Frightfest pick The Invisible Raptor Photo: Frightfest
The line-up for this year's Glasgow Frightfest was announced this week. Opening with Josiah Allen and Indianna Bell's psychological mystery You'll Never Find Me, which sees a request for shelter on a dark and stormy night turn into something much more unsettling, it will close with Alan Scott Neal and Taylor Sardoni's tale of small town desperation, The Last Straw. Brazilian newcomer Tiago Teixeira delivers paranoid erotic in Custom and Ireland's Paul Duane explores the ethics of ethnology and the power of music in All You Need Is Death, one of the most talked-about horror films of the year to date.
Other highlights include Wake Up, an environmental slasher from Turbo Kid team Rkss, and Mike Hermosa’s joyously silly splatterfest The Invisible Raptor.

Ahead of the Jan 20 launch of Frightfest Saturday Scares With Alan Jones on Fast TV channel Nyx, Alan recounts his rise to journalistic prominence – from stealing shocker posters and partying with Abba to falling out with filmmakers and writing his upcoming autobiography.
Did you know from a young age that you wanted to be a journalist?
No, I loved horror and fantasy movies from the age of ten, or rather the idea of them because obviously I couldn’t go to the cinema and see anything of that nature. I read horror novels nonstop, stole shocker posters pasted up on the billboards at the end of my street, cut out all the wonderfully lurid adverts from newspapers and pasted them into scrapbooks. I was literally waiting for the moment I could pass for sixteen so I could get into X films and start watching all the movies I was desperate to catch up on.

The Frightfest Guide To Mad Doctor Movies
The Frightfest Guide To Mad Doctor Movies, by Dr. John Llewellyn Probert, Isbn-10 1913051323, Isbn-13 978-1913051327, Rrp £19.99
The Frightfest Guide to Mad Doctor Movies is the seventh in Fab Press' collection. Written by Dr. John Llewellyn Probert, whose professional expertise as a urologist, novelist and film writer further extends to his work with wife (and fellow author) Kate/Thana Niveau as lost film condensed version stage-recreators Teatro Proberto. If that seems quite a lot it's indicative of the feel of the book, which continually finds ways to add a little bit more.
There's a foreword by Frightfest architect Alan Jones, who's penned two of the Frightfest Guides himself. There's also a foreword by The Human Centipede's Tom Six. After the authorial introduction, those two forewords, Probert gives us a whistlestop tour around the somewhat plastic collection of Mad Doctor movies. This sometimes strays into Mad Scientist territory,...

An explanation of what this book is all about was provided in a press release (via Variety), “Drawn by the deep nostalgia of roaming video rental stores to find cool movies to watch by judging what its VHS box’s artwork would entice or beguile, filmmaker & artist Pat Tremblay has created a series of horror movie posters with the assistance of AI. He then proposed to talented individuals within the horror movie scene to write imaginary reviews for them. Scream Factory has announced that they will be bringing the 1981 slasher The Burning (watch it Here) to 4K Uhd this summer – on July 11th, to be exact – and they’re taking pre-orders at This Link. While supplies last, fans who order the 4K Uhd / Blu-ray set through the Scream Factory website will receive an exclusive 18” X 24” rolled poster featuring the original theatrical artwork. The price is $35.99.
The movie is a very cool slasher and I think Scream Factory has chosen an ideal release date for it, as it’s a great one to put on during the summer.
Directed by Tony Maylam, who also crafted the story with Bob Weinstein, Peter Lawrence, Brad Grey, and, unfortunately, Harvey Weinstein, The Burning has the following synopsis: At summer camp, some teenagers pull a prank on the camp’s caretaker, Cropsy. But the joke goes terribly wrong, and the teens leave Cropsy for...

The next slasher classic to get the 4K Ultra HD treatment is The Burning, with Scream Factory announcing today that the 1981 film hits 4K Uhd + Blu-ray on July 11, 2023.
In The Burning, “A group of summer camp pranksters get the scare of their lives when they target the camp’s creepy caretaker…and he takes bloody revenge!”
Feeling like a lost Friday the 13th movie, The Burning introduced the slasher icon known as Cropsy. The film is notable for featuring gore effects from the legendary Tom Savini.
Meagan Navarro wrote here on Bloody Disgusting a while back, “The Burning delivers in a satisfying way thanks to Tom Savini’s uncanny talent for gore.”
The film is also notable for featuring early appearances from actors Fisher Stevens, Holly Hunter, and Jason Alexander, who all became big stars in their own right.
Bonus Features include:

Irati
Irati was screened as part of the Frightfest strand at 2023's Glasgow Film Festival. It was originally scheduled for ten to four in the afternoon, but technical difficulties meant it couldn't be shown at that time. Instead, with no small measure of effort behind the scenes, it was shown at eleven o'clock that same evening. Frightfest screenings usually sell out near instantaneously. However porous the borders of horror are, its fans are tightly-knit in their support. That nightmare of exhibition was a happy accident for us at Eye For Film, as it meant that we were able to fit it into our schedule, and, equally luckily, fit ourselves into the cinema.

The Stendhal Syndrome, in particular, is one of the master’s most underrated features. Below is the full press release along with all the extra features on each disc. A very cool bunch of films indeed.
