“Black-ish” ended its eight season run on Tuesday night by going back to the beginning. Literally. The opening to the ABC comedy’s series finale began much in the same way the pilot did in 2014, with Andre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) waking up to his iPhone alarm clock and narrating a bit about his state of mind.
Even the opening strains of Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks” opened the finale, just as it did the series premiere all those years ago. “Ok, so I’m just your standard, regular, incredibly handsome, unbelievably charismatic Black dude who’s found a way to actually go from broke to the Oaks without a jump shot, number one hit or being Tyler Perry,” Anderson, as Dre, opened the episode. “Against the odds, I made a home for myself with my beautiful and intelligent wife, where we raised five great kids and looked after my parents.

Black-ish boss Kenya Barris was just hoping to get a show on the air when he first created the family comedy. Now in its final season, the ABC title starring Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross as the pillars of the Johnson family, has far exceeded his expectations.
“We wanted to say something that as much as we grew up loving the Cosby show, the Cosby show happened to be Black and we wanted to do a show that was absolutely, positively, outwardly Black,” Barris said during the comedy’s TCA panel on Tuesday. “I never in a million years imagined that it would become what it’s become. Our lives, and what we’ve done and how it’s allowed us all to grow into what it’s grown into.”

ABC has given a six-episode back order to Black-ish. The pickup brings the order for the praised comedy to 21 episode, which constitutes a full season order, with a potential for more.
The back order comes two days after the seventh season premiere of, Black-ish, which also did an hourlong election special earlier this month.
For the first time since the launch of Black-ish, ABC left the Kenya Barris-created family comedy off the fall schedule when the network announced its fall 2020 lineup in June. The series received a 15-episode midseason order.
Several days later, ABC moved Black-ish back to fall. At the time, on the heels of the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests following the death of George Floyd, the network said that after speaking to Barris, it decided that it was “important to tell these meaningful stories during this moment in time”.

Updated with character poster, 11:32 Am: ABC has released character posters for its upcoming partially animated episode of Black-ish. Here’s how the gang looks when tooned up:
Previous Sept 1 Exclusive: Black-ish is taking it to the ballot box in a partially animated and election themed special to air early next month.
Directed by Oscar winner Matthew A. Cherry, the back-to-back episodes will be broadcast on October 4 on ABC. The only caveat in that plan is if the Orlando bubbled NBA Finals are forced to shift their schedule, which would obviously have a significant ripple effect over the entire ABC programming chart.
Also, ‘Election Special Pt. 1’ and the animated ‘Election Special Pt. 2’ are not the Season 7 premiere of the Kenya Barris created comedy.
Having been enshrined on Wednesdays in the Disney-owned net’s fall schedule back in late June, black-ish’s debut date will be revealed in the next week...

Black-ish is heading into its seventh season on ABC.
But, before we get to that, the beloved comedy series will air a one-hour, election-themed special, on Sunday, October 4 at 10/9c.
The two back-to-back episodes, which will air ahead of the official season seven premiere, will follow the Johnsons as they navigate the upcoming election, with Junior (Marcus Scribner) embarking on his journey as a first-time voter and Dre (Anthony Anderson) launching an exploration into local politics.
The special will be presented in part as an animated episode with Oscar® winner Matthew A. Cherry (“Hair Love”) set to direct.
While no details about when the seventh season will premiere have been revealed, a premiere date should be revealed in the coming weeks as shows start to return to production.
ABC also notes that airdate and timing of the special are subject to the change due to the NBA Finals schedule.

ABC is set to air an election-themed episode of “Black-ish” as a two-part, partially animated special next month, the network announced Tuesday.
The hour-long standalone episode will air Sunday, Oct. 4. Director Matthew A. Cherry, whose film “Hair Love” won the Oscar for best animated short in 2019, will direct both parts.
The special will air ahead of “Black-ish” Season 7, which was moved up from midseason by ABC in the wake of the renewed Black Lives Matter protests earlier this summer. The two episodes will not serve as the season premiere, which has not yet been given an official premiere date by ABC.
Read the full episode descriptions below:
In “Election Special Pt. 1,” (10:00-10:30 p.m. Edt), Junior is excited for his first time voting but discovers he has been purged from the voter polls so he does a deep dive into why – trying to understand the systems in place for voter registration.

Tracee Ellis Ross directed her second episode of “Black-ish” last season, the superb “Black History Month,” and the second time was just as rewarding as the first. Not just because she knew how to balance the duties of an actor and director now, but directing in general gives her a greater, deeper appreciation of all the different elements that come together to produce an episode of television.
“I think the biggest benefit of directing, especially within your own family, is you really get to take an objective point of view and see how extraordinary our family is,” Ross shared during ABC’s Emmy Fyc event held on Saturday, June 1 at the Walt Disney lot in Burbank, California (watch above). “Our crew is exceptional. Even if we were great actors, if the cameramen don’t capture it, it doesn’t matter. Every piece — wardrobe, hair and makeup, Rob [Sweeney], our Dp — every single part of our crew,...

The “Black-ish” universe is expanding again.
In addition to renewing the family comedy for a sixth season, ABC has also picked up the Bow-centric prequel series, the network announced on Thursday. Titled “Mixed-ish,” the new comedy is set in the 1980s and stars Arica Himmel as a young version of Rainbow Johnson, the character played by Tracee Ellis Ross in the flagship comedy.
Per ABC, the new series will see Rainbow Johnson recount “her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ’80s and the constant dilemmas they had to face over whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves. Bow’s parents Paul and Alicia decide to move from a hippie commune to the suburbs to better provide for their family. As her parents struggle with the challenges of their new life, Bow and her siblings navigate a mainstream school in which they’re perceived as neither black nor white.

The Johnsons will be back for another go-round. ABC has picked up a sixth season of its hit comedy series black-ish for the 2019-2020 season. In addition, the network has given an early season order to mixed-ish, a spinoff about Rainbow Johnson’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s.
The black-ish renewal is not a surprise for the praised single-camera comedy centered on an affluent African-American family struggling to raise their kids in the largely white culture of well-to-do suburbia. Also not surprising was the pickup for mixed-ish, which had emerged as ABC’s strongest comedy pilot.

ABC has renewed “Black-ish” for a sixth season and has also put out a series order for a prequel to the show titled “Mixed-ish.”
The spinoff series, which has been in development since February, focuses on the experience of Tracee Ellis Ross’s character, Rainbow Johnson, growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s.
“Black-ish” centers on the Johnsons, an affluent black family in a predominantly white neighborhood. Parents Andre “Dre” (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow are trying to raise their kids, who are growing up in very different worlds than they did, to have the right values and appreciate their roots.
Season 5 of show has been posting solid ratings to-date, with an Live+Same Day rating of 0.80 in the key 18-49 demographic, and an average of 3.33 million viewers per episode.

The current fifth season of Black-ish will include a Rainbow-centric episode. The episode, which is already casting to film in March, will feature flashbacks to a teen version of Tracee Ellis Ross’ character of Rainbow. No deals are done but I hear the episode could become a backdoor pilot for a potential prequel series. Black-ish co-executive producer Peter Saji is in talks to pen the episode, set in the 1980s-90s, which will revolve around Rainbow’s growing up.
If deals make and the episode indeed becomes a planted spinoff, Black-ish creator Kenya Barris is expected to be an executive producer on the potential prequel but likely won’t have day-to-day creative involvement given his overall deal commitment to Netflix.

Exclusive: Everyone’s had those awkward family dinners where the discussion turns uncomfortable, if not downright unpleasant. That’s certainly what happens in this clip from Simple Wedding, a comedy starring and executive produced by Rita Wilson, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Tara Grammy that premieres Friday at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Take a look above.
The logline describes Mainstay Entertainment’s Simple Wedding as a romantic comedy about a young Iranian-American woman and the lengths she goes to in order to appease her parents and their need to see her settled down. But there’s plenty of subplot discussed in the clip — and how.
The film also stars Christopher O’Shea, Maz Jobrani, Houshang Touzie, Peter Mackenzie, James Eckhouse, Rebecca Henderson, Aleque Reid, Jaleh Modjallal, Angelica Gibbs & Ryan-James Hatanaka. Sara Zandieh directed it from a script she wrote with Stephanie Wu and also serves as producer alongside Ray Moheet and Norman Aladjem.
