Jessica Chastain transformed into flamboyant televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in the new film “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” for which she just earned an Oscar nomination. It is the actress’s third bid at the Oscars, with previous nominations for “The Help” (2011) and “Zero Dark Thirty” (2012).
Chastain spoke with Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson last month about what drew her to playing Bakker, working alongside actors like Andrew Garfield and Cherry Jones and her memories of her first Oscars experience. Watch the full interview above and read the complete transcript below.

Jessica Chastain is showing people a different side of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. Tammy Faye became a popular figure in religious communities after she and husband Jim Bakker, who is portrayed by Andrew Garfield, started the television program The Ptl Club in the '70s. But Tammy Faye didn't reach mainstream popularity until Jim was convicted on numerous counts of fraud and conspiracy in 1989. Additionally, he was accused of raping church secretary Jessica Hahn. Following the fallout of Jim's actions, as well as their divorce, Tammy Faye was ostracized by critics near and far. As Jessica told People, "People were always making her into a clown and punishing...

As a 1990s teenager growing up in the wilds of suburbia, The Howard Stern Show on E! often served as an introduction to the strange, sometimes funny, occasionally disturbing fringes of celebrity. For every major star that visited the Stern Show––Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, Donald Trump (gulp)––there was a Jessica Hahn or Mark Harris, a tabloid icon who excelled at creating controversy. No one in the latter category made more of an impression on this critic’s young mind than Tiny Tim.
As a pop culture-savvy kiddo, I was aware that this odd, Oswald Cobblepot-looking gentleman was a falsetto-voiced singer who had famously married a woman live on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson. But as the Stern interview made clear, there was much more to Tiny Tim than those details. The lengthy chat included his obsessive quest for cleanliness, his love of specific products, a recent incident...

Televangelist Jim Bakker recently suffered a stroke, according to a Facebook post Friday by his wife, Lori. As a result, the 80-year-old preacher will be taking what’s described as a “sabbatical” from his television show.
“For many years now, Jim has been working non-stop, working hard to bring incredible prophets and guests to our show, discovering and developing new products to share … and bringing forth the message for the days that we are living in. All of these projects, and the vigorous warfare that we have experienced in the last several weeks, have taken a huge toll on Jim’s health,” said the Facebook post.
Bakker was most recently chastised for touting a coronavirus cure on his program.
New York State Attorney General Letitia James ordered Bakker not to continue advertising the product, “Silver Solution,” on his website in early March. Four days later, Missouri filed a lawsuit against...

Whatever televangelist Jim Bakker is selling, the New York Attorney General ain’t buying.
Lisa Landau, Chief of the Health Care Bureau, gave The Jim Bakker Show 10 days to comply with a cease-and-desist letter that tells him to stop touting an alleged cure for the coronavirus. The letter was sent Thursday to Bakker’s office and cited a Feb. 12 episode of his show that claimed a Silver Solution sold on his website would be a preventative against the coronavirus.
John Oliver covered the claims on his HBO Last Week Tonight show (see video below at the 17-minute mark).
Bakker was previously convicted of fraud and served time in federal prison related to his activities connected to his popular Praise The Lord (Ptl) Club show, a religious version of mainstream talk shows featuring Jim and wife Tammy Faye Bakker. The couple later divorced in 1992 in the wake of a scandal that...

The rise and downfall of televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker is the focus of a new 20/20 special titled “Unfaithfully Yours,” and in this exclusive clip from the episode, Ted Koppel recounts an interview with the Bakkers in the aftermath of their sex and financial fraud scandals.
The Bakkers’ Ptl Club and religious empire was rocked in 1987 when it was revealed that Jim Bakker had used money from both the TV show and their Christian-themed park, Heritage USA, to negotiate a payment for a secretary with whom he had a sexual encounter.

It’s hard to feel sorry or empathize with those that go on to ‘make bad decisions’ after pointing the finger at others and flinging accusations at others. On one hand Jessica Hahn, whom you might remember from the scandal involving televangelist Jim Bakker, was supposedly taken advantage of since Bakker and another associate apparently drugged her, as was said early on. However Bakker claimed that he was set up and that the sex was consensual. Hahn has even stated over the years that going into the hotel room with Bakker was a bad idea and that she regrets it to

As scandals go, this one was huge.
Televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker had built a multimillion dollar empire in South Carolina. Known as Ptl, it was a conglomerate of Christian-based businesses. In addition to a Christian broadcasting network, it included a theme park, water park and residential complex. It raked in millions of dollars per year.
Jim was known for his all-inclusive messages. Tammy Faye became famous for her garish makeup — false eyelashes, red rouge and heavy lipstick.
But everything came crashing down in 1987, when the Charlotte Observer began investigating the organization’s finances. Among the newspaper’s findings:...

When I first saw "vogueing" -- that is, the manufactured version of it presented in Madonna's "Vogue" video -- all I wanted to do was define it. It's a dance, but it's about rigidity. It's gay, but it's a pantomime of commonplace fashion spreads. It's self-presentational, attitudinal, geometric, contorted, winkingly narcissistic, actually narcissistic, and stony-smirky-silly-serious fierce. It's a mirage, but it's undeniable. It's just the best. And when you see the real thing as presented in the unforgettable 1991 documentary Paris is Burning, you realize that the act of "striking a pose" is just a warped-ass, queeny way of being yourself in the face of your real-life hardship, minority status, and what the world's done to morph you and your flagrant gayness into something much less Op-u-lent.
I'm obviously preaching to the realness choir here, but there's a thundering righteousness to the subjects of Paris is Burning that is just timeless.

The View host Barbara Walter has sparred with guest Jessica Hahn during a discussion on infidelity. Hahn gained notoriety in the 1980s after being involved in a sexual encounter, which she later labeled as non-consensual, with televangelist Jim Bakker. During a 'Where Are They Now' segment on Tuesday's edition of The View, Hahn took offense to classification of her relationship with Bakker as an "affair" and then referenced Walters' own admission in her autobiography Audition that she carried on a romance with married Us Senator Edward Brooke. "This wasn't an affair," Hahn said. (more)...

On The View, this week there are a series of "Where Are They Now?" segments featuring interviews with guests who were the subject of scandals in the past. Jessica Hahn, a woman who had a brief sexual relationship with televangelist Jim Bakker in the 1980's, was today's guest and may have just extended her 15 minutes of fame by rattling co-host Barbara Walters and receiving a scolding for bringing up Walters own sexual history.

Jessica Hahn called out Barbara Walter's affair on 'The View' today. Apparently, earlier today, popular provocative model, escort,or whoever she is, went on ABC's "The View" because they were featuring people who became famous for questionable reasons. Jessica Hahn had an affair with televangelist Jim Bakker way back in 1987. During their discussion, Barbara Walters criticized Jessica for having an affair with a married man. After that, Jessica responded by calling out Barbara on her admitted affair with a married senator. Then Barbara got all pissed off, and said that they were their to discuss Jessica's life not hers.

On Tuesday's episode (Feb. 22) of "The View," Jessica Hahn made an appearance as part of the show's theme this week of interviewing people who were famous for less-than-stellar reasons. Hahn gained notoriety in the 1980s because she had a sexual relationship with TV evangelist Jim Bakker when she was the secretary at his church.
Bakker subsequently went to prison for paying Hahn off to keep quiet. Hahn always said Bakker and another church member drugged and raped her, while Bakker always maintained it was a consensual affair.
During Hahn's segment on "The View," host Barbara Walters took her to task about the sexual relationship, to which Hahn pointed out that Walters wrote in her book about an affair she herself had with a married Senator (Walters' affair with then-Senator Edward William Brooke III was detailed in her book "Audition"). The indignant Walters responded that they were there to talk about Hahn's life,...

On 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated), Jessica Hahn brings up Barbara Walters' affair in the 1970s with married Senator Edward Brooke as a way to contrast her sexual relationship with televangelist Jim Bakker, which Hahn says was rape. But this prompts a strong reaction from Walters, who immediately shuts her down.
Hahn takes exception to Sherri Shepherd's description of her relationship with Bakker as an "affair," and tries to point out how different it was from Walters' dalliance with Brooke. "This wasn't an affair ... I don't want to be cruel or anything, but ... you had an affair with a senator and ... " Hahn started to say to Walters.

DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – Anyone who has ever seen a Sam Kinison stand-up special knows the truth. The man was a genius. Finally, people unfamiliar with the mad preacher will get to see for themselves and those of us old enough to remember Kinison’s all-too-brief time in the spotlight can revisit this inspirational and hilarious comedian on DVD with “Sam Kinison Unleashed”.
The release from the small company Mill Creek Entertainment includes both of Sam’s HBO specials, “Breaking the Rules” from 1987 and “Family Entertainment Hour” from 1991 with never-before-seen footage which is released for the first time on DVD. Kinison would die just a year later in a car accident. I firmly believe that if he was still alive, he’d be rocking audiences with his trademark brand of humor to this day.
