What would you expect from a Slasher directed by Jess Franco? The chances are it would feature nudity, be bloody and feel different from the rest of the films that were being churned out in the eighties. Bloody Moon is just that, and may just be one of Franco’s best films.
Severin Films have released this full uncut version of the film and the first thing you notice is the impressive picture quality. There are some scenes where the quality does dip, but it is safe to assume that these are ones that had been cut out and were later added in. One of the most infamous scenes, the ‘stone mill power saw’ sequence doesn’t suffer...

What are widely considered to be the finest works of late, great Euro-cult master Jess Franco’s labyrinthine career, his 1971 erotic horrors Vampyros Lesbos and She Killed in Ecstasy have long been sought after by cult cinema collectors. Now, for the first time ever in the UK, the fully restored, uncensored versions of both films will be available in Special Editions from Severin Films.
Both films star the bewitching beauty Soledad Miranda, who was tragically killed before either film was released, and achieved additional cult status thanks to the sexadelic, ultra groovy soundtrack that became an unexpected dance floor hit three decades after original release.
Vampyros Lesbos has already had successful and acclaimed theatrical screenings in the UK ahead of these releases, and the time is set for the extraordinary work of the mercurial Franco to reach out to a brand new audience. Featuring newly created cover art by Wes Benscoter,...

The weird and wonderful work of controversial genre filmmaking legend Jesus "Jess" Franco came to my attention via an article in Fangoria, the periodical I currently write for. I was in the late 80's and I was in my early teens and one of my favorite Fango scribes, Tim Lucas, had scribbled a piece based on his intrepid investigations into the serpentine oeuvre of the elusive Eurotrash auteur. It was a fascinating column – the first of an ongoing series that would bleed over into Fango's sister magazine, Gorezone – that attempted to differentiate between authentic "Franco's", those he merely had a hand in creatively and the myriad of none-to-clever forgeries.
Reading Lucas's words was akin to following a sort of cinema obsessed Indiana Jones down a spiraling wormhole of weird movie bliss. It was my first master class in the mind boggling world of vintage international exploitation filmmaking and perhaps more profoundly,...

With Halloween right around the corner we're getting a stack of cult and foreign scare flicks finally getting released on DVD. The fine people at Synapse Films are releasing a trio of previously tough to track down flicks; Patrick, Dark Forces, and Thirst while Jesse Franco's Devil Hunter and Bloody Moon are getting the royal treatment from Severin.
We've also got a slew of Qe faves Poutrygeist, and Isidro Ortizs' Shiver (Eskalofro). The oddly enjoyable Zombie Strippers premieres on unrated DVD along with Anchor Bay's animated Dead Space: Downfall.
Rounding off the list of must sees this week are; the Tarantino produced Hell Ride, Red, and 13 Hours in a Warehouse. More goodies like trailers and links after the break.
