He is known for his ear for dialects, which often vary from role to role for him. This may be due partially to his assimilation to various regions while his parents moved him around as a kid.

In 1943, his grandfather Walter Huston starred in a film called Edge of Darkness (1943). In 2009, he starred in a film with the same name Edge of Darkness (2010), based on the British mini-series.

His divorce from Katie Evans was never finalized. She committed suicide in 2008.

He and his Hitchcock (2012) cast mate, Anthony Hopkins have both played King Richard the Lionheart. Hopkins made his film debut in that role in The Lion in Winter (1968), while Huston played the part in Robin Hood (2010). They have also both played members of the Adams political clan: Huston played Samuel Adams in John Adams (2008), while Hopkins played his cousin John Quincy Adams in Amistad (1997).

His father was of English, Scottish, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, distant German, and remote Portuguese, ancestry. His mother was of English and Indian ancestry.
