Jason Jack Miller continues his fascinating exploration of ancient Appalachian magic, the power of music, and the war for a man’s soul with The Revelations of Preston Black, the third book in his “Murder Ballads and Whiskey” series.
If you haven’t read the first two in that series, The Devil and Preston Black and Hellbender, I strongly urge that you do so. Revelations works just fine as a stand-alone novel, but the events covered here are deeply entwined in those first two books. You’ll appreciate what’s going on here more, and you’ll thank me for introducing you not to just one good book, but a whole trifecta.
The events of this book kick off when touring musician Preston Black, on stage with his creative partner and lover Katy Stefanic, references a deal with the devil. As we all know, demonic references span music history from...

Family feuds are a huge part of the history and folklore of this country. The Hatfield and McCoy families alone have accounted for endless books, television shows and punch lines. People outside the feuds may see them as pointless and silly, but to those deeply entangled in them, they are a matter of life and death. They often start over matters like a piece of land or a broken relationship; important things, yes, but usually not worth the violence, heartbreak and bloodshed that stains their names for years and generations to follow.
Henry Collins is more than happy to stay out of the flap that's tied his family to the Lewis clan for longer than he can remember. He's fuzzy on the details - somebody in his family ended up with something that a Lewis wanted once upon a time - but he's not sure that waiting around for the...

Cold Snap by Grant Riley Seven men take refuge in a small town bar with a freak blizzard hits. Seven men brought together by chance and bound by fate. 1. Jack Miller pushed through the swinging door of The Dive and had to force it shut against the howling winds behind him. He stood for a moment just inside the doorway and let the warmth of the bar wash the ice from his veins and took a moment to reflect on how sudden the blizzard outside had h…...

I know our favorite holiday has passed, and now it's all commercialism and Christmas carols unless you want to pull a Tobe Hooper at Sears, but there are a few gift ideas that might be really appreciated if found in those black stockings hanging by the fireplace Christmas morning.
1. First is the trilogy of Zombie Haiku, Werewolf Haiku and Vampire Haiku, all written by Ryan Mecum and published by How Books. The werewolf book tells the tale of a postman after he has been bitten by a "rabid" dog and his both frightening and hilarious degeneration into a werewolf. A couple of examples:
"If you think tacos
are hard for you to digest,
try passing chipmunks."
Or
"In conversation,
burping up a severed toe
can make things awkward."
The vampire haiku book tells the tale of one William Butten, who was "changed" by a mysterious woman on board a ship...
