Here at JoBlo Horror Originals we talk a lot about gateway horror films. Depending on the generation you belong to, that can be a few different things. Kids of the 70s will always have Jaws as an introduction to horror and that movie is still a great way to introduce newer generations to the genre after almost 50 years. Two of my favorites from the 80’s, and two films that both my sons have seen, are The Gate and The Monster Squad. Again, both great and both still hold up as not only fun horror flicks but great ways to ease in the younger crowd. As a kid born in 1985, I am much more a child of the 90s so even if you hadn’t read the title of the video you clicked, you could probably guess that I saw Jurassic Park in theaters, it scared and enthralled me and made me want more.

Horror films are designed to be exciting. The scares tend to work better with a surge of adrenaline, and the same techniques that feed action movies can make for very effective horror with just a few tweaks. Certain tropes readily work with both, such as chase scenes. Also, the action movie trope of a cart and mouse scene in a building between protagonist and antagonist easily lends itself to the horror genre.
It's no surprise that action-packed monster movies embrace both genres, and some of the greatest genre films stand almost perfectly balanced between the two. Action-horror movies often make a great introduction to scary movies for newcomers. The best of them also hold up well to multiple viewings by remaining as exciting and enjoyable the 20th time as the first. These films also include several classics by some of the most noted directors in the medium.

As tastes change, some movies can fall out of fashion, but a rare few actually improve as the years pass. There is no shortage of movies which have aged poorly. Even some which were once considered classics, such as Breakfast at Tiffany's, Annie Hall and Dumbo, have some problematic elements which mean they aren't as popular now as they once were. Not very many movies actually get better with age.
For a movie to get better with age, it helps if it has an original streak. Time is often kind to more creative movies which break the mold, as they eventually find an audience that appreciates them. They can also become trendsetters, and their scores of imitators only serve to highlight the quality of the original. This also happens with exceptional movies that start long-running franchises, since these franchises can spend years trying and failing to recapture what makes the original so unique.

Over 30 years after the release of Jurassic Park, Jeff Goldblum has finally explained why Steven Spielberg changed elements of his character from Michael Crichton's novel. Goldblum plays Dr. Ian Malcolm in Spielberg's seminal 1993 movie. As well as uttering the famous lines, "Life, uh, finds a way," and "That is one big pile of sh*t," Ian is the reason Alan (Sam Neill), Ellie (Laura Dern), and the two children survive the iconic T. rex attack. In the novel, Ian Malcom acts as Crichton's mouthpiece to the events unfolding in the park. But Spielberg's movie makes a noticeable change to the character.

Hollywood has grown more reliant on special effects, but practical effects can provide an authentic feel. Classic movies like Jurassic Park balance practical and CGI effects for incredible scenes. 2001: A Space Odyssey, Independence Day, and It used practical effects for iconic moments, boosting realism.
Older and more recent movies alike occasionally utilize practical effects that might as well be CGI with how realistic they look. Since this technology became more widely available, Hollywood has arguably become too dependent on special effects. Some movies are completely overwhelmed by green screen settings and motion capture characters, resulting in an overall feeling of it being fake, even if nothing in particular looks all that bad. The best way to avoid weird CGI moments people can't unsee is to stick to practical effects.

Michael Crichton's partnership with Steven Spielberg led to critical success, starting with Jurassic Park. Crichton's foresight into science fiction themes attracted lucrative adaptations in film & television. Crichton transformed from a struggling filmmaker to a golden goose revered for his futuristic storytelling.
Directors like Steven Spielberg have long sought source work from the literary world, hoping to adapt great works of science fiction into feature films. Even a generational directing talent like Spielberg required a writing voice that could use real-world science to explain the fantastical events in a science fiction film. Luckily, early in Spielberg's career as a TV director he met just such a writer, Michael Crichton.
Crichton wrote the source novels and script drafts for some of the most successful franchises in film and TV, including Jurassic Park, the 1973 movie Westworld, the 1996 hit Twister, and the 15-season-long medical series ER. Crichton came from an impressive academic pedigree,...

When you think of the theatrical summer behemoth that is Jurassic Park, the very last thing you think of is its script by David Koepp. The Steven Spielberg-led film about dinosaurs brought back to life with horrific consequences was a massive hit for Universal Pictures.
The film cleverly blended adventure and action with horror and sci-fi in an unstoppable vehicle that completely changed the way we saw movies in 1993. Special effects were no longer a beautiful experiment. They were part of the magic.
And again, the script behind Jurassic Park is often the least thing people remember about it, which is very unfortunate. The screenplay, based on Michael Crichton's novel of the same name, was helmed by David Koepp, a fascinating case of a writer capable of writing blockbuster films who seldom gets mentioned when films become successful.

Steven Spielberg made dinosaur noises on the set of Jurassic Park to cue the cast's reactions. Sam Neill and Laura Dern recalled humorous memories of Spielberg's "terrifying" roars while pretending to be a T-Rex or Velociraptor during filming. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director J.A. Bayona provided actors with dinosaur sounds during filming, a noticeable difference from Spielberg's dinosaur impersonations.

Muldoon's death scene in Jurassic Park is iconic and adds to the thrilling nature of the film, but it also creates a plot hole that is left unresolved by the end of the movie. The film's groundbreaking CGI, suspenseful storytelling, and strong cast contribute to its enduring legacy, but they can't overshadow the plot hole left by Muldoon's abandonment. Despite the oversight, leaving Muldoon behind adds to the narrative and pacing of the movie, heightening the stakes for the characters and creating a sense of survival in the dangerous environment of Jurassic Park.

One thing that distinguishes 1993's Jurassic Park from a host of other Steven Spielberg films from the late 1980s and early 1990s is the cast. Unlike most blockbusters of the period, Spielberg opted to stay away from big names: Sam Neill's most prominent Hollywood role prior to his outing as Alan Grant had been opposite Sean Connery as the second-in-command of a Soviet submarine in The Hunt for Red October (1990), while Laura Dern – now bona fide Hollywood royalty – had only lately come to prominence with performances in dramas such as Fat Man and Little Boy (1989) and Rambling Rose (1991).
This approach extended to the film's supporting cast, with only Richard Attenborough (Hammond) and, to a lesser extent, a pre-Independence Day Jeff Goldblum (Malcolm) having big-name recognition. It's no wonder that three other members of the cast get surprisingly little acknowledgment from audiences – despite the fact that their pitch-perfect work in...

Jurassic Park's most iconic moments feature the Velociraptors and the T-Rex, but it's the human characters that make the scenes memorable, and their absence in the sequels is why they failed. The original 1993 movie was revolutionary, as no other action movie had seamlessly intertwined digital and practical effects. While it's a little more obvious now, at the time, it was impossible to decipher between the two. Seeing the gigantic creatures on the big screen was jaw-dropping, and there had been nothing like it before, and there hasn't been much like it since, not even in the sequels.
However, while the dinosaurs are undeniably a big appeal of the franchise, it's easy to overlook the real heroes, Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), and John Hammond (Richard Attenborough). Robert Muldoon's (Bob Peck) death in Jurassic Park is one of the most controversial, as the character doesn't die in the book and he arguably didn't deserve to be killed. While the original 1993 Jurassic Park is full of human-eating dinosaurs, there are only three major on-screen deaths in the film, after the terrifying opening. The first is Donald Gennaro (Martin Ferrero), the lawyer who gets eaten by the T-Rex, and the second is Dennis Nedry (Wayne Knight), the disgruntled park employee who is killed by a Dilophosaurus. But while audiences don't exactly empathize with those deaths given how malicious and vindictive the characters are, one that has always felt somewhat underserved is Muldoon's death.
Muldoon is Jurassic Park's bravest character, as he's the militant warden of Jurassic Park who is hired by John Hammond, but he's killed by a velociraptor in one of the movie's most intense scenes.

A real-life Jurassic Park is not outside the realm of possibility, at least according to Elon Musk's business partner Max Hodak. The co-founder of Musk's company Neuralink, Hodak has created a bit of a stir with a recent tweet posted on his official Twitter account. While it's difficult to determine the seriousness of the tweet, Hodak seems to suggest that Neuralink has the necessary funds and technology to theoretically build Jurassic Park.

Forget the initial, awe-inspiring dinosaur reveal as John Williams' incredible score swells, or the Tyrannosaurus Rex chase scene, or even the oft-memed Jeff Goldblum shirtless scene, the most iconic moment in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park is when Samuel L. As if the line was not good enough all on its own, there is even a delightful anecdote to go along with it, which the movie's writer David Koepp recently revealed.
"One is a very simple line, it's only four words, but I like the way it came to be in the movie in that people liked it. I was finishing Death Becomes Her when I was writing Jurassic Park, and we had an ending that was really disastrous at first from one of these horrible test screenings where they almost kill you.""So we'd very quickly gone out...

Jurassic Park was originally released in 1993, but new behind-the-scenes information is still coming out about the Steven Spielberg classic. As revealed in newly-unearthed storyboards from the movie, park owner John Hammond was originally supposed to die. In the scene, Hammond is hiding away in Visitor Center's Control Room after the dinosaurs break free from their enclosures. He is standing near a tabletop model of the park when a velociraptor barges in and tackles him onto the table, ripping him apart on a miniature version of the resort. The attack would have also broken an incubator with eggs, which is a moment that didn't make it into the final product either.
For those who've read the original novel by Michael Crichton, it won't be surprising to know John Hammond was meant to be killed off. The character dies in the book as well in a demise that seems even more unpleasant.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom arrived in theaters this summer and was a giant blockbuster hit. But it still can't quite compete with the original classic Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1994. Younger fans who've never gotten to experience that first exciting sci-fi dino thriller the way it was meant to be seen are in luck, as Jurassic Park is stomping its way back to a theater near you very soon.
Few films have excited a generation of moviegoers as much as Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. In honor of its 25th anniversary, Fathom Events and Universal Pictures are bringing Spielberg's revolutionary 1993 action-adventure film back to movie theaters nationwide this September.
Jurassic Park will play in more than 500 movie theaters across the U.S. on Sunday, September 16, at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (local time); and at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18, and Wednesday, September 19. Tickets...

It doesn't matter how many times you watch Jurassic Park (thanks, ITV2!), Steven Spielberg's '90s dinosaur classic still has the ability to conjure up feelings of awe and wonder.
22 years on from Jurassic Park's original release - and with sequel Jurassic World in cinemas now - we go back to where it all began to pick out the best moments from the trailblazing blockbuster.
1. "Welcome to Jurassic Park!"
Spielberg keeps Jurassic Park's big dino reveal under wraps so that the lead characters - Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) - discover the prehistoric characters as the audience does. "Welcome to Jurassic Park!" Richard Attentborough's John Hammond exclaims as we watch a pair of Brontosauri striding majestically through a lake.
2. "I'm simply saying that life finds a way."

I am the prime demographic for this movie, and I found it only sort of inoffensively blah. Chris Pratt: He’s no Jeff Goldblum. I’m “biast” (pro): love love love love love the original trilogy (yes, all of them)
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I cried, my geek peeps. I cried at the opening of Jurassic World. Not at the bit where a baby dino cracks itself out of an egg, though that is awesome and in the world of this movie you know that someone has created @EmergencyCuteDinoBabies on Twitter and it is Everything.
No, I cried at the helicopter shot swooping in over Jurassic World — the park is open! — because I want this to be real. Why isn’t it real? Why haven’t we scienced into existence dinosaurs right outta the past? I know...

My journey with Jurassic Park has its ups and downs. I was just a shade over 16-years-old when the film hit theaters in 1993 and my interest in the movie was sparked by having read Michael Crichton's novel from which it was based. To ask me now, I couldn't detail the differences versus the book and the film (though this video helps with that) other than to remember the book featured a lot more dinosaurs and was a bit more mature than Steven Spielberg's adaptation, from a screenplay co-written by Crichton and David Koepp (Angels & Demons, Spider-Man). So, that summer in June, myself and three friends ventured into the theater to see dinosaurs come to life and that's what we got. Perhaps it was my age, perhaps it was having read the books, but I remember being vaguely underwhelmed, though at the same time I remember pretending I had...

Jurassic Park
Written by Michael Crichton and David Koepp
Directed by Steven Spielberg
USA, 1993
“What have they got in there, King Kong”, quips Dr. Ian Malcolm as a computer-driven Land Cruiser slides along its railed path through a massive wooden gate that is designed to look prehistoric, welcoming them to “Jurassic Park”. Billionaire John Hammond has done the impossible and brought dinosaurs back from extinction—then built a park around them as cheesy as any zoo attraction or Disney theme park.
For many who came of age around 1993, both the novel and the movie Jurassic Park are likely to both be pop culture milestone experiences. The film is a beautiful marriage of material and talent, bringing to life a childhood dinosaur fantasy with state of the art filmmaking technology. Steven Spielberg had been refining his instincts as both a director and producer of some of the best family-friendly adventures of the previous decade,...

The opening of the world’s most dangerous theme park, Jurassic World, is less than six months away and after that explosive first teaser, that feels like six months too long. Along with the classic dino staples, the preview offered a whole new Jurassic experience for the seasoned fan. Perhaps the most controversial – and by that we mean, utterly badass – moment arose towards the end of the trailer in which Chris Pratt’s dino expert releases a row of caged raptors. And they charge alongside him while he cruises through the jungle on a motorbike in pursuit of an even bigger hybrid dino that’s been set loose.

Arriving earlier than expected, Universal has debuted the first trailer for Jurassic World in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. And with it comes our first real look at this true sequel to the 1993 original Jurassic Park directed by Steven Spielberg. While Spielberg is back as a producer this time out, the reigns have been handed over to Colin Trevorrow, best known for his low budget time travel comedy Safety Not Guaranteed. Word is still out on whether this will live up to the standards set by beloved franchise, but there is no denying that the footage is exciting, beautifully shot, and holds quite a few surprises of its own. It also carefully plays to our nostalgia for the first movie, which is now more than twenty years old. Paying homage to classic shots, and bringing back some important visual references, this first Jurassic World sneak peek recalls what has come before it like a champ.

Every once in a while, a television drama comes along that perfectly encapsulates the mood of the time in which it was made. In the 1980s - a decade best remembered in the United Kingdom for Thatcherism and the omnipresent threat of nuclear war - that drama was Edge of Darkness.
With its 30th anniversary fast approaching, Troy Kennedy Martin's eco-thriller is being afforded a welcome repeat showing on BBC Four - starting tonight (June 30) at 10pm.
Edge of Darkness - a six-part serial - is the story of Ronnie Craven, a Yorkshire police detective who initiates an off-the-books enquiry into his daughter's murder, only to discover that her death has broader political implications.
Soon, Craven is drawn into a world of corrupt politics and eco-terrorism, culminating in an ill-fated excursion into a radioactive waste facility known as 'Northmoor' - the hub of a power-hungry plot by malevolent forces.

Ever since Jurassic World was first announced, fans have been wondering if any of the Jurassic Park cast members will be coming back. Director Colin Trevorrow confirmed that one of the original actors will be making a return, although it might not be someone you expect.
Here's what the filmmaker had to say in an interview with IGN.
"I know a lot of fans want to see the original characters back. They're iconic. But I respect those actors too much to shoehorn them into this story for my own sentimental reasons. Jurassic Park isn't about the bad luck of three people who keep getting thrown into the same situation. The only reason they'd go back to that island is if the screenwriters contrived a reason for them to go. But there is a character from the first film who makes sense in our world. This hasn't been announced yet, but B.

Tom Hiddleston is a talented, talented man. This won't come as a shock to many – the British actor is currently winning raves for his Coriolanus in the West End, has made himself indispensable to the Marvel Universe despite originally being conceived as a one-shot villain, and is gearing up to star in Guillermo del Toro and Ben Wheatley's next projects.

'If I'm wrong, I'm insane. If I'm right, it's worse': in conspiracy films – from Rosemary's Baby to State of Play – solving the crime does not bring peace. Michael Newton investigates a rich cinematic genre
Some believe that JFK was shot by his driver, some that Bobby Kennedy was killed by one of his guards; some believe the world is ruled by a Yale fraternity, some by lizard-aliens in disguise; some believe that Obama is a Communist mole; some that, back in 1966, Paul McCartney died. These notions are, at best, deluded; but as potential pitches for an as yet unmade Hollywood movie, they might just secure the contract. For, in movies, you can believe that the moon shots were faked, or that men are replacing their wives with compliant robots, or that space shuttles are firing earthquake-inducing weapons, or that the world itself is a delusion – and in each case you could be proved right.

Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park is one of the best film adaptations of a novel ever, one of the best monster movies ever, one of the best displays of FX wizardry ever, one of the best summer blockbusters ever, and one of the best sci-fi/horror movies ever. Jurassic Park is one of the best films, period.
Predictably, the two sequels failed to live up to that insane level of precedent, and for the most part, managed to piss people off.
