Welcome back to Skip Or Repeat, capsule album reviews for the week's new crop on April 24. This time: Bea Miller's pop-rock full-length debut, Public Enemy's no. 13, Jill Scott's womanly "Woman," Ashley Monroe's easy country and Eminem-curated "Southpaw" soundtrack. If none of those scratch an itch for you, give a listen to one of these other efforts: Lamb of God's heavy "VII: Strum Und Drang," Eleni Mandell's warm "Dark Lights Up," Prince Royce's party record "Double Vision" or Eleventh Day Dream's "Works For Tomorrow" from the smart folks at Thrill Jockey. What new music are you listening to? What would you recommend this week?...

Vanguard Records is set to release the third installment of Sweet Relief, a compilation series that aims to provide assistance to musicians who suffer from illness and disability. On this latest compilation, Sweet Relief III: Pennies From Heaven, an array of artists including Ben Harper and Ron Sexsmith chose to record songs that conveyed themes of assistance and support. One such track is from Eleni Mandell performing “I’ll Be Home.” “The song is a from one if my favorite records, Nilsson Sings Newman,” says Mandell. “Randy Newman is definitely one of my favorite songwriters, and Nilsson’s versions of his songs...

Music has always been present in Eleni Mandell’s life. Since receiving her first record (Shaun Cassidy’s Greatest Hits) for her 4th birthday, Mandell instantly associates musical numbers with all of her fondest memories. Her latest record, I Can See the Future was released this summer, and Paste has the exclusive on her latest video, “Bun in the Oven.”...

Los Angeles singer/songwriter Eleni Mandell released her latest album, I Can See the Future, July 10 on Yep Roc Records. The album is Mandell’s first official label release, but I Can See the Future is significant for reasons far more personal than signing a distribution deal. The album was written and recorded in the aftermath of a difficult breakup and her subsequent search for a sperm donor, pregnancy and birthing of twins. It was one of the most trying periods of Mandell’s life, but now, at 42, she is happier than ever and is about to start touring in...

Eleni Mandell should get some sort of medal for the circumstances under which she recorded her latest album, I Can See the Future. Not only did she write it during one of the most difficult periods of her life, a time when she split up with her boyfriend because of procreative differences, sought out a sperm donor, and then, finally, was able to get pregnant (with twins), but she began the recording process when she was eight months pregnant....

Michel Gondry has directed a creative new video for indie trio The Living Sisters — who are not actual sisters — in which the ladies overcome a series of catastrophic events including accidents, fires, shootouts, airplane turbulence, and an earthquake as they travel to a hospital to celebrate the birth of a baby. Becky Stark, Inara George (of The Bird and the Bee, who was four months pregnant at the time of the shoot) and Eleni Mandell each have their own panel in the triptych format, which recalls movies like the original Thomas Crown Affair and Woodstock. The contrast of the jaunty, pleasant harmonizing with the apocalyptic destruction surrounding them (as well as the Matchbox cars) immediately marks it as Gondry's goofy, winking style. Gondry fans might also be put in mind of the split-screen video he directed for Cibo Matto's "Sugar Water" [...]...

Individually, The Bird And The Bee vocalist Inara George, singer-songwriter Eleni Mandell, and Lavender Diamond frontwoman Becky Stark all have gentle, sweet, and uncompromisingly pleasant voices, so it’s not a stretch for them to turn in a collaborative effort that is gentle, sweet, and uncompromisingly pleasant. As The Living Sisters, the trio sticks to jazzy close-harmony tunes that are so deliberately retro they sound like pop standards, even though they’re not. Given the women’s collective vocal prowess, it’s unsurprising that their debut album, Love To Live, is consistently pitch-perfect in the literal sense. But the sweetly ...

This smokin' hot singer-songwriter from L.A. might be ready to light up the rest of the country.

Mandell under the radar no more
Los Angeles hipster and Tom Waits acolyte Eleni Mandell has been writing and singing sultry pop-noir songs for almost a decade now, but it wasn't until 2007's stark, brooding Miracle of Five that she started to receive the acclaim she deserves. That album ended up on several year-end Best Of lists, including Paste's. Her follow-up, Artificial Fire, should ensure that the radar is firmly fixed on her music for a long time to come—this big, bright blip on the screen is the best pop album I've heard in months.
