MaryAnn’s quick take… This deeply satisfying military drama demonstrates that a simple, even familiar story can be powerfully effective when told with big heart and solid craft. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women; I’m a sucker for stories about dogs
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I might have had something in my eye there by the end of this deeply satisfying military drama, which demonstrates that a simple story — even a familiar one — can be powerfully effective when told with big heart and solid craft.
This one isn’t entirely familiar, however. The honking big freshness to Megan Leavey is right there in the title: here it’s a young woman with no direction in life and few skills for coping with adult relationships who gains confidence and finds purpose when she joins the Marines,...

Surprises when you’re in this line of work are rare. Despite being an animal lover and a dog owner, Megan Leavey was not a movie that was on my radar whatsoever. So, it was an utter delight to come across this earlier on this week and discover that it’s really terrific. Opening today, it’s a true life drama that tugs at your heartstrings in a very real way. Seamlessly blending the “boy and his dog” story, with a gender reversal, with a modern military tale, it works in a big way. This is much more than the tale of a girl and her dog. It’s a tale of friendship, heroism, and sacrifice. It’s one of the year’s best films so far. This true story centers on title character Megan Leavey (Kate Mara), a troubled and aimless woman who found mean in the armed forces,...

Chicago – The poster is what gives away “Megan Leavey” the most. The titular soldier, and her bomb-sniffing dog, below a billowing American flag. So which war is it? Why, it’s the Iraq invasion, where the U.S. military and the politicians at home “freed” the Iraqi citizens from a peaceful life. Making a dog story out of that boondoggle doesn’t make it any more palatable, except to “support the troops.”
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Eventually the film feels like propaganda, because it takes aways all the nastiness of war – and its heinous injuries – and reduces it to platitudes about a girl and her dog. This is based-on-truth, as they say, and adding in uncomfortable working class scenarios about the soldier’s family can’t save the observation that the film is exploitative regarding the real Megan’s life. Surprisingly, there was a similar film about a bomb-sniffing dog in Iraq called...

Confession: I'm a dog lover. So take this praise with a grain of salt if you must – but Megan Leavey had me at first bark. Based on a true story (no, really!), this war drama deftly sidesteps the paths that suck you down in sentimental quicksand. Oh, you'll cry all right. But the movie earns your tears.
Kate Mara is raw and riveting in the title role, a marine who ends up in combat in Iraq with Rex, a bomb-sniffing German shepherd in the Military Police K9 unit. Nobody likes Rex.

A true story so pure that it almost grants its teller the permission to be sloppy, Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s “Megan Leavey” is a bit of a mess from the moment it starts, but it’s hard to completely dismiss any movie with a soul this strong, just as it would be hard to dismiss a disobedient puppy so long as its tail keeps wagging. An unlikely mutt that crossbreeds the cuteness of “Must Love Dogs” with the suspense of “The Hurt Locker,” “Megan Leavey” is the kind of movie that writes itself, and often feels as though it has.
Based on the very real, very believable bond between a young marine corporal and the volatile German Shepherd with whom she partners during her tours of duty in Iraq, this broadly engaging drama is gripping when it deals with the details of being a woman on the front lines, and it...

Side-stepping the more explicit aspects of war, the biopic Megan Leavey focuses on the story of a woman who finds a higher calling, though not of a religious variety. A wild child from a broken Rockland County home, she ultimately finds the kind of camaraderie she’d been missing in her upbringing through a canine. Played masterfully by Kate Mara, Leavey is an aimless young woman who leaves a dead-end daycare job, deadbeat mom Jackie (Edie Falco), and life behind to join the Marines. Despite the discipline instilled, she still finds ways of returning to her old self, including one drunken night in which public urination lands her a reassignment to the K9 unit under the command of Gunny Martin (Common), the kind of tough love commander who tells it like it is while providing mentorship to those that ask.

One of the very real, very obvious consequences of a film industry that marginalises women filmmakers is that the majority of stories we see onscreen are those of men. Scientists, artists, politicians, world leaders, inventors and outstanding heroes – film after film celebrating testosterone-based contributions to the world. That’s not to say that biopics of women don’t exist, of course – we have plenty about Cleopatra, Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth, for example. We also now have Suffragette. Occasionally, there’s a Monster, or even a The Positively True Adventures Of The Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom – but rarely do we see stories celebrating real women achieving real, positive things in the modern world. This is why a film like Megan Leavey is so important, and why it is exciting to have multiple award-winner Edie Falco join the cast.

Choice bit of trivia that she told the audience before the cameras were running: when she was a waitress working in La (before her big break on SNL), Johnny Depp would eat at her restaurant and leave extremely generous tips. She said he told her that his mom had once been a waitress.
After the taping, I hightailed it over to the Bob Bullock Museum where I left my car in the garage for the day and waded through the book festival on Congress towards the Driskill. The first Austin Film Festival item on my schedule for Saturday was the panel led by Elizabeth Hunter and Pamela Gray on "The Heroine's...

Stars: Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis, Thomas D. Mahard | Written by Pamela Gray | Directed by Tony Goldwyn
Wow, Hollywood galore. When you think of films from this place you imagine big stars, a thrilling storyline, a cathartic ending and an emotive tale. This has it all and more; it’s packed with cliché after cliché which at points becomes almost humorous. We’re taken through ups and down that throw emotions at you left, right and centre. But strangely enough, this is actually quite an enjoyable film. You just need to let yourself give into the conventions of Conviction.
All the characters in this film are based on real people, because this is a film about a real case that started in 1983. Betty Anne (Swank) and Kenny Waters (Rockwell) are the closest a brother and sister can be through their childhood of deviant behaviour to when...

'Unstoppable'
You can't say you don't know what your gonna get with a Tony Scott movie about a runaway freight train and the attempts by two men—played by Denzel Washington and Chris Pine – to stop it: flashy directing, non-stop action and big explosions. Yet Unstoppable deserves more credit than that synopsis might imply. This is the kind of action movie that Scott was directing back in the '90s before he redefined 'going overboard' with the Transformers series. Back then Scott was relatively restrained and there was a level of intelligence in his filmmaking that his more recent work has lacked (although it's still evident Scott Free productions such as The Good Wife).
Although not quite as good as Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State and Spy Game, Unstoppable at least harks back to those days. The almost always watchable Denzel Washington is a reliable leading man...

Music Of The Heart (1999) Direction: Wes Craven Cast: Meryl Streep, Angela Bassett, Aidan Quinn, Cloris Leachman, Gloria Estefan, Kieran Culkin, Charlie Hofheimer, Michael Angarano, Jay O. Sanders Screenplay: Pamela Gray Oscar Movies Recommended with Reservations Meryl Streep, Music of the Heart Wes Craven, the director of the Scream franchise and of the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, is hardly the kind of filmmaker from whom one would expect a syrupy motion picture about a determined violin teacher who wins the hearts and minds of her inner-city school students. Yet, Craven is the man responsible for Music of the Heart, a film completely devoid of slashed faces, lethal stabbings, and deadly fingernails. Instead, this distaff version of Mr. Holland's Opus — with touches of To Sir with Love — offers loads of sentiment, some classical music (violinists Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, and Mark O'Connor appear as themselves), plenty of bad pop [...]...

Chicago – The incredible true story of Betty Anne Waters and her beloved brother Kenny has enough dramatic potential for any pair of talented actors and a competent director to turn it into quality cinema. The fact that director Tony Goldwyn is just barely competent enough to pull it off is off-set by the fact that he was smart enough to perfectly cast the piece, no more so than in the mega-talented leads, Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
The story of “Conviction” is remarkable. An innocent man went to prison — a disturbing commonality in America. While most men who go behind bars under false testimony, forged evidence, or other such purely evil devices completely disappear into the system, Kenny Waters had a secret weapon — his devoted sister. Instead of allowing injustice to steal the most important person in her life, Betty Anne took the long-but-only route to get her...

Last year, noticing that studios throughout Hollywood were posting the screenplays for their “Oscar movies” online for free, I compiled the download links for every screenplay I could find and posted them to this site. The article was a hit, many of the screenplays were downloaded, and things went quiet…until a few months ago, when the page started getting a lot of traffic again, no doubt thanks to the start of this year’s Oscar season.
The problem was, a lot of those studio sites from last year have been taken down, so if, say, you try to click the link to download the Avatar script, you get an ugly Not Found error. I won’t make that same mistake again: this year, I’ve downloaded all the new screenplays and stored them here, so the links will always work.

Never Let Me Go: "I am positive that somewhere Mark Romanek has created a two-and-a-half, maybe even three hour version of this tale, which is just as poetic and haunting and beautiful as the novel. Unfortunately, the version being screened in theaters is a jagged replica, a shoddy version pockmarked with gaping bullet holes like a rural road sign. It feels like Alex Garland copied pages of the novel on index cards and then riffled them into the viewer's face like a mean-spirited version of 52-Pick Up. Every complexity and nuance that makes the novel worthwhile is simonized until every character is one-note and the love story is thrust sloppily into the forefront. It becomes just another period love triangle where two girls fight over one strange boy, only it's set in a world where they're just meatbags on sale at Costco. Is it touching and moving? Well, of course,...

It’s hard not to be a tad cynical about this Oscar-paint-by-numbers offering from director Tony Goldwyn and screenwriter Pamela Gray because that’s just what Conviction is: a shamelessly wanton Academy Awards contender with a double-statuette-winning leading lady in Hilary Swank to boot. It is, nevertheless, a watchable one.
Conviction has the melodrama, the struggle, and the real-life story claim, as well as doing its duty in highlighting the worthy cause of the organisation in the story, The Innocence Project, that tries to exonerate wrongly convicted people through DNA. By any standards, it’s Oscar gold.
That said, even with Swank putting her heart and soul into the role of legal eagle Betty Anne Waters, a woman who puts herself through law school to defend her older brother, Kenny (Sam Rockwell), who is convicted of murder and sentenced to life in 1983, the rather bland and play-safe script restricts what...

I love Hilary Swank! The two-time Academy Award winner is a down-to-earth and sweet person! I interviewed her for .Amelia. last year, and this year, I chatted with her for her new film .Conviction.. Swank plays the true-life character of Betty Anne Waters, a working mother whose love for her wrongfully convicted brother is so deep that she will do anything to help set him free.
The ensemble cast is great headed by Swank and Sam Rockwell who plays her brother, Kenny. Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis, and Melissa Leo complete the cast.
In this interview, Swank and I talked about:
. What got her interested in the film both as an actress and as an executive producer?
. What.s her attraction to true-life stories?
. How did she prepare for the role?
. How did she pick the actors to work with?
Written by Pamela Gray and directed by Tony Goldwyn, .Conviction. is out in theaters right now.

In this interview, Swank and I talked about:
. What got her interested in the film both as an actress and as an executive producer?
. What.s her attraction to true-life stories?
. How did she prepare for the role?
. How did she pick the actors to work with?

This film shouldn't work. It's got all the hallmarks of...well, a fucking Hallmark Channel film. It's based on the true story of a working-class Massachusetts mother who puts herself through law school so she can overturn her ne'er-do-well brother's conviction after he's been imprisoned for 18 years on a bogus murder charge. The cast contains three actresses I can't fucking stand -- Minnie Driver, Hilary Swank, and Juliette Lewis. It's so paint-by-numbers emotionally exploitative you can still see the black crease marks marked "happy" and "sad." But Boston is the new black, and by harshing up those vowels and dropping the r's and giving the actors free reign with those lovable blue-collar f-bombs, Tony Goldwyn makes Pamela Gray's script fucking work. Their last collaboration resulted in what some folks find one of the most underrated sexual-awakening flicks of all time, A Walk on the Moon. You can see every...

The new drama Conviction is based on a true story and aspires to be an inspirational tale of a scrappy underdog fighting the system similar to Rudy and Erin Brokovich. And like those films, Conviction benefits from some great actors helping to tell this true tale.
The movie begins in 1980 at a horrific crime scene . A woman in Ayer, Ma has been brutally murdered in her tiny, trailer park home. Officer Nancy Taylor (Frozen River’s Melissa Leo) picks up Kenny Waters (Moon’s Sam Rockwell) for questioning(this after a heated verbal altercation). Kenny’s sister Betty Ann (Amelia’s Hilary Swank) and her hubby Rick (Mumford’s Loren Dean) pick him up from the police station after his release. A couple years pass and Kenny is picked up again and charged with the murder. After hearing damning testimonies from his former girlfriends (Zodiak’s Clea DuVall and Old School...

Conviction

Director: Tony Goldwyn Writer: Pamela Gray Starring: Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis, Melissa Leo, Drew Smith Kenny Waters (Sam Rockwell) is the local wise-ass and troublemaker of an otherwise quaint and peaceful rural lower-middle-class Massachusetts town (Kenny is the type of guy who dances at a local bar with his baby daughter, then gets into a bar brawl and buys a shot for the unsuspecting victim of his headbutt, then performs a striptease on stage with the cover band); therefore when a local woman is brutally murdered in her trailer-home, Kenny is the very first (and, apparently, the only) suspect to be arrested. Upon making some snarky and sexist comments to the arresting officer, Nancy Taylor (Melissa Leo), Kenny unknowingly condemns himself to a life sentence without parole -- though it takes Officer Taylor another two years (during which time Kenny is set free) to pile up...

Chicago – The United States, with the largest prison population in the Western world, obviously has used the system to incarcerate undesirables in the society, whether they are guilty or not. The access to real justice is played out in the cumbersome “Conviction,” featuring Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver and Melissa Leo.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Conviction is the based-on-truth story of Betty Anne Walters (Hilary Swank), whose brother Kenny (Sam Rockwell) is accused of murder in the early 1980s. When circumstantial evidence and flimsy testimony still garners a conviction, Betty Anne makes a promise to herself to find a way to free Kenny, and begins a journey that takes her to a new path.
Kenny is shown to be a wild man, barely in control, as the flashbacks of he and Betty Anne’s difficult childhood illustrates. When the murder of one his former girlfriends occur, the suspicion immediately points to him.

Conviction
Directed by: Tony Goldwyn
Cast: Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis
Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: October 15, 2010
Plot: After her brother (Rockwell) is convicted of a murder he may not have committed, a mother of two named Betty Ann Waters (Swank) aims to become a lawyer so that she may help exonerate him.
Who’S It For? You do not need to have the selflessness of Betty Ann Waters to really connect with the movie. It’s also possible that even those who are without brothers or sisters could feel something from this about movie sibling love. If true stories about amazing people warm your heart, this is it.
Expectations: I had not seen a trailer, but I went into the film with medium expectations. The cast list had me curious, but I was very crudely afraid that it possibly was going to be like a Lifetime movie.
