One thing is clear after we’ve endured a 19-month pandemic: The world now, more than ever, needs James Bond.

The creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming, might just be played by Benedict Cumberbatch in an upcoming biopic...
What's that? You think it's been a little too long since the last Benedict Cumberbatch casting rumour, and you fancy another? Ah, right you are.
The planned biopic of Ian Fleming, the man of course who created James Bond 007, has had one or two bumps over the past few years. At one stage, Duncan Jones was set to direct, until his commitment to the Warcraft movie ruled out his involvement. However, the project - based on the 2009 biography of Fleming written by Andrew Lycett - is still going. And now Benedict Cumberbatch has been linked with the lead role.
The Tracking Board reports the he's been offered the part of Ian Fleming, although that's still a little way away from him accepting it and things moving forward.

Duncan Jones, the director of Moon and Source Code, and son of David Bowie, has had to bow out of an upcoming biopic about James Bond creator Ian Fleming. See, he was attached to direct the film after completing his big screen adaptation of World of Warcraft, however, with the latest shake-ups in that production’s timeline, he’s had to leave Fleming. The video game adaptation, Warcraft, is going to keep him busy for the next two years and the folks behind Fleming don’t want to wait that long. Perhaps in an effort to capitalize on the success of Skyfall, which was the highest-grossing Bond film to date, the producers are now in a mad dash to find a director that’s ready to hit the ground running.

Sometimes, you just can't do it all. Duncan Jones is finding this out as the director has had to exit the brewing feature film on 007 creator Ian Fleming. First announced back in 2012, not much had been heard about the movie since, which would be based on Andrew Lycett's biography "Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond" and focus on the author's real life spy adventures that later informed his creation of James Bond. So why has he bounced? For the simple reason that between now and December 18, 2015, the helmer will be focused on "Warcraft," the big screen adaptation of the video game, that Universal is (currently) still planning to open opposite "Star Wars: Episode VII." But, if you're still pining for some Fleming based entertainment, don't fear. Dominic Cooper has already wrapped the Brit mini-series "Fleming." Helmed by Mat Whitecross and co-starring Annabelle Wallis, the story will focus on...

Scheduling conflicts with his upcoming movie Warcraft, an adaptation of the popular video game fantasy series, led writer/director Duncan Jones to exit Fleming, his planned biopic about the dangerous life of author Ian Fleming and how his own adventures led to the creation of his litereary character James Bond. Matthew Brown (Clowns) and Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction) co-wrote the adaptation of Andrew Lycett’s Ian Fleming biography. According to Empire, with Jones scheduled to begin Warcraft next year with additional time needed for extensive post-production, his shot at directing Fleming evaporated.

Duncan Jones is deep into pre-production and casting for the Warcraft movie, which he’ll start shooting early next year. It would seem there has been an early casualty of the Horde’s axes, because the game adaptation’s schedule means he won’t be able to work on the Ian Fleming biopic he’s been attached to for more than a year.Though the Moon man was eager to work on what is still simply being called Fleming, the producers are looking to have it filming roughly the same time that Warcraft will be in production, and given that film’s likely monstrous post-production period, Jones will be unavailable for longer than if he were shooting an effects-free indie drama. So now the hunt is on to find someone who can take over Fleming, get it cast, set up and in front of cameras early in 2014. With the release of the first trailer for Skyfall earlier this week and a handful of other Bond-related news stories, somehow I missed this intriguing little headline. As most 007 fans are probably aware, Bond's creator Ian Fleming served as a Naval intelligence officer in WWII, and his experiences in the Royal Navy inspired the fictional adventures he would write later in life. We had been hearing about the possibility of a biopic about Ian Fleming for a few years now with James McAvoy and Leonardo DiCaprio both previously rumoured to be attached. While we still don't know who will star, this week the project has been assigned a director in the form of Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code). Here is what he had to say about the announcement: "Fleming lived through one of the most perilous periods in world history, in a position that allowed him a unique vantage point of all the players,...

After making one of the finest writing and directorial debuts in recent years with Moon, Duncan Jones followed it up with one of last year’s best films, Source Code, and now it looks like he’s setting up what’s sure to be a brilliant third film, with an eye to go into production before year’s end.

A major feature film will depict the intriguing life of James Bond author and creator Ian Fleming. The legendary Fleming's colorful career included a good deal of exotic travel and wartime intrigue in British naval intelligence. Many of these aspects of his life were incorporated into the 007 novels. The film is based on author Andrew Lycett's acclaimed biography of Fleming and has the full approval of the Fleming estate. Duncan Jones (son of David Bowie) will direct. A previous Fleming biopic was made for American television in the late 1980s with Jason Connery, son of Sean Connery, starring as the author. There was also a British Fleming biography starring Charles Dance titled Goldeneye, released prior to the Bond flick of the same name. For more click here ...

With the "Skyfall" teaser still hot off the presses (and viewable below no less!), it was just announced that "Moon" director Duncan Jones will helm a biopic about "James Bond" creator Ian Fleming.
Variety has the news, saying that Jones is already busy casting the film, and it should begin shooting within the year. The project will be based on Andrew Lycett's biography, "Ian Fleming, the Man Behind James Bond."
For those of you who don't know much about Fleming, his life was almost as exciting as that of the British Secret Service agent that he created. He worked as a writer for Reuters before being recruited into the Royal Navy during World War II. There he formed a group of specialized intelligence troops and blossomed in the position. Following the war, he worked as a journalist again before he started writing the "James Bond" novels in his Jamaican home,...

David Bowie's filmmaker son Duncan Jones is slated to make a new movie about James Bond creator Ian Fleming.
The acclaimed Moon director is in the running to direct the biopic, based on Andrew Lycett's biography The Man Behind James Bond, according to Internet reports.
Casting officially is underway as studio bosses hunt for the man who will play the celebrated novelist.
Fleming's life was last turned into a movie back in 1990 when James Bond star Sean Connery's son Jason took on the role of the suave writer in The Secret Life of Ian Fleming.
Charles Dance also played Fleming in fact-based biopic Goldeneye in 1989. That film focused on the author's wartime exploits and romantic adventures, which ultimately led to his creation of 007.
Deadline.com reports the new Bond biopic will start shooting later this year - as fans of the film franchise celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of Dr. No, the first official James Bond movie.

Jones said:

The creator of James Bond lived more than his own fair share of drama, to be explored in a new 'period action movie' by the director of Moon
Some believe he dreamed up James Bond to be the bon vivant, daring and cultivated epitome of masculinity he could never quite live up to. In at least one regard, however, Ian Fleming is about to mimic his most famous creation: the author and former second world war naval commander is to be the subject of his very own movie, from the director of Moon and Source Code, Duncan Jones.
Jones will base his biopic on an adaptation by screenwriter Matthew Brown of Andrew Lycett's biography The Man Behind James Bond. The film reportedly has the support of the Fleming estate and is set to go into production later this year. It is something of a departure for Jones, whose two...

Back when DC Comics was preparing to relaunch their 52 main titles, they told The Advocate that they wouldn't be making any existing characters gay, but would be creating new Glbt characters. At Kapow this weekend, they announced a change, saying that one of the relaunched titles would feature an existing character as gay who was previously straight, who will now be “one of our most prominent gay characters.” Any guesses?

Duncan Jones burst onto the scene three years ago with his debut film, Moon, a quiet slice of science-fiction perfection that featured Sam Rockwell as a lone space station astronaut counting down the days to his return to Earth. Sophomore slump successfully averted the question became what would Jones do next? Moon director Duncan Jones has found his next film project, and I can't wait to see what he does with it! Jones, who most recently directed the sci-fi film Source Code, is set to direct a biopic that centers on James Bond author Ian Fleming. The Year of James Bond gets even better. Variety is reporting that one of our favorite up-and-coming directors, Duncan Jones of Moon and Source Code, is signed on to direct a biopic about Ian Fleming, the author and creator of James Bond, Agent 007 (who's back this year). Duncan Jones delivers a few choices quotes about his interest in the author, too. Fleming is being developed by K5 Film's Oliver Simon and Daniel Baur, PalmStar Media Capital and Liberty Films. Almost every British filmmaker dreams of making a Bond movie — I don’t even know if such an American equivalent even exists, to be honest — and although Duncan Jones might get that opportunity later in his career, the second-best option has been found for now. As Empire reports, the Moon and Source Code helmer will next helm a biopic of Ian Fleming, creator of both James Bond and, to various degrees, stories that inspired silver screen exploits these past fifty years.
While currently untitled, the film will take its cues from Andrew Lycett‘s Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond, an authorized biography that details exploits Fleming would utilize for his Bond books — Cold War maneuvering, womanizing, intrigue, and all-out tactical operations among them. Award-winning "Moon" and "Source Code" director Duncan Jones is set to make a biopic of Ian Fleming at K5 Film and PalmStar Media Capital as his third feature says Empire Online.
The story specifically focuses on Fleming's younger years as an aimless playboy growing up under the shadow of a famous family, and his experiences in WWII as an intelligence officer in the British Navy that changed his life.
It also gave him inspiration for the character of James Bond based on his own exploits, penning twelve 007 novels and two collections of short stories from "Casino Royale" in 1953 up to his death in 1964.
Jones’s screenplay is based on Andrew Lycett’s biography and is the first feature to have the cooperation of the Ian Fleming Estate. Shooting aims to begin later this year.
James McAvoy was previously linked to the project back in 2009.

'Moon' Helmer Duncan Jones' Next Project Is Biopic Of 007 Creator Ian Fleming, Film Shoots This Year
Duncan Jones is a man who's had his fair share of suitors. The one-time commercials director made one of the most exciting directorial debuts in recent memory with 2009's "Moon," and followed it up with last year's hugely enjoyable sci-fi thriller "Source Code," a film that managed to be a modest little hit ($150 million worldwide on a $30 million budget). And as such, he's since been courted for some pretty major Hollywood projects, taking meetings to direct "Man Of Steel," "The Wolverine" and "The Hunger Games" sequel "Catching Fire," but ultimately not taking any of them. Indeed, things have been quiet on the Jones front: he may have been developing passion project "Mute" and a secret sci-fi project inspired by "Blade Runner," but all we've seen from him in the last year was a commercial for a bank.
But now there's firm word on what Jones' next film will be, and it's not only a surprise,...

Based on the book "Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond" by Andrew Lycett, the script by Mark Brown will focus on how Fleming got inspired to write the Secret Agent 007 character.
The best part? James McAvoy is supposed to be attached in the lead role as Fleming. This is a great casting choice for McAvoy can do edgy action ("Wanted") and give his character its much needed heart ("Atonement").
The film is an independent feature, and right now, no distributor is attached yet. The project is currently searching for a director.

James McAvoy has been tipped to play "James Bond" creator Ian Fleming in a new movie. The "Atonement" actor has reportedly been approached to star as the writer in a biopic about his colorful life, including his role in "World War II", his playboy lifestyle and his work as a journalist.
Although a source has denied McAvoy is "attached" to the movie, based on Andrew Lycett's biography of Fleming, Britain's The Independent newspaper reports a formal approach is thought to have been made to secure the Scottish star's involvement.
McAvoy is the second Hollywood star to be linked to a big screen biopic about Fleming - Leonardo DiCaprio and his production company announced in 2008 they will be producing a picture about the author.

We know that a new biopic of James Bond creator Ian Fleming is in the works, and it looks like James McAvoy may play the author and WWII intelligence officer. Empire writes that McAvoy is attached, and we're fans of McAvoy and Fleming, meaning this news hits us pretty well.
Details are scant at this point, and there's no director on board as of yet, but based on McAvoy's age, this will likely cover the period between the war and the very beginnings of the Bond franchise, if it even goes that far. I haven't read Andrew Lycett's book on which the movie will be based, but I am reading The Irregulars, which is nominally about Roald Dahl's time in the British intelligence racket while he was stationed in Washington, D.C. Fleming, Noel Coward, and other famed Englishmen all did time with MI6 in one capacity or another during the war.

While Daniel Craig is the current 007 in residence at Eon Productions — the company responsible for 22 James Bond films, from Dr. No (1962) to Quantum of Solace (2008) — another British actor may be working with "Her Majesty's Secret Service" in the near future.
According to Pajiba, an inside source has revealed that Wanted star James McAvoy is in talks to play Bond's creator, Ian Fleming, in a biopic from Palmstar Entertainment and Animus Films.
With the working title Ian Fleming, the movie will be based on the book Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond by Andrew Lycett and is expected to focus on the years of Fleming's life that inspired him to create the world's most famous spy. Matt Brown is adapting the book for the screen, but no director has been attached yet.

“Wanted” actor, James McAvoy has been linked to the leading role in a biopic based on the life of James Bond creator, according to sources. Palmstar Entertainment and Animus Films are developing the project according to Pajiba Blog, a project which was originally linked to Leonardo DiCaprio’s own production company, Appian Way early last year.
According to Pajiba:
Currently working under the title, Ian Fleming, the movie will be about the man behind James Bond, specifically focused on the years that gave him inspiration for the Bond character.
Years before creating Bond, Fleming struggled and floundered under the shadow of his family name (his father was a member of Parliament, and his siblings were also well-known, as well, including Peter — a travel writer). Likable but lost, Fleming was little but an aimless playboy, until his experiences in World War 2 changed his life, and it was those autobiographical experiences during...

Last year, Leonardo DiCaprio became a producer on an Ian Fleming biopic that was announced. DiCaprio's film company Appian Way boarded the project, according to an La Times report. Co-producer Andrew Lazar championed the original idea. "It's going to be very different from the Bond films," he told the Times. "There are a lot of different ways to crack biopics, but we're not trying to emulate a Bond movie... The idea that this guy's life informed the James Bond character is pretty fascinating."

James McAvoy has been attached to play Ian Fleming, the man who gave us the world's most famous spy. I'm busy working on my 2009 best of list, so I'm not going to go into some big long speech about the choice. Here's more from Pajiba: The movie itself will be based on the book, Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond, by Andrew Lycett, who has also written books on Arthur Conan Doyle, Dylan Thomas, and Rudyard Kipling. The big news here, however, is that the movie — which has been independently financed to the tune of around $40 million — has James McAvoy attached in the lead, which sadly probably takes him out of the running to replace Daniel Craig in the future. McAvoy actually seems well suited to the role — he can do playboy (Bright Young Things), he can do period and war movie (Atonement), and he can do action (Wanted). Plus,...

Pajiba is reporting that James McAvoy is attached to play James Bond creator/author, Ian Fleming, in a big screen biopic. The project is currently hunting for a director, though Matt Brown penned the script based on Andrew Lycett’s biography of Fleming.
Fleming had a life and personality that mirrored his famous creation. By his own admission he always drank too much, smoked too much and loved too many women — all of which contributed to an early death at only 56 years old.
Fleming came from wealthy Scottish banking family and was a world traveler from a very early age. During World War II, he was recruited into the Royal Navy Intelligence where he organized plans like Operation Goldeneye. His military background gave him a wealth of ideas for his Bond novels and he eventually retired to Jamaica where he penned his first Bond novel, Casino Royale.

Another biopic is on the way, this time featuring the life and good times of James Bond writer Ian Fleming. The scuttlebutt is that Scotsman James McAvoy (Wanted) a fine lad, is attached to play the man behind 007 in a film strangely titled “Ian Fleming”. Ian Fleming led an interesting life to say the least. Born a rich kid, Ian went on to leave the wicked sounding Black Watch (3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland) to join Royal Navy Intelligence where he confounded the Nazi menace at every turn including leading Operation Goldeneye (the protection of Gibraltar). He basically died young at 56 after a life of wine, women, song and secret agent style danger. Oh yes and he also was a writer of some note. The movie will be based on the book, Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond written by Andrew Lycett. Could be a great movie.

Scotland may not have gotten one of their own as James Bond*, but they'll get the next best thing -- a Scot as the creator of James Bond. As Bond fans know, Fleming had a life and personality that mirrored his famous creation. He came from a posh Scottish banking family, and was a world traveler from a very early age. His military background gave him a wealth of ideas for his Bond novels, and he eventually retired to Jamaica where he'd pen Casino Royale. By his own admission he always drank too much,...
