Palter died May 21 of lung cancer at his home in Los Angeles, his daughter, Catherine Palter, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Plus, he portrayed an LAPD detective on the 1976-77 CBS series Delvecchio, starring Judd Hirsch.
Palter joined CalArts in 1971 and served as an acting teacher and director at the Santa Clarita school until his retirement in 2013, but he also conducted private workshops and taught around the country and around the world, including in Edinburgh and at Carnegie Mellon and UCLA.

Nine years after he won his fourth and final acting Emmy for playing Walter White on “Breaking Bad,” Bryan Cranston has a solid shot at triumphing in the corresponding Best Drama Guest Actor category for reprising the role on the prequel series “Better Call Saul” on AMC. In fact, he has three chances to win at least his fifth acting Emmy this year since he could also earn notices for Best Movie/Limited Actor for Paramount Plus’ “Jerry and Marge Go Large” and for Best Drama Actor for Showtime’s “Your Honor.” If all three nominations come to fruition, he will be only the fourth person and second man to ever compete for three acting Emmys at once.
Cranston’s highly anticipated “Better Call Saul” appearance consists of several flashback scenes in which he reunites with his “Breaking Bad” cast mates Bob Odenkirk and Aaron Paul. His two episodes aired...

The '80s was a pretty great time to be an undead bloodsucker. Writers and directors were clearly enjoying themselves playing with the old tropes; Tony Scott's "The Hunger" dispensed with fangs altogether and toyed with the idea of vampire immortality before turning into softcore erotica; Nicolas Cage lost the plot and munched live cockroaches in "Vampire's Kiss;" Kathryn Bigelow brought a Western theme to her mean and moody "Near Dark;" and "Lifeforce" even gave us vampires from outer space. To top it all off, Count Dracula teamed up with other classic Universal monsters like the Wolf Man and the Mummy in "The Monster Squad." These movies left behind the spooky castles and misty graveyards of Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee's iconic iterations of Bram Stoker's most famous creation, bringing the vampire myth right into the modern world.

On July 9, 1982, Disney unveiled the sci-fi actioner Tron in theaters, where it would gross $33 million and, decades later, get a sequel in Tron: Legacy. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
It would be all too easy to describe the Disney Studios’ Tron as yet another special effects movie in a year that has seen special effects achieve unprecedented heights of sophistication and technical virtuosity. It is that, of course, and it probably relies more heavily on computer-generated animations than any other movie yet produced. Both the eye and the mind are continually boggled by a bombardment of images that quite literally defy description. Who could hope to describe the electronically produced transformations that take place at faster-than-lightning speeds in the complex circuitry of a computer? They must be seen to be believed and even then you’re not quite sure.
But young Steven Lisberger, who both wrote and directed Tron,...

It’s been a while since I penned a Which is Better article on here, so, as seen as Summer is making me wish Autumn was here, and I’m counting down the days for the Halloween season, I figured I’d go back to two of my favourite vampire movies ever, and pit them against each other in this almost-pointless-because-it’s-subjective-anyway battle of evil versus evil, vamp versus vamp. Fright Night versus The Lost Boys.
*Cue People are Strange by The Doors*
Ok, so I grew up with The Lost Boys on my television set and the record of the soundtrack echoing from the stereo system. I have always had a lot of fondness for the 80s glam-vamp teen-comedy that featured some of the big names from the era, with Keifer Sutherland in the role of head-but-not-quite-head vampire, David, Jason Patrick and Corey Haim as brothers Micheal and Sam,...

“One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach … All the damn vampires.”
-Grandpa (Barnard Hughes), The Lost Boys
I respectfully disagree with Grandpa’s sentiment. My favorite part about watching the faux coastal fantasia of Santa Carla is all the damn vampires. Despite being very much a time capsule capturing a certain place and cultural moment, The Lost Boys is simultaneously, a bit paradoxically, as immortal as its titular teenage vampires when it comes to being a genre staple. The 1987 horror comedy was helmed by the late great Joel Schumacher, who passed away on June 22nd. It is being celebrated today ahead of its return to Southern California theaters this Thursday at the Mission Tiki Drive-In, on a double bill with that other terrific ’80s vampire horror comedy, Fright Night (1985). It’s hard to articulate just how special and singular The Lost Boys is, but I have to try.

Veteran and beloved filmmaker Joel Schumacher has died at the age of 80 after a year-long battle with cancer.
Having started out his career as a costume designer, Schumacher soon saw his love of film take him in a new direction landing up in the director’s chair. He rose to fame after directing three hit films that wrapped up the 80s’ in a nutshell with 1985s’ ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ which starred Brat packers, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez alongside Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham. It centres on a clique of recent graduates of Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown University, and their adjustment to post-university life and the responsibilities of adulthood.

Joel Schumacher’s vampire romp endures for its wonderfully grown-up treatment of being young
This sprightly and satirical 80s spin on Jm Barrie’s “lost boys” from director Joel Schumacher is now rereleased in UK cinemas. Screenwriter Jeffrey Boam was reportedly drafted in to sex’n’goth up a story that was originally much more innocently Peter Pan-ish, and yet this version probably has more to say about the concept of staying for ever young.
The film is certainly an amazing time capsule for the 80s and arguably one of the great 80s kids-heroism movies, to put alongside Et: The Extra Terrestrial and The Goonies. Teenager Michael (Jason Patric) and his kid brother, Sam (Corey Haim), are arriving in a new town – the fictional Californian coastal resort of Santa Carla – with their mother, Lucy (Dianne Wiest), following her divorce, staying with their crusty old grandpa (Barnard Hughes). “Joker” did its job at the movie theaters, setting a box-office record for an October opening with $93 million in ticket sales – quite robust for an R-rated comic book spinoff. The origin story also lit a bonfire of critical division and controversy as it portrays Batman’s eventual arch-nemesis, Arthur Fleck, as a product of constant abuse in a rotting city that offers no safe haven for this human punching bag. No wonder during one break in what turns into a killing spree, he empties his refrigerator and hides in it.

The Criterion Collection certainly walks its own path in making films available on Blu-ray. In October 2018, for example, traditionally a month when distributors focus on horror titles, Criterion will be issuing only one thriller that might fall into that category. But what a thriller! Just 32 years of age at the time of its release, Brian DePalma's Sisters started a delirious run of thrillers for him during the 70s -- my personal favorite remains Obsession -- that firmly established him in New Hollywood. The late Margot Kidder is great as a mysterious model, with Jennifer Salt as a reporter who witnesses a murder in the model's apartment. The cast includes William Finley, Charles Durning and Barnard Hughes. But writer/director DePalma is really the star...

The Tony Awards just toasted the best productions and performers of the past Broadway season, and in a few weeks two of the big winners there — Tony Shalhoub and Laurie Metcalf — may find themselves feted with nominations for Emmy Awards, too.
Shalhoub, who is a strong contender at the Emmys for the Amazon comedy series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” took home his first Tony Award his leading role in the musical “The Band’s Visit.” Metcalf, who is in the running at the Emmys for reprising her award-winning role on the reboot of sitcom “Roseanne,” claimed her second consecutive Tony this year for her brilliant performance in Edward Albee’s “Three Tall Women.”

Norman Lear’s Cold Turkey is preferred by 4 out of 5 doctors, and the other doctor is a fool that doesn’t smoke cigarettes. Lear’s triple-threat writing, producing and directing effort is by no means a lazy comedy, with its twenty featured actors dashing around like asylum inmates for ninety minutes. It’s not the show to help one kick the habit, that’s for sure — even though it makes smoking look appropriately disgusting.

Pictures like Midnight Cowboy pulled everyone my age group into the movies, while the entire older generation likely stopped going to movies altogether. John Schlesinger’s masterpiece can boast a number of firsts, and deserves the high praise it receives from every angle — this was the epitome of progressive filmmaking circa 1969.

A story of murders in the ER becomes, courtesy of writer Paddy Chayefsky, either a preview of social breakdown or an impassioned examination of why we invest our lives and souls in imperfect institutions. George C. Scott is the doctor coming apart at the seams, who meets his match in a New Age hippie from a New Mexico commune. My instinct is that such a person would not look like Diana Rigg, but everybody needs a dream girl.

With the strong start of Ash vs Evil Dead, attention now turns to the second episode to see if it delivers. With most of the action taking place in a morgue, Bruce Campbell is given the chance to show he still has it when it comes to slapstick comedy.
Ruby is back (Lucy Lawless) and has asked Ash (Bruce Campbell) for help. In the search for the Necronomicon he finds himself alone in the morgue looking for the book, while his father Brock (Lee Majors) has a date night at home.
In my review of the season opener I did hint at the morgue scene, and it is one that you do have to have a strong stomach for. The main comedy piece is something that you can see coming, and when you see it, it is as disgusting as you expect. The payoff after this scene is fitting as typically for Ash,...

The Lost Boys TV reboot lives again with The CW announcing that it has officially ordered a pilot for the show.
The Lost Boys TV series has been ruminating at The CW since 2016. Now the network has confirmed that it has officially ordered a pilot of the reboot of the popular '80s vampire film. Not too shabby for a group of long undead vampires.
Rob Thomas, who created Veronica Mars and iZombie, was originally set to be the showrunner, writer and executive producer through his Spondoolie Productions, along with Danielle Stokdyk, Dan Etheridge, Mike Karz and Bill Bindley. Thomas remains on the project as an executive producer but he also has a busy dance card with the Veronica Mars revival set to debut this year on Hulu. “Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire.” The CW is looking to tap into the fun and frightening concoction of Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys, as they are developing a TV series based on the beloved film.
Deadline broke the news about The Lost Boys TV series, which is being developed and written by Rob Thomas (iZombie, Veronica Mars) at The CW in conjunction with Gulfstream TV and Warner Bros Television.
According to Deadline, the series is being planned by Thomas as a massive seven-season story that would follow an immortal group of vampires (the Lost Boys) as they live through the triumphs and tribulations of each decade. Each season would be set in a new decade, with the debut season expected to take place in San Francisco circa 1967.

Taking public transportation on the bus in everyday life is essential for workers worldwide as we need to make that daily grinding trek to the workplace, shopping malls, school, doctor’s appointment or whatever our destination may be at the moment. In particular, there is a love/hate relationship with buses as it presents all sort of social challenges: anxiety, chattiness, impatience, friendliness, kindness, anti-socialism, invasive behavior, alienation, nervousness, sense of unity, etc.
Well in the world of movies the bus-related experience can be more colorful and adventurous for the imagination at heart. Thus, it brings up this prolonged thought: what is your favorite or memorable moments dealing with buses on the big screen? Does it compare adequately to the triumphs or tragedies that overshadow or downplay your dealings with real-life bus-related interaction?

Update August 14: Broadway will go dark: The marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in memory of Lauren Bacall on Friday, August 15, at exactly 7:45 p.m. for one minute.
One of the leading ladies of Hollywood’s Golden Age died today after a stroke. The sultry, fiery Lauren Bacall was 89. MSNBC’s Thomas Robert broke the news in a tweet, and the Bogart estate has confirmed it. She was famous for starring — onscreeen and off — with Humphrey Bogart in such 1940s classics as The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not, Dark Passage and Key Largo. In one of Hollywood’s great love stories, they married in 1945 and stayed together until his death in 1957. Four years later she married another acting legend, Jason Robards Jr.; they divorced in 1969.

Fans of Alfred Hitchcock movies will watch Brian De Palma’s Sisters and at the beginning notice that the music sounds a little like that out of Psycho. Then they’ll notice that the relationship between the two sisters is a little like Norman and his mother, before they are suddenly slapped in the face with a change in tone and suddenly it’s Rear Window. I guess you could say that De Palma was ripping off Hitchcock, it’s been said many times. In my view though this is of little importance when Sisters works so well. If you are going to take inspiration in your filmmaking from anywhere, why not copy off the master? Plenty of others have done so.

Brian De Palma is a director who seems to have lost his way with the more recent films of his. But to go back and see the beginnings of such a greatness is the quite the experience. Sisters is one of his earlier works, a Hitchcockian style horror/thriller and easily one of the best films I have seen from him. Watching the film now, I can feel the influences it has had, not sure how this missed my radar until now but I sure am glad I found it.

As a child my only real experience of Merlin was in Disney’s The Sword and the Stone, as a teenager it was in the Merlin TV mini-series starring Sam Neill, as an adult it looks like it’ll be at my local multiplex if Working Title have their way. The studio are reported to be developing a big screen adventure for the world famous Wizard, having picked up a pitch by author-screenwriter Jay Basu which brings Merlin forward to a modern day, contemporary setting.
Originating from the 12th Century Historia Regum Britanniae which itself is based on the far older Arthurian legend, Merlin is very possibly the oldest literary Wizard known to man and a character synonymous with all things mystical and magical. Originally more prophet than wizarding guardian to King Arthur, Merlin has entered popular culture in a way that only Robin Hood can compare with.

One of the big elements of the King Arthur/ Merlin mythology is that the legendary wizard ages backwards. He certainly seems to be nearly immortal in pop cultural terms, because he keeps popping up on TV shows, and in films every now again, most recently in the BBC series. Now Working Title thinks he could work his magic on the big screen once again, conjuring up a pitch from writer Jay Basu that gives the character a twist. Ready for this one? Merlin… In the modern world! Oh, don’t look like that! Yes, there aren’t that many versions of the character that tried work in a contemporary setting (the Heat Vision blog digs up the example of short-lived Sitcom Mr Merlin, which saw The Lost Boys’ Barnard Hughes as the wizard working as a mechanic in 1980s San Francisco), and the more recent, Merlin-influenced take on The Sorcerer...

A modern day Merlin is currently in the works from Working Title, based on a pitch from screenwriter Jay Basu. His current project is writing the adaptation of British crime novel Bad Traffic for producer Nick Wechsler.
As of right now, no amount of magic can gain information about this new project that is shrouded in secrecy. There have been a number of times that Merlin has ventured on-screen.
The character of Merlin stems from the legend of King Arthur. Without Merlin there would not be characters such as Albus Dumbledore, Gandalf or even Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Merlin typically appears in settings based in the mystical times of old England. When he has appeared in modern day settings, the outcomes have been very lackluster. The character of Merlin made a very brief appearance as the title character played by Bernard Hughes in Mr Merlin as an auto mechanic in 1981 San Francisco.

There are a lot of people who love the 80's.
Some of us actually grew up in the era of pastel blazers and sockless shoes while others are fascinated with the upbeat music and glossy film and television. Then there are those who think it's only kitsch and therefore really "cool" and "ironic" to be into something they considered silly and throwaway. I can't stand those people. And you know who you are. You are the ones who think people dressed really poorly back then, but you wear skinny jeans tucked into ankle boots (and you're a dude!). You are the ones who text during films at revival houses and laugh at stuff that isn't even funny just in...

Once upon a time, a long time ago (23 years, to be exact), there was a film called 'The Lost Boys.' It focused on this little town called Santa Clara, and the vampires who plagued it. Jason Patric's Michael followed his lust (to Jami Gertz) and found himself mixed up with the bloodsuckers, while mom started dating the secret head vampire. Corey Haim's Sam found some kiddie vamp hunters in the Frog Brothers on his quest to get rid of the menace, and Barnard Hughes' Grandpa turned out to be a lot less clueless than everyone thought. The film was a classic, busting past genre barriers and becoming one of the '80s must-see features.
But then the unthinkable happened: We got a lackluster 'Lost Boys: The Tribe' in 2008, have 'Lost Boys: The Thirst' coming out next month,...

As Twilight Eclipse prepares to swoop into cinemas, we look back at Joel Schumacher’s 80s vampire classic, The Lost Boys...
With the latest instalment of the Twilight Saga just around the corner, it’s time to remind ourselves of a classic vampire film that influenced many to come after. For me, the greatest alternative to Eclipse this summer is The Lost Boys.
Set in the fictional town of Santa Carla, the story follows two brothers who have recently moved to the sleepy seaside locale. Unbeknownst to them, however, it’s inundated with vampires. When the eldest brother Michael is attracted to a mysterious girl, she leads him to a group of vampires that want him to join them. When Michael starts showing signs of turning into a vampire, it is down to his younger brother Sam to figure out who the head vampire is in order to save him.

Winter is upon us in full swing and though I personally can not wait until the warmer seasons the Winter of late 2010 can not get here fast enough. Why you ask? Well come the end of this year, Disney releases Tron Legacy, the long awaited sequel to their 1982 cult hit Tron. There's little buzz amongst the general movie public about this film, but just like the recent smash success Avatar, I'm sure Disney's marketing strategy involves revealing more about the sequel bit by bit. I'm pretty sure that by this summer's end, it will be a greatly anticipated movie event among audiences. For die-hards like me, there is a wealth of information and even back-story to be found about the film's plot. (See for yourself and visit Flynn Lives.com.) The official synopsis reads:Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father...
