UK-based streaming service FilmDoo is expanding its line-up with a focus on Southeast Asian cinema, including titles such as banned documentary Boundary and Tom Waller’s The Last Executioner [pictured].
Starting tomorrow (June 3), the platform (www.filmdoo.com/southeastasia) will stream 14 Southeast Asian films - 11 globally and three exclusive to Thailand - many of which have not been previously distributed on home video.
Nontawat Numbenchapol’s Boundary, set along the troubled Thailand-Cambodia border, premiered at Berlin in 2013, while The Last Executioner won best director and best actor at this year’s Dhaka International Film Festival.

Let’s talk remakes. Our series continues with a remake that was so good it won four Oscars, including Best Picture. This week, Cinelinx looks at The Departed (2006).
This week’s film is a rare occasion where the remake has won more awards, been on more Best Film lists and has received more overall acclaim than the original. That’s quite an impressive feat when you consider how good the original film was. Infernal Affairs (2002) is a great film from Hong Kong that won a whole cluster of cinematic honors internationally and is at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s 2006 American remake, the Departed, seems to get onto even more “Top 10” lists and also won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay at the Academy Awards. Iffr reveals Big Screen Awards nominees and the complete line-up for its Bright Future and Spectrum strands, including world premieres from the Us, China and the Netherlands.
Second Coming, starring Idris Elba and Nadine Marshall, has been named as one of 10 films up for the Big Screen Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) (Jan 21 - Feb 1).
The UK film, written and directed by Debbie Tucker Green, will be vying for a prize of €10,000 ($12,000) awarded specifically to support theatrical distribution of the film in The Netherlands

Exclusive: Thai sales company Mosquito Films Distribution has picked up Singaporean filmmaker Liao Jiekai’s sophomore feature As You Were.
The film premiered in Tokyo International Film Festival’s Asian Future competition in October and screened to a full house at the Singapore International Film Festival this week.
This follows the Thai outfit’s picking up two Malaysian films – previous Cannes director Woo Ming Jin’s The Second Life Of Thieves, which premiered in Busan, and his oft-times producer Edmund Yeo’s feature directorial debut River Of Exploding Durians, which was in Tokyo’s main competition.
As You Were was also in international competition in Torino and Nantes.
Set on an idyllic island south of Singapore, the film follows a couple spending their last moments together as their relationship falls apart, exploring their memories and the oppressive past of St. John’s Island, which was, at various points in history, a quarantine...

Thai production service and equipment company Vs Service and post-production house White Light are launching Open Sea Fund, Southeast Asia’s first regional film fund.
The new fund for Southeast Asian filmmakers will start out by supporting two feature film projects a year – one in production and one in post-production, with an estimated value of $50,000 for both projects combined.
Vs Service will provide a full camera, lighting and grip package for a feature film shooting in Thailand or the region. White Light will offer a color grading and Dcp package for a feature film.
“Thailand has profited immensely from being the post-production centre of Southeast Asia,” said White Light’s managing partner Lee Chatametikool. “With the Open Sea Fund, we want to give back to the region by opening up funding opportunities for both unknown and established Southeast Asian filmmakers.”

Pick-ups include Emmanuel Shirinian’s It Was You Charlie and Ramiro Belanger’s Clydecynic – both from Canada, and the Russian film Intimate Parts, directed by Natasha Merkulova and Alexey Chupov. All three screened in Biff 2013.
At time of writing, titles hammering out their contracts with Biff included Tsai Ming Liang’s Stray Dogs (Taiwan-France) and Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s 1996 film A Moment Of Innocence and his 1991 film Time Of Love.

A melancholic malaise permeates the incredibly subdued and softly told Second Life of Thieves, the latest feature from Malaysian director Woo Ming Jin. Set in the sweltered confines of a seaside village, the film transgresses past and present confidently. Initially confusing, later scenes inform previous ones. The 18th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) announced its line-up today with Maximilian Erlenwein’s German thriller Stereo [pictured] as the opening film.
Stereo received its world premiere in the Berlinale Panorama section in February but will recieve its Asian premiere at PiFan.
The festival’s closing film will be the world premiere of Korean director Kwon Lee’s sophomore feature My Ordinary Love Story, featuring popular stars Song Sae-byeok and Kang Ye-won.
“My Ordinary Love Story starts off as a humorous romantic comedy and later transforms into a horror mystery,” said chief programmer Jangwan Pyeon, describing it and the opening film as representative of the PiFan’s focus on more “complex genre films” this year.
The festival will screen 210 films from 47 countries with 43 world premieres and 20 international premieres. It will run July 17-27 with the closing ceremony on July 25 and encore screenings on the last two days.

A total of 12 projects have been selected for the second edition of Venice filmmaking scheme, the Biennale College - Cinema, a programme for training young filmmakers and producing micro-budget films.
The 12 teams, made up of directors and producers, come from Argentina, Belgium, UK, India, Iran, Italy, Lebanon, Malaysia, Romania, Hungary and the Us.
They will introduce their projects at a special session held today (October 14) in Venice introduced by president Paolo Baratta and the director of the Venice International Film Festival Alberto Barbera.

They will introduce their projects at a special session held today (October 14) in Venice introduced by president Paolo Baratta and the director of the Venice International Film Festival Alberto Barbera.
