Chicago – When meeting an interview subject for the third time, and remembering him as the first professional interview I ever did, results in a comfortable familiarity. Director Ira Sachs is the subject, and his latest film is “Little Men.” Taking on adolescent friendship, adult passive-aggressiveness and gentrification all in one film, it also spotlights the expansiveness of this talented filmmaker.
“Little Men” features Greg Kinnear in one of his best performances, as a guilty and conflicted property inheritor named Brian who now lives in Brooklyn, in the midst of the hottest real estate markets in America. His late father owned the property, which included a dressmaker’s shop run by Leonor (Paulina García), who cared for her landlord more than his heirs. Meanwhile, Brian’s son Jake (Theo Taplitz), has found a friend and fellow traveler in Tony (Michael Barbieri), who happens to be Leonor’s son. Property, negotiations and...

The mighty Paddy Considine has signed up for a role in Peaky Blinders series 3, which starts shooting today…
He’s currently on the big screen in the utterly disparate films Macbeth and Miss You Already, and now Paddy Considine has added another project to his slate – he’ll appear in Peaky Blinders series 3, which begins shooting today.
Mr Considine will play “the representative of a force beyond anything Shelby has previously encountered.” Dina Korzun (Last Resort) and Jan Bijvoet (Cordon) have also joined the show, as refugees from a foreign conflict who enlist the help of Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby.
The new series will kick off with Tommy’s wedding day, before plunging its protagonist back into “the glamorous and dangerous world of international intrigue in 1920s Britain, putting his entire organisation and family at risk, and forcing him to question everything about his own ambitions and desires.”

With the third series kicking off production this week, Peaky Blinders creator Stephen Knight hasn’t finished causing problems for Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby. Paddy Considine has come aboard to show to play someone who will be a serious thorn in his side.According to Knight, who talked to Deadline, the new series will find Tommy expanding his crime syndicate internationally, which brings with it new challenges and threats. Among the other new additions are Dina Korzun and Jan Bijvoet, who play refugees who desperately need Tommy’s help. “I am genuinely thrilled at the prospect of Season Three. I think it will be the best yet,” Knight says. “Lots of things familiar, but lots of things are new. It’s still a Birmingham story and it always will be. Now, it has international consequences. I can’t wait to see it myself.” And in case you were wondering,...

Married Life: Sachs’ Latest a Subtle Portrayal of Love, Marriage, and Familial Bonds
Following on the heels of his 2012 film, Keep the Lights On, which documented a rather tumultuous and sometimes toxic relationship between two gay men over the course of a decade, director Ira Sachs delivers what is perhaps his most heartfelt and warmly observed film thus far. While many of the central relationships depicted in Sachs’ works are marked by melancholy and discord, whether that be the arresting loneliness of the superb Dina Korzun in Forty Shades of Blue (2005) or the dark comedy underpinning the extra-marital affair in Married Life (2007), here with Love is Strange, we are graced with a couple played by John Lithgow and Alfred Molina, partners of nearly forty years that have finally taken it upon themselves to exchange overdue marriage vows.

Craig here with the last in the current series of Take Three. Today: Paddy Considine
Take One: Dead-end England, twice
"Phil" in My Summer...Colin Firth, Daniel Craig, Colin Farrell, Clive Owen. And so on. When I think of an actor who encapsulates exactly what is crucial, surprising and truly versatile about British male acting right now, none of the above quite pass muster, for me. Paddy Considine, on the other hand, hits the mark. His two roles for director Pawel Pawlikowski – kindly arcade manager Alfie in Last Resort (2001) and Jesus freak Phil in My Summer of Love (2004) – couldn’t be any different from one another, yet both cover all the above attributes. Watch the two films back to back and tell me Considine shouldn’t be up for every great role an actor of his range and calibre could be suggested for right now. Then ask me why he...

Much has been written about the human soul, what makes it so special and unique. How some souls can be twisted or damaged or how they could be sold to the Devil. It has been the inspiration for poetry, prose, and much philosophical thought. But the very idea that it is too heavy to carry around and therefore could be stored to lighten the burden…well, that’s unusual.
It’s the very premise of the little film Cold Souls , which was written and directed by Sophie Barthes. The movie opened to fairly positive reviews last year but was largely overlooked despite the strong cast and intriguing premise. A work of sophisticated science fiction, it’s also a dark comedy in some ways. The film was released this month on DVD from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

The long shadow of neurotics past hangs heavy over Cold Souls, the debut feature effort from writer-director Sophie Barthes. In particular, one can see the lingering influence of both Woody Allen and Charlie Kaufman, as the film’s screenplay tries to meld together the distinctly whiny, self-loathing, and socially ill-adjusted sensibilities of both those writers. To be fair, while both Allen and Kaufman have spent their careers hiring surrogates to personify their personal issues on film, neither one of them ever found one quite as effective or personable as Paul Giamatti, who portrays an actor named Paul Giamatti (but still not himself, which is one of the film’s less successful tropes). It is tribute to his presence as an actor that the film retains the charm that it does, and is able to pull off some of its more half-baked ideas.

They all say this show changed a little bit, but we guess it was expected for the 25th annual ceremony from Stapless Center, or if you prefer – the Spirit Awards.
Last week we were all occupied with Oscar, but it’s always the right time to take a look at (maybe) less popular ceremony, but still – the good one! We’re going to remind you of this ceremony highlights.
The Spirits, run by the nonprofit Film Independent, threw in some of its typically enjoyable ironic touches.
One of them was definitely David Spade who presented the best foreign award, starting with:
“You may not know this, but my movies play in other countries. They’re huge in Poland. I can’t set foot in Bulgaria.” Thanks for letting us know Spade!
On the other hand, we had a chance to see Ben Stiller, known for studio comedies more than any boutique film,...

While clearly not as closely followed as the Guild Awards, let alone the Golden Globes, the Independent Spirit Awards casts a much wider net in terms of nominees by accepting any film that is screened at various festivals, even if it's not released in theatres. It does, however, limit the film's budget to $20 million.

Last night the 25th Film Independent Spirit Awards at La Live's panoramic event deck in downtown Los Angeles and talk about predictable as I nailed 12 of the 13 winners in the categories I predicted, with Precious being the night's biggest winner taking home Best Feature, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress and First Screenplay. The only category I missed was Best First Feature, which I predicted Oren Moverman's The Messenger would take home the award, but instead it went to Scott Cooper's Crazy Heart, which also won for Best Actor, awarding Jeff Bridges on his way to an Oscar win this Sunday.
I have listed all the winners below, see you Sunday for the Oscars.

The Spirit Awards are nearly upon us. I will live blog haphazardly tonight whilst cleaning my apartment and fine tuning Oscar Party Plans. In the meantime, while you wait for the festivities to begin, I thought you should hear from a Spirit voter. So I'll let him take it from here. Hello everybody! Michael B here, writing my first (and hopefully not last) guest post. Let me tell you a few things about myself before I begin. I’m 19 years old, from Los Angeles, but reside in New York City during the fall and spring. I attend Nyu and major in Dramatic Writing, or also known as, Film, Play and Television Writing. I’m a huge Oscar buff—I live five blocks away from the Academy Building—and have been an avid reader and “chatty moviegoer” at The Film Experience for over five years. And I do too love the actresses.

Film Independent's Spirit Awards marked their 25th anniversary this year and shook things up by trading their afternoon beachside luncheon for a nighttime party downtown. The show was hosted by comedian Eddie Izzard and a handful of the actors who attended and presented were Jeremy Renner ("The Hurt Locker"), Maggie Gyllenhaal ("Crazy Heart"), Carey Mulligan ("An Education") and Vera Farmiga ("Up in the Air"). Best Actor winner Jeff Bridges performed a song from his film "Crazy Heart" with Oscar-nominated songwriters T Bone Burnett and Ryan Bingham. The rock band Anvil whose career was chronicled in the independent film "Anvil: The Story of Anvil" also performed live and took home Best Documentary.

Cold Souls
Directed by: Sophie Barthes
Cast: Paul Giamatti, Dina Korzun, Emily Watson, David Straithairn
Running Time: 1 hr 40 min
Rating: PG-13
Due Out: March 2, 2010
Plot: Paul Giamatti (Giamatti) is getting a little too depressed after playing Uncle Vanya, so he decides to de-soul for a little while. Unfortunately, his soul goes missing in the process and he becomes embroiled in the world of Russian soul traffickers.
Who’S It For? Fans of quirky films like Being John Malkevich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Movie:
The preview looked great but I found Cold Souls a little disappointing. Despite a really original premise and the prospect of Paul Giamatti playing himself, the film feels a little, um, soulless. Barthes never finds a way to visually convey the effects of soullessness, though Giamatti does his best to show what having a soul versus not having one or having one belonging to another person means,...

Cold Souls Written and Directed by: Sophie Barthes Starring: Paul Giamatti, Dina Korzun, Emily Watson, David Strathairn, Katheryn Winnick, Lauren Ambrose What is a soul, and how does this soul define us as human beings? That is the central question in the low-budget film Cold Souls, written and directed by Sophie Barthes. The film stars Paul Giamatti (part of the Oscar Snub Club with Sam Rockwell) as, erm, Paul Giamatti who is in the midst of rehearsals for the Chekov play Vanya. Feeling overwhelmed, overburdened, and unable to work, he is looking for any solution to help this problem. He finds it in an article in The New Yorker, which tells of a place that removes the soul from a person. Intrigued, Paul visits the company, which is run by Dr. Flintstein (David Strathairn), who tells him that a person’s soul is not just an abstract idea as originally...

"Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" has come out as one of the nominations leaders at 2010 Independent Spirit Awards. The drama film, which sees Mariah Carey as a social worker, was on Tuesday, December 1 announced to be collecting five nods from the awards honoring independent filmmakers, and thus shared similar number with another drama "The Last Station".

The Spirit Awards are coming! In 95 days. The nominees have a long time to decide which pair of jeans or casual designer wear would best suit the event. Though the Spirits have traditionally passed out their ever-so-slightly off mainstream prizes the day before the Oscars this year they’re moving to a Friday night situation on March 5th. All the better for partying? Still time to use those hangover cures before the Oscars on Sunday.

Although the nominees for the Academy Awards won't be announced until sometime next year, a few of the other award ceremonies are already in full swing including the Independent Spirit Awards, which recognize the best films shot for $20 million or less. This year's Spirit Award nominees were announced earlier today, and I think there are definitely some interesting choices. First off, the big one that everyone is picking up on is the fact that Paranormal Activity was nominated for Best First Feature. And why shouldn't it be? The Blair Witch Project won the exact same award back in 2000. Anvil! The Story of Anvil has been redeemed somewhat for the Oscar snub by getting a nod here for Best Documentary, and surprisingly, Jemaine Clement picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Gentlemen Broncos. Other than that, some of the movies that scored multiple nominations include Precious, (500) Days of Summer,...

The 2009 Independent Spirit Nominations were handed out today, and we're duty bound to report them so that you can visualize all the great movies that aren't playing at your local multiplex in Sheboygan. Actually, I don't know what is says about the industry, but some of the choices seem somewhat obscure by even my own indie-friendly tastes. There were a few really great indies this year, but there wasn't a lot of depth, which means it's roughly the same five films nominated for everything, and only three of them got any sort of real exposure outside of NY/La. But then again, that's what awards like these are for: To highlight films that we're missing. I have some favorites, but I'll keep my mouth shut and just present the nominees. My guess is that, besides Precious, a screenplay nod for (500) Days and an acting nod for Jeff Bridges, you won't...

Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire and The Last Station led the nominations for the 2010 Independent Spirit Awards with five each.
Both were nominated for best feature along with (500) Days of Summer, Amreeka, and Sin Nombre.
If you’re wondering where indie favorite and Oscar hopeful The Hurt Locker is, the movie was submitted for consideration last year and was no eligible for this year’s list. Though Kathryn Bigelow picked up “Best Feature” for the film at the Gotham Independent Film Awards last night.
As far as I know, Duncan Jones’ Moon is considered a British film and was correctly included in the British Indie Film nominees with several other solid picks (though I didn’t care for Fish Tank).
I was glad to see Anvil! included in the documentaries after it was left off the Oscar short list — though where’s The Cove? — plus love for 500 Days and Adventureland,...

"The Last Station," which looks at Russian author Leo Tolstoy's final days, and "Precious," the portrait of a troubled inner-city teenager, led the 2010 Spirit Award nominations, with five each.
Both movies were nominated Tuesday morning for best feature along with "(500) Days of Summer," "Amreeka" and "Sin Nombre."
The Coen brothers' "A Serious Man" was awarded the group's Robert Altman Award, which goes to the film's cast and its casting director. And the indie horror hit "Paranormal Activity" even made an appearance with a nomination as best first feature.
"The Hurt Locker," one of the higher-profile indie films of the year, did not figure in the nominations, since the Spirit Awards nominated it in two categories last year.
Among distributors, Fox Searchlight and Sony Pictures Classics led the parade with seven nominations each.
Presented by the indie film organization Film Independent, the Spirit Awards, celebrating their 25th anniversary, will be handed out March 5 at L.

Chicago – How is the best way to discover the elusiveness of the soul? For Paul Giamatti, playing himself, the key is to store the legendary organ into the deep freeze, in his new absurdist comedy, “Cold Souls.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0 In what has to be one of the great challenges of naturalistic acting, Giamatti plays a character named Paul Giamatti, frantically trying to channel the depths of his new stage role as Anton Chekov’s “Uncle Vanya.”
Perplexed by the evasive character of the melancholy physician, Giamatti seeks a way to plumb a new sensibility out of a performance he can’t quite grasp. The chance encounter with an ad in a magazine discovers a clinic that can actually remove a person’s soul.
’Cold Souls’ has a limited release on August 21, 2009, and features Paul Giamatti, Emily Watson, David Strathairn, Dina Korzun and Lauren Ambrose, and is written/directed by Sophie Barthes.

Though Charlie Kaufman has only written a handful of films — including Being John Malkovich and Synecdoche, New York — he has already earned his own adjective: Kaufmanesque. Normally, that honor is reserved for prolific, aged artists like Federico Fellini and Franz Kafka, but Kaufman has already established his own postmodern, mind-plumbing style with a small number of credits to his name. With Cold Souls, newcomer Sophie Barthes has made a quirky, Kaufmanesque comedy, but her film still manages to feel like something new.
Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti (John Adams) stars as himself, or at least, a version of himself. This Paul Giamatti is starring in a Manhattan theatrical production of Uncle Vanya, but the normally inspired actor is struggling with playing the self-pitying title character. His director isn't happy with his performance, but more importantly, Paul finds himself overcome with Vanya's feelings of despair and inertia.

In the wonderfully odd "Cold Souls," Paul Giamatti plays Paul Giamatti, a noted actor who's floundering in rehearsals for an upcoming production of "Uncle Vanya," the Chekhov play. Paul feels weighed down, heavy, obscurely unhappy — rather like the play's title character. It's really getting to him. One night, paging through The New Yorker, he comes upon a story about a new fashion, and the company that caters to it: Soul Storage. He finds their ad in the phone book, and it speaks to him: "Is your soul weighing you down?" He notes the address.
The company's offices are sleek, bland, appropriately soulless. The director, a slick Dr. Flintstein (David Strathairn), comes right to the point: After Paul's soul is "disembodied," he can store it in a cryogenic locker there on the premises or, if he prefers...

In Cold Souls, Paul Giamatti plays Paul Giamatti, well-known New York actor of screen and stage who’s in rehearsals for the lead role in Chekov play Uncle Vanya. Whether it’s the weight of starring in a Russian classic or the more generalized lethargy of middle age, Giamatti seems lately to feel the burden of his soul.

Is your soul weighing you down? Paul Giamatti has found a solution! In the surreal comedy Cold Souls, Paul Giamatti plays an actor named… Paul Giamatti. Stumbling upon an article in The New Yorker about a high-tech company that extracts, deep-freezes and stores people’s souls, Paul very well might have found the key to happiness for which he’s been searching. But, complications arise when he is the unfortunate victim of "soul-trafficking." Giamatti’s journey takes him all the way to Russia in hopes of retrieving his stolen soul from an ambitious but talentless soap-opera actress. Balancing a tightrope between deadpan humor & pathos, and reality & fantasy, Cold Souls is a true soul searching comedy. Also starring David Strathairn, Dina Korzun and Emily Watson.

There has been much discussion on the debut film by Sophie Barthes, Cold Souls. There is the inevitable comparison to Charlie Kaufman and the trailer is definitely reminiscent of Being John Malkovich. But I think this film deserves a chance to be seen and word has been very positive so far. I Heart Huckabees this is not (and thank God!!). The film is a metaphysical satire about America’s obscene consumerist culture. In an alternate world human Souls can be extracted and traded as commodities. Paul Giamatti (playing a version of himself) tries the procedure on for size to get into a soulless character for the stage. When the plan backfires he learns his soul has been stolen and sold in the black market in Russia. Post modern humor ensues. Also staring Emily Watson, Lauren Ambrose, Dina Korzun, and David Stratharin.

The Samuel Goldwyn Company has released the first trailer for one of their Sundance pickups, the Sophie Barthes directed Cold Souls today. It stars Paul Giamatti as himself, an actor living in New York trying to get a grip on an upcoming off-Broadway role. In doing so, he comes across a high-class 'soul removal' service led by a rather sketchy, but oddly comforting doctor, played by David Strathairn. After having his soul removed, Paul soon realizes that things just aren't the same -- and he needs it back. Unfortunately it has already been taken by a Russian soul trafficker named Nina (Dina Korzun). Now he must travel, soulless, across the world to get back the soul that is rightfully his. This was one of the better films that I reviewed at Sundance this past year, and I'm sticking to my initial assessment that this is a visually impressive work from Barthes, flanked...

- While no film in my 30 film viewing left me in awe or speechless, this year's Sundance film festival was perhaps the best in terms of good versus bad ratio. As I had pointed out in my final dinner convo with Alex from firstshowing.net before leaving Park City, the cherry on the sundae was indeed Sophie Barthes' debut (see my opening night preem coverage here) - I will have more to say in my upcoming full length interview and review. Not surprinsingly, I wasn't the only one that was impressed. Late yesterday, Samuel Goldwyn announced the theatrical rights pick up to Barthes' Cold Souls and the company is looking to release the picture in a late summer slot. Judging by their current slate, the company that traditional releases between 8 to 10 features will put in the necessary efforts to make sure that this one has a great theatrical run.

A smart but loony plot about actor Paul Giamatti, who has his soul extracted in order to give a better performance in Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" and then fights to get it back, invites quick comparisons to the recent Charlie Kaufman comedy "Synecdoche, New York," or any Kaufman story for that matter. "Cold Souls," the debut film of writer/director Sophie Barthes, is as much a brainteaser as "Synecdoche." After all Giamatti plays a hilarious, exaggerated version of himself. Yet with a standout cast featuring David Strathairn, Emily Watson and Dina Korzun, "Cold Souls" is noticeably sweeter than Kaufman's comedies. It's also more straightforward, a crowd pleasing, funny look at technology used to goofball effect, think Woody Allen's "Sleeper" without the non-stop slapstick.
