Sydney, June 27 (Ians) An aggressive China started their quest to end a 12-year title drought at the Fiba Women’s Basketball Asia Cup with a crushing 89-44 victory over Lebanon, here.
After finishing runners-up at last year’s World Cup, world No.2 China returned to Sydney Olympic Park in style as they eye winning Asia’s continental championship for the first time since 2011, reports Xinhua.
Towering Han Xu was unstoppable inside the paint to finish with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Li Meng, who starred at last year’s World Cup, had 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds.
China were made to work early against underdogs Lebanon, who won the Asia Cup Division B in 2021 to claim a berth in this year’s main draw.
Lebanon, ranked 44th in the world, were inspired by their best player Rebecca Akl, who scored nine early points in a tight first quarter.

Though there was no explicit theme across its broad variety of films, much of the international competition at the 2023 Jeonju International Film Festival seemed to address a particular type of alienation in contemporary society. A real standout was Chinese filmmaker Wu Lang’s debut feature, Absence, which premiered earlier this year at Berlinale. Starring frequent Tsai Ming-Liang collaborator Lee Kang-sheng as Han Jiangyu, a man attempting to build a new life with his estranged partner (Li Meng) and the child (Liang Wangling) who only recently learned of his existence following a 10-year prison stint, it owes a clear debt to Tsai’s work, with elements of Jia Zhang-ke also noticeable in its DNA.
As the film’s central story proceeds, seemingly dissolving into obscure fragments following a relatively linear, economical opening stretch, Wu’s richly textured imagery turns the decaying urban environment of modern-day China into a lyrical evocation of...

Taking place between March 29 and April 9 at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Film at Lincoln Center, the 52nd edition of New Directors/New Films will commence with Savanah Leaf’s superb debut (and Sundance stand-out) Earth Mama, close with Vuk Lungolov-Klotz’s Mutt (winner of Best Actor at Sundance), and in-between showcase films from 41 directors––27 features, 11 shorts, and (I just counted) most continents.
So says La Frances Hui, Curator at MoMA’s Department of Film and Nd/Nf’s Co-chair: “This geographically diverse lineup brings together new directors from all over the world presenting works that make bold and creative statements on everything from identity and family to political repression and postcolonial discourse. The power of cinema to inspire imagination and explore perspectives is evident in the wide range of styles, ideas, and voices in the selection.”

Sydney, Oct 1 (Ians) The United States claimed their fourth Fiba World Cup title in a row after an 83-61 victory over China in the final here on Saturday.
Despite the defeat, the Chinese team has already tied its best record at the quadrennial tournament. It also finished runner-up at the formerly known Fiba World Championship for Women in 1994.
Earlier in the group stage, China lost to the United States 77-63.
With leading scorer Li Meng still sidelined for the final, China got a huge help in the first quarter from Wang Siyu and Li Yueru, who combined for all 13 points during the stretch, and trailed by five points at the quarter’s end, reports Xinhua.
Wu Tongtong swept China’s first nine points in the second period, but a more balanced USA gradually took the upper hand with different players hitting the scoreboard.

Chang Tso-chi’s new film “Synapses” focuses on the three generations of the Zhang family, who live together in a soon-to-be demolished house. As the father is diagnosed with early stages of dementia, the daughter returns home from a lengthy prison stint. The youngest of the grandsons is trying to make sense of it all and makes friends with a homeless man; the long-suffering grandmother is committed to keeping the family together, but cracks when her husband goes off to visit a former lover.
Do you still follow your old method of letting the actors live together in a house before you start shooting?
Yes, always. Besides Li Meng [who plays the daughter], most of the actors had little experience. So I did this to let them get close to each other and get along as a ‘family’.
And again, you didn’t let them read the full screenplay?
Same as always.

Wild land development and the fast changing of social and physical landscape of China has been for a long time the subject of choice of many Chinese social realism indie movies. It is indeed a hot topic and it is where the big economic divide becomes truly evident.
First time director Cathy Yan, who grew up in Us, has found a lighter way to dish out the same old stew (… or is it the same old stew?) with “Dead Pigs”, which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and is produced by Jia Zhangke, a man who knows a thing or two about Chinese fast-paced development. The film is lightly based on an incident that occurred in 2013, when more than 16,000 dead pigs were found floating on the Huangpu, the river flowing through Shanghai.
