If India ever had a star, it was Dev Anand. He was the mould in which subsequent generations of stars were cast. Dev Anand was born Dharamdev on September 26, 1923, in the Shakargarh tehsil of Gurdaspur district of Punjab. His father Pishori Lal Anand was a successful advocate and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Dev, the third of four brothers, graduated with English Honours from Government College, Lahore. He moved over to Bombay to join his older brother Chetan, who was trying to get a break in films.
Both brothers got involved in the progressive Indian People’s Theatre Association (Ipta). Chetan made ‘Neecha Nagar’ in 1946 and went on to win the Grand Prix at the inaugural Cannes film festival.

MollywoodIt is a testament to these actors’ caliber that their changeovers are not only received so well, but actively encouraged by fans of cinema. With that cracking loud voice of his, actor Janardhanan introduces himself – all too politely to the surprise of an audience unaccustomed to seeing him like that – as Ouseppachan, the miserable father-in-law of a woman found dead in the house. He is one of the suspects in the 1988 crime film Oru Cbi Diary Kuruppu. Up until then, Janardhanan had mostly played the unabashed villain in Malayalam films of the 70s and 80s. But for reasons best known to K Madhu, the director of Mammootty’s Cbi series, Janardhanan was cast as the harmless rich guy in the film, whose misfortunes somehow translated into comic relief for the audience. After this, the senior actor played comedian in movie after movie, one of his most loved sequences featuring in Mannar Mathai Speaking,...

When Alfred Hitchcock decided to shoot his parlor mystery-thriller Rope in what appeared to be one long, continuous take he unknowingly opened Pandora’s box. After Rope, filmmakers spanning the globe would copy the long take technique in hopes of capturing something resembling art. Today, it exists mostly in two forms: the elongated action sequence, which is supposed to capture gritty realism and the back and forth rhythm of a fight, and the long take masquerading as an entire movie, like in Rope. The problem with this, however, is that Rope is closer to an interesting failure than a document of great filmmaking innovation. The long take mostly exists as a crutch to hide the weaknesses of filmmakers among viewers who think it must be great because it’s loud. Enter director Ivan Ayr’s Soni, the new Indian film out of the Venice Film Festival that attempts and fails...

Two policewomen in New Delhi rub up against sexual harassment, gender expectations, and the exhaustion of the job’s constant pressures in Ivan Ayr’s understated gem of a debut, “Soni.” With an intelligent, subtle script and camerawork so organically natural one doesn’t immediately realize that each scene is shot in one take, the film draws on a subject much in the news and spins it into a multilayered yet low-key study without preaching or sensationalizing. When indie Indian films make a splash away from home they tend to be sentimental feel-good dramedies; with the right marketing, “Soni” could break the pattern and become an international art-house sleeper.
