Actress Mackenzie Phillips opened up about how she managed to forgive her late father, John Phillips, the lead singer of the folk-rock vocal group, The Mamas and the Papas.
Her comments were delivered 14 years after she revealed in her 2009 memoir, High on Arrival, that she had an incestuous relationship with her father that lasted for ten years.
The One Day at a Time star focused on the idea of forgiveness during a conversation that she had with her half-sister, Chynna Phillips Baldwin.
During this video, Mackenzie responded to the criticisms.
“Dad was something else,” she said. “I get a lot of criticism and a lot of trolling online for having forgiveness in my heart. Forgiveness, because forgiving is for me, not for the other person. And forgiving doesn’t mean I cosign or agree with what I’m forgiving him for.”

The death of Norman Lear at the age of 101 ended the reign of one of the most prolific television producers in the industry’s history. Lear was known for pushing viewers’ buttons in some of his most unforgettable television series, including All in the Family, Maude, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, and Good Times. Lear never shied away from tackling the tough topics. Here are 5 of Norman Lear’s most controversial TV episodes.
‘All in the Family’: Edith’s 50th Birthday
The two-part All in the Family episode titled “Edith’s 50th Birthday” was a dark look into Edith Bunker’s (Jean Stapelton) attempted rape. It was the first time a television sitcom dealt directly with the subject.
The season 8 episode centered on Edith’s milestone birthday. As her family was next door planning her birthday party, an attacker posing as a police detective entered her home.

Danny Masterson’s wife Bijou Phillips has filed for divorce. The split comes less than two weeks after the That ‘70s Show star, 47, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for raping two women at his home in Los Angeles between 2001 and 2003.
Phillips named “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split, according to the filing, which took place on Sept. 18 in Santa Barbara Superior Court.

Two personal, stylish, and distinctive films celebrate major birthdays this month: “Risky Business” turned 40 August 5 and August 1 marked the 50th anniversary of the release of “American Graffiti.”
Two other personal, stylish, and distinctive films also celebrate their blockbuster success this August: “Barbie,” which is now $1 billion worldwide and counting, and “Oppenheimer,” which just crossed $600 million.
August is generally known for providing the dog days of summer box office. It’s the end of the road, kids are going back to school. There’s no time for a blockbuster to stretch its legs and no one’s in the mood for anything weighty. The current studio release calendar bears out that logic with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” “Gran Turismo,” “Blue Beetle,” and “Strays.”

"Why aren't you more famous?" It's one question independent singer-songwriter and actor Alexz Johnson gets too often. "[That question is] very sweet, and it's obviously coming from a really beautiful place, but what's behind that is, 'You should be more of a success,'" the 36-year-old mother of two tells Popsugar. From 2010 until now, Johnson has released five studio albums independently. Her latest, "Seasons," came out on April 7.
For an artist with a résumé as impressive as Johnson's, it's somewhat natural to wonder why her powerhouse voice isn't dominating the airwaves. But Johnson is right where she wants to be as an artist, and she's aiming to redefine what success looks like with her new album.
"When I started the process of doing 'Seasons,' I was pregnant with my son and it was Covid still . . . I was like, 'You know what? I'm going to do a record from home.

Teen dramas aren't just for teens anymore. In 2022, "Euphoria" became HBO's second most-watched series ever, and season 3 of Mindy Kaling's comedy-drama "Never Have I Ever" continued to attract a massive audience of viewers of all ages. The genre simply continues to expand, to the delight of its many fans.
Perhaps teen dramas persist because becoming an adult is a universally complex stage of life. In her book "Teen TV," Dr. Stefania Marghitu writes, "Certain narrative elements present themselves in nearly every teen series: the protagonist feels alienated from the adolescent world she is on the threshold of entering. This conflict is intertwined with a passionate story of first love and new discoveries during the transition from child to adult." Even for viewers who are no longer teens, the thrills, pains, and misunderstandings of youth aren't too difficult to remember.

A judge declared a mistrial Wednesday at the rape trial of “That ’70s Show” actor Danny Masterson after jurors, who were leaning strongly toward acquitting him, deadlocked following the monthlong trial in which the Church of Scientology played a supporting role.
Prosecutors said Masterson raped three women, including a former girlfriend, in his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003 and the church dissuaded them from going public for years. Masterson, 46, pleaded not guilty and his lawyer said the acts were all consensual.
“I find the jurors hopelessly deadlocked,” Judge Charlaine Olmedo declared after the jury foreman said there was nothing the court could do to move them closer to reaching a unanimous decision. She set a March date for a retrial in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Olmedo had ordered jurors to take Thanksgiving week off and keep deliberating after they said on Nov. 18 that they could not reach a consensus. A...

ABC is celebrating Norman Lear’s 100th birthday with a television special on Sept. 22.
Variety was on hand for exclusive interviews with Lear and his starry guests as they made their way into the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel earlier this month for the filming of the show, “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music and Laughter.”
Lear, who turned 100 on July 27, has famously credited laughing as the key to living a long life. He also told me that staying in the present is equally as important. “We don’t pay enough attention to the words ‘over’ and ‘next,'” he said. “When something is over, it’s over and we’re all onto the next. If there was a hammock in the middle, that would be the best description I could offer for living in the moment.”
Below, Lear’s friends and the stars of his most famous sitcoms recall meeting the icon for the first time.

Gilbert Gottfried, the comedian, “Aladdin” star and owner of the most recognizable voice in Hollywood, has died after battling a long illness, his family announced Tuesday. He was 67.
His publicist told the Washington Post that he died of myotonic dystrophy type 2, a form of muscular dystrophy.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness. In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor,” his family wrote on Twitter.
Many people in Hollywood, including comedians Jason Alexander, Dane Cook and more, paid tribute to Gottfried after the shocking news of his death. “Gilbert Gottfried was never not funny,” wrote Cook. “He was a lovely guy, always friendly and made many people happy.

Sally Kellerman, who was Oscar nominated for her supporting role as Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s “Mash” feature film, died Thursday in Woodland Hills, Calif. She was 84.
Her publicist Alan Eichler confirmed her death, and her daughter Claire added that she had been suffering from dementia for the past five years.
Among her other roles were a cameo in Altman’s “The Player,” a professor in Rodney Dangerfield’s “Back to School” and a Starfleet officer in the “Star Trek” episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”
The willowy blonde actress with the characteristically throaty voice appeared in two Altman films in 1970; the other was the more experimental “Brewster McCloud,” in which she starred with Bud Cort and Michael Murphy. In this film, which did not have a conventional narrative, Kellerman played Louise, the mother of Cort’s bewinged character, Brewster.

Since landing on the pop-culture radar at age 13 with “American Graffiti,” Mackenzie Phillips has become as known for her struggles with drug abuse as for her work on screen. Following her star-turning role as a rebellious teen on sitcom “One Day at a Time,” from which she was fired twice as a result of her addiction, Phillips continued to battle her demons in the public eye, later chronicled in two tell-all books. Now she’s helping others on the journey toward recovery as a counselor at Breathe Life Healing Centers in West Hollywood — all while keeping one foot in the entertainment industry with roles on “Orange Is the New Black” and the rebooted “One Day at a Time,” among other shows. Here, the actor and author discusses her resilience and finding balance in life.

Valerie Bertinelli first became a household name in 1975 when she played Barbara Cooper on the CBS sitcom “One Day at a Time” for nine seasons. While Mackenzie Phillips as older sis Julie was the rebellious daughter in a household headed by Bonnie Franklin‘s divorced mom, Bertinelli’s upbeat character was more adept at making wisecracks. She would earn two Golden Globes as Best TV Supporting Actress but never competed for an Emmy. Even when she starred in a string of popular TV movies in the ’80s and ’90s with such ripe titles as “I Was a Mail Order Bride,” “The Seduction of Gina” and “Shattered Vows,” she was overlooked by TV’s top acting honor.
Bertinelli, 59, would spend three years starting in 2001 as a heavenly being named Gloria on “Touched by an Angel” and more recently appeared on TV Land’s “Hot in Cleveland” for five seasons until 2015 alongside of Betty White,...

Because we invite them into our homes, TV series regulars have a way of feeling like friends or even family. That is certainly true of the gang from “One Day at a Time,” the Norman Lear-created comedy series that aired on CBS from 1975 to 1984. Bonnie Franklin, who played a divorced mom and career woman who was raising her two daughters solo, and Mackenzie Phillips, who was the defiant older teen Julie, were highly relatable. But it was Valerie Bertinelli, as quick-with-a-quip little sis Barbara, who became America’s sitcom sweetheart.
She would win two Golden Globes for as Best TV Supporting Actress for her role as Barbara Cooper. But even though the actress would go on to headline a series of popular made-for-tv movies in the ’80s and ’90s with such attention-grabbing titles as “The Princess and the Cabbie” and “The Seduction of Gina” before becoming a heavenly creature...

John Stamos credits his “Fuller House” co-star Jodie Sweetin with helping him get sober.
The actor was on hand on Thursday night at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles to present Sweetin with Writers in Treatment’s Experience, Strength and Hope Award for her memoir “Unsweetined” and her work and advocacy for the recovery community.
Stamos choked back tears while recalling getting sober almost four years ago after hitting “rock bottom.” He turned to Sweetin, who is coming up on eight years of sobriety, for help.
“It took me a long time, a long time disappointing everyone who cared about me, culminating in a terrible DUI where I could have killed somebody,” Stamos said. “I hit rock bottom. Jodie lovingly allowed me to walk my own path and when I finally humbled myself to ask for your help, I realized that the perky little blabbermouth had become the master...

Litchfield Og Barb Denning should look very familiar - no matter what generation you're a part of. Mackenzie Phillips, who plays Orange Is the New Black's latest jailbird to rock the cage in Max, has been on the scene since her debut role as Carol in 1973's American Graffiti. She was only 12 when she landed the part and hasn't stopped acting since.
Phillips has an extensive résumé. After her breakout film role, she appeared in guest capacities on shows like The Love Boat and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Her most iconic role, however, came when she landed the part of Julie Cooper on One Day at a Time in 1975, a part she held until 1983. She later went on to appear as a different character in the Netflix reboot of One Day at a Time, which premiered in 2017.

Before they are in orange, blue, khaki, or even pink uniforms, the inmates of Litchfield are just regular people committing regular crimes. While the writers and producers of Orange Is the New Black show us some pretty dark offenses - like Lorna's attempt to murder Christopher's girlfriend and the young boy who falls to his death while trying to leave Suzanne's apartment - season six introduces two new characters and one of the most gruesome crimes we've seen yet. Meet Barb and Carol Denning: they are the OGs of Litchfield, as we learn they've been in max for quite some time, and they're also the reason for the intensely divided C-Block and D-Block.

Warning: spoilers for season six of Orange Is the New Black ahead!
Boiling Orange Is the New Black season six down to one core theme is impossible; as always, the talented ensemble cast makes it impossible to choose between all of their engrossing, messy, and brilliant stories. But one of the juiciest threads running through the whole of the season is the fraught, vengeful relationship between Frieda (Dale Soules), Barb (Mackenzie Phillips), and Carol (Henny Russell).
After being moved to Litchfield's maximum-security facility in the premiere following the season five riot, strong, survivalist Frieda appears to give up - she slits her wrists in her cell and just narrowly avoids death. We soon discover that the reason Frieda attempts to take her own life isn't because of where she is now, but who is in there with her.
The new prison is ruled over by two feuding sisters, Barb and Carol.

Not sure where you've seen Orange Is the New Black's newest cast member? It's probably not her acting chops in a prison jumpsuit that caught your memory but likely her voice. Vicci Martinez, who plays the role of Daddy this season, is actually an established singer-songwriter with 10 albums, two EPs, and four chart-hitting singles under her belt. As a singer, songwriter, and now actress, she's quite the triple threat.
Martinez has appeared on all the singing shows: American Idol, Star Search, and even The Voice. She worked with mentor CeeLo Green on the latter back in 2011, placing third and landing a deal with Universal Republic.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the sixth season of “Orange is the New Black,” streaming on Netflix.
While season six of “Orange Is the New Black” tackles an assortment of timely issues — immigration detention centers, opioid addiction, the Black Lives Matter movement — at its heart is a tale of two sisters, Barbara and Carol Denning.
Imagine “Frozen’s” Anna and Elsa as homicidal Og jailbirds whose kingdoms are rival cellblocks inside the maximum-security prison where the ladies of Litchfield get locked up after last season’s prison riot. Sentenced to life following the murder of their kid sister (compounded with drug-dealing charges), the siblings-turned-archenemies spend the better part of thirteen episodes trying to off each another.

When Orange is the New Black Season 6 premieres on Friday, July 27, the easy life of minimum security will be over.
Opening about a week after the riot that was the focus of Orange is the New Black Season 5, only about half of the central characters make it to the maximum security arm of Litchfield Penitentiary.
The rest are in the wind, perhaps to be shuffled in somewhere down the line or never to return.
The sixth season will continue following the lives of those involved with Litchfield, but this is the first time the I've wondered how the stories get decided.
Not everyone makes it to Max, and there are a few characters whose absence is noticed.

It was hard to know how “Orange is the New Black” would — or could — come back after its fifth season, which was as ambitious as it was ultimately disastrous. The show became as scattered and chaotic as the inmate protest-turned-riot it was trying to depict, sending every character spinning seemingly for the sake of it. By season’s end, two guards had died and the inmates were rounded up and shipped off to different prisons.
It’s understandable why, after four similarly structured seasons, the show was tempted to slow the story down to follow just a few extraordinary days in the characters’ lives. But in the end, the result was too thrilled with its own daring to make much sense. So the question was how Season 6 could recover without ditching its ongoing storylines and starting over with a whole new cast.
