Produced by Naomi Kawase with the help of Nara International Film Festival, “Beyond the Fog” is the second feature by Daichi Murase, and has already had a successful festival run, premiering in San Sebastian and now finding its place at Busan.
Beyond the Fog is screening at Busan International Film Festival
The slow-burn, almost tiptoeing-around-its-characters story takes place in a remote mountain village, in Japan. The village was once popular, but as tourism declined so did the area and the inn that the story revolves around. Currently, it is run by Shige and Saki, his daughter-in-law, since her husband has moved away from the area, as much as from her and their 12-year-old daughter, Ihika. Ihika is quite close to her grandfather, which makes her life even more difficult when the signs of senility become more intense. One day, Shige disappears, and the family, and particularly Saki, are forced to...

Based on his own, autobiographical novel “Chibusa ni Ka”, Shin Adachi’s “A Beloved Wife” is an amalgam of genres that paints a rather realistic portrait of modern relationships, although somewhat exaggerated for comedic reasons.
“A Beloved Wife” is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival 2020
Gota, much like Adachi after the success of “100 Yen Love” is a script-writer that had a success in the past, but now does not seem to get any break. This failure of his has put a rather significant toll on his wife, Chika, who is the sole earner of their household. Chika is rather frustrated due to his inability to earn and does not lose any chance to grind him about the fact, with her nagging being almost constant, to the frustration of their little daughter,...

“Fuku-chan of FukuFuku Flats” is a quirky comedy with a heart-warming spirit. The piece was distributed rather well for such a small film, but the director did not ever really managed to establish himself, managing to shoot only one movie after this, “Only 4 You” back in 2015.
The story is rather simple. The lead character, Fuku-chan (Miyuki Oshima), is a painter by day, kite flyer by night, with an inability to speak to females after a traumatic childhood experience. His love life is therefore nonexistent, but his heart is oozing with care as he stumbles through the oddities of life, love, and friendship.
Chiho Sugiura (Asami Mizukawa) has left her job to seek her passion of becoming a photographer, but after a few mishaps she bumps into Fuku-chan and realizes his face would be the perfect subject for her art. The two create a charming relationship as Chiho...

We’ve all seen couples like Gota and Chika Yanagida — some of us may even be in one. In writer-director Shin Adachi’s “A Beloved Wife,” the Yanagidas bicker constantly, turning their near-constant state of marital conflict into a kind of public performance, sucking friends and strangers alike into the typhoon of their discomfort. Are they really so unhappy, or is this all some kind of routine, a combative sort of foreplay before a marathon bout of make-up sex?
Only Gota and Chika can be sure, although one thing is certain: It can be exhausting to witness such a dynamic in real life, whereas Adachi’s autobiographical satire never wears out its welcome, counting on the likability of its cast to overcome behavior most of us couldn’t stand in real life. As the semi-ironic title suggests, “A Beloved Wife” is simultaneously tough and affectionate with both parties, amounting to...

Two Japanese films, “Tezuka’s Barbara” and “A Beloved Wife” have been selected for the main competition section of next month’s Tokyo International Film Festival.
The festival will reveal the remainder of the competition and the bulk of its other selections later this month. To date the Japanese festival has only revealed its opening film a gala screening of Japanese film “Talking The Pictures,” directed by Masayuki Suo, and Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” as its closing event.
“Barbara” is an adult-oriented fantasy tale, directed by Makoto Tezka who adapts his father Osamu Tezka’s famous novel, itself a reimagining of “The Tales of Hoffmann.” The story deals with the erotic and bizarre experiences of a novelist whose life is turned upside down by a mysterious girl named Barbara, and touches on taboos including forbidden love, eroticism, scandal and the occult.

Director: Tae-gyun Kim.
Writers: Kôji Matsumoto (manga), and Tetsuya Oishi (screenplay).
Cast: Dai Watanabe, Asami Mizukawa and Kôji Yamamoto.
Despite the misleading title and the film’s comic book origins, the only real problem with Higanjima, Escape from Vampire Island is that Japanese folklore does not have any real vampires to really call their own. There are vampire-like creatures, like the Kappa, said to lure its victims to a watery grave to feast upon their blood; but, it is a creature that's also revered than always feared. There is also an Ikiryoh, a spirit that can drain its victim of its energy. That said, the real life folklore do not deter from the enjoyment of this film. Vampires can freely move about the world and amalgamate into any culture where it is given a new name by the village it is raiding.
In this film, that is almost exactly what happened.

On Friday, the Japanese film website Cinema Today posted a link to a 2-minute trailer for Ryuichi Honda’s upcoming comedy Ohkike no Tanoshii Ryoko: Shinkon Jigoku-hen. The film is based on a 2008 novel by Shiro Maeda and will premiere at Yubari Fanta later this month under an equally unwieldy English title A Honeymoon in Hell: Mr. & Mrs. Oki’s Fabulous Trip.
The film stars Yutaka Takenouchi and Asami Mizukawa as Nobuyoshi and Saki Ohkike, a newlywed couple who have already grown bored with one another. They move into a new home together, but they can’t seem to stop bickering over trivial issues. On the advice of a sketchy fortune-teller they meet at a local supermarket, they wind up going on a trip through “Hell” on their honeymoon, meeting strange new people and eventually rekindling their relationship.
I doubt the trailer is intended to make much sense in any language,...

Yutaka Takenouchi and Asami Mizukawa are set to co-star in a new comedy by “Gs Wonderland” director Ryuichi Honda called Ohkike no Tanoshii Ryoko: Shinkon Jigoku-hen. This will mark the first pure comedy film roles for both actors, with Takenouchi’s character being described as the “boke” (funny man) of the pair to Mizukawa’s “tsukkomi” (straight person).
The new film is based on a novel by Shiro Maeda, who also handled the screenplay. Maeda has won numerous prestigious awards during his young career, including the Yukio Mishima Prize, Galaxy Award, and a nomination for the 2005 Noma Literary New Face Prize. Although this will be his first work to be adapted to film, his style is already drawing comparisons to established Japanese comedy writers Koki Mitani and Kankuro Kudo.
Takenouchi and Mizukawa will play Nobu and Saki, a married couple who have already grown tired of their life together even though they’re still newlyweds.

Director: Tae-gyun Kim. Review: Adam Wing. Having looked forward to and loathed Tae-gyun Kim’s effects laden martial arts oddity Volcano High, it’s fair to say that my expectations for his take on the vampire horror genre weren’t high. Higanjima - a live-action Japanese movie based on the best-selling Manga series by Koji Matsumoto - is coming to UK DVD and Blu-ray in October courtesy of Manga Entertainment. Billed as a horror movie, it’s probably best if you lower your expectations and take a different approach to viewing the film. I really want to call it horror comedy but it takes itself a little too seriously for that, in fact - to define a movie like this can prove a little troublesome. Pop-rock horror anyone? I think I just made up my own movie genre but still… Two years after his older brother, Atsushi (Dai Watanabe), goes missing under mysterious circumstances,...

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

I was so excited at seeing the SXSW line up last night that I completely forgot to post it and started searching the interwebs for cool content to go with it. Oops. Yes, I wish I was there but alas, it wasn’t mean to be (though don’t despair. We’ll be bringing you wicked awesome coverage).
But enough rambling, you want to know what’s all playing. Well, for a start there’s the much anticipated McGruber (trailer), the Duplass’ semi-mainstream comedy Cyrus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs (trailer, review), Daniel Stamm’s horror flick Cotton and that’s on top of the previously announced titles which include Electra Luxx (Carla Gugino as a pregnant porn star? Bring. It. On.) and Kick-Ass (trailer). That’s already a great line-up but dear me, some of the other titles are pretty awesome too.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.

The 2010 SXSW Film Festival and Conference has announced its initial slate of titles. The list is rife with hot world premieres (Kick-Ass), films fresh from Sundance (The Runaways, Cyrus), hot titles from the 2009 editions of Tiff and Cannes that haven't had much U.S. play (Enter the Void, Dogtooth, Trash Humpers), interesting documentaries (Lemmy, The People v. George Lucas) and much, much more. Simon Rumley's Red, White & Blue, which has received much praise on Twitch based on its Iffr screenings, will have its North American premiere.
Midnight programming courtesy of Fantastic Fest is also back with titles like Higanjima, Monsters, Serbian Film, Outcast, and a yet to be announced special film. Keep eye out for SXSW coverage at Twitch, but for now, pursue the massive list below (descriptions courtesy of SXSW).
