Disney’s “Space Mountain” has been reignited.
Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, whose credits including “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and the two Michael Bay-produced live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” films, have been hired to write a new screenplay based on the beloved Disney Parks attraction, TheWrap has learned.
Jonathan Eirich from Rideback is producing the feature, along with Joby Harold (who wrote an earlier iteration of the project) and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse. Ryan Halprin of Rideback is executive producing.
The original Space Mountain opened as the centerpiece of the Magic Kingdom’s version of Tomorrowland in 1975, part of the expansive Walt Disney World resort outside of Orlando, Fla. The ride is known for its strikingly graphic design — comprised of a cone and spires that jut heavenward (and can be seen as part of John Hench’s early concept art) — and its thrilling, coaster-in-the-dark aesthetic. Disney is moving forward with another movie based on a beloved theme park attraction. This time it’s Space Mountain. The film will join the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean, Jungle Cruise and The Haunted Mansion as Disney seeks to expand its theme park attractions into movies and licensed products.
While the movie has been in development limbo for quite some time, it’s being resuscitated by the showrunners of Netflix’s short-lived live-action Cowboy Bebop series which… was a thing.

In case you’ve forgotten (I certainly did), Disney has been developing a Space Mountain movie based on the popular theme park attraction. It’s been a while since we last heard about the project, but THR reports that the studio has tapped Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec to pen the script.
Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec are best known for writing Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but from what I understand, the Space Mountain ride doesn’t really have any memorable scenes or characters like those found in Pirates of the Caribbean, so the project could really go in any direction.

The Space Mountain movie was first announced close to four years ago, with Joby Harold (Obi-Wan Kenobi) set to write and produce.

Disney is once again trying to make a "Space Mountain" movie happen. This is one of the company's most cherished theme park rides as a staple of both Disneyland and Disney World for decades. Now, a pair of new writers have been brought on board to try and crack the code with this long-gestating adaptation. Whether or not they will be the ones to get it across the finish line is another question entirely.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec have been tapped to write the latest iteration of "Space Mountain" for Disney. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being. Applebaum and Nemec are known for their work on Amazon's wildly expensive series "Citadel," as well as Netflix's live-action "Cowboy Bebop" series, which was canceled after just one season. Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec (Citadel) have been tapped to script a live-action Space Mountain movie for Disney, Deadline can confirm.
While details as to the plot of the film are under wraps, it’s based on the theme park attraction first introduced to Disneyland on January 15, 1975. Jonathan Eirich will produce for Rideback, alongside Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse, with Rideback’s Ryan Halprin is exec producing. Harold also completed a previous draft of the script.

Designed by Imagineer John Hench and built by Wed Enterprises, now known as Walt Disney Imagineering, its concept originated in the 1960s during the space race era, with Walt Disney himself expressing interest in creating a space-themed attraction. One night, two struggling cartoonists had what turned out to be a billion-dollar idea. What if Frank Miller’s Daredevil had human-sized turtles in it? From that question came the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a quartet of brothers named after Renaissance artists who fought the Shredder and his Foot Clan (a spoof of perpetual Daredevil baddies the Hand). Who could have guessed that the self-published comic Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created would launch a phenomenon, one that survived its first boom in the late ‘80s and crash in the mid-1990s? It has since gone on to become an enduring pop culture franchise which is still going strong after several decades. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael have leaped out of the sewers and into every type of media, including video games and toys. Nonetheless, the characters are never more exciting than when they hit the big screen.

We all know that Mission: Impossible is about Ethan Hunt, the living manifestation of destiny. With mega-star Tom Cruise in the role, the character of Hunt became more important to the franchise than any of the leads of the original series, Jim Phelps, Dan Briggs (Steven Hill), or Cinnamon Carter (Barbara Bain). But for a little while, producers considered phasing Hunt out of the series, making him the new secretary of the Impossible Mission Force while Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt became the new team leader.
Those plans changed midway through the production of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol when Christopher McQuarrie came in to finish a script started by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec. Although director Brad Bird had already started shooting scenes for Ghost Protocol, McQuarrie successfully argued that Hunt should remain the focus and could not be replaced.
This behind-the-scenes tension added a spark of electricity between Brandt and Hunt on screen.

Even before "Citadel" debuted on Prime Video, it had already built the wrong kind of name for itself. While "Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" managed to balance headlines about its excessive and ludicrous budget with the promise of bringing audiences to the beloved Middle-earth, "Citadel" did not have much built-in anticipation for its world of story, but it did have a stupidly excessive budget.
Not only was "Citadel" already an expensive show, but there was reportedly behind-the-scenes drama between executive producers Joe & Anthony Russo (of "Avengers: Endgame" fame) and creators Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec (known for "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol"). Unsurprisingly, the Russos prevailed, and the original creators, as well as director Brian Kirk, left the show, with reshoots driving the budget up to a whopping $300 million for its first season.

It’s (finally) official: Prime Video has greenlit Season 2 of “Citadel,” with Joe Russo set to direct the entire season.
The first season of the spy drama, which premiered in April, had a number of directors attached, including Jessica Yu and Newton Thomas Sigel as well as Anthony Russo and Joe Russo on unspecified episodes. On Season 2, however, it will be solely Joe Russo on directing duties, with David Weil returning as showrunner.
Prime Video has also revealed that its big-budget original — which stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and features Lesley Manville and Stanley Tucci — is its second most-watched new original series outside the U.S. behind “Rings of Power” and its fourth most-watched program worldwide.
All episodes of Season 1 will land on Prime Video on Friday. Meanwhile, the series premiere will be made free to stream without membership on both Prime Video and the ad-supported Freevee for a month in the U.

Even before the first two episodes of "Citadel" debuted on Prime Video, the series made headlines for breaking Hollywood records. A troublesome production process pit executive producers Joe and Anthony Russo (of "Avengers: Endgame" fame) against creators Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec ("Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol"). When Amazon sided with the Marvel directors, it led to the exit of Appelbaum, Nemec, and director Brian Kirk ("21 Bridges"), which meant costly reshoots were set to follow. And when I say costly, I'm under-exaggerating: "Citadel" ended up with a record budget of $300 million for its six 40-minute episodes. That comes out to a whopping $1.25 million per minute!
Does that jaw-dropping price tag correlate to a quality spy thriller? It depends on who you ask. /Film's review dubs the series a "Bourne ripoff with no identity," pointing to underdeveloped ideas and a lackluster romance. But according to Prime Video, not everyone feels the same.

Plot: Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency—tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people—was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. With Citadel’s fall, elite agents Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. They’ve remained hidden ever since, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts. Until one night, when Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick, who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order.

When the highly anticipated spy series “Citadel” was announced on Prime Video, it had all the ingredients of a successful action thriller. Take a global conspiracy with a war between two mysterious and powerful organizations and add two international stars cast as elite-level spies (who occasionally sleep together), topped with high-octane fight scenes liberally.
But “Citadel” relies so heavily on rapid exposition and quick dialogue that instead of the expected sequence of flavorful courses, we’re being fed the entire meal at once.
The series follows Agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), agents of a secret organization called “Citadel” that’s “bound to no man or government” and fights to keep the peace from the shadows. Unfortunately, the agents get burned on a routine op and lose their memories. The pair fight to remember who they are and who sold them out to Manticore, a...

The Sands International Film Festival, Scotland’s burgeoning film event, opened its second edition this weekend with the world premiere screening of Citadel, the much-talked-about Prime Video series from Marvel auteurs Anthony and Joe Russo.
Two episodes of varying length, but both well under the hour mark, played as a surprise screening for the packed opening night crowd. The response from the audience, which comprised a mix of industry professionals and students from the University of St. Andrews, a co-organizer of the fest, was jubilant with heavy laughs and gasps for the surprisingly funny yet tricky spy thriller.
The ambitious series is led by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, who play members of a secret global spy agency called Citadel. After a deadly attack, the agency is disbanded, and its elite agents are wiped of their memories. With Citadel out the way, a new powerful syndicate, Manticore, is rising in the void.

Amazon Studios and MGM boss Jennifer Salke and Citadel star Priyanka Chopra Jonas sat down Friday in what is one of few entertainment-business discussions this year at SXSW. While Chopra Jonas was fearless about asking Salke how algorithms factor into programming decisions, a notable takeaway was when the Indian actress revealed she was getting compensated equally with her male lead co-star, Richard Madden (without naming him by name).

A couple months ago, we heard that season 2 of the series From would begin airing on MGM+ (formerly known as Epix) on April 23rd. Now a trailer for the new season has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.
I haven’t watched the first season of From – our own Alex Maidy has, and said “From definitely is worthy of a multi-season run” (you can read his 7/10 review Here) – so I was surprised to see just how creepy the trailer for season 2 is. A quote in the trailer even confirms the show has creeped out the great Stephen King… so I’m definitely going to have to start watching this series.
Written and created by John Griffin, From is described as a “contemporary sci-fi horror series”. The show aims to unravel the mystery of a nightmarish town in middle America that traps all those who enter.

After nearly two years of production, Amazon Prime Video has finally pulled back the curtain on “Citadel,” the wildly ambitious new spy series starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, with the first trailer released Monday.
The show is meant to serve as the mothership for several planned spin-offs based in local countries and performed in local languages: “Citadel” series set in Italy and India are already underway, with another Mexico-based show also in the works. It’s a gigantic and expensive bet on an original concept that had remained, up until this month, shrouded in mystery. As Variety previously reported, “Citadel” boasts a $185 million budget.
As executive producers Joe and Anthony Russo explained in a press conference in late February, “Citadel” originated from Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke, who approached the Russos and their independent studio Agbo about producing a global spy show. Agbo originally partnered with Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec,...

Prime Video’s big-budget new spy thriller Citadel has released its official trailer.
The drama is executive produced by the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame) and showrunner David Weil (Hunters), and stars Richard Madden (Bodyguard) and Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico).
The show’s trailer was previously announced to debut earlier this month, but then it was delayed following a train crash in Greece (the trailer includes an action sequence aboard a luxury train).
Citadel is conceived as a potential franchise starter: An Avengers-style global adventure where spies from several countries came together for the ultimate mission. Previously, The Hollywood Reporter detailed how Citadel‘s budget ballooned to more than $200 million for its seven episodes amid cost overruns and creative differences. The behind-the-scenes drama led to a round of pricey reshoots and writers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec being replaced by Weil. The project follows the Russo Bros’ spy thriller Gray Man...
