the public eye. Just last year, he hosted a History Channel documentary series, “Stan Lee’s Superheroes.” He continues to show up in every Marvel movie, even though the rights are spread across a handful of studios. Exclusive intellectual property rights don’t hold a candle to being Stan the Man, the guy who started it all.
Co-creators like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko were deeply involved in the character creation process of early Marvel Comics, of course, but it's safe to say that without Stan Lee's huckster spirit, Marvel would not have built its...

New "Dark Knight Rises" photos? Don't mind if we do!
We’ve already seen some of these images from "The Dark Knight Rises," but not this nicely. Magazine scans and blog leaks don’t account for the fine detailing on Bane’s back, nor the wide angle view on a motorcycle-riding Catwoman.
There’s one photo of Bane, looking a little grimmer (and infinitely more jacked) than the other images we've seen, clutching his arms and looking downward, like he’s about to bomb a football field or file a really firm complaint with the Dmv. (One of those two.)
In another shot, the light’s fully illuminating his leather vest/harness combination, arms jutted out as he stares at the camera with some careless look. You wouldn’t want to run into him in a dark alley or a sex dungeon, no.

It ain’t easy being a teenage superhero, or a teenager at all, even if your hair is perfectly coiffed, your arms perfectly ripped.
Looking at these new photos from the set of "The Amazing Spider-Man,” that much is for sure. We hadn’t noticed Andrew Garfield’s probably-not-intentional resemblance to "Twilight” star Robert Pattinson before, but it’s all there -- the gelled hair, the faraway eyes, the defined-but-not-ridiculous physique. Nerd glasses don’t do much to dispel the image; after all, those are also pretty cool these days.
More believable as an average high school student (well, to an extent) is Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, reverted back to her original blonde hair color, hugging her textbooks to her chest like she’s late for chemistry class. At just 23 years old, Stone can still pass as a second semester senior, whereas Garfield, age 28, seems a little too together.

Are you excited for "The Dark Knight Rises"? Of course you are. So are we, mainly because we barely know anything about the movie outside of the basic details: there's a Batman, there's a Bane, and there's an eight-year gap since the events of the previous film. When watching our Year in Review recap of reporting on "Rises," note how many times we tried to wrench plot details out of the film's reluctant cast.
There's Gary Oldman, pausing and laughing after being asked whether "Tdkr" provides a definitive end to the series. There's Joseph Gordon-Levitt, also pausing and laughing when asked whether he's Robin — before disavowing the entire conversation. We tried to trick Marion Cotillard into revealing whether her character already exists in the comic books, but she was too clever for that. Do you know what she did? She paused and laughed.

Do you live in New York City? Do you like comic books? Do you like fun? If so, get yourself to the Paley Center for Media’s presentation of "Justice League: Doom,” the newest Bruce Timm production in the animated DC Universe.
In partnership with our friends at MTV Geek, the Paley Center will be screening the film on February 13th, with an as-yet unannounced panel to follow.
"Doom,” if you forgot, is somewhat inspired by Mark Waid’s classic "Tower of Babel” story from those turn-of-the-century Jla comics. The Justice League, led by Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Martian Manhunter and Cyborg, are forced to adapt when a group of bad guys come across the Dark Knight’s plans for taking down wayward superheroes. Though some diehard fans love to quibble over the merits of the original comic given Batman's slightly wonky plans...

The life of a superhero is relatively simple. Sure, you have to fight bad guys, take care of your loved ones, and maintain a complicated secret identity. But you’re privy to so many cool tricks and toys that all of that is a small price to pay. We can’t all be Captain America or Iron Man or Batman, but if their gadgets were real, here’s what I’d want for Christmas -- for myself and for everyone else in my family.
Mjolnir
Perfect for the handyman in the family, Mjolnir is great for construction tasks from nail pounding to demolition. It can also call down the rain, which is great for getting out of unwanted picnics or sporting events.

Even though he won "Dancing with the Stars" with some very impressive moves, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward is not really an actor. Thankfully, his role in "The Dark Knight Rises" required him to do what he does best: take the football and run with it.
In the newly released "Dark Knight" trailer, Ward is seen sprinting for a touchdown while the football field, triggered by a Bane bomb, collapses behind him. A lot of movies would've hired some generic tough guy to play the football player, but Christopher Nolan is no slouch — he asked Ward and several other pro football players to be a part of the scene, if only for authenticity’s sake.
"It blew me away," Ward told the Los Angeles Times about his reaction to the trailer. "I mean to be a part of something that will last forever was amazing. I...

The live-action “Blade” franchise is probably dead in the water, sadly. Even before Wesley Snipes went to prison on counts of tax evasion, no one was clamoring for a fourth film, not after the way “Blade: Trinity” was such a mess (also, wow, that movie came out in 2004).
Fortunately, fans who can’t get enough of the vampire hunter will find some respite in the anime adaptation, officially announced yesterday by Marvel. “Blade” will be aired on G4, with the premiere episode coming on Friday, January 13th, followed by at least three more months of episodes.
Blade himself will be voiced by Harold Perrineau of “Lost” and “Matrix” fame, with the direction and writing headed by veterans of the anime industry. From Marvel’s official description, it’ll be a pretty clearly familiar story, but with a more global take than the Snipes films:

We’d write that David Fincher is having a big year, but it seems like he’s been in permanent kill mode for a while. “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" comes out tomorrow, and it’s sure to sweep box offices if not critical year-end lists. He’s also got plenty of projects in the distant future, including a Disney adaptation of “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and “House of Cards," the first original television show for Netflix.
But there’s another project that comic fans would like to see him tackle as soon as possible: Eric Powell’s “The Goon," that irascible thug with the lead pipe. When talking to MTV News, Fincher revealed that the animated film is still in development, although it might be a while.
“We're still trying. Eric rewrote his script," he said. “He got away from the genesis story, and I...

This “Avengers" movie is really happening, you guys. There’s no maybes or ifs to consider, no developmental hell or botched contracts to sort out amongst studio executives. After more than three years in the making, next summer’s film approaches with the speed and subtlety of a breakaway train.
If you need to be reminded, look to these newly released photo stills showcasing the action and reminding us of what we’re in for. There’s Thor and Captain America, looking ready to fight; there’s Iron Man, once again zooming through a city skyline. Excited yet?
If you need more hype, watch the German trailer or one of our interviews with the movie’s stars. It’ll be really interesting to see which summer superhero blockbuster will top box offices -- “Avengers" or “Dark Knight Rises." They’re coming out within a few months of each other,...

A few years ago, there was a lot of hubbub surrounding “X-Men Origins: Wolverine." (No, it wasn’t the way they messed up Deadpool.) About a month prior to the film’s release, an unfinished copy was uploaded to the Internet for crazed fans to download and peruse. Lacking CGI or careful editing, the version was still more or less intact, and fans were able to criticize to their heart’s content. (Again, mostly about Deadpool.)
Though the original source of the leak was never found, the U.S. attorney’s office nabbed one scapegoat for the affair: Gilberto Sanchez, who admitted to putting the workprint on Megaupload.com and spreading the link around the Internet. Yesterday, Sanchez was sentenced to a year in federal prison on one count of uploading copyrighted work being prepared for commercial distribution.

Depending on how you feel about remakes on top of remakes, “The Amazing Spider-Man," while looking promising, might be wholly unnecessary. Those Sam Raimi “Spider-Man" films were pretty good, weren’t they? But in less than a year, they’ll be left to the annals of history, or perhaps Netflix. “Amazing" sequels will follow, and the only memory we’ll have of Tobey Maguire’s goofy grin will be in our cumbersome DVD collections.
Today, you can relive the good times by watching the first film’s screen test for the Green Goblin, in which an unnamed actor wears a very different mask, along with the traditional purple cap. His ears are long, his eyes are yellow, his teeth are quite real -- he resembles the Goblin of the comic books, or at least, some kind of Orc-ish derivative.
As Raimi gives direction off-screen, the Goblin snarls...

There are a lot of "Tintin" stories to adapt, more than 20 full-length comics produced over 50 years. We're seeing a handful of them in this year's "The Adventures of Tintin" -- stories like "Secrets of the Unicorn," "Red Rackham's Treasure," and "The Crab with the Golden Claws" -- but the producers have their pick of the litter when it comes to considering a sequel.
As the first movie racks up acclaim on its way towards its Christmas release, The Playlist reports that the producers are considering switching up their plan for a trilogy.
"We knew that we needed to introduce Tintin, we needed to introduce the relationship with Haddock, we knew [the dog] Snowy was going to be in it," producer Kathleen Kennedy told them, "so now what we're thinking [for the second film] is what new characters do we want to introduce? Well, we'll probably introduce Calculus and bring him into the fold.

Christian Bale intended to raise awareness about the plight of human-rights activist Chen Guangcheng — who has been under a form of house arrest since 2010 — when he invited a CNN camera crew on a trip to China.
"The Dark Knight Rises" star was there to visit the quarantined Chen when local guards rebuffed his attempt to enter the Chinese dissident's village, forcing the entire party off the premises. Chen has been under house arrest along with his family since his release from jail in September 2010. After speaking out against China's forced abortion policy, he was imprisoned in 2006 on charges of damaging property and disrupting traffic in a protest. Chen's supporters maintained that the blind, self-taught lawyer was detained on false charges, but he served the full four years of his sentence.

Comic books weren’t always such a big deal. Back in pre-war America, comics and their characters were produced by the dozen, each hoping to capitalize on some zeitgeist or current of interest to make its company some money before moving onto the next potential concept. When Joe Simon co-created Captain America in 1940, literally no one could have seen where the comic book industry would eventually find itself -- and that 71 years later, his patriotic creation would see the silver screen en route to a larger “Avengers" film.
According to Newsarama and confirmed by Marvel Comics, Simon passed away yesterday at the age of 98, from unknown causes. Despite his age, Simon had remained a vital figure in the comics world -- this year, he released an autobiography, “My Life in Comics," and was active from the sidelines in supporting the Captain America film.

Building the buzz towards next year’s release, an official website promoting “The Amazing Spider-Man" launched today, crammed full of photos and production details. There’s a general overlay of the story (including the hint, “the first in a series of movies," as if there was any doubt), a list of the characters (did you know Spider-Man is in this one?), cast details, and more. Get some of the key details after the jump!
The movie seems to be centering around some mystery at the heart of the Parker mythos, related to Peter’s father’s relationship with Norman Osborn. I’m guessing it has something to do with his spider powers, but who knows -- they’re probably going in a way different direction in order to make everyone forget that the same movie basically came out nine years ago. I mean, they’re using Emma Stone...

There's a lot to handle! We’re not doing Bird any favors by distracting him from the really important things -- like the possibility of a sequel to “The Incredibles," Pixar's beloved superhero movie that dropped back in 2004, so very long ago.
A sequel has been in the vaguest pre-pre-production for years, but Bird insists he doesn’t have any greater idea. You’re sick of all the doubting. The poster for “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” has to be cool -- like, really, really cool. Do you play it safe? A trace of a skull against a black background? A motorcycle covered in flame underneath a spotlight? What do you do?
Today, a new poster for “Spirit of Vengeance” shows the complete visual reimagination of Ghost Rider, looking sleek and gritty as he rips over some really hot asphalt. Check it out in full after the jump!

Patty Jenkins’ exit from “Thor 2" was surprising, but Marvel Studios is moving fast ahead on finding a replacement.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the House of Ideas are looking at two potential directors: Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan, both television veterans who’ve both worked on shows like “Game of Thrones," “True Blood," “Boardwalk Empire," “Mad Men," and others.
Both Taylor and Minahan are thin on film experience, but that might not matter much. The series they’ve worked on trend towards the slow, dramatic type interspersed with brief bursts of action -- perfect for a sequel like “Thor 2," sure to pick up on the Shakespearean elements of the first film. “Game of Thrones," in particular, does an excellent job of blending high fantasy with human elements. While there’s a huge team behind the production of every episode, the show certainly hasn’t hurt under Taylor and Minahan’s direction.

A few days ago, we brought you the news that director Patty Jenkins was dropping out of "Thor 2" due to creative differences. Today, Jenkins spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about her decision to leave the project and what her future plans are.
"I have had a great time working at Marvel," she told THR. "We parted on very good terms, and I look forward to working with them again."
Jenkins also said she hoped to return to the superhero genre. “I have a long love of superhero films and I’d been saying over and over to my agents at CAA that I’d like to do one,” she said. “That’s the real revolution. The Marvel guys are so brave in terms of who they choose overall, and I don’t think they had any pause about me being a woman.”

“Iron Man 2" was entertaining, but it lacked the tightness of the first film. Mickey Rourke’s Ivan Vanko was sort of shuffled around, the Avengers elements felt a little rushed, and if you forgot, Tony Stark actually invented a new element in the middle of things. Just like that, a new element! Well, whatever, it happens when you’re rushing to capitalize on box office and critical success.
But according to Robert Downey Jr., the script for “Iron Man 3" is all killer and no filler.
"'Iron Man 3' is probably the best script I've read in five years, which is so funny," he said in an interview with Extra, via Comic Book Movie. “I mean, things have come so full circle that a genre superhero movie can actually be the most artistic bit of writing I read."

The viral marketing campaign for “The Dark Knight” was fantastic -- pixel-by-pixel revelation of the Joker’s face, a Comic-Con scavenger hunt, websites supporting Harvey Dent’s run for district attorney, and more. Taking place over a year and a half leading up to the film’s 2008 release, the "Dark Knight" viral component helped build an unstoppable head of steam, no doubt part of why the movie grossed as much money as it did.
"The Dark Knight Rises" doesn’t really need that much work -- everyone is pretty much permanently stoked, and will remain so until next summer. (That could change if we find out Bruce really went crazy when his parents died, and everything we’ve seen has been an insane asylum fever dream. Let’s hope not!) But there’s a neat little marketing campaign going on for this one too, sparked today by...

(That could change if we find out Bruce really went crazy when his parents died, and everything we’ve seen has been an insane asylum fever dream. Let’s hope not!) But there’s a neat little marketing campaign going on for this one too, sparked today by...

Bradley Cooper wasn’t an obvious pick to play the Crow. His acting resume hasn’t put him in the types of darker, goth-styled films that would suggest he’d be ready to slather his face in black paint and brooding scowls. But the same could’ve been said about a pre-"Dark Knight" Heath Ledger, so maybe the concept art we saw would’ve worked out.
As Cooper’s dropped out of the "Crow" remake, we’ll never know how it could’ve gone. Over at Empire, he talks about how things fell apart.
“There weren’t even that many ups and downs,” he says. “We were talking about doing it because of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo -- I’m such a massive fan -- and then the timing didn’t work out. He just dropped out of it also so I don’t know what they’re going to do.

There are plenty of new toys in "The Dark Knight Rises" to get excited about -- the introduction of Bane, the fast-forward timeline, Anne Hathaway in black leather. But there’s plenty of room to update the old toys as well -- namely, Hans Zimmer’s mood-setting score, among the best traits of the Bat-trilogy.
Zimmer’s been tight-lipped about details of the film; indeed, he playfully deflected our questions earlier this year. But he isn’t so reluctant to talk about the things he’s added for his score, third overall for the Nolan-verse. Upping the ante for “Rises,” Zimmer crowd-sourced thousands of fans to record their shouting for an experimental cacophony.
“I’m hellishly ambitious on that. The chant became a very complicated thing because I wanted hundreds of thousands of voices, and it’s not so easy to get hundreds of thousands of voices,...

[Update: Vulture has updated their original story with a new quote from Smulders correcting her prior comments: "And if she had a superpower it would be that she is hyperintelligent." Looks like no powers for Maria -- nothing to see here! Our original story follows.]
In the comics, ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. director Maria Hill is a born hellraiser unafraid to challenge Nick Fury, Tony Stark, Captain America or anyone else who might undermine her authority. But in the movies, S.H.I.E.L.D. is firmly in the pro-Avengers camp, leaving some wiggle room for Hill’s presence.
In an interview with Vulture, Cobie Smulders made a seemingly throwaway comment about her character’s changes. “They’re very sleek, and very leather,” she said, speaking of Hill’s costumes. “And she has superpowers and is hyperintelligent; a very nice, fine woman who has all the answers.”
Hill, as we know, doesn’t have superpowers in the comic books. It’s hard to think off the bat what those powers might be, or whether Smulders is just mixing up Hill’s considerable arsenal of gadgets. After all, an invisibility field or some cool super-speed boots could replicate the meta-effect.

Before being cast as General Zod in "Man of Steel," Michael Shannon wasn't typically known for blockbuster action roles. But a lot has changed in the moviemaking industry since the first "Superman" movie was made in 1978, making it easier for the acting savant to transition to a stunt-heavy schedule.
"Unfortunately for [Shannon's role-predecessor Terence] Stamp, they didn't have CGI back then," Shannon remarked in an interview with The Province. "I'm being spared a lot of the drudgery that he had to endure. From time to time I'm in a harness, but I don't think anywhere near as much as he was."
Most of the details on the new film have been kept tightly under wraps -- it's not clear how prominent of a villain Shannon's General Zod will be, whether a scheming genius working behind the scenes or a physical brute going toe-to-toe with the last son of Krypton.

With the popularity of comic book movies at an all-time high, the absence of Krypton’s last son from summer lineups seems especially conspicuous, given talk that lesser-known characters like Dr. Strange and Shang Chi are being discussed for their own movies. This is Superman, after all — one of the most popular comic book characters of all time and the owner of the best spit-lick in town...
However, although the ball was slow to roll, the upcoming "Superman: Man Of Steel" movie seems to be moving forward. The director has been chosen (Zack Snyder), many of the main characters have been cast, and script details are slowly leaking out. And while we would never presume to know what the filmmakers are thinking, it's worth noting that a lot's riding on this project: if a second attempt at relaunching the franchise goes wrong, who knows when Superman will ever see the screen again?...

We asked you yesterday what you thought about the just released trailer for "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," and the response was overwhelmingly positive. But what did your friendly neighborhood MTV Movies Blog team think?
From unexpected excitement to continued skepticism, the faithful wordsmiths aboard the good ship Movies Blog had a wide range of reactions to the "Apes" trailer. Check them out past the jump!
Jeremy Gordon:
"It's easy to be skeptical of the new 'Apes' film -- after all, we are talking about a franchise about talking monkeys. That said, the concept seems intriguing, the actors look dedicated, and the CGI is shockingly realistic. Are we pinning our summer movie hopes on James Franco? Maybe! If he brings some life to the genre, it may be his biggest feat yet on his postmodern resume."
Travis Helwig:

It's been quite a long journey back to the planet of the apes. After Tim Burton and Mark Wahlberg's 2001 remake failed to set hearts ablaze, talk of new entries in the storied franchise quickly fizzled out. Maybe public interest in the movies had waned; maybe, gasp, people no longer found super intelligent apes to be that scary anymore. There were rumors of a new "Apes" project as far back as 2008, but of course, rumors have to be taken with a grain of salt.
But there'll be no more monkeying around: after months of buildup (and one heck of a tease), the first trailer for "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" debuted this morning on Apple. Helmed by "The Escapist" director Rupert Wyatt and dropping this summer, the prequel will show how Earth went from civilization to Charlton Heston in chains. Apparently, it only takes two hours.
