Passionately acknowledged for his traditional kung fu flicks, this was Lau Kar Leung’s Hong Kong’s version of the popular Hollywood buddy-cop action comedy genre of the 80s which borrowed heavily from Peter Hyams’s “Running Scared” (1986) to Richard Donner’s “Lethal Weapon” from 1987. Due to its success, a sequel soon followed in 1990 starring Danny Lee but only Conan Lee reprised his role. It was nominated for the Best Action Choreography at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1989 but “Police Story 2” was the winner.

In a total contrast to his heroic character in “A Better Tomorrow” (1986), Chow Yun Fat portrays the womanizing and cowardly police Sergeant Francis Li mostly for laughs. Incidentally, this is the kind of clowning role his Asian audiences preferred and were fond of instead of the tough action hero type favored by the West.

As modern action cinema becomes ever more beautified, it’s incredible to look back at who became stars and wonder if they would ever get the opportunity today. Sammo Hung is one in particular as he doesn’t “look” like a star but has the presence and talent that befits one of the legendary figures of the industry. If you wanted an example, just watch this feature as it remains one of the masterworks that probably doesn’t get as much recognition as it deserves.

My passion for Hong Kong movies started over twenty years ago when, as an impressionable teenager, I discovered John Woo and his cinematic alter ego in Chow Yun-fat. Over in England we only ever got the action movies released whilst in Hong Kong many of his bigger successes were comedies. Cantonese comedy can be a bit of an acquired taste so discovering this other aspect to his screen persona has been certainly for this reviewer an eye opener.

The gambling movie is something that seems to have become a genre of its own over the years in Hong Kong. From the Hui Brothers’ “Games Gamblers Play” to the numerous spin offs of Jing Wang’s 1989 classix “God of Gamblers”, nothing better represents Hk society’s aspiration for wealth. Indeed, “The Gambling Ghost” hedges its own bets by featuring three Sammo Hungs!
Fatty (Sammo Hung) is a failing gambler working as a valet, whilst continuing to disappoint his more straight laced father (Sammo Hung). An encounter with a car thief (Nina Li Chi) finds Fatty losing his job and one of his friends (of whom is captured by gangsters). His grandfather (Sammo Hung!) returns as a ghost to help, promising to make him wealthy if he takes revenge for his murder. Hijinks and flying fists ensue as the wayward Fatty finds himself unable to avoid a final confrontation.

Screening at the 2012 Chinese Visual Festival. Director Li Junhu’s documentary “Where Should I Go?” explores one of the most interesting issues in contemporary China, the interaction between the rural and the urban. Covering themes of migration, education and money, the film presents a humanistic rather than overtly political view, and as suggested by the title asks questions rather than providing easy answers. Shot in 2010, the film is set to screen as part of the 2012 Chinese Visual Festival in London. The film tells the intertwined stories of two families who move from the countryside to the city in order to try and get a proper education for their children. The first involves a woman called Zhang Zhi Li, who decides to leave her two adolescent daughters back at their small town rural home, while she and her husband take their son to the city, hoping to have him enrolled in a school.

If you thought the last two trailers for Yueh-Hsun Tsai's Black & White Episode 1: The Dawn of Assault (痞子英雄首部曲:全面開戰) were highly explosive, wait till you watch the main trailer where the stakes has just been raised. In this action-packed film, Taiwan is under a nuclear crisis unless a hero cop played by Mark Chao (Monga) and a small-time gangster played by Huang Bo can prevent the terrorist threat. Among the climatic danger they face is a hijacked airplane hurling towards a skyrise building! Gezz, talk about shit hitting the fan. The fight choreographer is Cyril Raffaelli (District 13, Die Hard 4) and Nicky Chung-Chi Li (Shaolin, New Police Story).A mad cop, who believes in justice and is willing to do everything in his own...
