Will Packer on Kevin Hart’s dramatic turn in ‘Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist’ and their star-studded cast
Image
Producer Will Packer has some thoughts on longtime collaborator Kevin Hart.

“Oh man, I tell you: I'm so tired of carrying that guy! My back is sore carrying that Kevin Hart!” Packer laughed while chatting with Gold Derby at an FYC event at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel celebrating Peacock's Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist. The all-star limited series is their latest team-up following such comedies as Ride Along and the Think Like a Man franchise.

But Packer admitted that despite the dramatic weight of the series — which unravels the unexpected story of how Muhammad Ali’s 1970 comeback fight and a jaw-dropping robbery at the posh planned afterparty — once he got involved, “the very first call that I made was to Kevin. He's legitimately one of my best friends in the business.”

Packer’s timing coincided with Hart’s attempt to remake the Sidney Poitier-Bill Cosby comedy classic Uptown Saturday Night,...

Taraji P. Henson Says Hollywood ‘Lied to Me’ About Black Movies and TV Not Selling Overseas, Spent Years Being ‘Graceful in Getting Paid Less … Not Anymore Though!’
Image
Taraji P. Henson joined Stacy L. Smith, founder of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, at the Cannes Film Festival for a Kering Women in Motion Talk in which the Oscar nominee spoke honestly about course-correcting her priorities in Hollywood. Henson recently took a month off from work and relocated to Bali after feeling “discouraged” by the film and TV industry machine.

“I was just frustrated and it was making me bitter, and I’m not a bitter person,” Henson said, nodding to continued struggles in Hollywood over the lack of prominent roles, pay and awards recognition for women of color. “I made a promise to myself if I ever got there then it’s time to walk away. I’m not serving myself or the audience or the characters I play. Thank god I did that. I came back refreshed and with a new perspective.

“Sometimes in the industry you make...

Breaking Baz @ Cannes: Spike Lee Croons Rodgers & Hammerstein On The Beach But Tunes Out As Talk Turns To Him Making A Movie Musical His Next Project
Image
The sound system at the Carlton Beach was blasting out James Brown’s “The Boss” while, incongruously, Spike Lee was engaged in a Rodgers and Hammerstein sing-along.

“There’s a bright, golden haze on the meadow,” Lee crooned. “The corn is as high as a elephant’s eye,

an’ it looks like it’s climbin’ clear up to the sky.”

Lee cleared his throat and cried, “That’s juxtaposition, right there. That’s juxtaposition.’

I joined him on the “Oh, what a beautiful mornin’! Oh, what a beautiful day!” chorus. I jokingly suggested that we do “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top” next, but Lee shrugged that off.

There was a point to the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein tribute.

Lee’s great movie Highest 2 Lowest opens with Matthew Libatique’s cameras taking in the Manhattan skyline as the city awakes. “The skyscrapers are the corn as high as an elephant’s eye,...

Taraji P. Henson in Trouble in Tyler Perry's New Thriller 'Straw' Trailer
Image
"It seems like you had a lot to get over today." Indeed. Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for the crime thriller titled Straw, the latest Tyler Perry film created for streaming on Netflix as part of his deal with the film studio. This will be out in June - his second film this year following Duplicity for Prime Video a few months ago. In Straw, Taraji P. Henson a single mother who watches her desperate day spiral into chaos. Sounds like that title is a reference to the idiom about "the last straw." She becomes the prime suspect in a crime she never meant to commit—suddenly, her survival depends on the one thing she’s never been able to trust: the people around her. "She finds herself in a horrible situation where one of those days, you wake up and everything that could go wrong, goes wrong." The film also stars Sherri Shepherd,...

Cannes Draws Unusually High Number of Emmy Hopefuls
Image
Given that (a) the Cannes Film Festival always takes place in mid-May, (b) Primetime Emmy nominations voting always begins in mid-June, and (c) Cannes draws a large cross-section of the entertainment industry and press, it has always made sense for Emmy hopefuls to show up on the Croisette. But arguably, never have more made the pilgrimage than this year.

They have come — or will be coming — for a wide variety of reasons.

Robert De Niro, a best actor in a limited or anthology series or a TV movie contender for Netflix’s Zero Day, who usually does everything he can to avoid the spotlight, jetted in to collect an honorary Palme d’Or on opening night, May 13, and the following day participated in a rendez-vous about his career.

Also at the opening night ceremony, as a spectator, was Marco Calvani, a best supporting actor in a comedy series contender for...

Image
Tyler Perry's array of Netflix projects continues to emerge as his next film for the streaming giant gets a first look. Straw, the upcoming drama starring acclaimed actor and long-time collaborator Taraji P. Henson, drops a new trailer.

Netflix unveiled the Straw trailer on May 14, highlighting Henson's main character, Janiyah, a struggling single mother pushed to her breaking point as she risks her freedom to care for her sick daughter. The trailer shows a conflicted Janiyah apologize as she's shown holding a gun in a bank, saying, "I didn't mean to do this. Something inside of me broke." Janiyah's emotions are all over the place in the trailer as she deals with an eviction, being separated from her daughter and facing increased fallout from a bank robbery she insists she never committed.

According to the official Straw synopsis, "A single mother’s world unravels in chaos as her...

Inside the Netflix Upfront: Charlize Theron, Roger Goodell and Quite a Few Catchphrases
Image
Netflix returned to the upfronts on Wednesday afternoon with a presentation that, at first, looked like it might be a production of Waiting for Gadot.

Initially looking awfully serious, Jude Law and Jason Bateman stood in respective spotlights on an otherwise empty stage at downtown’s Perelman Performing Arts Center in Manhattan. But the facade soon cracked. The dependably sardonic Bateman set up a trailer for their new series, Black Rabbit, as Law played his part and pushed one of the streamer’s chosen slogans of the day: “Welcome to the center of attention.”

The messaging has not changed since the last dog and pony show for media buyers: Netflix has achieved cultural ubiquity in a manner that no other streamer has come close. Naturally, it is the best place for advertising. Right? Right? Amy Reinhard, Netflix’s president of advertising, kicked off a one-ish hour spiel by reiterating that...

Netflix Upfront 2025: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, ‘Stranger Things,’ and Renewals Galore
Image
Netflix returned to the upfronts in fine fashion.

Netflix’s upfront event took place at the Perelman Performing Arts Center in Manhattan. The biggest name in streaming kept things intimate, with a scant 500 or so people in attendance. Compared to Disney, which filled a convention hall at the Javits Center, and NBCUniversal, which took over Radio City Music Hall, Netflix’s presentation felt downright cozy.

Jude Law and Jason Bateman opened the show with some discussion of Netflix’s reach and programming before some playful banter and hyping up their new drama series “Black Rabbit.”

Amy Reinhard, Netflix’s president of advertising, took the stage next, telling advertisers in attendance that Netflix shows are not just put on in the background and ignored. “When you compare us to our competitors, attention starts higher and ends much higher,” Reinhard said. “And even more impressive, members pay as much attention to mid-roll...

The film follows Henson’s character, who faces a series of unfortunate events that lead her down an unexpected path. Straw: Taraji P. Henson, Tyler Perry, Cast, Release Date, Photos, Plot, Trailer
Image
Tyler Perry’s latest film is about someone you’ve probably walked past on the street. Janiyah (played by Taraji P. Henson) is a Tyler Perry heroine in the classic sense: She’s someone who’s trying to get by in the face of overwhelming odds. In Straw, those odds mount to a point of explosive pressure, and Janiyah reaches her breaking point.

“She’s just trying to survive, just trying to be a great mother to her daughter, and then the circumstances in her life cause her to be in this situation,” Perry tells Netflix. “I think that a lot of people around the world, no matter if you’re a Black woman or not, will be able to relate to that feeling of, ‘I’m at my last straw.’”

Read on to learn more about Straw, and check out the trailer for the film above.

Sloan Summit 25: A Look Back at Some of Our Favorite Sloan Grantee Films
Philippe Tlokinski in Adventures of a Mathematician (2020)
With the 2025 Sloan Film Summit just around the corner, we want to look back at some of our favorite films that have been supported in the past by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. These films are dramas, science fictions, biopics and big budget blockbusters. Yes, they all have science, math, technology, economics or engineering at their core, and this list goes to show just how much storytelling juice you can get out of those topics.

The films on this list show how universal stories about the sciences can be. We all care about nature, we all look up at the stars and wonder and we all love solving a good puzzle. And that’s what the sciences are all about. Both art and science help you understand the world better, just in different ways, and these films prove what you can do when they come together.

Kevin Costner Wanted to Cry While Shooting This Movie and His Hard Work Paid Off With $228.4 Million Earning at Box Office
Image
A man’s got to know his limitations… and still choose to defy them. That line is not from a movie, not yet, but it should be. Because that’s exactly what we thought when we found out Kevin Costner filmed most of Hidden Figures while in pain. No, seriously. While the world applauded his performance as Al Harrison, the no-nonsense NASA boss in the Oscar-nominated drama, the Yellowstone star was quietly fighting off kidney stones and crushing discomfort. He wanted to cry.

Yes, the actor nearly cried while filming Hidden Figures. And not because the script was moving, though it was, but because he was literally suffering in silence, acting his heart out with kidney stones tearing through him.

Six Years Later, Jussie Smollett’s Alleged Hate Crime Hoax Ends on a Strangely Anti-Climactic Note
Image
After six long years of public scrutiny, legal battles, and career setbacks, actor Jussie Smollett’s case has reached a settlement that feels more like a hushed footnote than a dramatic finale. In a recent development, Smollett has settled for the infamous 2019 episode that caught national attention. The city of Chicago had sued Smollett for the incident for $130,000; this was done to recover the costs of investigating what authorities labeled as an orchestrated hate crime.

While the settlement is yet to be finalized, with another court hearing set for May 29, 2025, the ruling feels a lot like an understated conclusion for a case that once dominated news articles, tabloids, and primetime headlines.

Jussie Smollett’s journey from victim to defendant

On January 29th, 2019, Jussie Smollett went to the Chicago Police to report a hate crime that he’d been on the receiving end of. He reported that two men, one of whom he claimed was white,...

Quinta Brunson is only the third Black woman to host ‘SNL’ multiple times
Image
Quinta Brunson is about to join a rare group that only includes Queen Latifah and Maya Rudolph.

On May 3, the two-time Emmy winner for Abbott Elementary will host Saturday Night Live for the second time in her career. Only two Black women have ever hosted SNL multiple times: Latifah in 2003 and 2004, and Rudolph in 2012, 2021, and 2024.

The first time Brunson emceed NBC's late night program in April 2023, she went viral for the "Bosses" sketch in which she and Sarah Sherman played bald, chauvinistic male executives who acted inappropriately toward a new female employee (Chloe Fineman). Brunson's character was obsessed with Fineman's "big old buttered yams," proclaiming, "What I wouldn't do to jump off a diving board and cannonball into that cleavage. Help, I'm drowning! But don't save me — I want to die in there."

Other notable sketches included "Traffic Altercation," where Brunson got into a fight with Mikey Day while stuck in traffic; "Drug Dealer,...

Michelle Obama Breaks Silence On Why She Skipped Trump’s Inauguration, Says She Needed Intense Therapy After White House
Image
Former First Lady Michelle Obama recently opened up in an episode of her podcast, Imo, to discuss her choice to skip President Donald Trump‘s inauguration back in January.

Her absence from the spotlight after the new year sparked rumors of scandal and marital discord between her and her husband, former President Barack Obama, but now she is saying that it was “the only choice that was right.”

In her podcast, guest Taraji P. Henson got candid about living life in the spotlight and criticisms toward black women.

“People couldn’t believe that I was saying no, they had to assume that my marriage was falling apart,” Obama said, “It took everything in my power not to do the thing that was perceived as right.”

The former First Lady said she had to “trick” herself into following through to skip the inauguration by ensuring she would have nothing to wear...

Netflix is bringing the heat this summer with more original movies
Image
Netflix will bring some major hits to us this summer with more original movies. Well, they hope they're hits. We'll just hope they're entertaining enough to give us another reason to stay inside and beat the heat. Now, where's that blender...

This summer promises to be a scorcher. You can thank Netflix for that. Oh, you thought I meant the weather. Nah, that's a topic for another time and place. I'm talking about the heat your favorite streaming service is bringing to your retro Nokia, your 87th-generation iPad, or your massive 105" mini-oled media altar.

However you watch, and whatever you watch, you'll want to catch these. You don't have to pay $30 for a couple of tickets and then another $40 for sodas and a large popcorn to be entertained. Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't go to the movies, despite what CEO Ted Sarandos says about movie theaters. All I'm saying is,...

‘Abbott Elementary’ Bosses Unpack Ava’s Strides by Season 4 Finale, Tease ‘New Beats’ in Season 5
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Abbott Elementary” Season 4, Episode 22.

After “Abbott Elementary” shook up dynamics with Ava’s firing earlier this season, the Season 4 finale restored Ava back to her rightful place: Behind the principal’s desk.

As soon as Ava (Janelle James) returns as principal, she begins her “second term” by instituting a number of questionable executive orders, which showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker said Ava likely heard in the zeitgeist in the midst of Trump’s recent slew of executive orders and begin using the term herself. Despite getting right back to her shenanigans, it’s undeniable that some character growth happened during her time away from Abbott.

“She certainly made strides in her job and what she cares about — she made this decision to come back to the school, even though she obviously could have made more money elsewhere, so that’s certainly character growth,...

Siebert is a long-serving Gersh loyalist who joined the agency in the mid-1980s. Here Siebert discusses Gersh’s plan for growth and how she aims to build on its long legacy in Hollywood.

Halle Berry says Oscars not designed for black female actors ‘so we have to stop coveting them’
Whoopi Goldberg, Will Smith, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Viola Davis, Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, and Dwayne Johnson in Number One on the Call Sheet (2025)
The only black female actor to have won the leading actress award was speaking on documentary Number One on the Call Sheet along with Taraji P Henson and Whoopi Goldberg

Halle Berry has said she now believes her historic Oscars win in 2002, for Monster’s Ball, was an anomaly, and that fellow black female actors should therefore stop “coveting” Academy Awards.

Berry, now 58, is the only black woman to have won the leading actress Oscar in the awards’ nearly 100 year history. Cynthia Erivo’s nomination for Wicked earlier this year marks the first time a woman of colour has been nominated for the leading actress Oscar more than once (she was previously nominated for Harriet). Only 15 black women have ever been in contention for the prize.

Halle Berry Reflects on Being the Only Black Best Actress Oscar Winner: “Did It Really Change Anything for Women of Color?”
Image
Halle Berry is opening up about being the first — and only — Black woman to have won the Oscar for best actress in the nearly 100-year history of the Academy Awards.

In the Apple TV+ documentary Number One on the Call Sheet, Berry reflects on what has happened since she won the Oscar in 2002, for her role in Monster’s Ball. In that time, no other Black actress has taken home the award.

“It’s forced me to ask myself, did it matter?” Berry asks. “Did it really change anything for women of color? For my sisters? For our journey?”

The documentary shows a montage of Black actresses losing out to white women at the Oscars. Overall, 13 Black actresses have been nominated for the honor, including, most recently, Cynthia Erivo, who’s been nominated twice. This year, Erivo was nominated for her role in Wicked but lost to Anora star Mikey Madison.

How UTA’s Succession Plan Reverberates for Talent Agency Rivals
Image
On March 17, Jeremy Zimmer, the co-founder and CEO of UTA, informed staff at the agency that he would be stepping aside.

In a choreographed succession maneuver, 66-year-old Zimmer named the 56-year-old David Kramer (who he had elevated to president of UTA just a couple years prior) his successor at the agency. Zimmer told staff that he would stick around for the year as executive chairman, and remain on the UTA board.

“Let’s be honest, the chances that I’m going to start an aluminum company in Alaska or a cement company in Cleveland are pretty slim. So this is not goodbye,” he quipped in his note to staff.

Zimmer’s exit and Kramer’s ascension, however, comes at an intriguing moment for talent agencies, which are seeking to adapt to the new world of media just as much as Hollywood writ large.

UTA’s changing of the guard also...
