The second weekend of Southend's horror festival was held at the White Bus Cinema last month and kicked off on the Saturday afternoon with 'Dark Awakening' (Dean C. Jones, 2014). This American thriller features a cute young couple with their photogenic little boy who move into deserted mansion in the countryside. Their en famille attempt to live in rural seclusion is marred by the fact the entire town appears to be inhabited by sinister old people who won't stop staring at them. Their little boy starts insisting there are imaginary friends around the place and draws creepy crayon pictures of them, when not investigating the deserted basement against his parents' orders. There's an entertaining backstory of the dad's previous career as a murdering child (pushing a child on a swing then sneaking up behind them with a pitchfork to stick in their back)....

Coleen Gray in 'The Sleeping City' with Richard Conte. Coleen Gray after Fox: B Westerns and films noirs (See previous post: “Coleen Gray Actress: From Red River to Film Noir 'Good Girls'.”) Regarding the demise of her Fox career (the year after her divorce from Rod Amateau), Coleen Gray would recall for Confessions of a Scream Queen author Matt Beckoff: I thought that was the end of the world and that I was a total failure. I was a mass of insecurity and depended on agents. … Whether it was an 'A' picture or a 'B' picture didn't bother me. It could be a Western movie, a sci-fi film. A job was a job. You did the best with the script that you had. Fox had dropped Gray at a time of dramatic upheavals in the American film industry: fast-dwindling box office receipts as a result of competition from television,...

Violent sorta-sequel Toolbox Murders 2 gets UK DVD release. This haunted-house movie, directed by makeup artist Dean Jones, is just a cheap assemblage of tired cliches, ignoble shock tactics and soap opera dialogue
There are scrappy, low-budget projects, and then there’s just plain cheap. Dark Awakening is bargain-bin cinema from the very first frame: its opening credits looking like a television movie from 25 years ago.
The plot feels even older. A man must return to the house in which he grew up – a spooky one riddled with ghouls in the cellar representing sublimated memories of unmotivated, uninspired and, importantly, not at all scary violent moments.

Jane Fonda: From ‘Vietnam Traitor’ to AFI Award and Screen Legend status (photo: Jason Bateman and Jane Fonda in ‘This Is Where I Leave You’) (See previous post: “Jane Fonda Movies: Anti-Establishment Heroine.”) Turner Classic Movies will also be showing the 2014 AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony honoring Jane Fonda, the former “Vietnam Traitor” and Barbarella-style sex kitten who has become a living American screen legend (and healthy-living guru). Believe it or not, Fonda, who still looks disarmingly great, will be turning 77 years old next December 21; she’s actually older than her father Henry Fonda was while playing Katharine Hepburn’s ailing husband in Mark Rydell’s On Golden Pond. Elaine Stritch wasn’t the star of Company, but she sure as hell made herself the star of its making-of documentary. Dean Jones and the rest of the actors be damned; the drama of her failure to master her big number, “The Ladies Who Lunch,” all but commandeers D.A. Pennebaker’s 1970 chronicle of the marathon recording sessions for the musical’s cast album. Muttering and grimacing, and looking in her bucket hat like a geezer at the end of a weeklong fishing trip, she keeps tripping over the notes and especially the feelings of the Stephen Sondheim showstopper, as if she were just learning it. Then, having begged for and been granted an expensive extra day to record, she returns all coiffed and made up and totally nails it. Presto, the film has its arc and its climax. She may not have done it on purpose, but that was Stritch...

Aliens’ Bishop is set to play a priest.
The eternally awesome Lance Henriksen, who has worked on some the biggest genre films of all time, will star in the supernatural/horror/thriller Nevermore.
According to THR, “The movie centers on a couple who experience paranormal activity involving dead children when they move to an estate in Massachusetts. Henriksen will play a parish priest whom the couple turn to, but the move is a mistake because the priest already knows all about resurrected children."
Of course he knows about the resurrected children. He’s Lance Henriksen. He probably resurrected those kids himself, for some kind of sick, satanic ritual.
Dean C. Jones, who worked on The Toolbox Murders, is writing and directing Nevermore. Jones also made Coffin Baby with Henriksen, watch the trailer below.

After watching this concept trailer for "Sunday Billy Sunday," you may think twice about going camping again. Shot by indie director Morna Ciraki, the footage draws frights from sexual and religious imagery. Ciraki enlisted Emmy-winning makeup artist Dean Jones, and stunt coordinators from "True Blood," to help her get the on-screen gore right and prove that Mark Wheaton's ebook would make a good horror film. Presumably the footage is being shopped around to investors before a feature film adaptation goes into production. The plot of Wheaton's book concerns a priest who gets...

The art of the glass shot or matte painting is one which originated very much in the early ‘teens’ of the silent era. Pioneer film maker, director, cameraman and visual effects inventor Norman Dawn is generally acknowledged as the father of the painted matte composite, with other visionary film makers such as Ferdinand Pinney Earle, Walter Hall and Walter Percy Day being heralded as making vast contributions to the trick process in the early 1920’s.
Boiled down, the matte process is one whereby a limited film set may be extended to whatever, or wherever the director’s imagination dictates with the employment of a matte artist. In it’s most pure form, the artist would set up a large plate of clear glass in front of the motion picture camera upon which he would carefully paint in new scenery an ornate period ceiling, snow capped mountains, a Gothic castle or even an alien world.

The Love Bug
Directed by Robert Stevenson
Written by Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi, based on the book Car, Boy, Girl by Gordon Buford
1968, USA, imdb
As I mentioned during the Mousterpiece Cinema podcast about The Love Bug, when I was a very young boy – about 3 or 4, my parents would drive to Ndg from the Laurentians to visit my grandparents. Once there, my Bompa would take me down to his basement garage, wave his hands, intone dramatically “Abracadabra” and the garage doors would open. Then he would wave his hands and proclaim “Abracadabra” to close them back up. I thought he was quite a magician… and he was! At least in the Arthur C. Clarke sense that, “Any sufficiently advanced technology,” in this case an automatic garage-door opener in 1970, “is indistinguishable from magic.”
This is the key to the Herbie films. Children see a sentient car and believe it to...

The continually busy actor Bill Oberst Jr. continues to blaze the horror trails and has most certainly kicked his acting career into overdrive.
Earlier this week Oberst wrapped on two horror projects he was shooting simultaneously (a cameo in J.R. McGarrity's feature film The Bloodlet and a lead in Thomas Mentel's dark short Overtime;) he starts a 14 day-shoot on Saturday in the lead role of The Asylum's new horror feature A Haunting In Salem, directed by Shane Van Dyke, and will go straight from wrap on Haunting into the lead role in director Drew Daywalt's Naked, co-starring Maria Olsen of Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Edin Gali of television's Mad Men.

Tobe Hooper’s remake of the 70′s slasher flick “The Toolbox Murders” is a guilty pleasure of mine. It’s not one I’m quick to recommend to very many people, especially since I’m still not entirely convinced it’s what many would describe as a “good movie”. However, that hasn’t dulled my interest in director Dean Jones’ upcoming follow-up “The Toolbox Murders 2″, which picks up immediately where the first installment left off. On-board for this gore-soaked outing are Bruce Dern, Lance Henriksen, Brian Krause, Jeffrey Combs, and Tony Todd, though it’s Dern’s character who seems to be front and center during the preview. As of this writing, there’s no word yet as to when this one will hit the proverbial streets. You can find the clip lurking below. via Shock Till You Drop function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.springboard.gorillanation.com...

Tbk: The Toolbox Murders 2 is not your typical sequel. The bloodthirsty Toolbox Killer is still slicing and dicing victims, but the follow-up to Tobe Hooper’s 2004 Toolbox Murders remake (see exclusive photos below) is an entirely different film, with new characters, a new storyline and a new director. Accomplished makeup-fx-artist-turned-director Dean Jones (pictured left) is determined to set a new standard with this sequel, utilizing a popular genre motif.

One of the better Tobe Hooper films in a decade was his remake of The Toolbox Murders. Violent, quick, easy-going, there’s was lots to like. Now, Styd is reporting that a sequel to his remake is currently filming with director Dean C. Jones. Sadly, Angela Bettis won’t return, and although sources are scarce on the plot, Shock thinks the story follows Bettis’ character’s sister as they exhume Coffin Baby’s tomb (played again by Christopher Doyle).
Since the remake’s debut in 2003, there’s been a few attempts at a sequel. Here’s hoping the film is a fun, gritty, bloody little slasher like the 1977 original and Hooper’s remake. More soon.
