MollywoodIt’s been five decades since ‘Bhargavi Nilayam’ was released, and the film seems to have aged well. As Aashiq Abu attempts to recreate it as ‘Neelavelicham’ on screen, he sure has the odds stacked against him. An old, haunted house. A cheerful, lonely novelist who sees the world through a psychedelic lens. A smokey-eyed, white sari-clad, beautiful female ghost who lurks in the background. A tragic love story. That’s the narrative that shaped Malayalam cinema’s first-ever horror-romantic-investigative thriller Bhargavi Nilayam (The Abode of Bhargavi), released in 1964 and directed by A Vincent. The plotline is no confounded jigsaw puzzle, especially for avid fans of Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, who cherish the playfulness, romance, and mystique of his short story Neelavelicham, on which the film was based. Basheer, who developed a screenplay from the short story, positions himself as the novelist in Bhargavi Nilayam. Though Madhu is exasperatingly mechanical as...

Ajay Devgn is in a wildly experimental mood. Swinging from the hardcore mainstream Singham, he now goes into what is arguably the quirkiest film of his career. The film to be entitled The Arab, The Camel & P Madhavan Nair is currently on the verge of completion in Priyadarshan's mother tongue Malayalam. The original stars the inimitable Mohanlal. As the film neared completion, Priyadarshan felt Ajay Devgn was the only actor in Bollywood who could do justice to the part in Hindi. Apparently, Priyadarshan was sent feelers from Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan for the role that's been described as a 'quirky blend of Peter Sellers' comedy and Charlie Chaplin's pathos. Ajay, we hear, wanted to do a hardcore comedy with Priyadarshan. But the director is convinced that this is the right film for the actor at this juncture. Last year it was his rural action-drama "Dabangg" that broke the dry spell at the box office by earning Rs.48.25 crore in the opening weekend, and this year Salman Khan's comedy "Ready" has brought the much needed respite at the box office by grossing Rs.41 crore over the weekend.<p /><p>Trade pundits, however, admit that "Ready" is not on par with "Dabangg" in terms of content and appeal and many not enjoy a long innings at the box office, but it is an entertaining film and got a good opening.</p><p>"Ready has had a good opening. The occupancy has been 90-95 percent. It is more of a family entertainer. One would not see the kind of action that was in 'Dabangg' and 'Wanted'," Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (Cinemas) of Wave Cinemas told Ians.</p><p>"Salman is perfect in the film he has done full justice to his character.

Aamir Khan will be doing a stark real-time film on AIDS with the prolific Priyadarshan, probably at the end of the year. Priyan who has worked with the other two Khan superstars, Shah Rukh and Salman, met Aamir who has given his verbal approval for the project. Priyan's other Hindi project Tezz is now on hold. The large-budget action thriller featuring Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Kangna Ranaut, Tusshar Kapoor and Zayed Khan is waiting for the sun to shine on its fate...quite literally. The makers are waiting for the sun to come out in Scotland where the rest of the film is to be shot. Explains Priyan, "About 40 percent of the film remains to be shot. I will complete it in one stretch in Scotland. But we cannot shoot it before summer when the sun comes out. I hope to complete and release Tezz by year-end." Provided Devgn has the dates.
