Animator Earl Kress, who died in September, was also honoured with the award. "Dwayne McDuffie was a talented writer and creator of comics and animation who worked hard for others, particularly for minority writers. Chicago – As far as kiddie tearjerkers go, “The Fox and the Hound” is one of Disney’s finest. It’s not a great film, and certainly not in the same league as the watershed game-changers that came before or the renaissance masterworks that followed. But it is a tender and bittersweet fable with a message of refreshing complexity. At its heart is a friendship that society has deemed unsustainable, and the film doesn’t shy away from its troubling repercussions.
Based on the novel by Daniel Mannix, this 1981 effort functioned as a crucial turning point in the history of Disney studios, when veteran animators like Wolfgang Reitherman were replaced by a slate of new talent including Ron Clements and John Musker (future co-directors of “The Little Mermaid”). Creative differences intensified between the old guard and the rookies, many of whom found the project to be distressingly bland. This caused the...

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

The never-ending rivalry between Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse has been featured in hundreds of cartoons -- both on the big-screen and in TV shows like The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show, The Tom and Jerry Show, Tom and Jerry Tales, and Tom and Jerry Kids.
For the first time, the duo are being featured in a direct-to-video film produced by Warner Bros. Though creators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera have both passed away, the movie was written by animation expert and author Earl Kress.
Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes finds the cat and mouse duo teaming up with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to solve a string of jewel heists around London. Tuffy, Butch, Droopy and many other familiar friends round out the cast of characters. They're voiced by Michael York, Malcolm McDowell, John Rhys-Davies, Grey DeLisle, Jeff Bergman, Phil...

#235 (Vol. 2 #7): The Chief And The King
When I was a child I enjoyed all sorts of animated cartoon series I saw on television, perhaps more or less equally. But as an adult, watching these cartoons again, I discovered that some, notably Warner Bros.’ Looney Tunes grew in my estimation, while others, notably the Hanna-Barbera television cartoons of the late 50s through the 1960s, dropped considerably. I still find the early Hanna-Barbera characters–Yogi Bear, et al.–appealing, thanks to their visual design, primarily by the late animator Ed Benedict, and especially the great voice acting by Daws Butler and his colleagues. But while I can name numerous Warners cartoons whose direction and writing make them great and classic–What’s Opera, Doc?, One Froggy Evening, and on and on–are there individual Hanna-Barbera TV cartoons from the 50s and 60s that are anywhere near that league?
That’s why...

IATSE Local 839, Hollywood's Animation Guild, has re-elected several incumbents including president Kevin Koch and business representative Steve Hulett. Also re-elected to three-year terms at the Tuesday membership meeting were recording secretary Jeff Massic and sergeant-at-arms Jan Browning. There was no contest in any of the races so the membership unanimously voted to skip the secret ballot election process. In addition to several newly elected or re-elected board members, executive board member Earl Kress was tapped to replace retiring vp Kathleen O'Mara-Svetlik. The union represents about 1,800 animators in Southern California.
