"Invincible" season 2 just wrapped (read our review here). While the long gap after season 1 slowed down the excitement, the second season kept the show's quality soaring higher than a Viltrumite.
"Invincible" may stream on Prime Video, but its origin story lies at Image Comics. Image was founded in 1992 as counter-programming to the Marvel/DC comics duopoly; the founders included '90s comic superstars like Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, and Jim Lee (the man who rebranded the X-Men for the '90s). The "I" on Invincible's costume? It doesn't just stand for "Invincible," but "Image" too.
At Marvel and DC, the publishers own the characters and cycle out writers/artists at the popular ones. Image, on the other hand, specializes in creator-owned comics where writers and artists retain authority. That's why "Invincible" was personally created by Robert Kirkman, author of the comics. It took Marvel Studios three Spider-Man movies to set up Tom Holland as the hero of his own film — a film that still hasn't materialized. Both producer Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige have seemingly confirmed a fourth Spider-Man movie starring the British actor is forthcoming, but just what form this will take and when it will arrive remain unclear. Which is a shame because, as mentioned, Holland has yet to really be the star of his own Spidey flick.
Debuting in "Captain America: Civil War," Holland went on to front three solo Spider-Man outings, but he always seemed to play second fiddle to either MCU world-building or other well-established MCU characters. But at the end of 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home," Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man was seemingly positioned to finally become the hero of his own story moving forward. In 1992, comic book writer and artist Todd McFarlane created a new superhero character called Spawn. Five years later, director Mark A.Z. Dippé and screenwriter Alan B. McElroy brought Spawn to the screen in a PG-13 rated movie that didn’t go over well with a lot of fans. There were rumblings of a sequel for years after that, but nothing ever happened. Back around 2005, McFarlane announced he was going to make sure a new Spawn movie was going to be made, even if he had to produce, direct, and finance it himself. For nearly twenty years, he has been slowly pushing that project forward… but there is some level of hope that we might finally see the new Spawn sometime in 2025, so we figured we should put together a list of Everything We Know About the Spawn Reboot.

The influence of Todd McFarlane can be felt wherever you look in current entertainment. Whether it’s the phenomenal toys that bear a striking resemblance to their real-life counterparts or characters like Venom appearing in his third film venture, it’s hard not to take note. McFarlane created some of the best characters of the 90s in both Venom and Spawn. Heck, his design of Spider-Man is still one of the most memorable out there. And with his proposed Spawn film starring Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner languishing in development hell, you better believe we asked him about that!
It was an absolute pleasure to be able to talk with McFarlane about his varied career. While he was pretty reserved in regard to his future projects, he was a wealth of knowledge when it came to toys. We discussed how his company was able to improve toys as a whole,...

Todd McFarlane has said that 2024 will be the “make or break year” for getting another Spawn project off the ground. And while we have every right to be skeptical on the matter – McFarlane isn’t exactly the most reliable on this front – fans of the character and the 1997 movie may still hold out hope. But will Michael Jai White return for Spawn 2?
As it turns out, Michael Jai White doesn’t give Spawn all that much thought, although he could potentially consider a return. “I really don’t think much about the sequel. If I was invited to do it, then I’d apply myself toward it, but I mean, I think it’s been talked about for a very long time. And it seems that Todd McFarlane has been leading that conversation.” But for White, there would have to be some conditions if he would suit up again. “I...

For a guy that looks like a clear rip-off of Batman and Spider-Man, Spawn has some convoluted backstory. And in the decades since the character first appeared in the original launch of Image Comics, his mythos have only grown more overwrought, with each addition including ever more players in a war between Heaven and Hell.
It may not (yet) involve cyborg gorillas like Cy-Gor or any number of angels and demons who trouble the late Al Simmons, but the saga of a Spawn reboot on the big screen has similarly had a myriad of twists and turns. In 2019, Spawn creator and action figure magnate Todd McFarlane announced a deal with Blumhouse, masters of the B-movie hit. As previously reported here at Den of Geek, Blumhouse gave McFarlane the means to make the superhero movie of his dreams: a “dark, ugly two hours worth of movie” with “no joy.”

Sixteen years have passed since Spawn creator Todd McFarlane announced he was going to make sure a new Spawn movie was going to be made, even if he had to produce, direct, and finance it himself. Blumhouse Productions has been helping McFarlane develop the project since 2017, and even though he had written a script himself, they’ve also hired multiple screenwriters to do further work on the script. Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has said he’s hoping Spawn will be released sometime in 2025… and during a new interview with ComicBook.com, McFarlane said he considers 2024 to be the “make or break” year for Hollywood’s involvement with the reboot. If the movie doesn’t go into production this year, he’s turning to outside investors.
Here’s McFarlane’s quote: “2024 is gonna be my make or break anyways, right? Either I’m gonna give Hollywood the best chance to do it and,...

Todd McFarlane, creator of the demonic anti-hero Spawn, is still waiting to see a script emerge from a project that has been in development hell for years.
We’re sure that jokes have been made many times regarding the irony of a demonic superhero film project being trapped in development hell, so we’ll sidestep that opening and go straight for the lead: Todd McFarlane still hasn’t seen a script for Spawn. This is despite Jason Blum ‘promising’ that the film would arrive in 2025.
Back in October, even when the actors strike was still ongoing, Jason Blum stepped up to proclaim that “2025 is when Spawn is going to come out. I stand by that. I stand by that.” Off the back of such a certain statement, we imagine the internet is going to hold Mr Blum to that pledge. In turn, that means that Spawn's development timeline is going...

Another year, another non-update about that Spawn movie that Blumhouse and Todd McFarlane can’t seem to figure out. It’s been a pattern with this project for the past several years that small bits of news are followed by long periods of silence, so don’t get too excited.
Before we get into this latest little tidbit, here’s a brief refresher course…
Back in October of 2022, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane announced that Blumhouse was still on board the Spawn ship and that Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and Matthew Mixon had been hired the write the script. Additionally, at the time, Jamie Foxx was still attached to star as the title character.

Some names are instantly recognizable to fans outside of the realm of comic books. Stan Lee, Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, and Jack Kirby are just a few. Another to include on that roster is Robert Kirkman. Best known for creating The Walking Dead, Kirkman co-founded Skybound Entertainment and has been involved with hit comics, including Outcast and Invincible. The latter was turned into a series in 2021 featuring the voices of Steven Yeun, Gillian Jacobs, Sandra Oh, and J.K. Simmons, amongst dozens of other recognizable Hollywood actors. Now, after a long wait, the second season of Invincible is debuting on Prime Video (read our review).

In The Late Great, Primetimer staffers and contributors revisit shows that were cut short, but still cast a long shadow over the TV landscape.
As the comics-to-streaming pipeline continues to feed the insatiable television market with big-budget adaptations like The Sandman, Loki, and The Boys, overall fan and critical reception have crowned Prime Video’s Invincible king. That almost certainly has something to do with the series’ animated format, which enables its unrestrained exploration of sci-fi concepts and superhero action in a way that live-action television can’t replicate. It also helps that its unabashedly violent and big-hearted take embraces the teenage turmoil and sanguine attitude of Robert Kirkman’s Skybound/Image Comics series instead of softening its edge to court broader appeal. That commitment echoes an older Image animated series whose cult status keeps it in conversation among its modern adult animation contemporaries: Todd McFarlane’s Spawn.

Jason Blum is bringing the “Blumhouse edge” to the upcoming “Spawn” film adaptation.
During a press line for Blumhouse at New York Comic Con 2023 (per Screen Rant), Blum teased the “Spawn” movie currently in development at his eponymous production company.
“It’s going to be edgy and original as compared to other superhero movies,” he said. “It’s gonna definitely feel like the Blumhouse version of a superhero movie.”
Blumhouse Productions is best known for producing horror movies such as “M3gan,” “Get Out” and the “Paranormal Activity,” “Insidious” and “The Purge” film franchises.
Back in 2017, original comic creator Todd McFarlane announced that a new movie based on his human-turned-Hellspawn was in the works at Blumhouse. McFarlane, who is on board to write and direct the film, is also producing with Blum.
“We just signed [Jason Blum] yesterday,” McFarlane said in a video announcement at the time during San Diego Comic-Con. “No more theoretical … It’s coming.

It has been more than a quarter-century since we last saw Todd McFarlane’s Spawn on the big screen. With Blumhouse Productions attached to resurrect the Image Universe favorite, its founder and figurehead Jason Blum is promising that his studio’s trademarks will be injected into Spawn’s veins. So long as we don’t get a bunch of dancing Spawns at the premiere, that sounds fine to us…

Todd McFarlane has unveiled the upcoming figures based around the much-maligned Batman & Robin, which brought the franchise back to camp territory in a big way. And while the movie itself may not have the devoted fanbase of, say, any of the others, the figures themselves do kick some ice!
In a recent Instagram video, Todd McFarlane showed off the Batman & Robin figures of Batman, Robin, Batgirl, and Poison Ivy. Already in boxes and marked as “production pieces”, the figures offer pretty darn good likenesses of the actors: “big, bad George Clooney” (McFarlane’s words), Chris O’Donnell, Alicia Silverstone, and Uma Thurman. McFarlane also praised the details in the outfits themselves, particularly ogling Poison Ivy’s dry brush and makeup details. He did, however, stop short of pointing out the Bat-nipples, but don’t worry, they are indeed present.

The new Spawn movie is coming!
The long-awaited reboot of the film, which has been plagued by delays, is set to be released in 2025, according to Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse.
“2025 is when Spawn is going to come out,” he told ComicBook.com during the press junket for The Exorcist: Believer, doubling down on his earlier claims: “I stand by that. I stand by that.”
Jamie Foxx was set to play Spawn, but the reboot suffered several delays.

When the X-Men debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 1963, their superhero costumes looked a little more like school uniforms. The team at the time was made up of the characters Cyclops, Ice Man, Beast, Marvel Girl, and Angel, and they all wore a notable yellow-and-blue ensemble with hoods to partially cover their faces. "The Uncanny X-Men" also allowed creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby to skip over the bothersome task of having to invent a superhero origin story. Rather than a tale of cosmic rays, gamma radiation, spider-bites, or some other powers-granting conceit, the X-Men were merely born with their abilities. They are mutants.
When the X-Men universe expanded to include more and more characters, the blue-and-yellow ensembles gave way to a wide variety of outlandish costumes, each one adhering to the styles of the day. Those who read X-Men comics in the 1990s, for instance,...

While you probably couldn’t tell just by looking at the contemporary comic-book landscape, there was a point in time when the industry wasn’t dominated by super-heroes. From horror to erotica, comics used to be just as varied as other artforms before masks and spandex became the norm – something that was almost certainly influenced by the conservative comics code authority. Fortunately, there are some talented artists that manage to create genre-defying works of art within the confines of what readers are actually buying.

Earlier this year, we lost Lance Reddick, a brilliant actor and commanding presence in film, television, video games, and beyond. When he wasn’t tending to the needs of assassins in the John Wick franchise or hiding secrets about a zombie apocalypse in Netflix’s Resident Evil series, he voiced Commander Zavala for Bungie’s long-running first-person-shooter video game franchise, Destiny. Sadly, now that Reddick is no longer with us, Bungie must appoint his successor. Thankfully, beloved actor Keith David is stepping into Zavala’s reinforced boots.

As you may have heard, the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con International was not the usual Sdcc experience.
On July 14, the American actors’ union SAG-AFTRA joined their writing counterparts in the WGA by going on strike and picketing the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) for its refusal to grant them a fair deal. Since the details of the strike preclude actors and writers from promoting their union-backed films and TV shows, many of the planned panels, promotions, and guests at Comic-Con had to bow out.
The end result was a Con that very much resembled the event’s earlier days before it became a action item on the calendar for big studios like Marvel, DC, and others to showcase their upcoming blockbusters. And you know what? It was all still pretty cool!

The Spawn movie franchise has been plagued with stop/starts for the better part of 15 years. After an HBO animated series adaptation, 1997 brought Todd McFarlane’s Image Comics banner hero to the big screen to a less-than-stellar reaction. It has been a different world ever since and with the major takeover of comic book movies, it has been the ideal time for a reboot, especially with the proven success of a violence-filled R-rated superhero franchise like the Deadpool movies.
With the unfortunate cards dealt recently with Jamie Foxx’s health and now the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Todd McFarlane recently gave an uncertain update on the status of the Spawn reboot speaking with ScreenRant at the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con — an event usually reserved for the biggest and most exclusive news on big upcoming films, but the strikes have nearly all the studios skipping this year.

The announcer is blaring over the speaker system that Preview Night is about to begin at San Diego Comic-Con. In minutes, the floor will see tendrils of people spread down paths and alleyways, slowly at first then in a deluge, putting to rest any theory that a lack of actors would make people stay away from Comic-Con. People are here for cool collectible merch, and they will soon line up and jostle for it.
And Jim Lee, president, publisher and chief creative officer of DC Comics, is totally Ok with that. Lee is on the second floor of the DC booth, tucked in a back corner of the convention hall, taking in the colorful view of the floor.
“Comic-Con is the event of the year for us, and we wanted to basically show up for the fans,” Lee tells The Hollywood Reporter.

What’s going on with Blumhouse’s Spawn movie, you may be wondering? It’s been a pattern with this project that small bits of news are followed by long periods of radio silence, so it’s no surprise that it’s been almost a year since we’ve gotten an update. Let’s recap.
Back in October of last year, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane announced that Blumhouse was still on board the Spawn ship and that Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and Matthew Mixon had been hired the write the script. Additionally, at the time, Jamie Foxx was still attached to star as the title character.
It’s been a long hard road out of development hell with his brand new Spawn feature, which Todd McFarlane had originally planned to direct. It seems he’s stepped aside from those desires, however, with a new...

A new film based on the Image Comics character Spawn has been in development hell for a long, long time. Spawn creator Todd McFarlane first announced that it was in the works back in 2007. Blumhouse Productions got involved in 2017. Jamie Foxx signed on to play Spawn in 2018. But apparently they’ve had a lot of difficulty figuring out the script. Last year, it was announced that a trio of writers – Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (Captain America: Brave New World), and Matthew Mixom (Yesterday Was Everything) – were working on it. Of course, the writers strike has put a stop to any progress that was being made… but in a new interview with ComicBook.com, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has said he’s hoping Spawn will be released sometime in 2025.
Asked if there’s any hope for this new Spawn, Blum replied, “I would say you have a lot to hope for...

So it’s come to this: Spider-Man 10, technically. The future prophesied by many Hollywood alarmists, but now with more madness in the multi-verse (I cringe every time I hear it). Our prologue sees a super-powered Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) battling the iconic comic villain The Vulture, only to be interrupted by new variants like Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) and his pregnant wife Spider-Woman (Issa Rae) emerging from another universe to assist her. Come there be something a little nefarious with them?
We then catch up with the hero of the first film, Miles Morales, deep in the midst of anxiety about his secret identity being revealed to his parents. On top of this, when trailed by his own physics-bending villain The Spot (Jason Schwartzman)––who claims to have had a hand in Miles getting his powers––another complication arises as Gwen and Miles cross paths, again, across dimensions. These early...

It’s been nearly 25 years since a proper adaptation of Todd McFarlane‘s Spawn appeared on the big screen. The HBO animated series was nearly perfect in every way. Though Spawn was canceled following a huge cliffhanger, it showcased a unique perspective on heroism. It wasn’t just a mindless animated showed where he’d take down the bad guy of the week. Rather it was a dark noir story that touched on themes of morality, depression, and betrayal throughout its three-season run. The animated series did an incredible job of fleshing out Al Simmons. Needless to say, he remains one of the...

McFarlane Toys is resurrecting its classic Movie Manics line, complete with…practically no movie maniacs.
The lineup, which Todd McFarlane unveiled on Twitter, includes the Wicked Witch of the West, Bugs Bunny, Harry Potter, and Ted Lasso. Notice anything strange about this wave of Movie Maniacs? The Wicked Witch of the West is the only inclusion that even gets close to qualifying–she does threaten to kill a dog and has no problem lighting a scarecrow on fire. Bugs Bunny, Harry Potter and Ted Lasso, on the other hand, are straight-up protagonists, only one of which is even considered a major movie character.
In his Twitter post, McFarlane–who himself doesn’t seem terribly interested in the properties being tied into the once-defunct Movie Maniacs label–shows off each box and figure, hinting that the entire promotion is more of a plug for the 100th anniversary of Warner Bros. Each figure comes with a backdrop,...

Long before Funko and Neca came along, Todd McFarlane’s McFarlane Toys changed the game with its “Movie Maniacs” line, which gave us highly detailed action figures of our favorite horror icons for the very first time. Beginning in the late ’90s, the Movie Maniacs line grew to include all the greats, including Chucky, Pumpkinhead, Leatherface, Freddy and Jason.
As you may recall, Todd McFarlane had teased the return of the “Movie Maniacs” line a few years back, and today he has taken to Twitter to show off the brand new reboot line.
Unfortunately, it’s not exactly the “Movie Maniacs” line we remember…

February 16 marked the fifth anniversary of Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole’s “Black Panther.” Marvel Studios’ first Black-led superhero flick, starring the late Chadwick Boseman as the king of Wakanda, was seen as a watershed moment for Hollywood representation. With all the chatter about Marvel and DC films prioritizing diversity and inclusivity as a step forward for the caped sub-genre, the success of “Black Panther” was less a step forward and more a return to what was once the status quo generations prior.
Comic book and/or superhero movies fronted by Black actors, like the “Blade” trilogy and “Men in Black” series, once kept comic book features alive, only for Hollywood to declare them essentially whites-only as “Spider-Man” turned the genre into A-level tentpole IP.

Comic book fame could not prepare Todd McFarlane for music fans. “I found out that rock & roll groupies are way different than comic-book groupies,” says the man who created Spawn and illustrated one of Marvel’s most iconic Spider-Man covers ever. His success led Pearl Jam to ask him to direct their “Do the Evolution” video in 1998, and he’s since made clips for Korn, Ozzy Osbourne, and others.

HBO created the first adult animated series in 1997, but Spicy City, a dark cyberpunk anthology from Ralph Bakshi, has become a lost relic.
Animation is one of the most versatile mediums of storytelling and over the past decade it’s been able to shake the restricting baggage that animated content is purely for younger audiences. Animated series for adults are among some of the best dramas and comedies on television, especially those that lean into the limitlessness of the medium. Animated series like Primal, Castlevania, and Love, Death + Robots have been groundbreaking horror series that show what’s truly possible in animation. The abundance of streaming services means that ancient programs have been unearthed to “complete” certain streaming libraries and it’s always exciting when new audiences can experience older content, even those that are products of their time.

“Werewolf by Night” is here.
The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a midsized movie, running at just 53 minutes (it’s billed as a “Marvel Studios Special Presentation”), that explores the title character, who goes by the human name Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal). Jack is a monster hunter who, along with fellow hunters, is summoned to a mysterious mansion and tasked with bagging the most fearsome creature imaginable. Can he bring in the beast while also successfully concealing his true identity?
That last question looms over “Werewolf by Night.” But there is a bigger question still: does “Werewolf by Night” have a post-credits sequence?
No spoilers, but we will reveal whether or not “Werewolf by Night” has a post-credits scene, so if you don’t want to know, turn back now!

There’s something charmingly accessible about Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo. Talking to them, you never get the feeling that you’re talking to a multimedia titan of geek culture or one of the most beloved Batman artists of all time, respectively. It feels more like running into two guys tailgating outside an Ozzy Osborne show, inviting you to geek out with them about their comic art collection, shooting the breeze about the car they’re working on together, and periodically dropping preternatural draftsmanship wisdom sprinkled with comic art history. And then McFarlane will say something like, “I’m in the business of cool. Period,” and you suddenly remember that you’re talking to two of the biggest names to ever create comics and that they’re teaming up for a fresh Batman Spawn crossover that is likely to be one of the biggest books of the decade.

Who’s up for a game of superhero musical chairs? Blumhouse‘s Spawn is making moves today by revealing the new team of writers assigned to the long-gestating reboot. Signing their souls over to Satan to pen the screenplay is a trio of creators, including Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (Captain America: New World Order), and Matthew Mixom (Yesterday Was Everything).
Spawn creator Todd McFarlane expressed interest in relaunching the character on the silver screen in 2017. After making arrangements with Blumhouse and attaching Jamie Foxx to star, Spawn has experienced several delays in development. McFarlane wrote the script’s first draft and is interested in directing the feature. We hear that Silver, Spellman, and Mixom will draft a new screenplay based on McFarlane’s ideas. While McFarlane is still interested in occupying the director’s chair, he admits he might not be the right person for the job.

McFarlane created the character for Image comics in 1992 and has already written the first draft of the script. He also suggested he may no longer direct the Blumhouse production.

“If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers?” McFarlane tells The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news. “The answer is, ‘of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.

As promised, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane dropped some big news on the planned Spawn movie reboot this afternoon, ending a long period of radio silence on the project.
THR reports that Blumhouse is still on board the ship, with Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and Matthew Mixon now writing the script.
THR also notes, “Jamie Foxx remains attached to star as the anti-hero, who was first introduced in the comics in 1992, with McFarlane among the film’s producers.”
Jeremy Renner had previously been attached to co-star alongside Jamie Foxx, but THR’s report indicates that Renner’s involvement in the film is up in the air at the moment.
It’s been a long hard road out of development hell with his brand new Spawn feature, which Todd McFarlane had originally planned to direct. It seems he’s stepped aside from those desires, however, with...
