After the death of Lon Chaney, he was one of the actors originally considered for the title role in Dracula (1931). The role finally went to the actor playing the role on stage, Bela Lugosi.
He played the Comte de Rochefort in both The Three Musketeers (1935) and The Three Musketeers (1948).
Appeared in five Cecil B. DeMille films: The Sign of the Cross (1932), Cleopatra (1934), The Crusades (1935), The Buccaneer (1938), and The Ten Commandments (1956). The second and the fifth were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
