Even if you walked away from "The Super Mario Bros." disappointed in the flimsy story, there's one element that succeeded in spite of the movie's shortcomings: Jack Black as the diabolical villain Bowser. The "School of Rock" star brought his magnificent voice to the spike-shelled bad guy who has always been tormenting Mario, Luigi, Peach, the Mushroom Kingdom, and beyond. Black even got to belt out a ballad about Bowser's love for Peach in a scene-stealing musical sequence that is easily the best part of the entire movie. Now, he's gearing up to join another promising video game movie.
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. Pictures, Vertigo, and Legendary are close to starting production on the "Minecraft" movie, adapting the hit sandbox world video game from Mojang Studios, and Jack Black is taking one of the lead roles alongside "Aquaman" star Jason Momoa.

Didn't you hear? Video game adaptations are good now! Or, if not that, then they're no longer "cursed" to fail on principle.
Thanks to movies like "Detective Pikachu" and HBO's "The Last of Us," it's open season on your favorite gaming properties in Hollywood. Be it "Street Fighter," "Tomb Raider," or "Fallout," studios are snatching up the screen rights to everything from vintage fighting games to modern role-playing sensations. Even titles that proved notoriously resistant to reinterpretations in the past, like "Bioshock," are being resurrected as part of this newfound fad.
The film version of "Minecraft" — Mojang Studios' incredibly popular survival sandbox game — has similarly gone through multiple permutations since Warner Bros. announced the project in 2014. It's not too surprising when you think about it. There's no right or wrong way to play; the game's appeal lies firmly in the freedom to whittle away the hours battling Creepers, amassing hordes of resources,...

Rose McGowan told The New York Times in an interview on Saturday that she was offered $1 million in hush money if she signed a nondisclosure agreement that would have prevented her from speaking out against disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein.
The offer from “someone close to Mr. Weinstein,” according to the Times, came just as several women were about to come forward with their claims of sexual misconduct against the Hollywood producer in an exposé also published by the newspaper.
McGowan — who revealed earlier this month that she was allegedly raped by Weinstein — said she considered the offer, but countered with $6 million.

From Assassin’s Creed to The Witcher, via Mass Effect, Minecraft and maybe more Warcraft...
Latest update: Uncharted delayed.
In the years since Den Of Geek first sprung into existence, we’ve consistently kept an eye on the videogames that have been touted for the big screen treatment. We’ve tried to list them all in a big article a few times before, and it feels like the time has come to pull a new version together.
If we haven’t heard anything about a certain videogame movie in two years or more, it seems safe to assume that it’s quietly been binned. That’s why you won’t find the likes of BioShock, Devil May Cry, Far Cry, Gears Of War, Halo, Heavy Rain and Rollercoaster Tycoon on this list. If we get proven wrong on any of those, we’ll update this article as more information comes to light.

If the Minecraft movie is even half as popular as the video game, then Mojang will have a true, ahem, blockbuster on its hands. As anticipation builds for Minecraft's silver screen debut, we've decided to dig around for some more information.
From potential release dates and budgets, to storylines, directors and producers, here's everything we know about the Minecraft movie so far.
What's the Minecraft movie all about?
Plot details are thin on the ground, but Mojang COO Vu Bui told The Guardian that it will tell one of the countless possible stories from Minecraft's build-it-yourself game world. "When coming up with a story, we want to make sure it is just a story within Minecraft, as opposed to the story within Minecraft," he said.
Elaborating on his comments, Bui said that the company doesn't want to discourage players by coming up with an official story of the Minecraft universe.

Back in October, we brought you the news that Night At The Museum director Shawn Levy had signed on to adapt the ridiculously popular videogame, Minecraft. At the time, the idea of a filmmaker whose resume is dotted with dramedies and family-friendly fare seemed an unusual choice to helm the pic. Alas, our earlier doubts have now been proven correct, as Variety reports that Levy has vacated the director’s chair.
According to sources, the simple reason why Levy – and writers Kieran and Michelle Mulroney – left is down to creative differences. The premise of the open-world game involves players crafting their own avatar before they set about constructing entire worlds from building blocks to assist them on their missions. It’s a slow-burning concept that lends itself to countless interpretations, which is thought to be the reason Levy and co. have abandoned ship.

A Mojang executive recently said that the Minecraft film is unlikely to arrive before 2017.
Chief operating officer Vu Bui also emphasised that the film just tells one of the countless possible stories from Minecraft's build-it-yourself world.
Talks between Warner Bros and Mojang about a Minecraft film were first announced in February.
Microsoft recently purchased Minecraft and Mojang for $2.5bn.

Filmmaker Shawn Levy ("Night at the Museum," "Real Steel") has signed on to develop and direct the film adaptation of the highly popular open world video game "Minecraft" for Warner Bros. Pictures.
Officially launched in 2011, the project allows players to use cubes to build walls to protect them from evil nocturnal monsters in a world known as The Nether. The game has since evoled though with players crafting astounding creations.
The official site for the game has over 100 million registered users, the XBox version alone has sold over 10 million copies.
The project does not have a screenwriter attached at this time. Roy Lee and Jill Sobel Messick are producing.

Warner Bros. are on an announcement streak! Following yesterday’s headline-grabbing extravaganza, during which the studio outlined their collaborative plans with DC Comics, it seems they’re now deep in negotiations for another adaptation. This time, they’re not turning to the pages of a comic or novel for inspiration, instead, they’re tapping the video game market to bring a Minecraft live-action pic to the big screen.
Now, this news may seem like old hat, because the project was given the greenlight eons ago, but now we’ve got an update; Deadline has it on good authority that the studio are courting Shawn Levy for the director’s chair.

Director Shawn Levy may be taking some time off from the "Night at the Museum" franchise to conquer "Minecraft" Warner Bros. is in talks with the director to develop a film version of the hit videogame which the studio is hoping will turn into a mult-film property like their "Lego Movie" series, according to Deadline. In the game, players use their own avatars to build, and destroy, cube structures in an open world filled with nocturnal creatures such as zombies, vampires and giant spiders. The game was first release in 2009 for PC, but has since expanded to other platforms, and features multiplayer options. While little is known about the plot pf the "Minecraft" movie, it will produced by Jill Messick ("Mean Girls") and Roy Lee, who helped guide "The Lego Movie" to massive success. In addition to the "Night at the Museum" films, Levy has directed "Real Steel," "Date Night,...

Exclusive: Warner Bros is in talks with Shawn Levy to develop to direct Minecraft, the hot video game franchise that Warner Bros acquired in February on the heels of the studio’s success with The Lego Movie. The game was created by Swedish indie developer Mojang Ab (mojang means “gadget” in Swedish), and the film is being produced by Roy Lee through his Vertigo banner along with Jill Messick. Lee produced The Lego Movie with Dan Lin, which has sequels and spinoffs planned. Like that film, Minecraft provides a brand name and a blank canvas on which to launch a multiple audience quadrant film franchise. The Xbox version of the game has already sold well over 10 million copies.

Bad Judge has found a new showrunner: Betsy Thomas has been tapped to takeover duties for Liz Brixius, who exited the new NBC comedy earlier this month, EW has confirmed.

Thomas (Whitney, My Boys) joined the comedy after four episodes had been filmed, but the showrunner swap isn’t expected to impact the show’s Oct. 2 (9 p.m. on NBC) launch, according to Deadline,...

Warner Bros doesn’t seem to have Sony’s problems with franchising after the success of Lord & Miller’s The Lego Movie. They seem to have found a way to compare apples to apples and tapped Lego producers Roy Lee and Jill Messick to do the same for Minecraft.
Minecraft, in case you missed it, is the game of construction and resource management that has a retro-blocky look. The open world sandbox game launched in 2011 and has over 100 million active players to date. It’s gameplay is free form and not really goals based, so it makes total sense that after acquiring this property, some of the Lego people are involved.

Oh Minecraft, I know thee well. I resisted your pull up until my youngest asked me to build her a castle and I was hooked. You see, Minecraft is a game (for the three of you who may not know) where you’re dropped into a world and you build things with various types of blocks. There are multiple ways you can play the game and you could encounter friends (networked players) or foes that could do you harm. This widely popular game is about to get the movie adaptation treatment from Warner Bros.
According to Deadline, Mojang Ab has sold the rights to Warner Bros. for a live action movie from The Lego Movie producer, Roy Lee, and producer, Jill Messick (Mean Girls). I cannot actually picture what a live action Minecraft would look like when its major feature is that of blocks, but I’m willing to stay positive.

The somewhat universal truth of all video game adaptations is that they usually end up bad. This grand tradition of failure started with 1993’s abysmal “Super Mario Bros” and will see it’s latest entry hit theaters next month in the form of the Aaron Paul-starring “Need For Speed.” No doubt emboldened by their bonafide hit “The Lego Movie,” Warner Bros will be the next studio to take a crack at converting gamers into theatergoers with an adaptation of the similarly youth-skewing “Minecraft.” Deadline reports the studio has acquired the rights to the indie blockbuster game with “The Lego Movie” producer Roy Lee behind the project alongside Jill Messick (“Hot Rod” and “Mean Girls”). Despite Lee’s involvement, the sandbox — or “open world” — game is being eyed as a live-action affair. Though we’re still in the early days of the project, the studio has apparently garnered “huge interest from writers and filmmakers” already.

With over 100 million users, Mineraft is one of the biggest video game franchises currently on the market, so it probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to learn that it is now being brought to the big screen. Warner Bros. have acquired the rights to the popular game from Swedish developer Mojang Ab, and a live-action version is now in the works.
Of course, following the huge success of The Lego Movie (which has so far earned over $280 million worldwide), it really shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that the studio would now set their sights on an equally marketable new franchise.

It's pretty easy to guess what the big conversation in development offices all over town has been for the last few weeks, since the moment "The Lego Movie" hit theaters with nuclear force. Right now, executives at every studio are asking their kids, "What do you like to play with?" And I am willing to bet that they are all hearing the exact same word in response. "Minecraft." At this point in the life of my own kids, computer games are not an option, especially if there is any part of those games that can be used to communicate with them from other people. Even so, thanks to their friends, they are just as "Minecraft" crazy as the kids who are actually playing it. The game was developed as an indie title, and it's a building creative game, not unlike Lego. The difference is that they're building using blocks in a digital world.

We all enjoyed "Mean Girls," the 2004 hit starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert. And now, we're in for a treat as New Line Cinema is preparing for the sorta, quasi-sequel to be called "Mean Moms."
It kinda makes sense right? The mean girls are now grown-up and they became mean moms.

Your Child.s Future." Her 2002 book "Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence" was the basis of the "Mean Girls" film.
The follow-up explores what happens to Queen Bees and Wannabes when they grow up. Here's a description of the book from Amazon:

The latest set of mean girls aren't girls at all, they're moms. Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert had their turn as mean girls, but now it's time for "Mean Moms."
New Line Cinema has tapped Beth McCarthy-Miller ("Saturday Night Live") to adapt "Queen Bee Moms And King Pin Dads: Dealing With The Parents, Teachers, Coaches, and Counselors Who Can Make — or Break — Your Child’s Future" -- a book by Rosalind Wiseman, whose "Queen Bees and Wannabes" was the inspiration for the "Mean Girls" movie, Deadline reports.
The film adaptation of Wiseman's 2006 book focuses on a mother who encounters some grown-up mean girls in the form of suburban moms. "Mean Moms" will be produced by Jill Messick with Offspring Entertainment, according to Deadline.
While McCarthy-Miller served as a director for "SNL," she had a chance to work with "Mean Girls" stars Tina Fey and Tim Meadows.

One of my favorite things to do when a show comes to a conclusion – whether natural or forced – is to track what happens to the stars afterward, seeing what jobs they might be interested in. With Private Practice over and done with, Kate Walsh has been getting plenty of pilot offers, which isn’t much of a surprise. What might surprise some of you is she’s getting more than enough comedy pilot offers. In fact, NBC is zeroing in on her as we speak for the lead role in its comedy pilot produced by none other than Will Ferrell via his and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Prods, as well as Anne Heche. Now, doesn’t that just seem like an unlikely combination of individuals?
It’s actually not that out of the ordinary when you pull back for a second and look at things from a different vantage point.
