As recounted in Donald H. Clarke's article "A Real Life Drama" which appeared in the Apr/30/1922 Washington Evening Star, Winifred Kimball was the winner of the $10,000 first prize in Goldwyn's motion picture scenario contest. Her script, "Broken Chains" beat out 37,000 other entries.
Carrie Winifred Kimball was born about 1872 in Wisconsin. By the time of the contest she was living in Apalachicola, Florida, with her sister. According to Clarke's article, Kimball's father and brother-in-law had both recently died by suicide. But records show her father had died in 1902.
