The 2023 Grammy Awards honored the lives and careers lost in the music industry this past year in a touching In Memoriam segment, with performances by Kacey Musgraves, Sheryl Crow, Mick Fleetwood, Bonnie Raitt and Quavo.
Host Trevor Noah introduced the tribute, acknowledging the importance of how music can unite people through their differences, while also acknowledging the influence of Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons in hip-hop over the years. “It’s Black kids and white kids rejecting segregation in the 1950s, and instead, blending R&b, country and even gospel into rock and roll,” Noah said. “In the 1980s, a young Black rapper from Queens and a Jewish white kid in his NYU dorm came together to make some of the greatest hip-hop of all time. They made a powerful new sound together because they were different.”
He continued, “Music isn’t just the harmony of sound. It’s the...

Bill Bailey has said that Jeremy Clarkson “got the kicking he deserved” over his column about Meghan Markle in The Sun.
The piece has become the Independent Press Standards Organisation’s (Ipso) most complained-about article, and has attracted criticism from high-profile figures, politicians, and his own daughter, Emily Clarkson.
In the column, Clarkson wrote that he dreamt of the day that the duchess would be made to parade naked through Britain while a crowd chanted “shame” and threw “excrement” at her.
The former Top Gear presenter, 62, claimed that “everyone who’s my age thinks the same way”.
Bailey, 57, is the latest celebrity to weigh in on the controversy.
In an interview with The Telegraph, which took place days after Clarkson issued an apology for the piece, the comedian said: “That was classic Twitter.”
He continued: “You might [make a comment like Clarkson’s] in the pub as a clumsy, oafish sort of laugh. But you put...

“It is with great sadness that I have to announce to the fans of The Pointer Sisters that my sister, Bonnie died this morning, her sister and fellow singer Anita Pointer said in a statement to the PA news agency. “Our family is devastated, on behalf of my siblings and I and the entire Pointer family, we ask for your prayers at this time.”

In early 1975, country singer Earl Thomas Conley and R&B performer Anita Pointer were just beginning to pick up steam in their respective careers. While Conley, who died yesterday at age 77, was denting the lower reaches of the country singles chart with his first releases, Pointer and her sisters Bonnie, Helen and June were taking home their first-ever Grammy award — in the Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group category — for “Fairytale,” a stone-country breakup tune Anita had penned about her ill-fated affair with a San Francisco DJ.

In ratings news, The New Normal hit another season low. BBC America has announced that Doctor Who will return on Supernatural Saturday, March 30th.In case you didn't know ... we're too powerful to need judicial protection. Sony Pictures Classics have unleashed an all singing, all dancing trailer for I’m So Excited.
Written and directed by Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar (his 19th feature), I’m So Excited is an ensemble comedy about an impending plane crash that leads various passengers to confess their darkest secrets.
The film, which is said to be more in line with Almodóvar’s earlier work, stars Carlos Areces, Raul Arevalo , Javier Cámara, Lola Dueñas, Carmen Machi, Laya Martí, Cecilia Roth, Hugo Silva, Miguel Ángel Silvestre and Blanca Suárez.
Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Paz Vega, all regular collaborators, are said to make cameo appearances, though none are visible in the teaser, which instead centers on three flight attendants singing and dancing along to The Pointer Sisters’ infamous pop song I’m So Excited.

Back in June, Sony Pictures Classics acquired the rights to "I'm So Excited," the latest film by Pedro Almodovar (The Skin I Live In, Volver), which stars Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Paz Vega. Check out the trailer below. The Spanish-language comedy has yet to release a plot summary, and the trailer is no help. It features three male flight attendants talking about how much they hate their jobs and then they dance to "I'm So Excited" son by The Pointer Sisters. Cruz, Banderas and Vega don't show up at all. The film will appear in Spain in March and will then get a limited release in the Us in November (in New York) and December (in Los Angeles) of 2013. Trailer:...

Almodovar chose the intimate and moving retrospective by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to show the trailer for his much-anticipated film, a comedy that unfolds on board a plane and whose cast includes Javier Camara, Cecilia Roth, Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz.
The film is due to premiere in Spain in March.

Hey, there, sweet reader. Today hasn’t been the sunshiniest of Fridays, so let’s take a break and watch something sure to elevate your mood. Pedro Almodovar‘s latest film, I’m So Excited (which was once referred to as The Standby Lovers, and has now clearly been renamed in honor of The Pointer Sisters’ song), has just sent out its first teaser trailer, and it is a delight. Drugs! Dancing! Lip-syncing! All on a jet hurdling through the sky! Get your tickets now. (Get it?) Back in June, we learned a bit about the film when Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz joined the cast, including its apparent plot: “a comedy…that’s about a plane full of people who reveal their most guarded secrets to one another when the aircraft starts to go down.” And that’s just about all we know at this point, though it’s certainly not essential for enjoying said first...

Ja from Mnpp here - I don't want to speak for Nathaniel, but I can't imagine him having to do one of his patented "Yes No Maybe So" takes on this here first teaser for Pedro Almodovar's next flick, a comedy called I'm So Excited - as in The Pointer Sisters' big hit song, which we see some male flight attendants perform therein. I can't imagine Nat having to to a "Yes No Maybe So" since this is Almodovar, and it is always Hell Yes with Almodovar.
So I will just present it unto you, in hopes it can maybe put a smile on your face on this dreary horrible day. And I will add this informational nugget - I stole pizza from a pizza party that The Pointer Sisters were having during a drag show I attended when I was in college in the late 90s, and...

Following his first outright foray into thriller-horror territory with last year's "The Skin I Live In," Pedro Almodovar is letting loose with his upcoming comedy "I'm So Excited." The first teaser for the Sony Pictures Classics release hit the web today and without giving an iota of plot away, it still manages to convey the fun, campy and irreverant tone Almodovar seems to be going for in his latest. Recalling the colorful, frothy nature of his earlier comedies, the promo features three flamboyant flight attendants performing, you guessed it, The Pointer Sisters' song of the title. The film centers on the plane's passengers and crew who face a life-threatening situation. How this musical interlude fits in, we're not so sure. The film's set to open in the UK on May 3. No Us release date has been announced of yet. Watch the teaser below:...

Pedro Almodovar's last few films include the twisty, underrated genre exercise "The Skin I Live," the meta ode to cinema "Broken Embraces," the lush "Volver" and the tough "Bad Education." No wonder he just wants to have a laugh. Next year, the Spanish auteur will drop "I'm So Excited," and if you had any doubt that it would involve The Pointer Sisters on some level, you can put your mind at ease. The first teaser is here, and it's essentially a full-on routine to the titular song, with some funny face expressions throw into the mix. Said to be a comedy in the vein of Almodóvar's early films, plot details are under wraps, but it's an ensemble comedy set against a plane accident with various characters fearing for their lives and confessing their inner secrets. And dancing, apparently. Cinematographer Jose Luis Alcaine ("Volver," "The Skin I Live In") will once again lens the.

New Orleans — Actress Tempestt Bledsoe says she's thrilled to be returning to network television on a show that portrays "a positive black family" similar to the long-running hit sitcom she was part of for roughly eight years – "The Cosby Show."
"That show was my childhood," said Bledsoe, who played middle child Vanessa Huxtable in the NBC show that also starred Bill Cosby, Phylicia Rashad, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Lisa Bonet and Keshia Knight Pulliam. "It did so many things. It greatly influenced the kinds of projects I did. It helped form my core values, like my work ethic."
Bledsoe and actor Anthony Anderson spoke Friday at the Essence Music Festival about the new show they're starring in, "Guys with Kids," which premieres this fall on NBC.
In an interview after their appearance, the co-stars told The Associated Press they were thrilled the show will spotlight a "positive black family on network television.

American Idol got off to a dry start last night and didn’t quite pick up the pace, with safe number after safe number, even with Gwen Stefani and No Doubt bassist, Tony Kanal joining Jimmy Iovine to mentor the remaining contestants for eighties week. The duets were more entertaining and engaging than the performances that actually counted for something, making voting decisions awfully difficult this week. One contestant did have her shining moment this week… and it wasn’t Jessica Sanchez. After warming up a seat in the bottom three, she definitely won’t be there this week. Aside from this killer performance, it’s anybody’s guess who will be going home this week.
The only remaining wild card in the competition, DeAndre Brackensick performed “I Like It” by Debarge and gave a good performance but by no means was it one of his best performances as host,...

After last week's brief, shining moment of contemporary musical relevance, "American Idol" returned to its supply of outdated themes, saddling the Top 8 with songs from the '80s (a.k.a. the decade before half of these contestants were born). Still, the overused song selection didn't preclude the potential Idols from pulling out two particular powerhouse performances, both in their solos, and in the four duets that the producers used to pad the hour.
The show featured mentoring by Gwen Stefani (who hasn't released a new single since, what, 2008?) and her No Doubt (which hasn't released a new -- not previously unreleased/compilation -- album since 2001) bandmate Tony Kanal, who is apparently a man of few words. Who'd have thunk that Stevie Nicks would be one of the most current mentors "Idol" could dig up to coach their kids? In that regard, I think "The Voice" definitely has "Idol" on the ropes.

It's 80's night on American Idol. I'm expecting great things from a few of these contestants tonight. (Ahem, Elise, after your performance last week, I'm looking at you!) Here's hoping they don't let me down.
Ryan reminds us that the 80s brought us stonewashed jeans and neon tube socks. And then treats us to a picture of Randy Jackson from the 80s. I'll gladly welcome the music of the 80s back into my life, but if the fashions never return, I'm completely okay with that.
Now that we're down to four guys and four girls, in addition to singing their solo performance numbers, we'll also get guy-girl duets. To mark the occasion, Jimmy Iovine has called in No Doubt members Gwen Stefani and bassist Tony Kanal.
DeAndre Brackensick opens the night singing "I Like It" by Debarge. Gwen says what he needs is confidence. I think what he needs is...

The Top 8 finalists on "American Idol" are getting their '80s on, and now we know what songs the group of kids -- all but one of them weren't even alive in the '80s -- are singing. There's some "Time After Time," some "Islands In the Stream," some "Flashdance" -- but nary an "Against All Odds" in sight (though Phil Collins is repped with some Genesis to start off the show).

Put on your acid wash jeans and your spandex because this week, the American Idol Top 8 take on hits from the 1980s. It should be a great week for people like me, who love the '80s. So many great choices! I'll be so disappointed if no one sings a song by Hall and Oates. But there are only 8 solo performances, so I should probably prepare myself for disappointment. I hope they won't try to throw duets or trios at us again--save that mess for the results show!
But, according to recent spoilers, they are singing duets and I'll have to settle for The Pointer Sisters instead of Hall and Oates. And no one is singing any Tears for Fears? I'm flabbergasted. A wasted opportunity, Top 8! At least someone is singing "Flashdance ... What a Feeling."...

There's nothing quite like a duets Christmas album to bring a little holiday cheer into your home. And who better to release one than Michael Bublé? After all, the celebrated singer already has the number one Christmas album in America.
Unfortunately, it looks like the dream team of singers Bublé assembled for his follow-up isn't quite working out. Some, like Sting, just aren't getting the mood, others like Russell Brand don't seem to know what a "song" is, and M.I.A. is just dangerous.
We guess he should have gone with safer bets like Sarah McLachlan and The Pointer Sisters.

Los Angeles — Authorities say singer Patricia "Bonnie" Pointer of the Pointer Sisters has been arrested for investigation of possessing rock cocaine.
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore says the 61-year-old singer was arrested Friday in South Los Angeles after the car she was riding in was pulled over for a mechanical malfunction.
Deputies say she was released after posting $10,000 bail.
In a statement issued through her manager Robert Watson, Pointer thanked the public for their support and prayers.
Watson declined comment on the arrest.
The Pointer Sisters grew up singing in church. Patricia and June formed a duo and were singing in clubs when Anita and Ruth joined them.
The sisters released their first album in 1973 and won a Grammy in 1974. Bonnie left in 1977 for a solo career.
She is due in court on Jan. 17.
