“Lucky,” a searing chronicle of sexual assault penned by Alice Sebold (“The Lovely Bones”), is set to be adapted into a feature film by Karen Moncrieff (“13 Reasons Why”).
James Brown (“Still Alice”) is producing the film. Lisa Wolofsky of Skywolf Media and Nadine de Barros at Fortitude are fully financing and will executive produce. Fortitude is handling international sales. “Lucky” is currently in pre-production and casting, and it will start filming in the fall.
In her memoir, Sebold reveals how her life was altered when she was raped and beaten in a park near campus as an 18-year-old college freshman. Sebold then fought to secure her rapist’s arrest and conviction. The book sold over one million copies.
“Karen’s work on ‘Lucky’ achieves what every great adaptation should, staying true to Alice’s memoir while imbuing it with the cinematic tension of a nail-biting thriller,” said Brown, whose...

Lifetime has unveiled the premiere dates for their robust slate of winter movies. From music icons to deadly cheerleaders to the daughter of a notorious mob boss, the network isn’t holding back when it comes to the drama — some based on true stories, some not — for 2019.
Highlights of their slate include Love You to Death (January 26) starring Marcia Gay Harden, which is based on the true story of a mother and daughter who are nothing like they seem, their tumultuous relationship ending in a brutal murder. Also based on a true story is Escaping the Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story (January 19) starring Christina Ricci. The movie is inspired by Nellie Bly’s undercover stay at the impenetrable Women’s Lunatic Asylum. For something a little lighter, there’s Olivia Newton-John: Hopelessly Devoted to You (February 16) which follows the personal and professional journey of the titular Grease icon. Lifetime...

Jason Blum is “sorry” for his “dumb comments” about a lack of female directors available to make movies under his Blumhouse banner.
“Thank you everyone for calling me out on my dumb comments in that interview,” he said early Thursday morning on Twitter, referencing a Polygon piece that was published not 20 hours prior. “I made a stupid mistake.”
Blum then went on to point out the female-skewing demographics of both his audience and executive team. He also referenced actress Jamie Lee Curtis as the anchor of his new movie “Halloween,” which hits theaters tomorrow. In addition to starring in the film, Curtis is also an executive producer on it.

“Better Call Saul” writer Gennifer Hutchison offered some advice to Jason Blum after the Blumhouse Productions chief said in an interview that he’s “trying” to hire a woman to direct a horror film at his studio, but there aren’t enough willing to take a stab at the genre.
“Producers and studios, if they are really serious about hiring women directors, need to work on fostering talent that has been overlooked rather than simply chasing the overbooked few female directors,” Hutchison said in a tweet. “You have to take chances on new voices to achieve parity.”
Blum’s comments came in response to a Polygon interview question that pointed out his Blumhouse has never produced a theatrically released horror movie directed by a woman.

The horror genre has defined the success of Blumhouse Productions ever since the company’s “Paranormal Activity” became one of the most profitable films ever made in 2007. While the company, led by Jason Blum, has had unparalleled success, the studio has failed to produce any horror movies directed by female filmmakers over the last 11 years and counting. Polygon editor Matt Patches recently informed Blum about the statistic during an interview for “Halloween,” to which Blum assured the studio has actively searched for female directing talent.
“We’re always trying to do that,” Blum said. “We’re not trying to do it because of recent events. We’ve always been trying. There are not a lot of female directors period, and even less who are inclined to do horror. I’m a massive admirer of [‘The Babadook’ director] Jennifer Kent. That Blumhouse train just keeps a-rollin', and we can now add yet another project to the extraordinary roster. Just announced is The Keeping Hours, which has signed up Lee Pace (Guardians Of The Galaxy, The Hobbit) and Carrie Coon (Gone Girl) to star.Karen Moncrieff (The Trial Of Cate McCall) is directing the film, which revolves around a couple dealing with the death of their son in a road accident. Separated for some time, they get a chance at reconciliation as the tenth anniversary of the tragedy approaches. In a new direction for Blumhouse, it's being described as "a supernatural love story".This year alone Jason Blum's prolific stable has already brought us The Visit, The Gift, Sinister 2, Unfriended, Insidious 3, The Gallows, The Lazarus Effect, the imminent Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and, slightly incongruously, Whiplash. Next year, along with The Keeping Hours, we can expect Ouija 2,...

"Total Recall" not only proves that Kate Beckinsale is stronger than the film itself, but more worthy of her own action vehicle than the original B-movie was of a remake. Beckinsale has enjoyed a lengthy career with few dramatic highpoints. The "Underworld" trilogy has made her a B-level action star (Comic-Con adores her; she was Esquire's Sexiest Woman Alive in 2009), but in more mainstream studio fare she has been relegated to supporting roles that utilize her beauty more than her talent. Her strongest performances are in her least-seen films, and one can only hope she picks better going forward. Her next project is a low-budget indie drama currently in post; "The Trials of Cate McCall," from director Karen Moncrieff. Beckinsale plays a former hotshot lawyer who, while in recovery and estranged from her family, must take the appeal case for a woman wrongfully convicted of murder, so that she can...

I have some hope for a Shawn Levy comedy. Odd, I know, but all we’ve heard about his next behind-the-camera effort, The Internship, makes the thing sound wholly tolerable — even if it’s mostly due to the presence of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. But there’s more reason to be optimistic, since Variety has pegged Max Minghella (The Social Network) as being in early talks; Tiya Sircar (Friends with Benefits), Josh Brener, and unknown Tobit Raphael have already signed.
The Vaughn-scripted film revolves around two middle-aged company employees (he and Wilson) who, after being laid off, start working for an up-and-coming website. While, overall, a good job, the presence of “wily, fresh-faced 22 year olds” creates some office tension; Minghella fits in as “a ruthlessly competitive intern” with the drive to play dirty in order to get ahead. Sircar and Brener will be seen as other employees, with the...

It’s a pairing made in both heaven and hell. As a press release from Stealth Media Group reports, Nicolas Cage and Mickey Rourke — “his career should have crashed” and “his career will crash over and over again” — are planning to collaborate on Marble City, a revenge picture succinctly described as “Kill Bill meets Drive.” That’s all well and good, but a better way to describe it would be, in terms of plot, “a journey of a newly released prisoner who seeks revenge on those that put him inside.”
Director Ryûhei Kitamura (Midnight Mean Train) — who sees it as “the story of a man who finds his inner peace through vengeance” — will work from the Thomas Sjölund-penned screenplay, while Cage and Rourke will go head-to-head in a battle of overacting that’s sure to ultimately underwhelm our socks into a slight breeze. Jane Fonda sure is busy these days. After taking only the occasional role over the past seven years, Fonda is suddenly everywhere again and can be seen the upcoming comedy-drama "Peace, Love & Misunderstanding," Aaron Sorkin's HBO series "The Newsroom," and will play Nancy Reagan in Lee Daniels' "The Butler." Add Geoff Moore and David Posamentier's "Better Living Through Chemistry" to Fonda's schedule as well.
Already in production in Los Angeles, the film stars Sam Rockwell as a small-town pharmacist who has an affair with a customer's trophy wife (Olivia Wilde), who introduces him to the pleasures of prescription drugs (apparently he never tried his own products). Things get messy when she wants him to kill her husband. According to Deadline, Fonda's character will be a customer of Rockwell's pharmacy who is "the conscience" of the film. Currently in France for Cannes, Fonda will soon head to Maryland to shoot her scenes.

Kate Beckinsale, star of the insanely popular Underworld movies (or most of them, at any rate), has just signed on to star in a legal drama where she plays a lawyer named Cate McCall. This is a big stretch, playing a character whose first name has one different letter, but Ms. Beckinsale has never been one to back down from a challenging role.
The news over at Deadline is that The Trials of Cate McCall is to begin shooting soon, with screenwriter/director Karen Moncrieff at the helm. In the film, Beckinsale will play a young hotshot attorney who threw her career down the tubes to become an addict of some sort. I suppose we can guess it’s drugs she’s addicted to, though it could also easily be shopping, on-line gambling, chocolate, or even love, as Robert Palmer once demanded we might as well face. Kate Beckinsale is set to star opposite Colin Farrell in the remake of Total Recall for Sony Pictures. She will play Lori (originally played by Sharon Stone) one of the lead roles. The other part up for grabs is the role of Melina (originally played by Rachel Ticotin) in Paul Verhoeven's 1990 version. A number of actresses have been in contention for the leads. Jessic Biel was up for an uknown lead role (possibly the one Beckinsale just got). Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are the serious contenders for the to play Melina. Beckinsale is no stranger to the film's director, Len Wiseman. Not only are they married, but they worked together on the Underworld films. She is also attached to star in The Trials of Kate McCullough, to be directed by Karen Moncrieff, and is currently shooting Underworld 4: New Dawn.

Exclusive: Kate Beckinsale has been offered one of the female lead roles alongside Colin Farrell in the Sony Pictures remake Total Recall. I'm told she's been offered to play Lori, who was portrayed in the 1990 Paul Verhoeven-directed actioner by Sharon Stone. In fact, that role really launched Stone's star after she transformed from the happy spouse of Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) into someone completely different. Both that role and the role of Melina (played in the original by Rachel Ticotin) has drawn high interest from actresses. I've heard that Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are the serious contenders for the latter role. Beckinsale wasn't among the names most often mentioned among actresses who read for Lori. But she certainly has a track record with the film's director, Len Wiseman. They're married, and before that, worked together on the Underworld films.
