Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were excited to share how Wicked finally made it to the big screen with them in the starring roles.
“Like theater geeks worldwide, they’ve waited more than 20 years for the Wicked musical to be adapted for the screen. Directors as varied as J.J. Abrams, Ryan Murphy, and Rob Marshall were all reported to have circled the movie at some point; rumor has it actors like Lea Michele and Amy Adams did too. For years, Stephen Daldry was attached to direct, but that version fell apart. Why did it all take so long?”

Emily Blunt is known for her versatile roles and collaborations with esteemed directors, which include Christopher Nolan, Rob Marshall, Rian Johnson, and Denis Villeneuve. Therefore, it’s not really a surprise she delivered excellent performances in films like Sicario, The Devil Wears Prada, Looper, and Mary Poppins Returns. The entertainment law firm of Gendler & Kelly has changed its name as of today to Gendler, Kelly & Cunningham, reflecting the elevation of partner Sarah Cunningham.

Cunningham “has represented the firm’s clients with an intelligence, diligence, creativity and insight rarely found in one lawyer,” Gendler said. “Her ability to navigate complex deals, coupled with her sensitivity to our clients’ diverse interests and career goals, are a tremendous asset to our firm. In 2021, we made the easy decision to ask Sarah to become the firm’s first new partner in our 26-year history. Actress Penelope Cruz’s children would love to see her star in a superhero movie. “If it’s something interesting, why not? It’s fun. As you could imagine, that’s what my kids ask me sometimes, ‘Are you ever going to do that, mom?’ Because I’ve done so much drama and so many films I can’t show to them yet,” the actress, who has Leo, 12, and Luna, ten with her husband Javier Bardem, told Variety.
Cruz is also keen to make a musical movie, and she’s already looking forward to the challenge. The actress shared: “I’m going to do one soon, I think. I was very fortunate to do ‘Nine’ with Rob Marshall. I had an incredible time. It forced me to go back to dancing to five hours a day. We’re planning something that makes me very happy.”

The giant gramophone scene in “The Color Purple” was the film in microcosm for director Blitz Bazawule. That’s the transformational moment where Celie (Fantasia Barrino) imagines being atop an enormous record that rotates on the turntable around her new best friend, Shug (Taraji P. Henson), soaking in a bathtub. It’s beautifully underscored by Celie singing “Dear God – Shug.”
This served as Bazawule’s entry point for his new version of “The Color Purple,” adapted from the Broadway musical (itself based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel), through the magical realism of Celie’s imagination. It was also his crucial pitch for enticing a hesitant Barrino to play Celie on screen after putting her triumphant yet painful portrayal on Broadway behind her.
The pitch worked: It convinced Barrino of an untapped interior world still left to be explored inside Celie’s head. Together they found inspiration for re-imagining...

When a movie making $500m – half a billion – is considered a financial disappointment, might it be time to rethink the Hollywood model?
The story of Disney’s live action take on The Little Mermaid was glossed over a little when the studio’s box office performance was assessed this year. The film, directed by Rob Marshall and starring the terrific Halle Bailey in the lead role, cost the studio a reported $250m or so to make, and returned $569m once its global takings had been totted up.
A decent amount of change by most people’s standards, and for another other studio but Disney, that’d be regarded as a decent result. Yet it’s not enough by the standards of corporate Hollywood, and certainly not the numbers the company was hoping for when it greenlit the film.

Shortly after Halle Bailey and Rachel Zegler were crowned real-life Disney princesses, they met for the first time at a ball — the 2021 Met Gala, to be exact. It was the beginning not only of a beautiful friendship, but of a new era for Disney. Bailey became the first Black Ariel in Rob Marshall’s live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” based on Disney’s beloved 1989 animated film. Zegler — who used to dress up as Snow White as a little girl — will embody a Latina fairy-tale heroine who befriends seven CGI-created dwarves in 2025’s “Snow White.”
The singer-actors are also showcasing their golden voices in literary adaptations: Bailey, as young Nettie in “The Color Purple”; Zegler, as Lucy Gray Baird in the “Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.” Here, Bailey, 23, and Zegler, 22, reflect on their princess experiences and strategies for silencing the social media haters.

Recreating epic battle scenes was just part of the challenge in filming “Napoleon” with director Ridley Scott, says Polish-born cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, who screened the grand-scale biopic at the Camerimage cinematography festival in Poland on Friday.
Getting the realism needed to capture the vast brutality of the Battle of Austerlitz or Waterloo, says Wolski, depends on exhaustive planning and coordination, of course, but also some impressive juggling.
“You’re basically creating a huge event. You have army personnel, you have extras trained to behave like soldiers from the 19th century, you have horse people, then we have armor, you have professional effects people, explosions, then you have main characters. You basically design the whole battle.”
Keeping track of all of these would be a challenge for even an experienced director, Wolski notes, but in Scott’s case, he actually films them all at once – while also ensuring he gets every...

This year’s awards-contending films offer a treasure trove of crafts that includes transformations, exquisite sets, lavish costumes, memorable scores and songs and immersive cinematography. The contenders range from newcomers to legends — Variety breaks down the categories below.
Makeup And Hair
Prosthetic makeup designer Kazu Hiro could very well walk away with his third Oscar for his work on Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.” Transforming Cooper into the legendary composer Leonard Bernstein consisted of five different stages to gradually age the actor. And the guild as well as the Academy love a transformation.
Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” could be a contender in this area, following in the footsteps of the first two films that landed guild nominations. The sheer volume of prosthetics and wigs went into building the characters such as the humanimals, the hybrid of humanoid and animal, and the villain, the High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji.

Two celebrity-led production companies — Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap and Brad Pitt’s Plan B — are in talks to co-produce a remake of the classic 1934 comedy mystery “The Thin Man.”
LuckyChap and Plan B have not engaged in any discussions yet about casting due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. However, according to sources, both companies have been intent on securing exclusive rights to the significant film series since before the WGA strike, which started in May. The two companies would produce jointly.
The rights to “The Thin Man” series just recently became available. Previously, Rob Marshall and Johnny Depp were set to direct and star, respectively, in a remake. However, Warner Brothers said at the time that the project was never greenlit and was scrapped back in 2012.

Following an extensive auction, LuckyChap and Plan B Entertainment are in exclusive talks to acquire rights to the classic Thin Man series. The rights recently became available and LuckyChap and Plan B had been eyeing this for some time pre-wga strike. No discussions of starring roles are happening out of respect to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Both companies would produce together.

One of the most eagerly awaited guests of Milan Fashion Week was Oscar winner Penélope Cruz, chosen by Italian shoe and clothing brand Geox as ambassador for its fall-winter 2023 campaign. During the press presentation, the Spanish actress also presented a special collection of garments and accessories ($190-$495), some 20 pieces including footwear and outerwear, designed by herself in collaboration with Mónica, her younger sister, a dancer and actress herself, also known to the general public for her role in the hit Spanish TV series Un Paso Adelante.
“A testimonial with a strong and credible image like Penélope Cruz adds value to our communication. Penélope expresses professionalism, beauty, grace and character, the traits of a modern and contemporary lifestyle that we want to convey,” said Livio Libralesso, ceo of Geox.

When Sean Connery opened the envelope in 2003 for Best Supporting Actress, he simply pronounced the winner as “Catherine.” Such was the expectation of her win and the sensation she had caused in the film “Chicago” that his former co-star didn’t even feel the need to pronounce her full three names: Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Zeta-Jones initially was known to American audiences for her statuesque and striking beauty. She first gained notice on these shores in a television mini-series about the Titanic. The series aired a year before James Cameron‘s film of the Titanic story swept into movie theaters. She then began appearing on the big screen in a number of ingenue roles.

Though she rose to fame thanks largely to her looks, Italian superstar Sophia Loren more than proved her acting chops with a series of international hits and an Oscar win for Best Actress. But how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934 in Rome, Loren began appearing in films both in her native Italy and in Hollywood, popping up in several titles that played more to her incredible beauty than her acting chops. That all changed with “Two Women” (1961), a stirring drama from Italian neorealist Vittoria De Sica that cast her as a mother protecting her daughter from the horrors of World War II. The role brought her international acclaim and Oscar, BAFTA and Cannes Film Festival victories as Best Actress, making her the first performer in a foreign language film to win at the Academy.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid debuted on Disney+ last week and made one hell of a splash. According to Disney, The Little Mermaid has garnered 16 million views in its first five days on the streaming service, which makes it the most-watched Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since the release of Hocus Pocus 2 last year.
While The Little Mermaid wasn’t one of Disney’s strongest-performing live-action remakes, it went on to gross $569 million worldwide and stands (so far) as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Judging by the streaming numbers, it seems that many were eager to revisit The Little Mermaid (or watch it for the first time) on the streaming service. Disney says that a view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

Plenty of Disney+ users have made The Little Mermaid a part of their world, the streaming service announced Monday.
In the first five days since its Disney+ release on Sept. 6, The Little Mermaid — the live-action reimagining of the 1989 Oscar-winning animated classic — has collected 16 million views worldwide, according to the platform. To count the number of “views,” Disney divides a title’s total viewing time by its run time, which is the same process that it used to recently assess the early streaming numbers for the premiere episode of Star Wars series Ahsoka. (Netflix also uses the same formula to calculate views for its own weekly top 10 lists.)
The figure represents solid interest in director Rob Marshall’s feature that hit theaters May 26 en route to collecting over $560 million at the global box office. By comparison, Hocus Pocus 2 — which was released directly to Disney+ last October — had more than 26 million...

Currently among Gold Derby’s top 10 films likely to receive Best Picture bids at this year’s Oscars are “The Color Purple” and “Maestro.” What both movies have in common is that they happen to be produced by Steven Spielberg. If they both get in as expected, this would be the first time Spielberg personally received Oscar nominations for two different movies in the same year.
“The Color Purple” follows Celie Harris Johnson (Fantasia Barrino), an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s. Spielberg was previously nominated for producing the 1985 film adaptation of Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, which he also directed. This new movie, which is adapted from the 2005 Tony-winning stage musical iteration, is currently in fifth place for Best Picture with 11/1 odds.

Though his personal tragedies and demons have sometimes overshadowed his work, there’s no denying the impact Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski has had on cinema.
Born in 1933 in Paris and raised in Poland, Polanski’s childhood was marked by tragedy when he was separated from his parents during the Holocaust. As a child, he escaped the Krakow ghetto after his mother was killed in an Auschwitz gas chamber. When the war ended, he was reunited with his father and returned home.
He turned to filmmaking as a student, making his directorial debut with the international hit “Knife in the Water” (1962), which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His followup, the psychological thriller “Repulsion” (1965), was an even bigger hit, and he was soon drafted by Hollywood to direct the occult horror film “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968), which earned him a Best Adapted Screenplay bid.

Editor’s note: One in a series of stories marking the 100th day of the WGA strike.
As the WGA strike clocks 100 days, simply put — the motion picture studios had always been bracing for this.
Unlike the current SAG-AFTRA strike that forced the global shutdown of Hollywood movies including Gladiator 2 and Deadpool 3, the WGA strike, though largely considered to be a TV and streaming fight, has left its mark on the motion picture side — most predominantly on initially shaking up the theatrical-release schedule.
Franchise leader Disney was the first studio to overhaul its calendar with the move of 21 movies from 2025 through 2031. Chief among them was the delay of James Cameron’s long-in-the-works Avatar 3 pushing from Christmas 2024 to 2025, and several Marvel projects redated including Phase 6 finales Avengers: Kang Dynasty going from the start of May 2025 to 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars shifting from May 2026 to May 2027. Disney’s live-action reimagining of The Little Mermaid is hitting Disney+ on Sept. 6, after a very hearty 103 theatrical window.
The Little Mermaid debuted over the four-day Memorial Day weekend to $118.8M domestic. Worldwide it had a $164M start.
The pic, directed by Rob Marshall, grossed north of $564M worldwide, however, wasn’t the billion success of other Disney live-action takes of their animated pics, i.e. Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. Little Mermaid faced headwinds at offshore markets due to the casting of Halle Bailey in the lead role; this despite rave reviews, Deadline’s Pete Hammond extolling that the actress “simply soars, a gorgeously conceived Disney princess who longs to become human just to check it out. Bailey’s vocals alone are the price of admission including making her signature ‘Part Of Your World’ thrilling to behold.”
The Little Mermaid fared better stateside than overseas, grossing $297M to $267M.

Few Disney villains are as delightfully wicked as Ursula, the sea witch in "The Little Mermaid." That goes for the animated version voiced by Pat Carroll in the 1989 film as well as the less impressive live-action version with Melissa McCarthy. She just loves being evil and milks every second of enjoyment out of her dastardly plan to take Ariel's voice (Halle Bailey) to get back at her brother Titan (Javier Bardem).
McCarthy was born for this role and made it her own, including her big number "Poor Unfortunate Souls," which was a lot to live up to. She did, however, have one issue with a bit of advice she got from director Rob Marshall and producer John DeLuca. So many kids beloved the original film, and this advice/stage direction might have gotten this version of the film pushed out of the PG slot it ended up in, as she recently told Entertainment Weekly.

Oscars’ diamond jubilee crowned “Chicago” Best Picture. The Rob Marshall musical took home six trophies total, the most of the night, and was the heavy favorite going in, but the “Chicago” team was probably sweating bullets down to the wire. May came around quickly, and with it, the Disney live-action of The Little Mermaid on the big screen. The original animated Disney classic is over 30 years old now and loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen‘s story of The Little Mermaid. Decades later, the creators have still managed to convey the atmosphere of the comic in the live-action. The film stars newcomers Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King. They’re alongside established legends such as Melissa McCarthy and Javier Bardem, and Rob Marshall directs it. Although the creators stuck pretty closely to the protocol, there are a couple of surprising changes in the...

After the death of Stephen Sondheim in November 2021, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda refocused his energy on writing musicals.
Speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival on Tuesday, in conversation with Rosie Perez, Miranda said he was greatly affected by the death of the legendary composer, who was a friend and a mentor. His passing inspired Miranda, whose career has included acting, directing movies and composing, to return to songwriting.
“I think two things happened when he passed. One was this loud and clear directive from either God or Sondheim, of ‘Get back to the piano and get back to writing,’” Miranda said. “So that’s a lot of what I’m doing now.”
The goal, Miranda says, is to “get as much of that stuff that’s in me, out of me, as possible,” which also means not writing another Hamilton or In the Heights.
“I think the other lesson was in never repeating yourself,...
