Made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1950 at the age of 19 as Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni.

Appeared on the Ed Sullivan show (The Ed Sullivan Show (1948)) a record 65 times.

She was awarded the American National Medal of the Arts in 1998 from the National Endowment of the Arts in Washington, DC.

The daughter of Ruth (Hersch) and Solomon Peterman, Roberta Peters was of Russian Jewish and Austrian Jewish descent.
