Queen Elizabeth has been played by numerous actors over the years — three in Netflix’s The Crown alone. But tracking not far behind when it comes to onscreen depictions of major British figures is former prime minister Tony Blair. Among the names to have stepped into the shiny brogues of the divisive politician are the likes of Damien Lewis, Robert Lindsay, Toby Stephens, James Larkin, Ioan Gruffudd, Stephen Mangan, Harry Enfield and Pierce Brosnan (as a version of Blair in Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer). Michael Sheen has also famously played Blair three times.
Joining this illustrious list is Bertie Carvel, the star of stage and screen who joined The Crown for its final outings in seasons five and six. While he’s mostly a supporting bystander in season five, the sixth and final season of Netflix’s hit royal drama — which centered its first four episodes, now streaming,...

Four years ago, it was announced that Ben Wheatley would be writing, directing, and executive producing Generation Z, a “hilarious, frightening, and political” series that would consist of six hour-long episodes that would “mix flesh-eating zombies into a story that satirizes how Brexit has divided the UK.” That project didn’t make it into production when it was originally supposed to because of the pandemic shutdown… but after making his latest film Meg 2: The Trench (you can read our review at This Link and check out our interview with the filmmaker Here), Wheatley has circled back around to Generation Z and is now knee-deep into filming it! To celebrate the fact that Generation Z is finally being made, Channel 4 has unveiled a batch of first look images, and you can check those out at the bottom of this article.

Kill List, Free Fire, and High-Rise director Ben Wheatley announced plans for the Brexit zombie series “Generation Z” for UK’s Channel 4 back in 2019. UK broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled first look images at the six-part series, along with its cast.
Channel 4 describes the series as a “coming-of-age parable for our very strange times – cut with a heavy dose of outlandish gore.” Check out the first look images below.
The plot for the six-part series: “In a small British town, tensions come to a head when a mysterious military convoy crashes outside the Sunnywise Retirement Home. The vehicles were carrying a toxic substance, which, as a result of the crash, leaks into the local environment and infects the residents of the retirement community. The symptoms of this infection quickly manifest – an overwhelming appetite for raw flesh. They’re old, they’re angry and they’re on the rampage. As the...

Ben Wheatley’s zombie series Generation Z is building its bite.
UK broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled a first look at the six-part series, which is currently being filmed in Wales by The Forge, the outfit that produced Help and Roadkill.
Generation Z, Wheatley’s first TV series, boasts a cast including Robert Lindsay (Wimbledon), Sue Johnston (Downton Abbey), and Anita Dobson (Call The Midwife).
The series centers on the fictional town of Dambury, where a chemical leak outside a care home starts an apocalypse led by old-aged pensioners hungry for human flesh.
A group of teenagers are caught up in the virus when one of the gang’s grandmothers becomes infected and attacks her.
Here’s the logline: “Generation Z is about intergenerational justice and community breakdown that boldly satirizes a world where truth is stranger than fiction, exploring not just the political fault lines in our society but...

As the actor stars in a new thriller, here’s your chance to ask him about Withnail, Doctor Who and Lesbian Vampire Killers
It’s funny how life works out. Liverpool-born actor Paul McGann had left school and was working in a shoe shop when he bumped into his old schoolteacher, Joe Hartley, who had given him the lead role in a school production of Antony and Cleopatra. Feeling McGann was wasting his talents fitting shoes, Hartley suggested he apply to Rada – which lead to a part in the snooker drama Give Us a Break opposite Robert Lindsay, then the lead role in Alan Bleasdale’s controversial first world war drama The Monocled Mutineer.
The rest is history. McGann went on to star as Marwood, the eponymous I to Richard E Grant’s Withnail in 1987 and then was cast as the eighth Doctor in the 1996 TV film, Doctor Who (the...

Robbie Coltrane, who has died aged 72, arrived on television in the 1980s as one of the new breed of “alternative” comedy performers. A decade later, he was making an even greater impact as the flawed criminal psychologist in Cracker. Then, moving into a new century, he was a favourite with younger audiences as Hagrid in the Harry Potter films.
He came to the fore in The Comic Strip Presents satirical films for television alongside other new faces such as Peter Richardson, Adrian Edmondson, Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French.
From the first story, Five Go Mad in Dorset, the spoofs gave Channel 4, newly launched in 1982, the subversive edge it sought in being different from the TV establishment.
Coltrane was very much part of that establishment, but at its gritty, hard-hitting centre, when he was cast as Dr Eddie Fitzgerald – “Fitz” – in Cracker (1993-96), former Brookside writer Jimmy McGovern’s creation...

It’s interesting and maybe a little bit confusing that “Maleficent” is now a movie franchise. “Sleeping Beauty,” the film that inspired the first “Maleficent,” never got any sort of sequel from Disney — unlike, say, “The Little Mermaid,” which got both a sequel and prequel that went direct-to-video. But with “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” this is officially a franchise. And, to be fair, the folktales on which “Sleeping Beauty” was based did cover a bit more ground than we saw in it or the first “Maleficent.”
Of course, “Maleficent 2” doesn’t really go to the same places those old stories did, instead taking things in a direction that could allow Disney to turn “Maleficent” into an honest-to-god franchise. And so lots of folks are going to understandably wonder if there are more “Maleficent” movies in store.
And since this is a franchise now, you’re probably wondering if this movie...

So, whatcha’ gonna’ be for Halloween? You can bet that the Hollywood Studios and the multiplex know that big holiday is charging at us like that headless horseman. The answer to that question, for many young women (and lots of older adults…of both sexes), is “Princess”. Or more specifically “Disney princess”. And what’s essential to that character? Well, other than a prince. A villain, be it a wicked stepmom or sister, evil queen, or witch. About five years ago the “mouse house” had the bright idea to re-imagine, and maybe reform, the villainess from one of their beloved animated classics, but this time with live actors (with a few make-up and CG tweaks). This may have inspired a recent trend in the superhero genre in which the “bad guys” of Spider-Man and Batman were turned into the heroes of their own self-titled features. Anyway, Disney has finally made...

Angelina Jolie returns as the fiery Maleficent and squares off against Michelle Pfeiffer, but the only thing burning here is your patience.

As much as the idea of Angelina Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer squaring off against each other holds tremendous appeal, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil falls solidly into the terrain of “sequel that no one but accountants asked for.” Competently if unspectacularly directed by Joachim Rønning (one half of the duo that brought you the last installment in Disney’s equally mechanical Pirates of the Caribbean franchise), the film exists purely to capitalize on the success of the 2014 original. Which itself was not a great film either but at least it benefited from being a clever twist on a well-worn fairy tale.
This time out, Rønning and the screenwriters concoct a hodgepodge that uses the characters to propel a story along for one reason only: to get...

“Love doesn’t always end well,” snarls Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) to Aurora (Elle Fanning) early on in the latest chapter of her namesake sequel, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” Within moments, the uneasy relationship of reluctant protector and good-spirited princess between the two characters is re-introduced, picking up where the original “Maleficent” left off.
If Maleficent’s words sound like a promise more than a warning to her accidental ward Princess Aurora, that’s because the pain of betrayal by her beloved Stefan still stings. Maleficent’s mistrust and distaste of all humans save for her precious beastie, her pet name for Aurora, reaches new comical notes when Prince Phillip proposes.
For the sake of Aurora, Maleficent puts aside her misgivings and agrees to meet Phillip’s parents, the likable-enough King John (Robert Lindsay) and the dastardly wicked Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer). When old tempers flare over dinner, Maleficent is forced to flee their castle,...

Angelina Jolie has been in far better movies than the “Maleficent” franchise, but they provide an unparalleled platform for her appeal. The same birdlike monstrosity of the first entry, cloaked in feathery gothic opulence and angular sub-human cheekbones, careens through “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” with the spirit of German Expressionism beating her wings. There’s such delicious flamboyance to this striking villainess that she outshines the latest heavy-handed Disney refashioning of the Sleeping Beauty story all over again.
The “Maleficent” universe is loaded with entrancing surfaces and the illusion of deeper significance, but no amount of far-reaching metaphors and complex mythology can obscure run-of-the-mill storybook intrigue. An overlong blend of kid-friendly “Game of Thrones” warfare and standard-issue metaphors of intolerance, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” finds plenty of ways to build on the original premise, but few that resonate any better than the last flamboyant ride.

Angelina Jolie, Michelle Pfeiffer and Elle Fanning do their best in second revisionist fairytale, but CGI battles kill the story
This sequel has got a great cast. It’s not just Angelina Jolie reprising her post-fairytale turn as Maleficent from the 2014 film, the wicked witch from the Sleeping Beauty story who isn’t quite as wicked as all that and whose reputed wickedness may simply be a function of patriarchal mythology. There’s also the estimable Elle Fanning back again as Aurora, the demure heroine who has now made up with Maleficent, regarding her as a godmother. Plus we now get Michelle Pfeiffer on decent form as Queen Ingrith and Robert Lindsay as King John – the nation’s rulers, and parents of Prince Phillip. The three digitised pixies are back – Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville – and Chiwetel Ejiofor now has a cameo as one of the horned, winged creatures from the Moors,...

Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent is back and this time she’s the mother of the bride. Disney has revealed a new trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which showcases the evil fairy attempting to disrupt the upcoming nuptials of Aurora (Elle Fanning) and Prince Philip.
The clip also gives us a glimpse of Michelle Pfeiffer, who plays the queen of a neighboring kingdom (and Prince Philip’s mom). The pair appear to be at odds and ready to fight it out using any means necessarily. During a scene at a banquet in the castle,...

Nothing says evil like a pair of protruding sharpened horns, cheekbones you could eat your dinner off and a set of wings the caped crusader would envy. Except perhaps cabbage – cabbage would make it even more evil. However, as there are no instances of brassica oleracea in the new trailer for Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil you’ll have to make do with Angelina Jolie looking angry and flying about in a huff.
The sequel sees Jolie and Elle Fanning reprising their roles as Maleficent and Aurora in a new story that picks up several years after their first adventure.
Newcomers to the series include Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein, Robert Lindsay and Harris Dickinson as Prince Phillip. They join returning cast members Sam Riley as Diaval; Imelda Staunton as the pixie Knotgrass; Juno Temple as the pixie Thistlewit; Lesley Manville as the pixie Flittle.

"There is no union! There will be no wedding!" Disney has debuted a full-length trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the dark sequel to the live-action Maleficent movie from 2014. The teaser trailer dropped a few months ago, but now we get a full look and damn this seems very dark and extra wicked. Inspired by Disney's Sleeping Beauty, we follow the story of young Aurora and her relationship to Maleficent, the "evil witch" who poisoned the princess and wants to rule over everyone. Angelina Jolie returns to star as the iconic witch, with Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith, plus a cast including Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Harris Dickinson, Robert Lindsay, Ed Skrein, Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kae Alexander, David Gyasi, and Judith Shekoni. So does this look any better? Is anyone excited for this sequel? Seems like they're trying too hard to make it look more epic than it truly is.

Princess Aurora and her fairy kingdom better watch out now that Angelina Jolie is back as the classic “Sleeping Beauty” villain in “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.”
Five years after the original “Maleficent” hit theaters, Jolie reprises her role alongside Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville in the fairytale sequel. Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert Lindsay join as Queen Ingrith and King John, rulers of the magical kingdom and Maleficent’s enemies.
“There are many who prey on the innocent. I’m sure your kind would agree,” Maleficent tells Queen Ingrith in the film’s first teaser.
“If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were making a threat,” the Queen responds.
“Well, do you?,” Maleficent asks.
“Do I what?,” the Queen wonders.
“Know better,” Maleficent says.

Angelina Jolie is back as Maleficent, the Disney villain who practically invented "tfw big mood."
Robert Stromberg's 2014 live-action film Maleficent explored the classic tale of a princess (Elle Fanning) who, on her sixteenth birthday, pricked her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fell into a deep sleep from which she would never awaken, thanks to a vengeful and powerful fairy by the name of Maleficent (Angelina Jolie). It was a pretty big hit for Disney so, even though the story wrapped up nicely, a sequel is on the way later this year.
The follow-up film finds Maleficent plunging back into a vintage dark mood after clashing with Michelle Pfeiffer's Queen Ingrith over the ongoing issues surrounding the protection of the moors. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Robert Lindsay, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, and Juno Temple also star.

While the dark sorceress received lukewarm reviews for her first solo outing in cinemas, 2014’s Maleficent did have a pretty impressive run at the box office, finishing off as the fourth highest-grossing release of that year. So, it’s not terribly surprising that production is very much underway for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the sequel to Disney’s live action revisionist take on the classic Sleeping Beauty villain.
Of course, the eponymous dark fairy will be once more played by Angelina Jolie, whose enjoyable performance in the first Maleficent impressed even the film’s detractors.
