He was previously married to Diana, Krystyna, Dorit, Jadwiga and Tatiana Zuanar. He died on 29 November 2006 in Lódz, Lódzkie, Poland.

Trivia
During World War II, he fought in the ill-fated Warsaw Uprising. After the war, he served for a short time in the US Army in occupied Germany, before returning to Poland. When he later attempted to flee Poland, he was arrested and sent to prison. He remained a critic of the Communist regime, which is thought to have cost him leading roles over four decades.
