Friday Night Dinner knows the truth about families. Not that they bicker, mock and childishly compete – sitcom’s known about that since Steptoe & Son. No, Friday Night Dinner knows that families aren’t made up of people; they’re made up of odd habits.
Did you ever invite a friend home from school and pray that none of your family’s Weird Stuff would leak out into the playground the next day? That your mum’s special word for a fart wouldn’t follow you down the corridor into Maths, and the dinner hall wouldn’t echo with the high-pitched voice in which you all talk to the dog? Perhaps you hoped against hope that your brother wouldn’t be wearing his comedy Viz Buster Gonad t-shirt, that no-one would see the wooden clothes peg holding open the choke on your dad’s car, and that nobody would call...

Stephen Fry will use next week’s Channel 4 Alternative Christmas Message to call for British Jews to “stand upright and proud in who they are” in the face of “the greatest rise in anti-Jewish racism since records began.”
Fry, who will say he “never thought for a single second” he would have to worry about being Jewish in the UK, will deliver an intensely personal speech in the wake of the huge rise in antisemitism following Hamas’ brutal October 7 attack on Israel.
He will point to the 1350% rise in antisemitic attacks in Britain over the past two-and-a-half months – working out at roughly 50 per day – citing “shop windows smashed, Stars of David and swastikas daubed on walls of Jewish properties, synagogues, and cemeteries, and Jewish schools being forced to close.”

A string of high-profile figures from the entertainment world attended a march against antisemitism on the streets of London yesterday, in what is thought to be the biggest rally of its kind for nearly 90 years.
The likes of Maureen Lipman, Eddie Marsan and It’s a Sin star Tracy Ann-Oberman were at the march, which is reported to have attracted more than 100,000 people. Others who attended included former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie Johnson, Countdown host Rachel Riley and comedian David Baddiel. Marsan, Baddiel and Riley were amongst those who addressed the crowds.
Organized by the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), the rally took place to counter heightened concerns over antisemitism among Jewish communities in multiple European countries since the attack on October 7 by Hamas on Israel – which saw the kidnap of 200 civilians and killing of around 1,400 – and the war that has followed.

After Netflix released the first trailer for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” a biographical romance about Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre, many viewers took issue with Cooper’s large prosthetic nose, deeming it the latest example of Hollywood’s stereotypical or inauthentic portrayal of Jewish people, known as “Jewface.”
But in a statement posted to Bernstein’s Twitter account, the late conductor’s children defended Cooper’s decision to “use makeup to amplify his resemblance” to their father. Cooper directed “Maestro” and stars as Bernstein opposite Carey Mulligan as Montealegre.
“Bradley Cooper included the three of us along every step of his amazing journey as he made his film about our father,” wrote Jamie, Alexander and Nina Bernstein. “We were touched to the core to witness the depth of his commitment, his loving embrace of our father’s music, and the sheer open-hearted joy he brought to his exploration.

The Guardian has deleted and apologized for a Martin Rowson cartoon of outgoing BBC Chairman Richard Sharp after the image was accused of evoking anti-Semitic tropes.
The British broadsheet newspaper removed the cartoon from its website on Saturday following a social media backlash, in which figures from the Jewish community voiced their shock.
Sharp resigned as the BBC’s Chairman on Friday after he failed to properly declare his role in facilitating an £800,000 ($1M) loan guarantee for former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Rowson’s illustration pictured a grinning caricature of Sharp, who is Jewish. He has an enlarged nose and is carrying a Goldman Sachs office box, apparently stuffed with gold and a squid.
The Goldman Sachs box is a reference to Sharp’s former employer, which was famously described by Rolling Stone as “a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel...

British television is brutal. The job security of actors, even in leading roles, is perilous. From the urtext, Spooks, where everyone from Keeley Hawes to Matthew Macfadyen cut their teeth, through to ITV’s returning Monday night drama, Unforgotten, writers have always been willing to throw their characters under the bus (sometimes literally). The challenge, then, is reacclimating audiences, once the dust settles, to a very different version of the same old show.
Back for its fifth season, Unforgotten is still reeling from the death of Nicola Walker’s Cassie Stuart. Di Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) is grieving, while incoming Dci Jessie James (Sinéad Keenan) is met by a rather cold shoulder. She doesn’t help herself: at home, her family life is falling apart, and the new gig couldn’t come at a worse time. Both she and Sunny are thinking of chucking it all in: Sunny is interrupted...

For anyone else who spotted a familiar face on It's a Sin, you're not alone. Tracy Ann Oberman, otherwise known as Aunty Val from Friday Night Dinner, does indeed make an appearance on the show. Formerly known for playing Jackie (Tamsin Greig)'s best friend, and aunty to boys Adam (Simon Bird) and Jonny (Tom Rosenthal), she became a familiar favorite throughout the zany sitcom's six seasons. Oberman is known for her starring role on EastEnders, while she's also made appearances in Ricky Gervais's hilariously sad After Life, Toast of London, and Doctor Who, marking the first time she's worked with with It's a Sin producer Russell T Davies.
On It's a Sin, Oberman plays Carol Carter, a talent agent who seeks to help Ritchie (played by Olly Alexander) get his big break. Set in the 1980s, the show explores the effect of HIV and AIDS on London's West End performers,...

Olly Alexander, Keeley Hawes and Neil Patrick Harris are set to star in “Boys,” a new series from “Queer as Folk” creator Russell T. Davies that charts the lives of a group of young gay men who find themselves caught up in the blooming AIDS epidemic of the 1980s.
The five-part series starts filming next week, under director Peter Hoar (“The Last Kingdom”), and is expected to air on Britain’s Channel 4 in 2020. “Boys” is being produced by Nicola Shindler’s banner, Red, a unit of Studiocanal.

Continually stretching his acting muscles, John Malkovich brings a gravitas few other actors can offer. For Casanova Variations, which is finally getting a release today after touring festivals, the actor gets experimental in meta fashion. Coming from director Michael Sturminger, the story follows Italy’s infamous womanizer Giacomo Casanova in what has been described as cinematic adaptation of a “chamber opera play.”
However, that’s only one strand of the story, as it also stars Malkovich preparing for the stage play, with references of his past work. Today we’re pleased to premiere an exclusive from the film, which depicts a scene from the performance, leading to a duel. Looking like a playful retelling of the Italian adventurer’s life, as well as an ideal showcase for Malkovich’s chops, see our exclusive clip below along with the trailer for the film also starring Veronica Ferres, Florian Boesch, Miah Persson,...

The BBC’s Sunday announcement that Jodie Whittaker would take over the lead role in hit series Doctor Who has been met with a mix of praise for the actress and criticism of the decision to cast a female Time Lord.
“I always knew I wanted the 13th Doctor to be a woman,” Chris Chibnall, the show’s new head writer and executive producer, said Sunday. “We’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice.”
On Sunday, Whittaker herself had urged fans “not to be scared by my gender.”
Tracy-Ann Oberman, who has appeared in Doctor Who in the past, wrote: "A generation of young Whovians who will now know that as a female in the Universe you don't have to be the assistant."

Fervently adored in their homeland, most of Europe, and, Japan, the Moomins might be less of a household name for American audiences, but the lack of familiarity should in no way hinder their enjoyment. The characters created by Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson originally appeared in 1945 when the first book on their adventures was published. Since then, the Moomins have endured over 60 years of a fast-changing world and countless iterations including a long-running comic strip, stage productions, animated series in various technique from traditional to stop-motion and 3D/CGI, and even a live-action broadcast with suit actors.
The love for these endearing charmers is such that entire shops a la Disney Store dedicated to all things Moomins exist across Europe and a themed park, appropriately named Moomin World, is one of the main attractions in the town of Naantali, Finland. Not surprisingly when Xavier Picard and Hanna Hemilä’s "Moomins on the Riviera" opened across the pond late last year fans of all ages were delighted. Since the hand-drawn animated film is the Moomins first appearance on any audiovisual medium in over a decade,is evident that the need for some Moomin warmth had to be quenched.
Those unacquainted with the plump, huggable, and hippopotamus-like characters (although Moominpappa assures us scientists have proven there is no relationship between Moomins and hippopotami), are sure to be enchanted by their kindness and disarmingly positive attitude. But regardless of how savvy or not one is about them, “Moomins on the Riviera” can either be a terrific introduction to their unpretentiously magical world or a heartwarming reminder of why we’ve fallen heads over heels for their picturesque exploits.
Picard’s tight 78-minute film encounters the protagonists in a colorful natural environment avidly baptized Moomin Valley, a place where they peacefully coexist with other fairytale and forest creatures. Tender and lovable as can be, the family includes the nonchalant top hat-wearing patriarch Moominpappa (Nathaniel Parker), the caring Moominmamma (Tracy-Ann Oberman) who is a gardener at heart, their brave but apprehensive son Moomin (Russell Tovey), and his romance-obsessed girlfriend Snorkmaiden (Stephanie Winiecki). Their existence is humble as they find pleasure in the simple things their fertile land provides and each other’s company.
If one thing is true about the Moomins is that they are joyful folks without a hint of malice in their heart, so when a pirate ship crashes near the shore they only way they know how to deal with is by welcoming them with open arms. This is when we meets one of the property’s most memorable characters, Little My (Ruth Gibson), an energetic little human girl with an acid sense of humor. She steals every scene with humorous comments that often veer into the darkest shades of comedy, which swiftly contrast with the Moomins ever-present friendliness.
As a result of their meeting with the group of clumsy pirates and persuasive magazine article, the Moomins embark on a trip to the sun-drenched Côte d'Azur. Dangerous storms and a barren island aren’t enough to defeat the tight-knit clan’s resolve. Once on the lavish Riviera the Moomins check into a fabulous hotel as the “De Moomins,” which prompts the staff to believe they are royals from a far away land. They cater to their every need under the assumption that money is not a problem, unaware that the concept of currency is foreign to the eccentric new arrivals. Inspired by a famous socialite named Audrey Glamour (Shelley Blond), Snorkmaiden rapidly becomes accustomed to the wealthy lifestyle and fits right in with the other glamorous guests. For the rest of the family the transition is not as smooth and tensions rise as a sophisticated fellow tries to steal Snorkmaiden’s heart and Moominpappa’s new friend, an aristocrat who wishes to be an artist, get them in more than a little trouble with the authorities.
Elegantly executed like a delicate storybook, the hand-drawn frames employ pastel hues, peculiar backgrounds, and seemingly modest character design that maintain the timeless quality of the Moomin universe. There are no frantic displays of high-stakes action or an epic journey to save the world from its destruction, yet the Moomins might have better lessons teach us in order to save humanity from its destruction than a score of rugged superheroes. While everyone around them treats them differently based on their presumed status, the Moomins remain easygoing and uniquely themselves. In fact, is such the divide between the pastoral fellows and the outlandish patrons, that their innate compassion becomes alluring to those who treasure financial wealth above all.
The Moomins every action reflects Jansson ‘s thoughtful intention, channeled now by Picard, to create characters that embody the best in mankind and who aim to preserve the shared beauty of the world. When everything in the Riviera bears a sign that reads “Private,” Moominmamma builds an open garden free for everyone to enjoy. Indeed sharing is caring. When the shipwreck happens, what the Moomins save is not the gold and jewels but the tropical seeds, the books, and the fireworks. These are things with more value than shiny coins. And then the pirates ask why they keep their dirty dishes under a couch; their immediate response is to explain they must wait for the rain to wash them. “Moomins on the Riviera” is not the blockbuster animated film of the year, but one with some of the wisest characters with lots of down-to-earth philosophy to share. It’s a tiny marvel. If more of us would follow the Moomins’ teachings, who knows what our own valley could be.

"Moomins on the Riviera" opens today in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Royal...

The hand-drawn animation is serene and charming, but the story and characters are so unpleasantly retrograde that I found little enjoyment here. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Maybe it’s because I was not introduced to the beloved Moomins when I was a child. But I don’t see the attraction. Sure, Finnish cartoonist Tove Jansson’s family of hippo-like creatures are odd but gentle bohemians, which should theoretically appeal to me. Yes, the hand-drawn animation is more serene than the CGI onslaught that modern animation tends to be; it’s simple yet charming and reflects the colors and esthetics of the time when this story first appeared in British newspaper comic strips in 1955 (even though the original strips where in black-and-white, of course). But the story and characters are unpleasantly retrograde,...

★★★☆☆ Nicely timed to coincide with the currently under way Cannes Film Festival, Moomins on the Riviera (2014) - based on Tove Jansson's beloved books and comic strip - takes the eccentric hippo-like creatures outside of their comfort zone for a softly sweet fantasy adventure. In need of a change of pace and scenery from their idyllic valley home, Moomin (Russell Tovey), Moominpappa (Nathaniel Parker), Moominmamma (Tracy Ann Oberman) and Snorkmaiden (Stephanie Winiecki) head to the South of France. The sun-kissed, celebrity-packed beaches quickly catch the attention of Moominpappa and Snorkmaiden, who both lavish in the surroundings and attentions of others.

Birthed on screen in 1959, the Moomins are as old as Barbie and Ben-Hur (the Charlton Heston one) and with a movie in the pipeline, almost as enduring. The cute hippo-like critters are starring in their own movie, Moomins On The Riviera, and have a new trailer full of Moomin-y antics. brightcove.createExperiences();Runs the synopsis (because it’s way beyond our understanding): "In search of adventures, the Moomins, Snorkmaiden and Little My set sail for the French Riviera. After a perilous journey, they reach their dream destination where Snorkmaiden is dazzled by the attentions of a playboy leaving Moomin consumed by jealousy. When Moominpappa befriends an aristocrat and adopts the name ‘de Moomin’, an exasperated Moominmamma retreats to the calm of their trusty old boat, to wait for her family to come to their senses and to remember their motto: 'Live in peace, plant potatoes and dream.’"The Moomins...

From the Queen Vic to the Tardis. As Eastenders prepares to mark its 30th anniversary, we look back at its encounters with Doctor Who...
Back in the mid-eighties an actor who played "Third Assistant" in a Doctor Who story called The Savages (1966) and the director of another Doctor Who adventure, The Underwater Menace (1967), came together to create one of the BBC’s most successful television shows.
And when they got together, it was murder. Well, not quite. (Though the first episode did feature a victim who would later die, fact fans.) But what they did create was Eastenders.
Broadcast on February the 19th 1985 (in between episodes one and two of The Two Doctors), this creation of Who alumni would go on to share numerous links with the long-running science-fiction for years to come. Even its time-slot owes much to the adventures of everyone’s favourite Gallifreyan.

Looking for a handy guide to 2015's biggest animated movies, from Shaun The Sheep to Minions and Peanuts? Then step this way...
There have been far better years for family entertainment, and for animated films, than 2014. Whilst there have been highlights - Paddington, The Wind Rises, How To Train Your Dragon 2, The Boxtrolls - the mix of material on offer hasn't particularly sparkled.
A quick glance at the 2015 release schedule suggests, to a degree, the same, with some notably absentees from the year's releases. And yet as we dug deeper for our traditional look ahead at the year's animated films, there might just be some real treats here. Starting with this one...
Strange Magic
Let's start with one of the wildcards. A film that only recently arrived on the 2015 release schedules is Strange Magic, which belatedly marks the feature directing debut for Gary Rydstrom.

Channel 4 knows it's onto a good thing with Matt Berry's Toast Of London, which has just been renewed for series 3...
Here's some cheering news for comedy fans: Matt Berry's ace, critically acclaimed sitcom Toast Of London is returning to Channel 4 for a third run.
The series, which has been an awards magnet since its one-off debut episode arrived as part of Channel 4's Funny Fortnight in 2012, follows the adventures of actor Stephen Toast (Berry) and co-stars Doon Mackichan, Robert Bathurst, Tracy-Ann Oberman and Harry Peacock.
Toast Of London recently concluded its second series on Channel 4, with its first episode having drawn a consolidated audience of 582k, rising to over 1 milllion with the addition of the Friday night repeat. Those numbers and a heap of goodwill obviously made Channel 4's decision for them, and hooray for that.
