New Delhi, Aug 12 (Ians) The cult classic ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ which was released four decades ago, in 1983, stands as an enduring testament to the power of satire and humour, coupled with social commentary on corruption and media, in the Indian cinema.
Directed by Kundan Shah, and starring an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah, late Satish Kaushik, Bhakti Barve and Neena Gupta, the movie was a dark satire on the rampant corruption in Indian politics, bureaucracy, news media and business.
It still remains a timeless classic because of its razor-sharp wit and incisive take on corruption, politics, and societal hypocrisy.
Produced by National Film Development Corporation of India (Nfdc), the film’s narrative revolves around the misadventures of two bumbling photographers, Vinod Chopra (played by Naseeruddin), and Sudhir Mishra (played by Ravi).

Mumbai, Aug 7 (Ians) Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap, whose films like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Ugly’, ‘Dev.D’, ‘Black Friday’ and others have strengthened the parallel cinema in India and have cultivated an enormous fan base, is set to visit the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Iffm) as his upcoming film ‘Kennedy’ has been selected as the closing film at the festival.
Kashyap, who is often credited as the poster boy of the present day indie cinema in India, shared that he had the idea of ‘Kennedy’ brewing inside him for 20 years but it only got materialised when the pandemic hit the world. In a way, the pandemic became the perfect physical setting for Kashyap’s story as he wanted to give it a very “comic book” kind of a spin to the story.

In a politically charged climate, rumors can often become deadly. Hate trumps everything else, and people have to pay the price for their honesty and goodwill. Sudhir Mishra’s Afwaah weaves a provocative story around this pervasive politics of hate and tries to satirize the situation through the motif of rumors.
The plot begins by showing us the characters placed nicely in their surroundings. Rahab Khan is an entrepreneur running a telecom company. Having returned from abroad, he plans to stay in India to expand his business. Vicky Singh is an up-and-coming politician who is on his way to forming an alliance with a powerful minister by marrying his daughter Nivedita. One fateful night, Rahab gets embroiled in local politics when Nivedita elopes, and Rahab helps coincidentally, saving her from Vicky’s goons. Rumors spread around town about him having forcefully taken Nivedita, and the matter took on a religious color.

New Delhi, June 26 (Ians) For someone who has worked with the likes of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Jagjit Singh and has contributed to the soundtracks of popular movies including ‘Page 3’, ‘The Body’ and the recently released Nawazuddin Siddiqui-Bhumi Pednekar starrer ‘Afwaah’, the paradigm shift in Hindi film music is hard to ignore.
Music composer Shamir Tandon points out, “Now, films have fewer songs and there is no lip-synching. In fact, some films are songless. There are not many situations that warrant a music number. This is a new thing for me, so I have been doing a lot of research and studying for this role.”
Talking about his learning process: “There are many technical terms that I am learning for my role. I have been observing banking-related activities, studying share markets so that when I am on the sets it is easy for me to get into the character.”

Afwaah
Sudhir Mishra is back in form with a film that has a lot of unexplored anger and resentment swimming underneath. The surface tension is killing Nivi, the conflicted fiancée of a bigoted political opportunist, who must take a life-changing call: remain a cow in her ambitious husband’s shed or run. Nivi chooses the latter option.
In Afwaah, Sudhir cranes his neck out of a truck that is probably carrying contraband goods. We suspect it to be one thing, but it turns out to be donkeys which come out braying at the end. This is the only humorous moment in a film that is grim tense and ceaselessly exploratory and never preachy.
In the smoothly political language of an auteur on a night out for dark adventures, Sudhir Mishra writes out a celluloid exposition on religious intolerance and political opportunism. Sumeet Vyas is pitch-perfect as the roguish political leader...

Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap is back in Cannes with thriller “Kennedy,” starring Rahul Bhat in the title role.
The film, which also stars Sunny Leone, will play in the Midnight Screenings strand of the festival. Several films directed by Kashyap have played at Cannes, including “Psycho Raman” (2016), “Ugly” (2013), “Bombay Talkies” (2013) and “Gangs of Wasseypur” (2012). In addition, several films produced by him have made it to the Croisette, including “Masaan” (2015), “The Lunchbox” (2013), “Monsoon Shootout” (2013), “The Congress” (2013) and “Udaan” (2010).
The plot of “Kennedy” is being kept under wraps at the moment. “Kennedy is a ghost in the system looking for redemption,” is how Kashyap describes the film to Variety.
The filmmaker says that the character of Kennedy has been an obsession with him for years and was born when fellow Indian filmmaker Sudhir Mishra hired him to write a cop story set in the 1980s. That film never got made but the character stayed with Kashyap.

Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, who recently kickstarted the shoot of her upcoming film ‘The Crew’, has shared that she likes to keep a healthy mix of mainstream and off-beat films in her filmography and that her titular role in ‘Chameli’ is a testament to that.
‘Chameli’, which was released almost 2 decades ago, was directed by Sudhir Mishra, and saw Kareena playing the role of a sex worker – a brave choice for an actor in that era. The film received many accolades for its storytelling and Kareena’s performance and proved to be a milestone in her career.
Talking about making brave choices, Kareena told Ians: “I have always been a risk-taker and it’s because of my passion for acting. That’s the reason behind me doing a ‘Golmaal’ and an off-beat film like ‘Omkara’, a ‘Yuva’ or a ‘Chameli’.”

After “Mulk” (2018), “Article 15” (2019), “Thappad” (2020) and “Anek” (2022), filmmaker Anubhav Sinha is back with “Bheed,” another hard-hitting film that shines a light on the fabric of Indian society.
The film is set during the 2020 Indian pandemic lockdown and tells the poignant story of migrant workers stranded without basic necessities while trying to go home to their villages. Shot in black and white, it is deliberately evocative of the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent into India and Pakistan when people were uprooted from their homes in the largest migration in history.
“When the pandemic hit, people were seeking help on Twitter. Everybody had different strengths so we were helping each other and, and I really got sucked into it. And that was the time when I felt that this film had to be made, this period of time has to be recorded, and I didn’t want it to be just a Coronavirus film,...

New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram, March 13 (Ians) M.M. Keeravani today is being hailed as one of the greatest music composers of Tollywood, but he earned his early spurs in K. Balachander’s 1991 Tamil movie, ‘Azhagan’ (Handsome), starring Mammootty and Bhanupriya. In the credit lines, he was known as Maragathamani.
In the same year, Keeravani, using the same identity, composed the music for celebrated filmmaker I.V. Sasi’s hit movie ‘Neelagiri’, also starring Mammooty. And in the year that followed, he gave the music for ‘Soorya Manasam’, the Sowcar Janaki-Mammootty film where the latter plays a mentally challenged man.
In the meantime, he continued with Telugu and Tamil films, venturing onto Kannada, where he did not change his name, as he did yet again, this time to M.M. Kreem, when he scored the music for ‘Criminal’, Mahesh Bhatt’s 1995 Telugu-Hindi bilingual thriller based on ‘The Fugitive’ and starring Nagarjuna, Ramya Krishna and Manisha Koirala.

Bangladeshi auteur Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s “Saturday Afternoon,” based on the same incident, was recently cleared for release after a four-year struggle with the Bangladesh Film Censor Board.
Next up is Sudhir Mishra’s thriller “Afwaah,” starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bhumi Pednekar, Sumeet Vyas and Sharib Hashmi.

The burning and very current topic of radicalization of Indian youth is the core subject of Harshad Nalawade’s “Follower.”
The film has its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Focus: The Shape of Things to Come? strand that asks if the institutional success of what used to be right-wing Hindu nationalist groups but are now mainstream, and the persecution of dissenting voices, is a sign of the shape of things to come.
The project was a work-in-progress lab selection at South Asia’s top film market, Film Bazaar, in 2021, and participated in the Film Bazaar Goes to Cannes initiative at the Marche du Film in 2022.
The film follows Raghavendra, a young man with a technical degree who unwillingly works in the family gift shop. A few incidents draw him toward a charismatic Hindu leader and he becomes a meagrely paid keyboard warrior for a radical online outlet.

Veteran Indian filmmaker Sudhir Mishra’s latest venture is “Tanaav,” the Indian adaptation of Israeli global hit “Fauda.” The series is transposed from Israel and Palestine to the troubled area that is Kashmir and tells the story of a Special Covert Ops Unit.
” ‘Fauda’ is about two countries, Israel and Palestine and it is about two religions. We didn’t want to do that. This is not about religion. This is not about Hindu versus Muslim. This is India versus, let’s say, terrorism or another kind of extreme ideology,” Mishra told Variety.
About the decision to set it in Kashmir, Mishra says that the series needed to be in a “disturbed zone” and that he’s been familiar with Kashmir for years and tried to move away from the cliched representation of the state and treated it in a “nuanced, interesting way.”
