Members of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television voted to crown Sophie Deraspe’s “Antigone” as best film at the Canadian Screen Awards Thursday, presented virtually by broadcasters CBC and CTV.
The film, a contemporary spin on the Greek tragedy, also won awards for lead female actor for Nahéma Ricci, female actor in a supporting role for Nour Belkhiria, adapted screenplay for Deraspe, and editing for Geoffrey Boulangé and Deraspe.
Variety’s review of the film, which was named best Canadian feature at the Toronto Film Festival, said it “feels refreshingly liberated by the spirit of Sophocles’ original material.” The “impassioned” film was “electrified by a performance of immense self-possession and dignity from revelatory new star Nahéma Ricci,” the critic wrote.
Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and Kathleen Hepburn won the prizes for directing and original screenplay for “The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open.” The film also took the cinematography award for Norm Li.

Antigone, Sophie Deraspe’s haunting French-language drama that set its adaptation of the Greek tragedy as a tale of a modern-day refugee family in Montreal, won Best Picture and tied François Girard’s The Song of Names with five wins overall Thursday at the Canadian Screen Awards, Canada’s equivalent to the Oscars.
Winners in the Cinematic Arts categories came tonight in a virtual ceremony held by The Canadian Academy, culminating three days of award handouts spanning film, TV, news, sports and documentaries.
Antigone won the Best Canadian Feature Film at last year’s Toronto Film Festival on its way to becoming Canada’s official submission in the 2020 International Feature Film race. Tonight, it also took best actress for star Nahéma Ricci, supporting actress for Nour Belkhiria, adapted screenplay for Deraspe, and Geoffrey Boulangé and Deraspe won for editing.

Update:
Winners are now indicated. I correctly guessed 11 out of the 24 categories, which is slightly better than last year, when I guessed 10 out of 24.
Previous 02.26.17:
I’ve now seen as many of the nominated films as I will be able to before tonight’s ceremony, and here finally are my educated guesses about who will take home each award — projected winners are Xed at the lefthand side. Keep in mind: those Xes don’t represent whom I think should win Oscars but whom I think will win, based on what little I can grasp about how the Academy thinks. I’ve also noted which nominees I think should win. Kindly note that this is not necessarily my take on who did the best performance/writing/FX/whatever of the year, but whom I think is best among the nominees.
I have not noted a “should win” for the feature documentary category,...

Governors act on recommendation of sound branch executive committee.
Greg P Russell, who worked on Michael Bay’s war film 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, has been removed from the list of sound mixing nominees for an alleged violation of Academy campaign regulations.
The Academy announced the development on Saturday – one day before the 89th annual Academy Awards – after it emerged Russell had called fellow members of the sound branch during the nominations phase to make them aware of his work on the film.
The action is in direct violation of campaign regulations that prohibit telephone lobbying.
An additional nominee from the film will not replace Russell. The remaining sound mixing nominees from the film are Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush and Mac Ruth.
The Academy’s board of governors voted on Thursday to act upon the recommendation of the sound branch executive committee.

It's always great to see Canadian talent being recognized by Hollywood.
While we did endure a couple of snubs today, as we would've loved to see Xavier Dolan finally be nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category for It's Only the End of the World, or a surprise nomination for Ryan Reynolds as our favourite crass superhero, Deadpool, there was still a lot of Canadian love given to us by the Academy.
Two major players are ones you'll recognize, and are also coincidentally working together on Blade Runner 2049. Canadian actor and hearthrob Ryan Gosling today earned his second Oscar nomination for playing Sebastian, the jazz pianist, in La La Land. The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.
Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.
Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

MONTREAL -- Congorama, a subdued comedy about a Belgian man discovering his roots in rural Quebec, grabbed top honors Sunday night at the Prix Jutras, Quebec's film awards.
The French-language feature, which closed the Directors' Fortnight at last year's Festival de Cannes, earned Philippe Falardeau the best director and best screenplay trophies, and producers Luc Dery and Kim McCraw the Jutra for best film.
In addition, Congorama's Paul Ahmarani and Olivier Gourmet shared the best actor prize, while co-star Gabriel Arcand grabbed the trophy for best supporting actor.
The other big winner at this year's Jutras was the Rwanda drama Un dimanche a Kigali, which nabbed six trophies, all in craft categories. These included Pierre Mignot earning the best cinematography prize, Jorane getting the prize for best original music, and Michele Hamel earning the Jutra for best costumes.
Robert Favreau's Un dimanche a Kigali also earned a best art direction prize for Andre-Line Beauparlant, the best sound prized shared by Claude La Haye, Hans Peter Strobl, Marie-Claude Gagne, and the prize for best makeup by Marie-Angele Breitner.
