The crime drama Bergerac – a massive BBC One hit in the 1980s, starring John Nettles – is being rebooted. Here are the details.
Bergerac is back. Created by Doctor Who writer Robert Banks Stewart, the original series starred John Nettles and ran for nine series between 1981 and 1991. It became one of the biggest hits on the BBC schedules, all set on the island of Jersey.
The new version will give the show a “contemporary twist, as Bergerac is thrown into a knotty, high-stakes police investigation and challenged to his very core. He will be forced to confront his demons, while trying to save his family and career”.
The six-part UKTV Original series will be produced by BlackLight TV, part of Banijay UK, and written by Being Human creator Toby Whithouse, alongside Brian Fillis, Catherine Tregenna and Polly Buckle.

Warning: contains major spoilers for Black Mirror episode “Loch Henry”.
A brushed cymbal, a laidback fretless bassline, jazz drums and some sleazy horns. Oh yeah, you think, crime. Then wait a minute, what’s that sound? An accordion?! Where are we – the mean streets of 1970s Chicago or the chirpy colour of a French 1960s Jacques Demy picture?
I’ll tell you where we are: Jersey.
Part of the Channel Islands between the UK and France, Jersey enjoys judicial independence and self-government, just like its most famous export (after tax avoidance): 1980s maverick detective Jim Bergerac.
Played by John Nettles between 1981 and 1991 on BBC One, Jim Bergerac was a police detective turned Pi, and the sheriff ’round Jersey’s picturesque parts. Handsome, troubled, popular with the ladies, and the driver of a signature burgundy Triumph Roadster, Bergerac used to be Mr Sunday Night. For a decade, just after Songs of Praise,...

A reboot of classic British police procedural Bergerac is being developed by Paramount Network International – marking the latter’s first international drama project to emerge since its global expansion.
The series previously starred John Nettles, later known for his role in Midsomer Murders, as a detective on the small island of Jersey. It ran for nine seasons and 87 episodes on the BBC between 1981 and 1991 and was created by Robert Banks Stewart.
Endemol Shine-backed production company Artists Studios is developing the reboot with Westward Studios. It is the latest attempt to bring back the classic character – the BBC had previously attempted to remake the series with Artists Studios back in 2013. Artists Studios’ Gub Neal, who has produced series such as Prime Suspect and The Fall, is lead producer.
The move comes as Viacom ramps up the international rollout of Paramount Network International, under the leadership of Evp Jill Offman.

British police drama “Bergerac” is being primed for a reboot for Paramount Network International. U.K. production companies Artists Studios, which is backed by Endemol Shine U.K., and Westward Studios, which is based on Jersey where the show is set, are developing the project as a potential future commission for Paramount’s network of channels outside the U.S.
Emmy-winning producer Gub Neal is leading the development for Artists Studios, serving as executive producer. Neal said the show would be updated for the present day, dealing with “contemporary stories-of-the-week that run alongside a strong serial spine.”
Jill Offman, executive vice president of Paramount Network, said the company hoped to be able to commission “Bergerac” as a full series.

Decades later, when a deranged Manx criminal demands Mindhorn as his nemesis, Thorncroft returns to the scene of his greatest triumphs for one last chance to reignite his glory days, professional credibility and even romance with former co-star/paramour Patricia Deville (Essie Davis).
The idea of fans blurring the line between fiction and reality has been used numerous times in cinema, the latest example of which – Mindhorn – is a very British take on the idea: at once both spoofing and homaging the likes of 70s and 80s TV shows such as Bergerac,...

Cooee Poldark! Isn’t that out-of-control dot on the horizon none other than old flame Elizabeth, belly fit to burst with the fruits of the illicit night you shared last series, on a runaway horse heading for the cliff edge? Make haste sir!
To take a heartless view, were Elizabeth and her under-the-table baby to gallop off a precipice into the crashing waves below, it might not be the worst thing in the world for Ross Poldark. His wife Demelza, despite her innate goodness, would be able to see the silver lining of such a tragic event at least.

Sunday nights will have hearts racing a bit faster very soon, as Aidan Turner has begun shooting Poldark's second series.
BBC One's period drama has returned to Cornwall to film the 10 episodes set to air in 2016, and it probably won't be long before he has an excuse to take his top off.
Eleanor Tomlinson is also back as Demelza Poldark, while Midsomer Murders star John Nettles has joined the cast as one of the county's wealthy landowners.
The second run will be set in 1790 against the backdrop of "riot and revolution in the air", and also introduces other key characters from Winston Graham's 18th century series.

This BBC audience reaction report was one of the first nails in Doctor Who's coffin in the late eighties…
“Not for publication” is printed at the top of the 1988 audience reaction report for Doctor Who’s 24th season. It’s there for the purposes of BBC confidentiality, but could equally be a pain-saving instruction to save Sylvester McCoy fans the distress of reading the show’s three-page death sentence.
Because this report is painful stuff. Compiled in February 1988 after the broadcast of McCoy’s first four serials as the Doctor (from Time And The Rani to Dragonfire), it doesn’t mince its words in describing audience apathy and antipathy towards late-eighties Doctor Who. Looking back with the knowledge that the wilderness years were around the corner, each unimpressed audience response and scathing comment feels like another nail being hammered into classic Who’s coffin.
To begin with, the numbers weren’t good.

Fans all over the world instantly recognize actor John Nettles as the star of the hit ITV drama Midsomer Murders which is available in the U.S. through Acorn Media. However, as a kid growing up in England I also recall John as the face of another TV detective series — Bergerac. I was fortunate enough to catch up with him at the American Public Television Fall Marketplace. I begin by asking him about his time as Jim Bergerac and of course what it was like to drive that iconic car. As soon as I mention the burgundy 1947 Triumph Roadster John begins to laugh.
“That was probably the worst sports car ever built,” he chuckles.
“We filmed Bergerac on Jersey and the whole island is covered in narrow roads surrounded by hedges. It’s difficult enough to drive a normal car out there but that...

She was born Dorothy Renée Ascherson (she would drop the "c" some time after becoming an actress) on May 19, 1915, in Kensington, London, to Jewish parents: businessman Charles Ascherson and his second wife, Dorothy Wiseman -- both of whom narrowly escaped spending their honeymoon aboard the Titanic. Midsomer Murders is back on Acorn DVD with three all-new mysteries that debuted in the UK last year. If you haven’t been keeping up to speed with the long-running drama then you should know that these three stories feature Neil Dudgeon as John Barnaby rather than John Nettles as his cousin Tom. While the identity of the principal investigator has changed fairly recently, it seems like a long, long time since anyone other than Jason Hughes served as the top man’s sidekick. The good news is that Hughes does feature in the these three stories. The bad news is that this is the last you’ll see of him as he left the show in 2013.
Written in the Stars is the first mystery in Midsomer Murders Set 24. As the story begins, the whole community are giddy with excitement about an upcoming solar eclipse.

Comic Relief have just posted this rather brilliant skit with Catherine Tate (Elaine) meeting Daniel Craig aka ‘BondBoy68′ on a dating website. The couple hit it off, move in together and live happily ever after (or do they?!)! Throughout the skit, Elaine has no idea that she’s going out with the real Daniel Craig and would much rather find John Nettles.
We’ve not seen it before but it’s well worth a watch and shows Daniel Craig’s more comical (and geeky) side.
Check it out below, we think you’ll like it a lot!

The BBC is reportedly planning to remake Bergerac.
The classic drama - which aired on BBC One between 1981 and 1991 - followed Jersey-based detective Jim Bergerac (John Nettles).
The new series is in the early stages, with a script yet to be written, according to Broadcast.
However, the BBC is said to be keen to replicate the original's international appeal and is currently in discussions with global broadcasters and distributors.
Bergerac was created by Scottish writer Robert Banks Stewart, who has given his blessing to the remake.
"The team involved has full artistic freedom to recreate Bergerac the way they see it in the 21st century - though obviously the unique atmosphere of Jersey, and the island's involvement, will count for a lot," he said.
Banks Stewart recently told Digital Spy that he believes the UK television industry is neglecting older writers and criticised the BBC for relying on tried-and-tested formats.

The format is not really any different to any other murder mystery really to be honest with you, but I think what makes a murder mystery work is the characters and I think it’s...

Back in the UK, Neil Dudgeon has well and truly established himself as the face of Midsomer Murders. Now fans of the show in the U.S. can get their first look at the man who replaced John Nettles (remember him?) with the release of Acorn Media’s Midsomer Murders set 21. The four stories in this four-disc set were aired in the UK just last year and have never been broadcast on U.S. TV.
Death in the Slow Lane is the first feature length story in Midsomer Murders set 21. The episode begins with John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) arriving in Britain’s most dangerous village as the heir apparent to his cousin Tom. DS Jones (Jason Hughes) isn’t exactly enamored with his new Dci who mocks his attempts to restore an old race car. Their differences are quickly forgotten when...

The Sicilian Defence. co. ITV Midsomer Murders
B Van Heusen
Midsomer Murders was back on TV tonight with a baffling murder mystery involving members of a chess club. In case you don’t know – The Sicilian Defence is actually a chess strategy. In this story, the killer brought chess pieces to life as the unfortunate pawns of Midsomer were knocked off one by one. While the killing strategy might sound quite cunning the down side to such a scheme is that it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the killer might be an avoid chess fan. Not sure if Baranaby ranks as a genius but he and Jones were astute enough to solve this one.
At some point they are going to run out of English village cliches to keep Midsomer Murders going but for now at least the good folks over at ITV seem to have...

Guest Column by Alice Maltin When actor John Nettles decided to hang up his badge as Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby and walk into the sunset (or wherever they told us he was going), that ended one of TVs most enjoyable British murder mystery series. Then they had the audacity to return with Neil Dudgeon as Dci John Barnaby—Tom’s cousin! I wished they hadn’t done that…but they did, and you know what? He’s really good. They pulled it off. Tom Barnaby was a smart, likeable and easygoing Dci who never lost a case, or his temper. He had a devoted wife and daughter and a trusty sergeant, Ben Jones (Jason Hughes). His cousin, Dci...

Midsomer Murders Death and the Divas
N Conrad
Midsomer Murders returned to ITV tonight with an entertaining little yarn in which real life imitated fiction. The aptly named Death and the Divas began with Dci John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) enjoying a quiet night at a screening of a 1960s Hammer horror style movie. One of the film’s stars just happened to be local resident Stella Harris (Sinead Cusack). However, the Barnaby’s date-night turned sour when DS Hughes uncovered a murder that seemed to have been inspired by the vampiric activities in the film Barnaby had been watching. Things really started to get interesting when Harris’ rather more famous sister Diana (Harriet Walter) arrived in town as the star attraction at the Midsomer Langley film festival. As Barnaby and Hughes began to unravel the murder mystery, the sibling divas soon became central figures in the investigation.

Inspector George Gently
By Kieran Kinsella
With most of the nation under extreme heat advisories there has never been a better time to close the curtains, crank up the A/C and power up the DVD player. You can begin your summer TV-fest by watching Acorn Media’s George Gently series 4. Gently is utterly captivating. It’s set in the same dreary North Eastern corner of England as ITV’s Vera but unlike that show, Gently is set in the swinging sixties rather than the present time. Both shows tackle hard hitting subjects but George Gently isn’t as soul destroyingly depressing as Vera.
Series 4 consists of two feature length episodes. The first centers around a group of teenage girls who are desperate to enjoy the new found freedoms of the era regardless of their parent’s concerns. Things change pretty quickly when one of the girls is murdered. Gently...

You may know her as John Nettles’ leading lady, as Tom Baker’s able assistant or as the matriarch of a powerful East End family but if you love British TV then it is safe to say that you are a fan of Louise Jameson. Narrowing down my list of questions was no easy task considering that Louise has starred in everything from Doc Martin to Tenko, but when I recently had the chance to speak with her she provided me with a candid incite into her incredibly successful career.
What are your favorite memories of working on Doctor Who? and appearing alongside Tom Baker?

The Dark Rider saw Midsomer Murders regulars Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and Jones (Jason Hughes) investigating a seemingly supernatural headless horseman. Or was it someone else using the wealthy DeQuetteville family’s past to literally scare the living daylights out of the current inhabitants of Quitewell Hall? Basically, the Dark Rider was kind of a grown up version of the old Look and Read story Dark Towers only with better special effects and a bit more blood and guts. Now there's a combination you won't find in your average fine dining restaurant. Hordes of students up and down the country swear by this sort of food, especially when they find that the budget's plummeted to zero at the end of the month. Result? Raid the fridge and the food cupboards and fill your belly with unusual if unappetising recipes.
Bet it leaves a funny taste in the mouth though – in fact, hindsight leaves a bittersweet taste in the mouth too. Especially if you're a picky, over-perfectionist reviewer who's poring over past analyses of Doctor Who stories. In 2010, I reviewed the whole of Matt Smith's first season, and scribbling my thoughts pretty much on the trot and working on first impressions. Looking back at those reviews, you'd have thought that I'd have stumbled across a brand new Golden Age of Doctor Who. Yes, even stories such as The Beast Below,...

Midsomer Murders, as the years have gone on, has been a hit-and-miss affair. Some of the show's mysteries are absolute crackers, while others fall a bit short. Such is the nature of television, especially long-running shows like Midsomer Murders.
For those who prefer to see the hits and not the misses, Acorn Media has released a set titled Midsomer Murders: Barnaby's Top 10, effectively a 'greatest hits' of the show thus far. The episodes in the set were chosen by the actor who portrays Barnaby, the brilliant John Nettles. The timing of this release is appropriate; Acorn Media, who releases the show on DVD in the Us, are close to putting John Nettles' final episodes on DVD for the fist time. Nettles retired from the series in February of this year.
The episodes, arranged into categories, are all excellent outings from the series. The show's first episode, "The Killings at Badgers' Drift,...

A boy living in on a council estate is afraid and has been told to put the things that scare him into the cupboard in his room. (Why are scary things always found in the cupboard or under the bed. What is it with bedrooms and terrifying stuff.) He wants his mother, Claire (Emma Cunniffe) to do the ritual with the lights, turning them off and on five times before she leaves. George (Jamie Dram) hears the lift and even that makes him afraid. He calls out for help, "Please save me from the monsters" over and over. This is relayed eons away to the Doctor (Matt Smith) in the Tardis on his psychic paper. Just as Claire says George needs a doctor. The Doctor's doing something he's never done before, "making a housecall." Or that should be a (dolls) housecall! Sorry spoilers! The Tardis lands outside a rundown estate,...

You'd think that by the time a series got around to releasing set 18, it'd be a bit stale, wouldn't it? Not so with the quintessentially British Midsomer Murders. Set 18 of the popular crime drama will hit DVD on September 6 with three new mysteries never before released nor aired in the U.S.
John Nettles prowls his way through all three adventures as Dci Tom Barnaby, who manages to solve all three cases without breaking his signature, inquisitive cool. He's accompanied by Jason Hughes as Detective Sergeant Ben Jones, Barnaby's less experienced but still efficient partner. Neither character is given much room for development in any of the three mysteries. Only Barnaby really has a distinct personality; Jones isn't given much at all.
The mysteries themselves are surprisingly great. The first, titled "Small Mercies," is the best of the set, featuring a series of murders centering around a model village in Little Worthington.

The TV producer behind popular British detective show Midsomer Murders claims he has been treated like "a criminal" since he was suspended for making controversial racial comments about the programme.
Brian True-May hit headlines in his native Britain earlier this week (beg14Mar11) for claiming multicultural characters would "look out of place" and "just wouldn't work" in the longrunning series, which is set in a quaint English village.
His bosses at the ITV network branded his words "shocking and appalling" and suspended him from his job while an investigation gets underway.
True-May has now opened up about his suspension, telling Britain's Daily Mail, "According to press reports I am going to be investigated as if I was a criminal. There's not a lot to investigate."
And when he was told some viewers had branded the reaction to his comments "hysterical", he replied, "You said it, not me. But I agree."
Lead actor Neil Dudgeon, who has replaced former star John Nettles in the series, has also spoken out to defend True-May, telling Britain's Daily Express, "If people have been quite happy for it not to change in 14 years, there's no reason to suppose they're going to want it to change now."...

The TV boss behind popular British detective show Midsomer Murders has been suspended over comments he made in a candid interview suggesting the programme "just wouldn't work" without an all-white cast.
The show's executive producer, Brian True-May, has hit headlines in his native Britain for claiming multicultural characters would "look out of place" in the longrunning series, which is set in a quaint English village.
He told Radio Times, "We are a cosmopolitan society in this country, but if you watch Midsomer you wouldn't think so. I've never been picked up on that, but quite honestly I wouldn't want to change it... Maybe I'm not politically correct.... We just don't have ethnic minorities involved. Because it wouldn't be the English village with them. It wouldn't work.... They (fans) love the perceived English genteel eccentricity. It's not British, it's very English. We're the last bastion of Englishness and I want to keep it that way."
But his comments have angered bosses at ITV, the network behind the show, and he has now been suspended while an investigation is launched.
An ITV spokesman says, "We are shocked and appalled at these personal comments by Brian True-May which are absolutely not shared by anyone at ITV.
"We are in urgent discussions with All3Media, the producer, who have informed us that they have launched an immediate investigation into the matter and have suspended Mr True-May pending the outcome."
The show formerly starred John Nettles, who quit last year after 13 seasons. He has been replaced by Neil Dudgeon.

This is the most awesomely bizarre music video I think I've ever seen. The music video is promoting a Norwegian television entertainment program called Golden Times, and it features one hell of a crazy gathering of actors and actresses from shows such as Cheers, Twin Peaks, Seinfeld, The Incredible Hulk and more icons from the 80's and 90's. They sing the classic Beatles song Let it Be.
Here's a list of actors that appear in the video:
Roger Moore
Huey Lewis
Jason Alexander
Ricki Lake
Josie Biesett
Alberto Tomba
John Nettles
George Wendt
Paul Mackenna
Philip Michael Thomas
Glenn Close
Gorden Kaye
Pamela Anderson
Leslie Nielsen
Dolph Lundgren
Kelly McGillis
Sherilyn Fenn
Daryl Hannah
Lou Ferrigno
And several more!
I don't know what else to say... It's just so weird! Check out the video below and tell us what you think.

Midsomer Murders | Wonderland: Boy Cheerleaders | Michael Wood's Story Of England | The Boys Of H Company | Mad Men | Film 2010 With Claudia Winkleman
Midsomer Murders
8pm, ITV1
A guilty Wednesday evening diversion or subtle deconstruction of a rural bourgeois idyll? Either way, John Nettles as Dci Tom Barnaby is remarkable in that he doesn't seem to do anything – it's perhaps the easiest job in TV, or maybe he's the Charles Bronson of prime time, where a fixed expression and narrow eyes act as a cover for manifold emotions. This week the bodies start dropping round a boxing champ, his dodgy manager, a justice of the peace with familial complications, the village solicitor and an artist who shares a workshop with a moody blacksmith. On September 28, Acorn Media brings Us fans the sixteenth(?!) set of the highly popular Midsomer Murders. You may have seen it on A&E or Biography Channel, but these four episodes have never been broadcast in America. Let’s take a look at the newest volume of this series which has been going strong since March 1997.
The Show
Color me impressed. Midsomer Murders has turned out more than seventy-five episodes since its debut, and is still in production – a feat considering most British series can produce as few as four episodes per series (compared to the Us standard of somewhere between thirteen and twenty-two). The cast has remarkably remained almost the same since its 1997 debut, except for the addition of Jason Hughes (best known as Warren in the groundbreaking series This Life) in 2005. What American show would be so lucky as to have the same cast for thirteen years?
As the title implies,...

Two From Powell/Pressburger Criterion releases gorgeous new transfers of two of the greatest films to come out of post-war Britain, from that period’s greatest filmmaking team: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Black Narcissus was originally released in 1947 and caused a sensation with its explosive story about a nun (Deborah Kerr), cloistered in a remote convent in the Himalayas, who must battle elements both external (the punishing weather) and internal (temptations of the flesh over duty to the spirit).
