The Boy (2016)

Directed by: William Brent Bell
Cast: Lauren Cohan (Greta), Rupert Evans (Malcolm), Jim Norton (Mr. Heelshire), Diana Hardcastle (Mrs. Heelshire), Ben Robson (Cole)
The scenario most always plays out the same way. A break out hit film or show with an ensemble cast spawns many unrelated off shoots with members of that cast allowed to showcase their talents on a singular level. Sometimes it’s spectacular, sometimes it’s tragic, and sometimes a film that would have completely flown under the radar, breaks through the haze of obscurity because of one golden ticket. That ticket is name recognition, and if the film isn’t a hit, it will at least find its place as a footnote in genre history.

Stx Entertainment served up their new horror/thriller movie, "The Boy," into theaters today, January 22nd, 2016, and we've got some reviews in from a couple of the major, top movie critics in the biz, and it's not such great news. Although, I have seen worse. They gave it some 40 and 50 grades out of a possible 100 at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Ben Robson, Diana Hardcastle, James Russell, Jim Norton, Lauren Cohan and Rupert Evans. We've added statements from the scarce, 2 critics that managed to give it a look-see. Katie Rife over at The A.V. Club, gave it a just average 50 grade, claiming: "At least, maybe The Boy can lead some novices to better, more original horror movies." Then Joe Leydon over at Variety, gave it a 40 grade. He stated: "Despite the assiduous grinding of plot mechanics by William Brent Bell (“The Devil Inside”) and scripter Stacey Menear,...

The Walking Dead's Lauren Cohan is up against a creature even scarier than zombies in the trailer for The Boy.
In what would certainly qualify as the worst nanny job ever, Cohan is hired by an eccentric family to care for a doll who stands in for their dead son.
A little creepy, sure, but sounds easy enough. Until the doll comes alive, that is.
The horror movie is brought to the screen by director William Brent Bell, notable for the 2012 exorcism movie The Devil Inside.
Joining Cohan in the main cast of The Boy are Father Ted's Jim Norton, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel's Diana Hardcastle and The Village's Rupert Evans.
The Boy creeps into cinemas on January 22 in the Us.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Written by Ol Parker

UK | USA, 2015
There are hints of understated charm and elegance sprinkled throughout The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Moments when two people, battered and bruised by life, share some genuine insight about the human condition. Unfortunately, those moments are lost amid a frenzy of unnecessary storylines and cartoonish complications. It’s a treat to see these veteran actors playing off each other, but you’re better off staying at a different hotel.

I know what you may be thinking. “Another weekend, another movie sequel”. Well yes, we do have a follow-up flick in this weekend’s new release batch, but this is a bit different from the escalating, Roman numeral-added blockbuster franchises. The original from 2011, wasn’t a big stunt-filled action flick. Nor was it a crude. lewd lowbrow comedy. It was a modest success that spoke to a nearly neglected audience. This was that rare feature that mainly concerned the senior set, and boasted an almost “Avengers-like” teaming of British cinema and stage actors. That first pairing didn’t conclude on a “cliffhanger”, but many fans would relish the chance to see what happened to their new film friends. After nearly four years, they’re getting that chance to catch-up. For the price of a movie ticket they can reserve a suite at The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

And that was probably the same for all of us," Dame Judi Dench shared in her interview, among other details about filming the second installment. The actors also talked about how their characters grow in the second film, including Lillete Dubey, who talked about her character Mrs. Kapoor's newfound vulnerability and softness, and Tina Desai, who spoke of the expansion of her role as Sunaina. The First Best Loser: Madden’s Wholly Unnecessary Sequel an Exercise in Nothingness
Pandering is the word that best describes the tone of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, John Madden’s follow-up to the 2011 surprise hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Whereas the first film was adapted from the bestselling novel by Deborah Moggach, screenwriter Ol Parker is left to his own sugary devices with this next chapter, volleying most of the respectable returning cast members through a series of utterly vapid subplots that are either forgettable or just plain embarrassing considering the seasoned talents. Some may argue that the chance to see so many exemplary performers of a certain age in a film that will reach mainstream platforms should be appreciated for merely existing, but that’s no excuse for doffing us with such second rate material.
Many of the mainstays from the last film have stuck around...

Although the title suggests it's not quite as good as the first film, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a worthy successor to the 2011 sleeper hit, characterised by the same gentle humour, sunny outlook and slightly doddering plot. Again, it's the talented cast of veterans – Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Celia Imrie among them – who bring the required grace, style and finesse, ably supported by new residents Tamsin Greig and silver fox Richard Gere.
In case the pace gets too leisurely, Dev Patel is always on hand like a shot of epinephrine, bouncing off the walls as Jaipur entrepreneur Sonny who is courting an American firm to bankroll plans for the titular second hotel.

Let’s begin with the plot. Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) and Muriel Donnelly (Maggie Smith) are the co-managers of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” in Jaipur, India. Their hotel is unique as it serves as a special retirement/finding yourself sanctuary. The two co-managers have the ambition to expand, an ambition met with hoops to jump through. Pivotal to the story is Sonny’s wedding to Sunaina (Tina Desai). A wedding comes armed with beautiful clothes, lots of dancing and oh yes – high octane drama. From the beginning, jealousy and insecurity are the driving force in most of the relationships, indeed interesting areas to explore.
Nonetheless, the film is left half-baked, without spark. This is disappointing as the concepts portrayed are powerful,...

On a mid February evening, Leicester Square was draped in pink and orange, the colours of Rajasthan. Although the heat of Rajasthan was certainly absent, with the London air becoming increasingly biting, one could have been stood in India at a wedding.
The air heavy with Bhangra and Bollywood beats, archways protruding with colourful marigold flowers, it was time to celebrate the world premiere of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel!
The evening was one full of fun and celebration.
Karan’s Bollywood Masterclass (Kbm) built up the anticipation and entertained the public waiting with their slick Bollywood moves to beats such as Taal, Nagara Sang Dhol and Malang.
Gracing the orange carpet were the cast and crew of the film including Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith, Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Tina Desai, Lillete Dubey, Diana Hardcastle, Shazad Latif, director John Madden, writer Ol Parker and producer Graham Broadbent.

The sequel to Fox Searchlight’s 2012 sleeper hit, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, has registered a new trailer today that pulls the curtain back a bit more than the one we saw back in August. Richard Gere, Tamsin Greig and David Strathairn are the newest guests at the Indian inn for the “elderly and beautiful” which Dev Patel and Maggie Smith are successfully running. Patel’s Sonny is looking to expand, but it’s making more claims on his time than he has available — especially considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina (Tina Desai). The original returning cast also includes Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton, Ronald Pickup, Diana Hardcastle and Lillete Dubey. Directed by John Madden from an original screenplay by Ol Parker, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opens in the UK on February 26 and in the U.S. on March 6.

When "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" was released back in 2012, it turned into something of a sleeper hit, grossing more than $100 million worldwide and firmly placing it amongst specialty smashes of the year (alongside "Moonrise Kingdom" and "To Rome With Love"). Still, it seems like an unlikely film to warrant a sequel, but that's just what it's getting, in the form of "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2."
Fox announced that production on the sequel started today (via Coming Soon), with director John Madden and screenwriter Ol Parker returning behind the scenes. In front of the camera, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Penelope Wilton, Diana Hardcastle, Tena Desae, and Lillete Dubey are all set to return. Gere and Grieg will be new occupants,...
