The Story: In a dystopian, ultra-futuristic 2017 (!) the population is kept under control by a strict one child per couple rule. With abortion now illegal, parents who violate this rule are imprisoned for life, while their children become the property of the Men-Tel Corporation. Enter John (Christopher Lambert) and Karen (Loryn Locklin) Brennick, whose first child died and are now pregnant with their second. Caught at the border as they try to escape into Canada, the two are sent to an underground super-max prison run by the genetically altered Poe (Kurtwood Smith), who has designs on Karen, while John plots an escape.
The Players: Starring: Christopher Lambert, Loryn Locklin, Kurtwood Smith, Clifton Collins, Jr., Vernon Wells, Lincoln Kilpatrick, and Jeffrey Combs. Directed by Stuart Gordon.
“…it was Arnold Schwarzenegger that got me the job and it was because of Re-Animator. We used Arnold’s body-double in Re-Animator. The first reanimated corpse...

For all the talk about the pioneering CGI in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," there's just as much practical wizardry worth celebrating. James Cameron's 1991 action touchstone is full of actual stunts and practical visual effects which alongside its genuinely innovative computer-aided effects have allowed the film to endure for decades. These days you'll hear directors talk about how CGI should be used to compliment whatever you can shoot in-camera, but that seems a rarely followed philosophy in 2022. Back in 1991, however, directors had no choice but to follow it, and Cameron did an exceptional job doing just that with "T2."
From the chase scene that involved jumping an actual truck into an LA drainage canal, to filming in miniature an entire nuclear blast that wipes out the city, "T2" comprised multiple practical effects and stunts that felt more real than ever CGI could. As Cameron, who seems far too happy to die for his own work,...

There have been plenty of difficult directors over the years, from Hitchcock pelting Tippi Hedren with live avians in "The Birds" to Kubrick and his hundreds of takes on "The Shining." Sam Peckinpah infuriated Charlton Heston so much that the actor brandished a saber at him, while William Friedkin fired real guns on the set of "The Exorcist" to keep his actors suitably on edge. Few modern filmmakers, however, have the tyrannical reputation of James Cameron, self-proclaimed King of the World.
A notorious egomaniac and fierce taskmaster, Cameron may just have the biggest balls in Hollywood. Who else would make a blockbuster about the Titanic so he could explore the actual wreck site? The stories of hardship on his movie sets are the stuff of cinema legend, from threatening, to firing crew members for taking bathroom breaks, to nailing their cellphones to the wall if they ring during a take.

Frightmare! The premier horror convention in the Southwest has come again, and it was a riot. Well, not literally. Thankfully, massive improvements were made this year with line management of the more popular guests and parking so even when things were hot and heavy on Saturday, we never reached the critical mass found last year.
The movie and television guests were a literal who's who of icons throughout the years. The three guests of honor, Linda Blair, George A Romero, and Tobin Bell, were all busy with fans at their tables all weekend. I heard that Bell went till 1am signing on Saturday to make sure everyone was taken card of.
Having tables set up near empty walls for attendees to line up against and usage of tickets when lines got too long were big improvements. With the three guests of honor and other fan favorites such as Scott Wilson...

The Canadian Parliament is a lot like DeGrassi High; everything looks kinda familiar, but still not quite right. During a recent "question period," our neighbors to the north gave our own embattled Us Congress a lesson in what incivility is all aboot when Member of Parliament Justin Trudeau called Environment Minister Peter Kent a "piece of sh*t" on the floor of the House of Commons.
