I still have fond memories of gathering around the TV with my family on Sunday nights to watch Veena Sud's captivating TV series The Killing (based on Forbrydelsen by Søren Sveistrup), so I'm especially thrilled that Veena's 2020 Quibi series The Stranger (starring Maika Monroe as a rideshare driver who encounters a killer client played by Dane DeHaan) has been recut and re-released as a feature film that's now streaming on Hulu!
Daily Dead had the pleasure of catching up with Veena in a new video interview to discuss the unique multi-year journey of this new version of The Stranger, including the importance of co-owning the copyright to the project, restructuring The Stranger as a feature film, and working with Maika Monroe, Dane DeHaan, Avan Jogia, and their canine co-star Preston!

Veena Sud's 2010s TV series The Killing (based on Forbrydelsen by Søren Sveistrup) is still one of the most enthralling viewing experiences I've ever had, so I'm especially thrilled that Veena's 2020 Quibi series The Stranger (starring Maika Monroe as a rideshare driver who encounters a killer client plalyed by Dane DeHaan) has been re-cut as a feature film that will arrive on Hulu on April 15th:

Doin’ It revolves around surely the most literal interpretation imaginable of the old saying “those who can, do; those who can’t, teach.” Lilly Singh stars as Maya, who stumbles almost by accident into a job teaching sex ed, despite still being a virgin. As she schools her kids on everything from consent to gender identity to orgasms, Maya sets out to unlearn the shame that she herself internalized at that age — and maybe even to get laid for the first time.
Good intentions practically drip off the premise, which makes a convincing case for dismantling the fear and ignorance around adolescent sex ed. And Doin’ It puts its money where its mouth is — its jokes eschew pearl-clutching or coyness in favor of in-your-face crassness. But the comedy never quite settles into a comfortable rhythm, and eventually backs itself into a corner so far away from any recognizable reality that...

Sex is a lot like filmmaking. You dive in when you’re ready, trust your companions, and learn from experience. Few people start out as experts, but there’s beauty in being allowed to try and fail in different environments over the years.
In her first feature film lead, comedian and former late night host Lilly Singh plays Maya, a computer engineer who takes a part-time job teaching sex education. After an incident in her teens led to her mother moving them back to India, Maya not only repressed her sexuality but grew to actively fear it — and now she’s teaching teens about sex despite having never done it herself. Singh, Neel Patel, and director Sara Zandieh co-wrote the film, which premiered at SXSW on March 12.
Sonia Dhillon Tully plays Maya’s hyperconservative single mother Veena, a role that has unfortunately been tread and retread in the South Asian-American film ouevre.

One of the defining features of toy line-oriented franchise is that there is no shortage of visually appealing characters. A vast number of behavioral archetypes and appearance combinations ensure a steady supply of characters, targeted to bolster sales numbers while ignoring the quality of the writing behind them. Similarly, one of Mattel’s most popular toy line IPs, Masters of the Universe set in the fantasy-adventure genre, boasts a significant number of key figures which have gone through little to no change since their first appearance during the 80s.
With the advent of Ott, a number of franchises have received a new opportunity to unlock their potential, and Netflix’s Masters of the Universe, released in 2021, proved the storytelling prospects of He-Man lore when makers aren’t afraid to take risks. Despite being hit with seemingly divisive reactions, the series served its purpose of rejuvenating the fandom, and as a result,...

We have Indian Match Making, a reality television show on Netflix that markets marriage as an institution everyone should aspire to be in. This show was primarily made to point out the mindset of the Indians in their country and the diaspora living abroad, desperately wanting to be in touch with their culture and legacy. It paints only the happy picture of two families coming together in the name of holy matrimony. Then we have Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti’s Made in Heaven, which shows the ugly face of weddings and subsequent marriages. The show is as real as it gets. These are two opposite ends of the spectrums about one institution based on which the society of our country thrives.
Tanuja Chandra’s latest documentary, Wedding.Con, produced along with BBC India, talks about the horrors of marriages that are being initiated via matrimonial websites. Women are conned...

There have been countless documentaries, television shows, and movies made about serial killers, highlighting the fact that fiction or nonfiction stories on this subject need to be told. Por Thozhil, which means the art of war, seems like a war waged by the police upon a serial killer who is on the loose, and there could be only one winner here. Through this article let us understand the investigation process and how the police officers finally got hold of the culprit.
Spoilers Ahead
Killings In Trichy
Por Thozhil is set in Trichy in 2010, where two patrolling police officers find the dead body of a woman who has been strangled, and with rope having been used to gag her mouth and tie her hands and legs together. The killer carried out a long process to kill the victim. Initial investigation reveals another woman was killed the same way, which means a...

ReviewVignesh Raja’s Por Thozhil does come with a ‘message’ for the audience, but it isn’t spelt out in neon. It’s subtle and allows us to arrive at the realisation instead of drilling it into our brains.Screengrab: YouTube / Think Music IndiaThe serial killer genre is saturated with films and web series delving into the psyche of a person who takes the lives of the innocent seemingly at random. By now, the audience that has a liking towards such films (such as this reviewer) is educated enough about why such crimes take place and how the criminal is eventually caught. To make an investigative thriller that has you holding your breath for a good part of the film is therefore quite an accomplishment – and it’s especially impressive when it comes from a debut filmmaker. Of late, there’s been a trend where cameras are being replaced as mediums of video capture, and in their stead, we’re using the latest communication techniques to film an entire movie. Starting with the 2020 horror film Host, where a Zoom call among friends goes horribly wrong, the arrival of communication technology has opened doors to several movies where stories are told through webcams and similar recording devices. These movies are the next generation in the found footage genre, and if made properly, some of them can be very impressive. Nicholas D. Johnson’s mystery thriller Missing is told entirely through the webcam and similar devices of the protagonist, June Allen (Storm Reid), capturing all her emotions when her mother, Grace, goes missing. Let’s look at June’s character and analyze how she realizes how deep her mother’s love truly was for her, despite all their arguments and fights.

Death is a tricky yet sensitive subject to deal with. But Venu Yeldandi, in his directorial debut, ‘Balagam,’ has greatly amalgamated superstitions associated with crows in relation to death to narrate a sad family tale. When you observe a crow cawing right at the beginning of the movie above Koamrayya’s head, you know for sure that death awaits. Venu quite efficiently uses death as the reason for a dissociated family to reconnect and revive their ties. He employs the crow as the messenger of Yamraj, the Hindu deity of death, to resolve family issues, bringing about harmony and unity and breaking the odd drama of egos.
‘Balagam’ gives us a moment to stop and enjoy the beauty of a rhythmic village, which perhaps today would be impossible to treat ourselves to. The film starts with a song that introduces us to the village and its peculiar nature of being a mother and daughter,...

ReviewThe film featuring Antony Varghese begins on a comfortable note, but slips into uncertain terrain while trying to fit a rooster into the thick of it.CrisThe two line description of Poovan, as a film about a man fighting sleeplessness and whose life gets affected by the arrival of a little chick, appeared cute. The trailer, showing Antony Varghese jerk back every time he sees the chick and later the cock it grows into, made it seem like a fun film on the lines of Thanneer Mathan Dinangal. Poovan comes from the same team – with Vineeth Vasudevan who acted in Thanneer turning the director and Girish who directed it donning the role of a producer along with Shebin Backer. The film, which begins on a comfortable note – ordinary moments in neighbourhood homes – however slips into an uncertain terrain, trying to fit a rooster into the thick of it, and loses direction.

2018’s sleeper hit, Searching, showed you could create an effective edge-of-your-seat mystery thriller told exclusively through the use of the screens that dominate our daily lives in this century. It starred John Cho as a father whose 16-year-old daughter disappears, leading him to use all the tools of the internet to try and trace her steps in order to find her. Its follow-up, Missing, actually improves on that idea with a different story and set of characters, taking it several leaps further in creating a corker of a suspense picture that looks like what a filmmaking master such as Hitchcock might have made had he been an It genius too.
Watching Searching, which was directed and cowritten (with Sev Ohanian) by Aneesh Chaganty, I kept thinking how the real stars of the piece were the film editors who had to put together a puzzle of images in order to create a coherent story.

Directed by notable filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, Pakeezah (1972) contains everything one would envisage in a typical Bollywood film. This includes drama, romance, suspense, astounding cinematography, as well as exquisite song and dance sequences. It is a film which surely anyone infatuated with Indian cinema will love. It is also remembered for being one of the last great films to have starred the legendary actress Meena Kumari. She has been dubbed the ‘tragedy queen’ of Indian Cinema and also set the foundation when it comes to intense method acting. The film began production in the late 1950s, but took 14 years to complete. Due to a rift between Amrohi and Kumari (who were married to each other), filming came to a halt and it was in 1972 that the audience finally saw the beauty that is Pakeezah. These 14 years were no doubt worth the wait!
