Christopher Nolan has made a career for himself for his unconventional narrative structures of storytelling. His 11 films have ranged from psychological thrillers to science fiction epics to “The Dark Knight” trilogy, and have garnered a total of 36 Academy Award nominations, five of which for Nolan individually. With his latest directed epic “Oppenheimer” breaking box office records and gathering massive awards buzz since its release on July 21 by Universal Pictures, let’s break down Nolan’s five Oscar nominations for three of his movies.
Nolan’s first recognition at the Oscars came for his second feature “Memento,” based on his brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story “Memento Mori,” both released in 2001. The psychological mystery thriller written and directed by Nolan stars Guy Pearce as a man with anterograde amnesia and short-term memory loss as he tries to solve the murder of his wife. Australia is toasting its newest Academy Award winner in Andrew Jackson, recognised as part of the visual effects team on Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.
The UK-based visual effects supervisor joined colleagues David Lee and Andrew Lockley in London while Scott Fisher accepted the Visual Effects Oscar on behalf of the group at a subdued ceremony in Los Angeles.
They beat out Australia’s other hope in the category – Love and Monsters‘ Matt Sloan, Genevieve Camilleri, Matt Everitt, and Brian Cox – as well as teams from George Clooney’s Midnight Sky, Nick Caro’s Mulan, and Thea Sharrock’s The One and Only Ivan.
It’s the first win and second nomination for Jackson, who was part of VFX team for Mad Max: Fury Road that lost out to Ex Machina in 2016.

Instead, Searchlight’s Nomadland went home with the night’s marquee prize, and its star Frances McDormand took Best Actress, hours after the film’s Chloé Zhao made history as the first woman of color to win Best Director.

In a year lacking VFX-heavy films, Warner Bros. Tenet, one of the few tentpoles to bow in 2021 stood alone in the end by taking home the Oscar for best Visual Effects. Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi action pic beat out Netflix’s Midnight Sky, which seemed like the favorite as it took home the honor at the Ves honors.
Accepting the award from presenter Steven Yeun was Tenet’s VFX team that included Andrew Jackson, David Lee, Andrew Lockley and Scott Fisher. It was the films first win of the night. Being the only member at Union Station in Los Angeles, Fisher, who also won an Oscar for his work on Nolan’s Interstellar as well and thanked several members of the below-the-line crew but in the end it was Nolan who he said deserved all the praise.

Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony was historic in more ways than one, making the 441-day wait for the 93rd Academy Awards well worth it.
“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations — an Oscar record for diversity in those categories — but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.
“Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao made history as well, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The film also won best picture.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

The films in the running for the 2021 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “Love and Monsters,” “The Midnight Sky,” “Mulan,” “The One and Only Ivan,” and “Tenet.” Our odds currently indicate that “Tenet” (31/10) will be the winner, followed in order by “The Midnight Sky” (39/10), “Mulan” (9/2), “The One and Only Ivan” (9/2), and “Love and Monsters” (9/2).
Included among the 20 individuals in this year’s lineup are six past nominees, three of whom have triumphed here at least once before. The “Love and Monsters” team consists entirely of rookie nominees. The remaining 10 first-timers are: Matthew Kasmir, Max Solomon, and David Watkins (“The Midnight Sky”), Sean Faden, Steve Ingram, and Seth Maury (“Mulan”), Santiago Colomo Martinez, Greg Fisher, and Ben Jones (“The One and Only Ivan”), and David Lee (“Tenet”).

The 2021 British Academy Film Awards are being presented on two nights, with eight categories handed out on Saturday, April 10, and the rest being presented on Sunday, April 11. Check out the complete list of BAFTA champs here.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the most awarded film on Saturday, winning both of its nominations there: Best Costume Design for Ann Roth and Best Makeup and Hair for the team of Matiki Anoff, Larry M. Cherry, Sergio Lopez-Rivera, and Mia Neal. The film has only one other nomination: Best Actor for the late Chadwick Boseman. He stands a good chance of winning that on Sunday, which would give the film a clean sweep, so it’s a little surprising that “Ma Rainey” didn’t get nominations in any other categories.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the big winner on the opening night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, taking home two golden masks from a possible two.
Night 1, hosted virtually by radio and TV presenter Clara Amfo, was a mostly craft-centered affair which also yielded wins for “Mank,” “Tenet” and “Sound of Metal.”
The first show was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time, but according to sources the BBC made a late decision to push the broadcast by an hour. Amfo opened the show by reading a tribute to Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died Friday at the age of 99.

Christopher Nolan has become known for his innovative blockbusters, and that visual innovation has led his films to multiple Oscar nominations and wins in craft categories. His 2020 film “Tenet,” pretty much the only big-budget tentpole movie to open during the Covid-19 pandemic, continues that trend with its bids for Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects. If it wins the latter award it’ll be his third film to claim that prize, following “Inception” (2010) and “Interstellar” (2014).

It’s truly a measure of the pandemic that the 19th annual Ves Awards (to be held virtually on April 6) was dominated by Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” with 13 nominations (topped by photoreal episode). Like the Oscar shortlist, there was an absence of big budget, VFX-intensive studio films. But, truth be told, Season 2 of Jon Favreau’s engaging “Star Wars” bounty hunter series offered the industry’s most innovative tech (wrapped around Industrial Light & Magic’s improved StageCraft virtual production system).
Pixar’s “Soul” was the top animation contender with five nominations, while the feature competition was split between “Project Power,” the Netflix superhero film, Robert Zemeckis’ “The Witches” (which streamed on HBO Max), and Disney’s live-action “Mulan” (which streamed on Disney+), each garnering three nominations.

“Traditions find a way to persist,” said Lisa Cooke, Ves Board Chair. “With vision and a lot of hard work, we are proud to host our annual celebration of the artistry, ingenuity and passion of visual effects practitioners around the world – virtually. We are seeing best in class work that elevates the art of storytelling and engages the audience in new and innovative ways. The Ves Awards is the only venue that showcases and honors these outstanding artists across a wide range of disciplines, and we are extremely proud of all our nominees!

“War for the Planet of the Apes” from Weta Digital could well be on its way to the elusive VFX Oscar after winning four Ves trophies Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton (including the top feature prize). Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” won for supporting VFX, Pixar’s “Coco” earned four awards (including VFX for animation), and “Game of Thrones” took home five awards (including VFX for TV).
The “Apes” finale, directed by Matt Reeves, benefited from a Shakespearean performance from Andy Serkis as Caesar, with Weta working its wizardry in much harsher conditions for the performance-captured animation. Not surprisingly, “Apes” additionally won for Caesar, the effects simulations for the thrilling avalanche, and compositing. However, although both “Rise” and “Dawn” captured Ves prizes, neither won the Oscar, so “War” is not a certainty in its race with “Blade Runner 2049.”

Announcing the nominees for their 16th annual Ves Awards, the Visual Effects Society brought welcome news for Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” and Matt Reeves’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” each up for seven statuettes. “Despicable Me 3” is the most-nominated animated film of the year (5), while the most-honored title overall is “Game of Thrones” (11).
The 21-year-old organization consists of 3,400-plus members in 35 nations. Each year, it recognizes visual effects innovators in film, animation, television, commercials, and video games.
In 2017, Disney’s “The Jungle Book” remake claimed five Ves trophies, more than any other feature (nominations leader “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was shutout). A bunch of sequels and a remake are vying for the Best Visual Effects Oscar this year, many of them from Disney, including Bill Condon’s live-action remake of Disney’s classic “Beauty and the Beast,” Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Three Fox films offer stunning VFX: “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which advances its visual effects technology over the last Matt Reeves installment featuring Weta Digital’s astonishing array of digital apes led by performance capture master Andy Serkis as Caesar, could win Weta’s Joe Letteri (“Avatar,” “King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings”) his fifth Oscar. 'Alice in Wonderland' 2010 with Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. 'Alice in Wonderland' 2010: Plenty of visuals, no substance In the interest of full disclosure, I should start this commentary on Alice in Wonderland by saying that I have never been a fan of Tim Burton's works. I've enjoyed a couple of his movies, but the vast majority of them I've found uninspiring and, really, quite boring. Burton's eye for unusual worlds, particularly in terms of art direction and costume design, is not lost on me. But how can I possibly find Tim Burton a great director when he continues to offer the same tricks, over and over again? True, Burton's stories and characters change from movie to movie. What he offers, however, does not. What's there beyond cool visuals? What's there beyond the neo-gothic atmosphere he offers in Batman, or the brilliantly rendered chocolate factory playhouse in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

The musical numbers, guest presenters and gimmicks might be the showiest part of the Oscars, but when it comes down to it, the highlights of the ceremony are always the speeches. It's when hard-working pros from so many fields across filmmaking are told they've been honored by their peers, and get between half a minute and a few minutes to thank God, the Academy and their families. Regardless of the flaws of last night's broadcast (and there were plenty), the night certainly delivered when it came to memorable public speaking: there were no truly bad speeches, and a few that seem destined to go down in the hall of fame. We've ranked every one of last night's speeches, from the least memorable to the most (though, don't put too much weight in this: literally everyone is a winner, and each speaker did a very fine job on stage). Welcome to the 87th Oscars. Host Neil Patrick Harris opened the show with a musical number featuring “moving pictures” inserting himself into scenes from classic films. Anna Kendrick joined him in the opening number as well as Jack Black before an audience of Hollywood’s A-listers at the Dolby Theatre.
The awards season, filled with ups and downs, came to a close on Oscar Sunday with Birdman winning four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director (Alejandro G. Iñárritu), Best Original Screenplay (Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Jr. & Armando Bo) and Best Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki).
Iñárritu said his good luck charm was wearing Michael Keaton’s tighty‑whities. When asked backstage about the making of the film he said, “this film was particularly scary to be making, you know. It’s very difficult and that’s what Birdman is about. As an artist some day or two hours, you...

A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.
Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.
Julianne Moore finally converted her fifth Academy Award nomination into a win for her performance in Still Alice in what...

Birdman, Eddie Redmayne, J K Simmons and Big Hero 6 are amongst the big winners at the Oscars. Here's our round-up...
So then. We learned a few things about the Academy Awards this year. Firstly, we don't think we've ever got so many predictions wrong. Secondly, though, Hollywood sure loves films about the performing arts.
For the third time in four years, the Best Picture Oscar went to a film about showbusiness, as the big awards went roughly in line with the way bookmakers had been predicting for the past week or so. It was Birdman's night, and whilst Michael Keaton lost out to Eddie Redmayne - as had been expected - for Best Actor, Birdman took home gongs for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. It wasn't quite a surprise, but if you'd suggested that would be the case a month ago, you'd have certainly got...

Interstellar scooped the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects tonight, beating a field of some of the biggest movies of 2014. In an Oscar year dominated by smaller films, all five nominees were among the 16 highest-grossing pics of the year domestically — a fact that further cements the importance of VFX in today’s movie landscape. The trophies went to visual effects supervisors Paul Franklin, Andrew Lockley – both of whom also won an Oscar for Christopher Nolan's Incepti…...
