The Animal Kingdom (Thomas Cailley)
In The Animal Kingdom, an Un Certain Regard-selected science-fiction romp from France, human-animal mutations are the new norm. Director Thomas Cailley begins things in media res with a familiar disaster-movie scene: François (Romain Duris) and Émile (Paul Kircher)––father and son, respectively––are stuck in traffic, making chit-chat, when something slowly begins capturing the attention of other drivers. An ambulance across the way begins to rumble. Then a man with a large winged arm bursts out, causing some damage before scurrying down a tunnel. Only mildly ruffled, François exchanges a jaded aphorism with another driver over: “Strange times.” – Rory O. (full review)

Alicia Keys has shared a new music video for “Lifeline,” her contribution to The Color Purple (Music From and Inspired By) soundtrack album.
“Lifeline” is quintessential Keys, an infectious offering of upbeat, heartfelt, piano-driven pop R&b (Keys co-produced the song with Tricky Stewart, Marshmello, and Tms). The video, directed by Diane Martel, pairs an array of clips from the upcoming movie with footage of Keys performing the song on a soundstage in a variety of costumes and settings.

Miley Cyrus poured her heart, soul, and apparently, her performance salary into her 2014 "Bangerz" tour. "Bangerz," her fourth studio album, notably re-established Cyrus's musical career following her departure from Disney Channel. A mix of hip-hop, pop, and R&b, the album turned the public's vision of Cyrus as an artist on its head. The accompanying tour further solidified her artistic transformation.
Between wiggling her tongue in front of thousands and belting out bawdy lyrics coupled with highly suggestive dance moves, Cyrus reinvented herself. In a Sept. 3 TikTok video promoting her emotional new single, "Used to Be Young," Cyrus reflected on her "Bangerz" era and said that she paid for a majority of the tour's over-the-top props with her own money. "I didn't make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent," she said in the TikTok video.

Miley Cyrus is revealing what went into making 2014’s Bangerz Tour come to life as well as why it “was an investment in myself.”
During a recent edition of her Used to Be Young TikTok series, in support of her latest single of the same name, the pop star admitted that she “didn’t make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent.”
Cyrus explained that she struggled to find people who saw her creative vision, adding, “A lot of these ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces, so I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face on my tongue.”
She said people kept questioning her, asking, “Why are you doing this? You’re going to do like 100 shows and not going to make any money.” But for Cyrus,...

Miley Cyrus says she paid for virtually all of the outlandish props used in her iconic Bangerz tour, as she felt it was what “exactly what I and the fans deserved.”

TikTok megastar Addison 'Rae' Easterling, who counts 78 million followers, surprised fans last night with the news that she's pursuing a music career by dropping the music video for her debut single, "Obsessed."
The news arrives after it was announced yesterday that Easterling's debut feature, He’s All That -- a gender-flipped remake of the hit ’90s film -- is coming to Netflix in a reported $20 million deal.

Surprise: Addison Rae is starting a music career. On Thursday night, the 20-year-old social media influencer and entrepreneur — who calls the likes of Kourtney Kardashian and Hailey Bieber close friends — dropped her first-ever single, “Obsessed,” along with an accompanying music video.

Netflix unveiled its first unscripted music show today. “Westside,” which premieres globally on Nov. 9, is a genre-defining eight-episode series that follows the lives, loves and assorted struggles of nine aspiring artists (including former “American Idol” finalist Pia Toscano) as they pursue ever-elusive success in the modern-day music industry. Eschewing the standard competition-style format, this innovative approach intersperses raw docu-series footage with slick music videos and 20 original songs that emphasize the show’s themes and character story arcs.
The production quality of the series’ cinema-verite approach, along with a gritty, unfiltered look at the reality of struggle for success in Hollywood, makes “Westside” the polar opposite of the sanitized fantasy-like “Cinderella” story approach of a show like “American Idol.”
“Westside” also features original music written by some of today’s top hitmakers, among them Diane Warren, Philip Lawrence, Ryan Tedder, Shane McAnally, Jason “Poo Bear” Boyd, Pat Monahan, Johan Carlsson, Ross Golan,...

Charli Xcx is getting into the Halloween spirit in the music video for her brand new single, “After the Afterparty,” which she released last week. Featuring zombies, dance parties, and random body parts galore, the video would make for great hype material if there ever happened to be an undead apocalypse.
The clip stars Charli and her zombie friends making the most of the night, presumably after an after party, and director Diane Martel helps the living dead rise once again. Martel is probably best known for her videos for songs like “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus or “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke, so enlisting a director of her calibre to take creative control of such a fun video idea definitely worked out in the end. Guest vocalist Lil Yachty makes an appearance, too, of course, and it just isn’t a party unless he arrives.

After a few bumps on and in the road for Miley Cyrus -- especially after a hospitalization this spring -- her "Bangerz" tour has stayed on course, and making waves for its provocative imagery, big songs, high-cut leotards and that omnipresent tongue. Robin Thicke released his new music video for "Get Her Back" today, which has everybody abuzz with a similar sentiment: um, what a creep. The singer is shirtless, with waves of ghostly lady-figures haunting his narration. "I never should have raised my voice or made you feel so small / I never should have asked you to do anything at all," he sings at his now-estranged wife Paula Patton, for whom he's made this song, this video and his entire album -- I kid you not -- "Paula." His face is bleeding and texts fly across the screen. "I made an album for you." "I don't care." "This is just the beginning..." Girl, change your number. While the brazen attempt to "get her back" is bold at the very least, there are a few issues that come up in this A/V adventure that have been repeated in Thicke's YouTube playlist.

As I mentioned in my overview of 2013's best horror-friendly albums, it's been a bountiful year for terror tunes... and I wouldn't want to neglect the amazing visuals that accompanied so many of those sinister sounds. As there were legions of worthy candidates to chose from, and some genres tend to lean more heavily toward horror content than others, I decided my favorite vids from across the spectrum of musical categories – pop, Edm, alt-rock, metal, industrial, hip-hop, experimental and so on. I also went with alphabetical order by artist, to avoid the whole apples-to-oranges thing between musical styles. Many of these vids have been featured on our pages in 2013, while several made their world premieres right here. A few of these clips are totally unsafe for work viewing, but assuming you've got an age-appropriate viewing audience gathered around the monitor, it's time to shake your blood with a visual cornucopia of rock and shock.

Cyrus, 20, had been working on the VMAs performance of her hit "We Can't Stop" - along with her racy duet with Robin Thicke - for about a month before MTV's big awards show on Sunday. "Most it came from Miley's brain," Cyrus's manager Larry Rudolph tells People. "But she collaborated with [her music video director] Diane Martel, who helped her conceive it and bring in the spirit of the VMAs. And with Todd James who designed all of those amazing bears." Though her skimpy, flesh-colored outfit, her suggestive use...

Cutting edge isn't usually applied to a show 30 years in, particularly awards shows, but little about the MTV Video Music Awards is usual.
The 30th VMAs will be celebrated live Sunday, Aug. 25 from Brooklyn's Barclays Center. Some, like Kelly Rowland, will present an award because she wants to be part of it. Kanye West will make a record seventh appearance at the VMAs.
"I always love those things because it's like an old high-school reunion," Robin Thicke tells Zap2it. Thicke's sexy video "Blurred Lines," which was holding onto No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart longer than any other song of 2013, took three nominations.
"I just told [director] Diane Martel I wanted to do a funny, silly video, and she came up with funny, silly ideas, and came up with a version clothed and a version naked, and she put it all together," Thicke says.
Despite the controversy over the video's sexual themes,...

On Monday (July 29), it was revealed that Miley Cyrus' music video for "We Can't Stop" has become the fastest video to reach 100 million views on Vevo and, to thank fans, Cyrus released a director's cut of the wildly popular video.
The new look at the video, directed by Diane Martel, keeps all of the insane imagery from the original (Hello there, fry skull!), while adding in some more twerking and moments of Cyrus mimicking a performance of the song during the video's party.
Cyrus' video reached "Certified" status on Vevo in just 37 days since its June 19 premiere, unseating former record-holder Eminem and his clip for "Love The Way You Lie" featuring Rihanna, which hit 100 million in 39 days.
Take a look at the director's cut of "We Can't Stop" below and let us know which version you prefer:...

Here are some things that cost $250,000.
An 8-carat diamond-and-platinum engagement ring.
A brand-new house in Las Vegas.
Raising a human being.
Know what else may have cost up to a quarter-million dollars? That "Blurred Lines" video. You know: The one with three girls, no clothes, a handful of mylar balloons and a white backdrop. That one.
Actually, to be fair, the visual representation of Robin Thicke's Pharrell-fueled jam o' the summer is actually two videos, one featuring Thicke, Pharrell Williams and rapper T.I. in suits and three models in plastic shirts; the other much the same, but without the tops for the ladies.
Oh. I forgot the live goat. And the stuffed dog. And the single bale of hay. And some big words that occasionally come between the audience and all those boobies.
But still: Up to two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. For 4 minutes 31 seconds of ... that.

Robin Thicke shows no signs of stopping. The 36-year-old singer released his hit single "Blurred Lines" this spring, and the Pharrell-produced track just set a record for the year.
By topping the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart this week, "Blurred Lines" now holds the title of the single with the most weeks spent at the No. 1 spot on the chart for 2013, according to Billboard. With seven weeks at No 1., "Blurred Lines" beats out Macklemore's "Thrift Shop," which dominated for six weeks beginning in February.
Thicke is up against overall record-holders Maroon 5 whose "One More Night" led the Hot 100 for nine weeks in 2012. Other contenders include Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" which held for eight weeks last year.
The lead single off of Thicke's upcoming album, "Blurred Lines" has already been certified multi-platinum. The track has also been a controversial one, prompting criticism from some who felt the lyrics were questionable and misogynistic.

Given the massive controversy -- not to mention runaway success -- of Robin Thicke's summer hit "Blurred Lines," it's not surprising that someone eventually decided to create a gender-reversed version of the video. Luckily for us, the newest parody, created by Mod Carousel, is clever, thought-provoking and very sexy.
Mod Carousel, a Seattle-based boylesque troupe, recreated the video with Caela Bailey, Sydni Devereux and Dalisha Phillips on vocals, standing in for the original video's Thicke, Pharrell and T.I., respectively. Carousel's own Trojan Original, Paris Original and the Luminous Pariah play the roles of the half-clothed (or mostly naked, depending on the version) models present in the Thicke video.
The lyrics are tweaked a bit, too. "I'm going to take a good boy," Bailey sings, continuing, "You're just so manly. ... You're the hottest d**k in this place." Later, the balloons that Thicke's original video used to spell out...

The music video for Miley Cyrus' new single "We Can't Stop" has created quite a stir, what with its bizarre and racy imagery, but for director Diane Martel, it serves a window into the inner Miley.
In an email with MTV News, Martel writes that the clip wasn't ended to be shocking, but rather offer a sort of personal statement. "We set out to make something we would love and we did! I don't see this video as shocking, it's creative," she says.
Cyrus was very involved in the creation of the video, the director says, helping Martel and her team select images from blogs and pop artists to reflect the singer's new creative spirit. "We spoke a lot and sent photos back and forth; we spoke about her love of her close friends," Martel says. "She is not a career-crazed kid. Her music is intensely important to her...

Having a blast in the Big Apple, Miley Cyrus showed up at SiriusXM Studios for some promotional duties this morning (June 27).
The “Party in the USA” dame plugged her new single and made sure to take plenty of pictures in the lobby photo booth.
Meanwhile, Cyrus’ music video director Diane Martel recently spoke out against the criticism aimed at Miley’s new clip for her “We Can’t Stop.”
"We set out to make something we would love and we did I don't see this video as shocking, it's creative."
Martel also discussed the planning process- "We spoke a lot and sent photos back and forth; we spoke about her love of her close friends. She is not a career-crazed kid. Her music is intensely important to her but so is her social life; [so] we spoke about the joy of tight friendships. To me, she is showing us, the audience,...

They may have had a flirtation going on a few weeks ago, according to the tabloids, but now, Miley Cyrus is definitely coming out on top. Her odd video for “We Can’t Stop” broke Justin Bieber’s record for most views in 24 hours on Vevo. Vevo broke the news via a tweet. It was a close race, but on June 19, its first day of release, Cyrus’s Diane Martel-directed video drew 10.7 million views, slipping ahead of Biebs’ “Beauty and The Beat,” which tallied 10.6 million views, according to Mashable. The debate over "Blurred Lines" — which started when Robin Thicke released a wildly Nsfw version of the video and has been percolating ever since the single hit No. 1 — is largely about nudity. In the original version of the video, three models can be seen parading around naked, while their male counterparts are fully clothed; pair that with some uncomfortable lyrics ("I know you want it," specifically) and an extremely bone-headed Robin Thicke quote embracing a "degrading" vibe, and you have the makings of a scandal. Is it exploitative? Is it charming? Here are some thoughts from the video's director, Diane Martel, who took the charges head-on in a Grantland Q&A: I wanted to deal with the misogynist, funny lyrics in a way where the girls were going to overpower the men. Look at Emily Ratajkowski’s [the brunette] performance; it’s very, very funny and subtly ridiculing. That’s what is...

Imagine if American Apparel threw a party in honor of Fiona Apple's "Criminal" video at a nightclub described by Stefon from Saturday Night Live. Then add in some Build-a-Bear Workshop overstock, some grills, a French fry skull, a piñata full of hot dogs and a lot of shots of Cyrus's tongue and butt and you've basically got the Diane Martel-directed video for Miley Cyrus's "We Can't Stop." To quote Forrest Gump, "That's all I have to say about that." But what do you have to say? Is it a deliberately self-referential parody of Cyrus's rep as a party girl?...

Adam Lambert dropped his new video for his first Trespassing single, "Better Than I Know Myself," on Friday (February 3).
The video takes a look at the two sides of Lambert: a leather-wearing, liquor-swilling bad boy and a sweater-donning, tea-drinking homebody.
During the video, the two personas seem to battle it out in different apartments connected by a clear wall and one oxygen supply.
In the end, as the bad Lambert sets his apartment on fire, killing good-guy Lambert's air supply, the wall breaks down. The good seems to seep into his apartment as he rescues his better half. The video ends with one Lambert, walking down a sun-drenched street, seeming to be at peace with himself.

Geez, Monica, you had to go there. It seems that the veteran R&B singer went all the way with her "just you wait until I leave you" theme in "Until It's Gone," the Diane Martel-helmed music video to her latest song from forthcoming "New Life." It's as though she hooked up with the same melodrama machine that pumped out Lil Wayne's soap-operatic "How to Love," complete with cheating men and hospital scenes of mourning. There's at least this grand PSA: don't forget to buckle your seatbelt. "New Life" is due on Dec. 15, in time for Christmas, and is preceded by...

Jennifer Hudson’s “No One Gonna Love You” is full of fake-outs. Some of them sweet, some of them a little less so. The Diane Martel-directed video starts with Hudson wanted a little sumthin-sumthin from her man, but he leaves their bed anyway, which would put any girl in a bad mood, you know what I’m saying? Then, to compound matters, he doesn’t remember that it’s there anniversary. Jennifer Hudson wakes up with gloomy mood in a music video for her latest single "No One Gonna Love You". The former contestant of "American Idol" is upset with her man because when she mentions about celebrating their anniversary together, he just shrugs it off.
Beside focusing on the love story, the clip also features J-Hud strutting her stuff in a chair-dance sequence. "This is the first time that I've had the chance to dance," she said. "But it was probably the part I anticipated the most and I actually had a lot of fun. I thought I accomplished it. You be the judge."
The music video is directed by Diane Martel and has Hassan Johnson as her love interest. The song, meanwhile, is lifted from Jennifer's latest studio installment "I Remember Me" which has been in stores since earlier this year.

You can take the girl out of Queens, but you can't take the Queens out of the girl. Nicki Minaj premiered her stripped-down video for "Right Thru Me" on MTV Wednesday (October 27), and it is quite a departure from her boisterous "Check It Out" video that debuted Tuesday. Instead of blond hair and futuristic outfits, Nicki looks like she's about to walk down Jamaica Avenue in 50 Cent's hometown.
The opening frame of "Right Thru Me" shows Nicki arguing in a kitchen with a man that seems to be her boyfriend. The two argue about whether he's "disrespecting her" by talking behind her back, and he threatens to leave after the Mc breaks a glass in frustration. Then Nicki, sporting black wavy hair and pink fingernails, cuddles her gent, apologizes for overreacting and asks him to stay.

Yes, from her vast collection of neon wigs to her closet full of skintight outfits, Nicki is rarely, if ever, subtle. But in her upcoming video for "Right Thru Me," all of that has changed. Gone are the Kool-Aid accoutrements and Harajuku Barbie getups, replaced instead with a side of the rapper most of her fans have never seen before: a sensitive, softer one.
