On the morning of January 23, 2024, actor Gary Graham, star of the "Alien Nation" TV series, the cult classic "Robot Jox," and multiple-time "Star Trek" supporting player, passed away at the age of 74. Graham had a prolific acting career, appearing in single episodes of many of the hottest TV shows of his day, including "Starsky & Hutch," "The Incredible Hulk," Knots Landing," "CHiPs," "T.J. Hooker," "Hunter," "M.A.N.T.I.S.," "Diagnosis Murder," "Ally McBeal," "Jag," and "Nip/Tuck." He had an easy demeanor, allowing him to play comedic affable characters just as well as intense, serious ones.
Trekkies likely know Graham best for playing Soval on "Star Trek: Enterprise." Soval was the snippy Vulcan ambassador who oversaw Earth's very, very slow transition from post-war ruin to a thriving society ready for space exploration. In the timeline of "Star Trek," humanity discovers warp-speed flight while the world is recovering from nuclear devastation. On the very first Earth warp flight,...

For many years, death in "Star Trek" was a permanent event. To cite a notable example: when Captain Kirk's brother Sam (William Shatner) was killed in the episode "Operation -- Annihilate!", he was dead forever. There wasn't a storyline later in the series wherein Sam was cloned or resurrected somehow.
In 2023, the tune on death has changed, and multiple characters have now died and returned. Naturally, "Star Trek III: The Seach for Spock" surrounded the resurrection of the title character (Leonard Nimoy). Every Trekkie can tell you the saga of the death of Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) and her subsequent return in the form of her half-Romulan daughter Sela.
Neelix (Ethan Phillips) was killed and brought back via Borg technology in the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Mortal Coil," and Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz) was salvaged from a mushroom dimension. More recently, In "Star Trek: Picard," Data (Brent Spiner), who...

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
The koala is something of a running gag on "Lower Decks," going back to the first season episode "Moist Vessel". In that episode, an officer named Lieutenant O'Connor (Haley Joel Osment) invites Ensign Tendi (Noël Wells) to witness the end of a years-long spiritual journey and see him ascend into a higher being. Sadly, Tendi drops O'Connor's ritual gong during his crucial, final ritual and ruins his mandala to catch it. His ascension is stymied. Tendi will spend the bulk of the episode attempting to get back into O'Connor's good graces, something that annoys him immensely. He wanted to be seen as the only "spirituality guy" on the ship, and now that status is ruined.
Later on in the episode, however, O'Connor does end up ascending in the middle of a crisis and somewhat by accident. In a corridor,...

This post contains spoilers for the season 4 premiere of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
The first episode of the fourth season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Twovix," plunges Trekkies straight into a cauldron of "Star Trek: Voyager" references. It's as if the writers had been saving up all their "Voyager" jokes and, golly, just couldn't stand holding back any longer. Fans of Captain Janeway and her famous, decades-old vessel will have a bloody field day spotting all the references to particular 1990s episodes, and seeing the hallways and bridge of the U.S.S. Voyager realized in animation will certainly provide a thrill. The makers of "Lower Decks" even threw in a few notable notes from Jerry Goldsmith's orchestral theme song, and cast "Voyager" actor Ethan Phillips in a notable supporting role. Those "Voyager" fans are of an intrepid class.
Even the plot of "Twovix" is a spiritual sequel...

There is a scene in the first episode of the fourth season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" -- called "Twovix" -- wherein the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos has to transport the now-decommissioned U.S.S. Voyager to a museum site. The ship, it seems, has been transformed into a museum, complete with bizarre on-board exhibits, including one devoted to the time Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) and Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) surpassed Warp 10 and evolved into salamanders. On the bridge of the Voyager, there are mannequins of the ship's original crew, each wearing their actual duty uniforms.
Ensign Boimler (Jack Quaid), while setting up the diorama, nearly drops a mannequin of Harry Kim (Garrett Wang), the Voyager character who notoriously stayed an ensign for seven straight years without a promotion. On a show where Boimler geeks out about legendary "Star Trek" characters, it's notable that he says nothing of Harry Kim.

Critters is a 1986 American science fiction horror comedy film written and directed by Stephen Herek. It stars Dee Wallace, Scott Grimes, M. Emmet Walsh and Billy Zane.
The plot of the movie follows four small alien creatures, which were accidentally brought to Earth from their home planet by a space probe, as they wreak havoc on a rural Kansas town while being pursued by an intergalactic bounty hunter. The critters must evade capture and find a way back home before their appetite for destruction leaves the town in ruins.

The HBO series "Avenue 5" is one of the funniest shows on television. The story, which comes to us from "Veep" creator Armando Iannucci, is set in the near future on a luxury spaceliner that gets knocked off course. Their weeks-long cruise through space has now turned into an eight-year journey. The ship is owned by a billionaire named Herman Judd (Josh Gad), who is ... well, let's say that Elon Musk might recognize himself in this character. Judd wanted the passengers to see only good-looking people in the crew, so he hired a bunch of actors to fake it while the real crew is shoved below deck in a bit of a hovel.
Hugh Laurie plays Captain Ryan Clark, one of the actors who knows nothing about running the ship. The two seasons we have so far have given us a look at a future with extinct camels, no more fruit,...

If you haven't started watching the HBO series "Avenue 5," 2023 is a great time to start. The absurdist comedy was created by Armando Iannucci ("Veep"), and it's a riot. "Avenue 5" is set 40 years in the future when civilian space travel has become big business. A huge spaceliner owned by billionaire (and Elon Musk analog) Herman Judd (Josh Gad) is flying thousands of people on a short luxury cruise. During the largest yoga class in space, events knock the ship out of orbit, meaning that it won't return to Earth for years. At the moment, that number is eight years, but that could change at any time.

When "Star Trek: Voyager" debuted in 1995, Trekkies found themselves in new, exciting territory. Mixing the premises of "Star Trek" and "Lost in Space," "Voyager" saw a Federation starship, the very small but technologically advanced U.S.S. Voyager suddenly whisked clear across the galaxy to a remote quadrant -- the Delta Quadrant -- that Starfleet hadn't yet explored. Stranded 70 years from Earth, the determined Capt. Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) would have to wrangle an antagonistic crew in their mission to return home, and dramatically, there were going to be no other Starfleet vessels to back them up in a scrape. In the Delta Quadrant, there are no Starbases to replenish their supplies, nor repair damage. They were truly on their own. "Voyager" was to be a test of Starfleet resourcefulness.
Additionally, many members of the Voyager's crew once belonged to the Maquis, a group of anti-Federation terrorists, meaning that Capt. Janeway...

As a California native, it will never cease to tickle me that many of the featured starships on "Star Trek: Lower Decks" are named after inauspicious and rinky-dink towns in my home state. The ships are all California class, and the central ship is called the U.S.S. Cerritos, named for a city about 45 minutes outside of Los Angeles defined by its drab landscapes and abundance of car dealerships. Also on the show has been the U.S.S. Solvang -- a tiny Danish village and notorious tourist destination -- and the U.S.S. Merced -- a city that, uh, produces a lot of milk.
Being the captain of a California-class vessel is a thankless job, a tragedy audiences see reflected in the Cerritos' Captain Carol Freeman, played by Dawnn Lewis. Captain Freeman is often tasked with Second Contact missions, the less interesting and logistics-heavy follow-ups to First Contact missions.

In the near future, cruises might not be exclusively on the ocean. Some of them could be in outer space. Of course, everything becomes way more complicated inspace if something goes wrong, as it does on the eight-week cruise of the luxury ship Avenue 5. The HBO series "Avenue 5" stars Hugh Laurie as the (sort of) captain of the vessel, which is knocked off course in season 1 and faces a three-and-a-half-year journey home. But now it's increased to eight years, and things are only getting worse!
If you haven't seen this show that launched days before the pandemic lockdown in 2020, you simply must catch up. It's not only funny enough that I recommend waterproof mascara, but it's the perfect encapsulation of what life was like in isolation. The HBO comedy series "Avenue 5" is returning for a second season, continuing to deliver a very disturbing yet hilarious vision of the future. The series is set 40 years from now on a commercial space cruise. It was supposed to be up there for eight weeks, but after a technical mishap, the trip is now going to take 3.5 years. But the trip is about to get even longer in the second season.
Commercial space travel isn't the only thing that has changed in this future though. I recently spoke to star Hugh Laurie ("House") and creator Armando Iannucci ("Veep") about the show's vision of what's to come, including Toto Potus, an additional President of the United States that looks like some sort of Alexa device, which is both terrifying and apparently absolutely possible, according to Iannucci and Laurie.

"Star Trek: Lower Decks" is an endlessly enteraining show because it delights in showing off the many, many parts of "Star Trek" lore that past franchise installments never had time to explore. Sometimes, that means revisiting a kooky planet, but other times, the show digs deep into the unexplored intricacies of Starfleet life. This week's episode, "Room For Growth," sees the Cerritos crew exploring some of the lesser-known parts of their own ship, poking fun at the seemingly endless configuration of specialized rooms that have appeared in "Star Trek" ship layouts of the past.
The adventure begins when Boimler (Jack Quaid), Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Tendi (Noel Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) discover that the Cerrito is having a room lottery, one that could land them some sweet, non-hallway digs where they don't have to worry about bedtime being interrupted by dramatic upper deck crew plotlines. Created by two-time Emmy(R) winner Armando Iannucci (HBO’s “Veep),” the eight-episode second season of Avenue 5 debuts Monday, October 10 (10:00-10:30 p.m. Et/Pt) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. The comedy series is set 40 years in the future when traveling the solar system is no longer the stuff of sci-fi fantasy, but a booming, multibillion-dollar business. Avenue 5 takes us to a not-so-distant future where space tourism is a booming business. While manning a luxury spacecraft owned by Herman Judd (Josh Gad), Captain Ryan Clark (Hugh Laurie) finds himself in over his head when the ship is thrown disastrously off-course – turning what was meant to be an eight-week cruise into an eight-year journey. Picking up five months after failing to reroute the vessel, season two follows the crew – including fiery engineer Billie (Lenora Crichlow), unpredictable head of customer relations Matt...

HBO has released a new trailer for the second season of its original series, "Avenue 5." The show was created by two-time Emmy Award-winner Armando Iannucci and stars Hugh Laurie ("House") and Josh Gad ("Beauty and the Beast"). If you haven't watched it yet, it's the story set about 40 years in the future aboard an interstellar spaceship. It's owned by clueless billionaire Herman Judd (Gad in a ponytail and some pretty wild outfits), who hired mainly attractive actors and models for his crew, so everyone would look good on the bridge and please the passengers. The ship itself is actually run by a second crew who weren't deemed pretty enough to be seen.
The titular space cruiser, Avenue 5, was supposed to be out on an eight-week cruise, but the death of an engineer and the temporary loss of artificial gravity changed their course. Instead of eight weeks, the ship would...

Directed by Stephen Herek, who also wrote the screenplay with Domonic Muir, Critters has the following synopsis:
When strange fuzzy creatures from outer space arrive on a farm, the Brown family — Jay, Helen, their daughter April, and their son Brad — must fend off the malevolent little aliens. Two bounty hunters with superhuman abilities follow the aggressive beasts from beyond, but the warriors aren’t terribly effective, leaving the Brown family to battle the fur balls and rescue April from their clutches all by themselves.

The only thing Trekkies like doing more than nitpicking continuity errors -- and re-writing scenes in our heads because "Tuvok was a little out of character in that one scene" -- is hunting for inter-Trek references. Given the expansive, 56-year lifespan of "Star Trek," not to mention and its current, rapidly increasing volume, there will always be a new piece of mythology to lock into the giant puzzle. Every new story is, in the mind of a Trekkie, going to be information that can be used later. Data gathering is a sport. Typically, the game is played in good fun, but if winning is not important then, Commander, why keep score?
"Star Trek: Lower Decks," generally speaking, is a glorious opportunity for the nerdier Trekkies to earn a few Brownie points among their fellow fans. The series is so lousy with references, one must watch each episode multiple times with...

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" recently wrapped its first — and to briefly editorialize, very good — season, while "Star Trek: Lower Decks" will premiere its third on August 25. The two shows have quickly emerged from the busy "Star Trek" marketplace as "the two good ones," with Trekkies giving both effusive praise. Perhaps in response, Paramount announced on July 23, out of San Diego Comic-Con 2022, that "Strange New Worlds" and "Lower Decks" will have an unlikely crossover episode.
Crossovers are, of course, nothing new to "Star Trek." Because "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," and "Star Trek: Voyager" all took place on the same timeline, the three shows would frequently visit one another (Dr. Bashir visited the Enterprise; Worf got a job on DS9; Lt. Barclay communicated with the Voyager; these names all make sense to Trekkies). What is unusual about the "Snw"/"Ld" crossover is the former show...

Exclusive: Avenue 5‘s space voyage may be coming to an end. Season 2 of Armando Iannucci’s space comedy, delayed by the pandemic, has not been scheduled yet. I hear it will likely launch in the fall and is expected to be the series’ last. A rep for HBO declined comment.
This is not surprising. Season 1 of Avenue 5, Iannucci’s followup series to the Emmy-winning Veep, premiered in January 2020 and was renewed for a second season in February of that year, just a couple of weeks before the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Filming on the new season, delayed by Covid, finally got underway in August 2021 and wrapped in November.
Given the time that has passed, the options on the cast, led by Hugh Laurie, came up, and the actors were released, sources tell Deadline. Some of them have moved on, signing as series regulars on new shows.

Neelix the Talaxian from "Star Trek: Voyager" is beloved by some, and disliked by others, though how you can dislike such a cheerful character is beyond comprehension. Aside from that, just knowing what went into the makeup job on Ethan Phillips should be enough to make you love him all the more. It featured the first female commanding officer in a "Star Trek" series, Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), who steered the crew as they tried to find their way home from the Delta Quadrant where they...

Ethan Phillips is one of the most recognizable actors in Hollywood, except he literally is not always recognizable because he spent most of his life in costume. He is the man who spent many years playing the character Neelix on the hit show “Star Trek: Voyager,” and that meant no one really knew what his real face looked like. He was all prosthetics and makeup, so he is likely one of the most famous television actors to actually walk the streets without being recognized thanks to all of that.
