“Win or Lose,” Pixar’s first original, long-form series for Disney+, was previewed at 2022’s D23 and again last summer at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France. And then … crickets.

Disney+ customers can start streaming Pixar’s “Elemental” animated adventure next week.

“Elemental” will hit Disney+ worldwide on Sept. 13, coming 89 days after the movie’s theatrical open. Alongside the streaming premiere of “Elemental,” Disney+ also will debut that day the making-of documentary “Good Chemistry: The Story of Elemental,” as well as Pixar Animation Studios short “Carl’s Date,” featuring the fan-favorite talking dog Dug from 2009’s “Up.”

At the box office, “Elemental” stumbled out of the gate with the worst opening weekend in Pixar’s history — before rebounding over the subsequent theatrical run. In 11 weeks, the film grossed $153.6 million domestically with a global haul of $480 million, per Box Office Mojo.

“Elemental” is set in Element City, where Fire, Water, Earth and Air residents live together. The feature film introduces Ember (voiced by Leah Lewis), whose friendship with a fun and sappy guy named Wade (Mamoudou Athie) challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.

The last few years of Pixar have been rather dispiriting. I don't mean this in terms of quality. Far from it. "Soul," "Turning Red," and "Luca" have ranged from good to great, continuing to show a studio brimming with imagination as newer voices come into the mix. When I say they have been dispiriting, I mean it from a business sense, as under the Bob Chapek regime of Disney the company was relegated to a being a content farm for Disney+. Every year, a Pixar movie was an event, and because nothing can become an event on a streaming service, Pixar's specialness has wasted away. Their first film back in theaters was "Lightyear" and it was a financial disaster. They have "Elemental" releasing this June, and the early box office tracking for it isn't promising.

Among the layoffs that took place at the Walt Disney Company were job cuts at Pixar that included the director and producer of Lightyear, Deadline has confirmed.

Director Angus MacLane, a 26-year animator who was part of the Senior Creative Team in animated films like Coco, Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4, was cut from the studio in late May, which was part of the 7,000 layoffs Disney had planned. Galyn Susman, who had been at the studio since the original Toy Story was released in 1995, was also part of the cuts.

There was a total of 75 jobs that were made redundant on May 23, Reuters first reported. It’s worth noting that cuts at the animation studio are rare and the last time it happened was in 2013 when The Good Dinosaur was delayed. At the time, 5% of Pixar’s 1,200 workforce was cut, including director Bob Peterson.

One of the biggest blockbuster hits of 2003 was the Pixar animated feature “Finding Nemo,” featuring the voice talents of Albert Brooks and Ellen Degeneres, and directed by Andrew Stanton. It was Pixar’s fifth feature following “Toy Story,” “A Bug’s Life,” “Toy Story 2” and “Monsters, Inc.” Released two decades ago on May 30, 2003, “Finding Nemo” was a box office smash, making $70 million its opening weekend in the United States and eventually reaching $380 million nationwide and $941 million worldwide. Ready to cry your eyes out again? Because there’s a new “Up” short film from Pixar that should do the trick.

“Carl’s Date,” a short film produced after the series of “Up”-based shorts called “Dug Days” that premiered on Disney+ in 2021, will get the big screen treatment this June. The short is set to appear before “Elemental,” the new Pixar feature from Peter Sohn (who partially inspired the character of Russell in “Up”), and features Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) get ready for his first date since Ellie passed away. It is deeply touching and hilarious and appropriate as a preamble for “Elemental,” which focuses on the love story between two very opposite characters – one made of fire and the other made of water.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, Carl from "Up" is trying his hand at modern dating in the upcoming Disney+ short film "Dug Days: Carl's Date," premiering on the streamer on Feb. 10. The short, which is part of the "Dug Days" animated series, will find Carl going on his first date since the death of his beloved wife, Ellie.

In addition to "Carl's Date" representing a big - and sure to be emotional - step forward for the widower, it also marks Disney's first return to the "Up" universe since Ed Asner, the voice of Carl, died at age 91 in August 2021. At this time, it's unclear if Asner recorded the voicework for the short before his death or if the role of Carl has been recast. Popsugar reached out to Disney+ for comment on casting information for the short but did not receive an immediate response.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has published its list of the 101 greatest screenplays of the 21st century, topped by Jordan Peele’s “Get Out.” Peele won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay with the script for his horror movie, which also marked his solo feature directorial debut. Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning “Parasite” screenplay cracked the WGA’s top five along with Charlie Kaufman’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Network,” and the Coen Brothers’ “No Country for Old Men.” All of these aforementioned films won screenwriting Oscars.

To infinity and beyond! Disney and Pixar have debuted the action-packed first trailer for “Lightyear,” the upcoming “Toy Story” prequel that tells the origin story of the real Buzz Lightyear. Tim Allen famously voiced Buzz in the four “Toy Story” movies, but it’s Captain America himself, Chris Evans, that’s taking on the role of Buzz in “Lightyear.”

The official synopsis from Disney reads: “The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear — the hero who inspired the toy — introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.”

Bye bye, summer! September is here and Disney+ is getting some new content for you to enjoy as the leaves start to change colors. This week Pixar debuts “Dug Days” on Disney+: five animated shorts reuniting “Up’s” grumpy widower Carl with his excitable Golden Retriever, Dug, who can talk with a voice-activated collar. It’s a warm and funny series of misadventures for Dug (voiced by creator/director Bob Peterson), made all the more noteworthy as a result of last week’s passing of 91-year-old Ed Asner. He voiced Carl with his typical gruff exterior to hide a more affable nature. Yet it’s especially sweet to see Asner end his career on a high note in “Dug Days,” with Carl settling into a more relaxed comfort zone.

“Carl is laid back and at peace,” Peterson said. “You can tell the way he stands and the fact that he doesn’t wear his jacket; he’s doing woodworking now. I think his adventure was successful.”

Focus Features has set up the first Oscars FYC special screening and conversation of the awards season for Tom McCarthy’s “Stillwater” with star Matt Damon and the writer and director scheduled to attend in-person at the 350-seat Harmony Gold Theater in Los Angeles.

AMPAS members received an invitation on Wednesday for the special screening and conversation that will take place on Sunday, Aug. 1, with an option to bring a guest. The invite included an asterisk at the bottom of the email stating, “masks must be worn inside the theater.” No other additional information was included in the email regarding theater capacity, vaccinations or any social distancing requirements or protocols.

Mike and Sulley are back and now in charge of turning scares into laughter in the first trailer for Disney+’s Pixar series “Monsters at Work.”

The Disney+ series takes place after the events of “Monsters, Inc.,” when the power plant started harvesting the laughter of children to fuel the city of Monstropolis, thanks to Mike and Sulley’s discovery that laughter generates 10 times more energy than screams.

“Monsters at Work” will premiere on Wednesday, July 7.

The series stars Ben Feldman as Tylor Tuskmon, an eager young monster who graduated top of his class at Monsters University and always dreamed of becoming a Scarer until he lands a job at Monsters, Incorporated, and discovers that scaring is out and laughter is in.
