A modern example of India’s shared heritage with Iran, her career was itself nothing short of a film story. Enamoured of the silver screen when young, she began with child roles. but on coming of age, found no major actor ready to share screen space with her apart from a reel – and real life – strongman, until the foremost thespian of the time gave her a rare chance.
After Dilip Kumar agreed to Mumtaz (Askari) as one of the romantic partners for one of the twins in “Ram Aur Shyam” (1967), there was no looking back for her. Male actors, who had once spurned her as a ‘B-grade’ actress were now more than ready to accept her. She was so much sought after that a superstar of the time, with whom she had a string of successes, reportedly went into a sulk if she acted with other heroes.

As we explore a few of the different shades that Bollywood has celebrated Lord Shiva through, we take you on a very quick journey beginning in 1950, with the song “Bhole nath se nirala” to end with Koyla’s (1997) mischievous “Bhang Ke Nashe Mein”.
Known by at least 1008 different names, including “Kailas” (One who bestows Peace), “Shambu” (Source of everything) and “Hari” (Sustainer and Destroyer), Lord Shiva is said to have married Parvarti on Maha Shivratri. “I always believe that my films should give some hope to the man who comes to watch them for those three hours. If he goes home on an optimistic note, I would feel satisfied at having done my duty.” – Yash Chopra
It was indeed a sad day when news spread that one of India’s finest filmmakers, Mr. Yash Chopra, unexpectedly passed away at the age of 80. Mr. Chopra is an undisputable legend and he has crafted some of the finest commercial films the Bollywood audiences have ever feasted their eyes upon. If Satyajit Ray is considered by Indian film enthusiasts to be the supreme director when it comes to art-house cinema, Yash Chopra can be classified as the definitive director when it comes to mainstream cinema. Yash Chopra is largely famous for making wonderful romantic films, though he has directed a handful of non-romantic films also. Yet no director...

One of Indian cinema's first superstars who appeared in 15 consecutive hit films in the course of three years
Rajesh Khanna, who has died aged 69 after a long illness, was Indian cinema's first superstar. At the height of his fame he generated adulation that sometimes verged on mass hysteria and appeared in 15 consecutive hit films over the course of three years.
He first achieved acclaim in Aradhana (Worship, 1969), playing two roles – the husband and grown-up son, both air force pilots, of the established star Sharmila Tagore. Notable among the romantic drama's musical numbers was the sexy Roop Tera Mastana (Your Beauty Is Intoxicating), recorded in a single take, a first for Hindi cinema.
Further highly commercial films followed, including Aan Milo Sajna (Come Meet Me, Beloved, 1970), Kati Patang (Broken Kite, 1970) and Haathi Mera Saathi (Elephant My Partner, 1971). More thought-provoking were Daag (Stain, 1973), dealing with the subject of bigamy, and Anand (1971), in...

Long before Shah Rukh wiggled his eyebrows and raised his arms for a hug, and well before Salman built that body, there was the inimitable Rajesh Khanna. If the late 70s were Amitabh Bachchan’s one man industry, then the early 70s were Rajesh’s domain. Truly, the era of the first superstars in Hindi cinema has come to an end when Khanna passed away this past Wednesday.
Often called the Prince of Romance, Khanna offered up a gentler and tender side to romance that is sorely missed in today’s era. Born as Jatin Khanna on December 29th 1942, he was a keen lover of films since an early age. His rise to the top also seems like a struggler’s dream, as he was picked from thousands of applicants from the All India Talent Contest. It’s easy to see why. That twinkle in his eye, the tilted head,...

The original superhero of Bollywood, wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh passed away this morning at the age of 83.

On Wednesday Dr. Ram Narain told the press that he had “less chance of recovery” due to serious damage to his brain. The actor was shifted back home on Wednesday evening so he could be with them for one last time.
“As Dara Singh’s condition was deteriorating fast, respecting wishes of his family, he has been shifted home with ventilator and medicines. A nurse and a doctor are at his home. Song still from Joker
A still from Shirish Kunder’s upcoming film Joker has drawn conjectures with past classic films
Shirish Kunder has uploaded a picture on his social networking sites from his upcoming film Joker starring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha. Many people are drawing similarities with the Jai Jai Shiv Shankar number from the Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz starrer Aap Ki Kasam (1974). Some also believe that the sequence is inspired from the ‘Dum Maro Dum’ number featuring Zeenat Aman in Hare Raam Hare Krishna (1971).
Sonakshi’s yellow lehenga choli and Akshay Kumar’s dhoti teamed with shades (as well as Akshay’s hat) give a fusion feel to the film. The Trishul in Sonakshi’s hand probably leads to the Jai Jai Shiv Shankar conclusion and the background foreign dancers in saffron robes with the Rudrakhsh accessories draws the comparison to the Dum Maro Dum song.

It's been three months since Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai had it's release and did good business but the fire hasn't died down yet. While Ekta Kapoor is looking at future projects, she is embroiled in a controversy involving her previous film. It is said that a company called Movie Tee Vee Enterprises is taking Balaji Motion Pictures to court for using the remixed version of the song 'Duniya Mein Logon Ko' in Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai. The original song is from the Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz starrer film Apna Desh (1972). Balaji claims that they have taken the rights of the said song from Sa Re Ga Ma for remaking it; while on the other hand, Movie Tee Vee Enterprises claims that Sa Re Ga Ma cannot rightfully give the rights for a remix of the song, as they own the negative rights. Currently, Balaji's legal department is looking into the issue.

For Ekta Kapoor’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, she zipped back to the swinging ’70s for an eye-catching retro look that has fetched her a flood of compliments. “What worked was the variety in my wardrobe. I wore saris in Mumtaz’s Brahmachari style and ultra-glam western dresses reminiscent of Zeenat Aman. In one scene, I had Parveen Babi bangs and in another Jackie Kennedy’s dark bob and glares. Every shot had a different look, poori bhadas nikaal li (I experimented to my heart’s content),” laughs self-confessed fashionista, Kangna Ranaut.Quiz her on the sequel, and she admits that no one ...

Click above for more movie stills Akshay and Aishwarya are thrilled. They'll get to enact songs featuring their mother-in-law Dimple and father-in-law Amitabh, respectively. But composer Pritam Chakraborty is in a bit of a jam. Vipul Shah has decided at the last minute to re-record an entire complicated track for Action Replayy for a retro-song to be filmed on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshay Kumar. And this is no ordinary request. The one all-comprehensive track will have to represent screen jodis as diverse as Raj Kapoor-Nargis, Rajesh Khanna -Mumtaz, Amitabh Bachchan-Jaya, Dharmendra-Hema Malini and Rishi Kapoor-Dimple Kapadia. The long-planned retro-song representing various eras of evergreen screen-jodis has now undergone a massive change. Every section of the song will now have differently mooded lyrics and tunes to go with the different looks that Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will don to represent screen pairs over the decades.
