In May 2021, after 19 years in Los Angeles, comedians and married couple Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitzky (aka Christina P), moved to Austin with their two young sons. Segura says he felt like L.A., in mid-pandemic, was falling apart. “I was like, ‘This city is turning into a shit show!'” he tells Variety.
About one month after they moved, Pazsitzky suffered an injurious fall in their new home. And, as you might expect, Segura ended up turning the (non-life-threatening) accident into a bit, which is featured in “Tom Segura: Sledgehammer,” his upcoming stand-up special premiering July 4 globally on Netflix.
In “Sledgehammer,” Segura recounts his uneasy 911 call that night requesting help. “I realized that, while what I’m about to say it true, it sounds… suspicious! But I gotta say it. So I’m like, ‘My wife fell down the stairs.'” Pazsitzky, who had misjudged a step when she...

Stage shows and mistakes aren’t meant to go together. Especially when those shows live on in the library of a streaming service, the usual goal is to offer something polished and let a little spontaneity shine through. But, as the new “Middleditch & Schwartz” trio of recorded specials shows, improv doesn’t really work that way. Still, with Thomas Middleditch and Ben Schwartz as a two-man guide through some absurd waters, those rough edges don’t have to be a bad thing.
Filmed at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, these three 50-minute performances come from an audience suggestion. A few moments of back-and-forth Q&a with a single member of the crowd — in these cases, conversations about an upcoming wedding, law school, and a job interview — give Middleditch and Schwartz the tiny story milestones they’re free to disperse however they choose.

Doug Benson's rambling pot-fueled documentaries are all basically just an excuse for the comic to get very high in different locations, but in the process of putting the latest one together, he and director Ryan Polito have put together something that captures Comic-Con in a very accurate and not romanticized way. This was a pretty solid year for me and Comic-Con, and so was last year. I enjoyed myself both times, so I guess technically I can't say I hate Comic-Con anymore, although that's been my mantra for a while. I think the accurate way of saying it is that I often hate elements of the experience of Comic-Con. There is a certain amount of hassle that goes with attendance that can just wear on you when you're trying to work, things that might never bother someone who is just attending for pleasure. It's easy to forget when you're...

Last year, Louis Ck used the Internet to self-distribute an hour of his stand-up online and make over $1 million in less than two weeks. Many saw his success as revolutionary for the film industry. But we now live in a post-Louis age, where it seems like every week a new independent artist announces plans to go direct to the fans with their work, to the point where new projects struggle to break out. One of the latest creators to explore film distribution online is comedian Doug Benson, who first hit national attention in 2007 with the Morgan Spurlock parody/experiment in stoner-ism "Super High Me." Read More: The Ti West Open Letter: What Does An Indie Success Story Looks Like? The documentary is only one part of Benson's media empire, which includes the Doug Loves Movies podcast, over 520,000 followers on Twitter -- and, beginning next week, Benson's first foray into the direct-to-fan distribution model.

This one follows Benson on tour with comedy partner Graham Elwood as they traverse through the American midwest. It’s not about smoking marijuana for 30 consecutive days, although that probably happens within the film. This movie is simply a road movie. Two comedians and the open road. Which is where it begins to rely heavily on how much you are entertained by these two men. From a technical standpoint, it’s a capably made documentary. Director Ryan Polito, whose major credits include a number of Taylor Swift concert films, has knack for keeping things naturalistic and cutting out a lot of the...

Wow! I literally just jumped up for joy hearing this final wave. I think that this might be my favorite selection of films since I have been attending. Films like American Mary, Antiviral, Berberian Sound Studio, the remake of Who Can Kill A Child? – Come Out and Play and the World Premiere of the sequel to The Collector! These films plus a few others just caps off what I’m sure will be my favorite Fantastic Fest yet!
Also, for those keeping score, Michael picked 7 movies that are definitely showing while I picked 6. However, this could change once the secret screenings show. Again, Fantastic Fest starts next Thursday and we plan to have reviews, interviews and possibly video & audio blogs. Anyway, here’s the announcement:
