She appeared in the first season as a voice of calm at a men’s prison, with Sean Bean and Stephen Graham as stars, and explains: “Nine of out of 10 men won’t talk. Nine out of 10 women won’t shut up—so I thought I’d have a bit of that.” The second season is at its best when its female inmates open up, venting after grueling and grisly encounters that make Orange Is the New Black look like a trip to Disneyland. Just as impressively cast as the first, this...

Johnny Depp is directing a new film called Modi, which stars Al Pacino, marking Depp's return to directing after 25 years. The production of the film was reportedly disrupted by Depp's behavior, but new images suggest otherwise. Despite working on Modi, fans still hope to see Depp return as Jack Sparrow in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
Johnny Depp is stepping back behind the camera for Modi, the first directorial effort from the former Pirates of the Caribbean star in 25 years. Following his high-profile libel case with Amber Heard, Depp has been concentrating on smaller projects, including return to acting in Jeanne du Barry last year. Now Depp has spoken about Modi, and offered up the first look behind-the-scenes of the movie, including its lead star, Al Pacino.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the images include Depp directing Pacino, and generally seeming at ease on the set of the movie.

Johnny Depp is back in the directors chair — complete with his big signature hats — for the first time in decades.
Depp is seen directing the cast of the film “Modi” in first look photos that were released from the set. Al Pacino plays a supporting role as real-life French art collector Maurice Gangnat.
The film is Depp’s first time directing since the 1997 feature “The Brave,” as well as his first major project after his 2022 legal victory over Amber Heard.
Per the press release, “Modi” follows “the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani in a 48-hour whirlwhind, capturing a chaotic series of events through the streets and bars of war-torn Paris during World War I. On the run from the police, Modi’s desire to end his career and leave the city is dismissed by fellow Bohemians. The chaos reaches a crescendo when he’s faced with a collector who could change his life.

As we welcome in the New Year, we can reveal our annual (non-exhaustive) list of U.S. and international movies we think could grace the festival circuit in 2024. We’ve stuck to our criteria that the project must already be in production and have not already been announced for a festival. More than 70% of our selections last year went on to debut at a major festival. Those that didn’t were largely delayed by the strike or are still in post-production. If the titles below make the cut, it will be a thrilling year on the festival circuit once again.

Although McQueen initially hesitated to share, he eventually revealed his favorite to be “The Magnificent Seven.” A western remake of Akira Kurosawa’s classic “Seven Samurai” from director John Sturges, the 1960 film focuses on a group of seven American gunslingers hired to protect a Mexican village from terrorizing bandits. 2023 may not have been an excellent year for movies, but in spite of everything stacked against it (read: greedy conglomerates run amok), it turned out to be an excellent year of movies. While the fallout of the recent work stoppages will be felt for time to come, some of 2023’s losses will prove to be 2024’s gains, as much-anticipated but strike-delayed films like “Dune: Part Two,” “Drive-Away Dolls,” and Luca Guadagnino’s horny tennis drama “Challengers” have all secured fresh release dates in the first half of the new year.

The third edition of the Red Sea Film Festival, taking place in Jeddah between Nov. 30 – Dec. 9, will be the culmination of a highly successful funding cycle for the Red Sea Film Foundation. Created in 2019 following the lifting of Saudi Arabia’s 30-year cinema ban, the foundation aims to support the local and regional film industry through the organizing and championing of the festival, plus a focus on education and grants.
In 2021, the foundation launched the Red Sea Fund, a financing arm focused on supporting emerging filmmakers and established directors from the Arab world and Africa. Grants were distributed between projects in development, production and post-production. The fund supported 94 projects in the first year and over 250 films in the two years since, including films by acclaimed filmmakers such as Abderrahmane Sissako, Haifaa Al-Mansour and Kaouther Ben Hania.
