New York -- Chalk up two more swift deaths on Broadway in a new season already littered with roadkill. Less than a month after opening to withering reviews and dismal grosses, Scandalous, the bio-musical about the rollercoaster life of the 1920s Los Angeles evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, will close on Sunday Dec. 9. With a score by David Pomeranz and David Friedman, the show is a passion project of Kathie Lee Gifford, who wrote the book and lyrics. Scandalous Neil Simon Theatre, NYC
Well, you can't blame the cast, and shaking one's fists at God seems pointless, but regardless of who's at fault, Scandalous, the new musical playing at the Neil Simon, is painful enough to make even the most fervent believers question their faith in musical theater. Armed with a heavily plotted story and the general mirth of a crucifixion, this musical is sadly beyond salvation.
It all begins with a poorly selected and misleading title that makes us feel we're about to see something tawdry, or at least mildly titillating; instead we are pushed through the life story of Aimee Semple McPherson, a woman we hardly care about and who would be much better served by a more objective Ken Burns documentary.
Carolee Carmello deserves some kind of award for endurance, as she spends less than seven minutes off the stage for this song-heavy production and,...

New York -- At the end of a long day, Kathie Lee Gifford offers a visitor a cup of coffee. Not wine, coffee.
"Would you like a skinny latte that I'm not going to drink?" she asks, sweetly. "I just realized it has caffeine. I get up so early that I will never get to sleep tonight if I drink it."
Gifford, forever the kind host, has every reason to need her rest these days: In addition to her gig on the often boozy fourth hour of the "Today" show, she's also putting the finishing touches on the lyrics and book of a new Broadway musical.
It's about the controversial 1920s-era Pentecostal evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson – a woman near and dear to Gifford's heart, even if most people haven't heard of her.
